Towards A Companion Robot: A Cognitive Agent Model Of The Dynamics Of Loneliness, Hayder M. A. Ghanimi, Shaymaa H. Nowfal

Warith Scientific Journal of Engineering and Technology

Loneliness is a prevalent and global problem for all people, and it can adversely affect their quality of life. Many research investigations have confirmed the negative psychological impacts of loneliness on people’s the unwanted impact of loneliness. Yet, these interventions are missing the power of reasoning to predict the onset of loneliness. Consequently, this paper presented the work of developing a computational cognitive agent model of loneliness using a causal networking modeling approach by relying on discrepancy model as a benchmark to serve as analytics engine for a companion robot design. Loneliness determinants and their causal relationships were identified from …

Between Private Equity And Housing Discrimination: The Long-Term Crisis In St. Louis And Beyond, Harold Braswell, Alexandra Mcnamee, Charitha Bodepudi Jan 2025

Between Private Equity And Housing Discrimination: The Long-Term Crisis In St. Louis And Beyond, Harold Braswell, Alexandra Mcnamee, Charitha Bodepudi

Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy

On December 15, 2023, Northview Village, the largest skilled nursing facility in the Saint Louis region, closed abruptly, leading to the nighttime discharge of 170 residents. This emergency, while unique to that facility, is indicative of a broader crisis in both local and, to a significant extent, national nursing homes. This crisis has partly been catalyzed by the COVID-19 pandemic, but it rests on underlying factors that are unfortunately integral to the financing and operation of long-term care. This article will argue that understanding it requires situating long-term care at the intersection of two broader historical processes: the rise of …

The Intersection Of Regulation, Quality Care Delivery, And Ethics And Compliance: Look Carefully Before Crossing!, David R. Hoffman, Ilene Warner-Maron

Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy

Quality and compliant care delivery in nursing homes remains elusive. Four main interests are currently misaligned, thereby putting nursing home residents at risk of harm. Without a clearly defined commitment to quality and compliant care and alignment of these interests, nursing home residents will remain vulnerable to severe harm.

The first key interest concerns nursing home ownership and management. Currently, over seventy percent of nursing homes are owned by for-profit entities. Previous ownership models, including non-profit, religious-based, and county-owned facilities, have largely closed or transitioned to for-profit entities. The shift in ownership significantly impacts quality and compliant care delivery. Unfortunately, …

What Went Wrong? Identifying The Historical Roots Of Racial Disparities Among Older Adults In Nursing Facilities, Gelila Selassie Jan 2025

What Went Wrong? Identifying The Historical Roots Of Racial Disparities Among Older Adults In Nursing Facilities, Gelila Selassie

Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy

In early 2020, as the nation was just becoming familiar with COVID-19, over a million nursing facility residents were already experiencing crisis-level disasters. Extreme lockdowns, increased hospitalizations, and high mortality rates plagued nursing facilities earlier and far worse than the rest of the population. Data gradually showed that facilities with higher numbers of residents of color were facing particularly dire outcomes.

Although the severity of COVID-19 was surprising, the pandemic highlighted existing and long-standing problems with the country’s long-term care facilities. Many of the problems that led to the horrible disparities during COVID-19 are rooted in a wholly insufficient long-term …

Small Town Voices And Stories: Rural Older Populations And Health Narratives, Wyatt K. Zumbahlen Jan 2025

Small Town Voices And Stories: Rural Older Populations And Health Narratives, Wyatt K. Zumbahlen

Masters Theses

Stories play a vital role in our humanity; they help us understand the world around us. As we age, our experiences, along with those of the people around us, shape our perceptions of health and influence our healthcare choices. For older adults, narratives become an essential resource in making healthcare decisions. In rural communities like Coles County, Illinois, these stories are especially important for older adults who are navigating the limited care and services available in the area. This reliance on narratives impacts their willingness to seek care, highlighting the need to recognize the power of stories in empowering older …

Examining Group Components On Exercise Adherence In Older Adults, Brody Polk Jan 2025

Examining Group Components On Exercise Adherence In Older Adults, Brody Polk

Masters Theses

Older adults remain the least active population despite the well-known benefits of regular exercise (Beauchamp et al., 2007; Rúa-Alonso et al., 2023). Researchers examining exercise adherence in older adults have determined two modalities of training—individual and group—with individual training being the preferred mode of exercise for older adults (Beauchamp et al., 2007). However, previous research has failed to evaluate the various components of group exercise before making a comparison with individual exercise to determine which form best predicts older adults’ adherence to exercise (Hawley-Hague et al., 2014). As such, the purpose of the current study was to examine the effects …

The Geography Of Care: Rural Versus Urban Caregiver Perspectives On Community Resources For Parkinson’S Disease Management, Rebecca Jones Jan 2025

The Geography Of Care: Rural Versus Urban Caregiver Perspectives On Community Resources For Parkinson’S Disease Management, Rebecca Jones

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative study investigated the experiences and perceptions of caregivers for individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) in rural versus urban settings, with particular emphasis on their access to and utilization of community resources. Through semi-structured interviews with 30 caregivers, the research explored how geographical location impacts caregiving challenges, support systems, and resource accessibility. Using Andersen's Behavioral Model of Health Services Use as a theoretical framework, the study revealed both universal caregiving challenges and location-specific barriers. While all caregivers reported significant emotional burden and healthcare system navigation difficulties, rural caregivers faced distinct challenges related to resource accessibility and specialized care availability. …

Perceptions Of Occupational Therapy Student Fieldwork Readiness In The Acute Care Setting, Jackie Dusing, Lisa Borrero, Elizabeth Horrall Stith, Kristina Watkins

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

Occupational therapy student readiness for Level II fieldwork is necessary for preparing novice clinicians and is challenging to assess, as it requires applying didactic knowledge in real-world clinical settings. There is currently a gap in the literature regarding student perceptions of their readiness for Level II fieldwork, especially in the acute care setting. The aim of this qualitative study is to better understand Doctor of Occupational Therapy (OTD) students’ perceptions of readiness for Level II fieldwork in an acute care setting. This basic interpretive qualitative research study utilized a purposeful sampling with students completing their Level II fieldwork in various …

Age Segmentation In The Life Coaching Industry: A Needs-Based Approach, Timothy Reisenwitz Jan 2025

Age Segmentation In The Life Coaching Industry: A Needs-Based Approach, Timothy Reisenwitz

Atlantic Marketing Journal

Life coaching is the second-fastest-growing industry in the world. Most previous research has used a results-based approach with relatively small sample sizes. The current research uses a needs-based approach to identify whether older or younger consumers are better candidates for a life coaching session or program. A hard-copy questionnaire used existing scales based on industry indicators to identify viable life-coaching clients. A multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) was used to analyze the data, with gender as the covariate or moderating variable. Results showed that younger consumers are generally better candidates for life coaching, while gender was only significant for one …

Hopping Kinetic Differences In Masters Runners With And Without Achilles Tendinopathy, Matthew Klein, Chris Patterson, Annette Karim, Tyler Cuddeford

Faculty Publications - College of Physical Therapy

Achilles tendinopathy (AT) is the most common running-related pathology among masters runners. Previous evidence suggests there are no differences in submaximal running biomechanics between masters runners with and without AT. Evidence suggests lower extremity power deficits are common among ageing individuals and those with AT. The single-leg horizontal hop (SLHH) test isa valid and reliable lower extremity power test. The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in SLHH biomechanics between masters runners with and without AT. 32 masters runners age 50 and older with AT (60.31 ± 8.37, n = 16) and without (59.94 ±4.95 n = 16) …

Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology Faculty Publications

Objective:

Despite a decline in cigarette use, the dual use of cigarettes and electronic vaping products (EVPs) is a concerning pattern of nicotine consumption in the United States. Anxiety, a risk factor for tobacco use, may contribute to dual-use patterns; however, the association between daily anxiety symptoms and dual use of cigarettes and EVPs is not known. This study investigated associations between daily anxiety symptoms and dual cigarette and EVP use overall and by sex, race, and ethnicity.

Method:

Data are from the 2020–2022 National Health Interview Survey (n = 83,544). Multinomial logistic regression models, adjusted for sociodemographic factors, …

Examining The Relationship Between Cognitive Auditory Processing And Sex Hormones, Trey A. Cline Jan 2025

Examining The Relationship Between Cognitive Auditory Processing And Sex Hormones, Trey A. Cline

Theses and Dissertations--Gerontology

Estrogen and progesterone have demonstrated modulatory effects on central auditory nervous system (CANS) function. Post-menopausal females often present to audiology clinics with complaints of difficulty hearing in background noise. However, these individuals often have normal peripheral hearing sensitivity on standard audiometry. Previous studies using the auditory brainstem response (ABR) in post-menopausal females demonstrated longer response latencies compared to their premenopausal counterparts, suggesting that sound does not transmit through the CANS as efficiently. However, to date, the available literature focused on sex hormones and the CANS relies mainly on objective measures, predominantly the ABR. The ABR reflects physiologic function through the …

Mental Health Disparities From Climate Change: Age Differences And Structural Drivers Across California, Elizabeth Choa Jan 2025

Mental Health Disparities From Climate Change: Age Differences And Structural Drivers Across California, Elizabeth Choa

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Background: The health impacts of climate change are shaped by a complex interplay of geopolitical, ecological, and socioeconomic forces. Climate events impose substantial personal and societal costs, draining resources and deepening existing vulnerabilities within communities. Yet few studies examine how these dynamics affect groups often overlooked in climate–health discourse, including LGBTQ+ individuals, informal caregivers, and older adults. Objective: To examine how individual, community, and structural-level factors influence both climate vulnerability (defined as susceptibility to adverse health impacts) and climate resilience (the capacity to adapt to and withstand climate-related stressors). Focusing on diverse adult populations in California, this dissertation aims to …

Reducing Dementia Risk By Identifying And Promoting Social Determinants: A Multi-Site And Multi-Method Study, Jose M. Aravena Jan 2025

Reducing Dementia Risk By Identifying And Promoting Social Determinants: A Multi-Site And Multi-Method Study, Jose M. Aravena

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Background: Dementia is one of the leading causes of disability and death, and the most feared condition by older adults. Although encouraging evidence has shown that lifestyle can play a pivotal role in dementia prevention, dementia incidence is still increasing in those groups that are at most risk. A largely unexplored explanation for this phenomenon in high-risk groups is the effect of social determinants of health (SDH), a range of structural (i.e., social position, healthcare services) and psychosocial determinants (ageism, social perceptions of dementia) that can be a major modifiable driver of brain and cognitive health. Thus, by using three …

Mixed-Use Developments And Urban Megaprojects In The Global South : A Systematic Review And Interpretation Of A Blurred Intersection, Federico Puggioni, Nij Tontisirin Jan 2025

Mixed-Use Developments And Urban Megaprojects In The Global South : A Systematic Review And Interpretation Of A Blurred Intersection, Federico Puggioni, Nij Tontisirin

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

This article examines the intersection of two distinct strains of urban studies: mixed-use development and urban megaprojects, through a systematic review of literature. One strain focuses on integrating diverse uses and functions within a single space, known as 'mixed-use'. The other originates from the technical complexities of megaprojects adapted to architecture and urban design. The article seeks to address a gap in the literature by clarifying the conceptual yet geographical overlaps between these two strains, which often have broad, blurred boundaries; it proposes a novel framework for defining and interpreting the related literature at this conceptual intersection.

The Effectiveness Of Botulinum Toxin Injections In The Management Of Chronic Neck And Shoulder Myofascial Pain: A Nursing Perspective, Jia Zhou Jan 2025

The Effectiveness Of Botulinum Toxin Injections In The Management Of Chronic Neck And Shoulder Myofascial Pain: A Nursing Perspective, Jia Zhou

Nursing | Senior Theses

Abstract

Background

Chronic neck and shoulder myofascial pain has long been challenging patients and medical professionals due to its limited response to traditional therapies on top of high recurrence. Physical therapy, oral analgesics, and trigger point injections have only provided partial or short-term relief. As a result, botulinum toxin type A injections have been explored as an alternative treatment. Previous studies have shown promising short-term outcomes, but concerns regarding long-term safety, cost-effectiveness, and potential adverse effects, particularly in older adults, have remained unresolved. These gaps have highlighted the need for comprehensive evaluation from both clinical and nursing perspectives.

Objective

The …
