The Effects Of Aquatic Exercise On Self-Concept In The Elderly, Ok Chon Allison

MSN Research Projects

This quasi-experimental research study examined the effects of the aquatic exercise on self-concept in the elderly. The researcher hypothesized that there would be no significant difference in self-concept between elders who participated in an aquatic exercise program and elders who did not participate. A researcher-designed demographic data form and the Tennessee Self Concept Scale were used to collect pertinent data. A total of 22 subjects from two cities 30 miles apart participated in the study. Ten white female subjects were in the experimental group and 9 white and 3 black females were in the control group. The total positive self-concept …

VCU Today, 1972-1988

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. Charge Transfer-Oxy Radical Mechanism For Anti-Cancer Agents, Peter Kovacic, James R. Ames, Paavo Lumme, Hannu Elo, O. Cox, Michael D. Ryan Nov 1986

Charge Transfer-Oxy Radical Mechanism For Anti-Cancer Agents, Peter Kovacic, James R. Ames, Paavo Lumme, Hannu Elo, O. Cox, Michael D. Ryan

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The proposal is advanced that anti-cancer drugs generally function by charge transfer resulting in formation of toxic oxy radicals which destroy the neoplasm. Electrochemical studies were performed with some of the main types of agents: iminium ions (adenine iminium from alkylating species, iminium metabolite of 6-mercaptopurine, nitidine, other polynuclear iminiums) and metal complexes (Pt(II)diaquodiammine-guanosine, copper salicylaldoximes). Reduction potentials ranged from -0.4 to -1.2 V. Literature data for quinones are presented and radiation is discussed. Based on the theoretical framework, a rationale is offered for the carcinogen-anti-cancer paradox and the role of antioxidants.
