Hopelessness In The Institutionalized Elderly, Joanne Hansen Jan 1986

Hopelessness In The Institutionalized Elderly, Joanne Hansen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The losses and stresses of the elderly make them susceptible to powerlessness which ultimately may lead to hopelessness and death. The use of client initiated interventions designed to increase the individual's control of the environment may interrupt the powerlessness, hopelessness and death cycle. The research question for this study addressed the influence of client-initiated interventions on the hopelessness score among the institutionalized elderly.
The specific research questions were:
I. To what extent do the use of client-initiated interventions affect the level of hopelessness in the institutionalized client on a short- and long-term basis?
2. Which of the client-initiated interventions have …

The Application Of A Falls Risk Index, Marcelline R. Harris Jan 1986

The Application Of A Falls Risk Index, Marcelline R. Harris

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the prospective use of a falls risk index. The research question was: To what extent do the intrinsic factors identified in the Tinetti et al. falls risk index predict which patients are likely to experience a fall. Hogue's ecological model of falls in late life provided a conceptual framework for the study.
Direct observation was used to collect baseline data from a convenience/purposive sample of 26 male patients in a midwest nursing home care unit with a rehabilitation focus. Patients were then assigned to one of three risk groups: yes-fall, 30% chance of fall, no-fall. Reports of …

Mandatory Reporting Of Elder Abuse: A Cheap But Ineffective Solution To The Problem, Dyana Lee Jan 1986

Mandatory Reporting Of Elder Abuse: A Cheap But Ineffective Solution To The Problem, Dyana Lee

Fordham Urban Law Journal

During the past decade physicians, social workers, and the media have sought to inform the American public that many elder adults are being maltreated by in-home caretakers. As a result of articles and reports identifying potentially large numbers of cases, society is slowly accepting the fact that this form of family violence exists. This growing awareness has caused a legislative response which has focused on increasing the reporting of potential abuses. Since 1977, thirty-nine states have enacted legislation providing for the reporting of in-home adult or elder abuse. Seldom has a specific kind of legislation received such popular support and …

Nursing Education In Today's World: Recommendations For A Program In Iowa, Betty Lou Huston Jan 1986

Nursing Education In Today's World: Recommendations For A Program In Iowa, Betty Lou Huston

Graduate Research Papers

The shift from an industrial to a high technology information society is occurring "so rapidly there is no time to react; instead we must anticipate the future" (Naisbitt, 1983, p. 18). John Naisbitt, the social forecaster and author of Megatrends, visualizes that our economy will be based largely on the creation, processing, and distribution of information. Because professional workers are almost all information workers, Naisbitt's prediction means that the demand for professional workers will continue to gain substantially.

The Impact Of Employee Wellness On "Corporate Wellness", Craig Finney Jan 1986

The Impact Of Employee Wellness On "Corporate Wellness", Craig Finney

Visions in Leisure and Business

Corporate policy makers throughout the United States are providing their employees with an employee benefit known as Corporate Recreation/Fitness Programs. While doing so, many policy makers are investing great sums of money to enhance the wellness of the employees. The questions raised are: What is the anticipated return on the investment for these corporations? Does the provision of Corporate Recreation/Fitness Programs enhance corporate profits ("corporate wellness")? Is there a relationship between employee participation in Corporate Recreation/Fitness Programs and work task performance, absenteeism, turnover, stress levels, job satisfaction, and morale? This article presents research results aimed at answering these vital questions.

Pre-Retirement Education As A Component Of Employee Services And Recreation, Andrew Weiner Jan 1986

Pre-Retirement Education As A Component Of Employee Services And Recreation, Andrew Weiner

Visions in Leisure and Business

A rapidly aging society has focused attention on retirement and retirement related issues. Educating individuals to plan for retirement is one of these issues. Presently there is no clear trend with respect to offering pre-retirement education programs, however, if business and industry assumes a major role in program sponsorship then recreation and employee service managers may become instrumental in the organization and administration of these programs. The purpose of this article was to discuss the evolution of pre-retirement education and its relationship to recreation and employee services and to identify major issues and trends which will affect pre-retirement education programs …

Leisure Behavior Of Recent Retirees: Implications For Pre-Retirement Planning, Barbara Wilhite

Visions in Leisure and Business

Changes in leisure behavior after retirement were examined using present and retrospective reports of participation. Seventy-five retirees responded to a three part questionnaire. Analysis revealed considerable continuity in leisure behavior from before to after retirement with overall low frequency of participation. Changes occurring in activities and patterns were interrelated. Significant changes were related to health, population, transportation, income, and life satisfaction. Implications for pre-retirement planning are discussed.

Aging, Leisure, And Modernization: A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Anne L. Binkley Jan 1986

Aging, Leisure, And Modernization: A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Anne L. Binkley

Visions in Leisure and Business

The greying of society has taken on global dimensions with the increasing absolute and relative numbers of elderly in the world. All countries, regardless of their level of development, are being forced to address the issues caused by the world's changing population patterns and to develop solutions which reflect their own unique culture. For the nations of the third world, this task is critical because modernization not only increases the number of aged, but affects community attitudes and the elderly's own self-image.

Two of the challenges which must be met are the maintenance and development of roles which allow the …
