The Power Of Connection: Unraveling The Significance Of Social Support In The Stress Levels Of Informal Black Women Caregivers, Antoinette Shantay Williams

All ETDs from UAB

This study examines how three types of social support—having someone to talk to, someone to help with activities, and someone to provide care—affect the stress levels of informal Black women caregivers compared to Black men, White men, and White women caregivers in the United States. It explores the intersection of race and gender, with a specific focus on how social support influences the emotional, financial, and physical stress levels of informal Black women caregivers. This research aimed to answer two questions. Does social support decrease stress levels among informal caregivers? Does the association between social support and stress levels differ …

Urine Retention Versus Post-Obstructive Diuresis As A Potential Cause Of Acute Hyponatremia: A Case Report, Akram M. Eraky, Sean Hickey, Adnan Khan

GME Publications

Acute urine retention is a common urologic emergency that is frequently seen in the Emergency room (ER). Standard treatment includes placing a urinary catheter or a suprapubic catheter with outpatient urologic follow-up. Urine retention can cause complications, such as hyponatremia and post-obstructive diuresis. It is crucial to diagnose and manage these life-threatening complications appropriately. Herein, we present a case of urine retention-induced hyponatremia. The patient’s urine sodium level and osmolality were consistent with the diagnosis of syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone (SIADH). In this patient, sodium autocorrection started after a urinary catheter placement. Hypotonic saline was administered to prevent rapid …

Virtual Reality Game-Based Training For Preventing Falls Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults With Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Pilot Randomized Control Trial Study, Benson Ip

School of Health Professions

Using a Virtual Reality (VR) game-based application represents an innovative approach to falls prevention in community aged care service. The study investigated the effects of VR training on falls prevention among community-dwelling older adults with mild cognitive impairment. A pilot randomized controlled trial was conducted to compare the effects of full-immersive VR training with group-based exercise (Baduanjin) training on falls prevention. Eighteen participants were recruited through convenience sampling and were randomly assigned to either the VR group or the non-VR exercise group. Both groups participated in 16 falls prevention training sessions over eight weeks. Participants, identified with mild cognitive impairment …

An Agent-Based Model Of Microglia And Neuron Interaction: Implications In Neurodegenerative Disease, Cheyenne Ty, Amanda Case, Emmanuel Mezzulo, Abigail Penland, Kamila Larripa

Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics

Whether immune cells protect or harm the brain is an open question depending on context, and their role is implicated in multiple diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, dementia, and other neurological disorders. Microglia, a specific type of immune cell in the central nervous system, play a key role in homeostasis, and genes associated with an elevated risk of Alzheimer's disease correspond with deficiencies in their behavior. We created an agent-based model that incorporates inflammatory signaling, chemotaxis, and phagocytosis of damaged neurons and allows the exploration of crucial pathways in the maintenance of brain health. We specifically investigated pathways related to …

Predictors Of Treatment Completion In Alternatives For Families: A Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Katharine Murphy Jan 2025

Predictors Of Treatment Completion In Alternatives For Families: A Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Katharine Murphy

Theses and Dissertations

Child maltreatment is linked to a range of adverse outcomes, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety and mood disorders, and behavioral and interpersonal problems (Copeland et al., 2007; McLaughlin et al., 2013; Silverman et al., 2008). Children subjected to abuse by caregivers have the highest risk of PTSD onset (Alisic et al., 2014). To mitigate these effects, Alternatives for Families: A Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (AF-CBT; Kolko, et al., 2011) was developed to improve caregiver-child relationships. AF-CBT has proven effective in reducing family conflict, improving child symptomatology, and minimizing the potential for child abuse (Kolko, 1996a, 1996b; Swenson & Brown, 1999). …

Assessing Older Adults’ Readiness For Adopting Fall Prevention Recommendations Using The Transtheoretical Stages Of Change, Janice Mark, Ankita Henry, Briana Moreland, Dawson Dobash, Gwendolyn Bergen

Nursing and Health Professions Faculty Research and Publications

Objectives: Reducing fall risk requires older adults (age 65+) to adopt effective prevention strategies. This study has three aims: 1) understand Stage of Change (SOC) for three fall prevention strategies; 2) determine strategies older adults’ use; and 3) understand which characteristics relate to readiness to take action.

Methods: A survey of 1063 older adults assessed fall risk, SOC, and use of fall prevention strategies. Data analysis included descriptive statistics and regression analysis.

Results: The most common SOC for older adults by strategy was action for overall fall prevention (61%), contemplation for medication management (45%) and preparation and …

Health Sciences Faculty Publications

This study examined the effectiveness of service-learning as a pedagogical approach in a course offered to business management students. Employing a quasi-experimental design, the research compared student outcomes between an experimental group that incorporated service-learning and a control group that underwent traditional teaching methods. These student outcomes included knowledge application, personal and professional skills, civic orientation and engagement, and self-awareness. The results revealed that students participating in service-learning significantly gained self-reflection skills, self-efficacy, and a sense of social responsibility compared to their peers undergoing traditional teaching approaches. However, no statistically significant differences were observed in the other areas. These results …

Observing Activity With Multi-Sensory And Single Sensory Enrichment As Means Of Improving Animal Welfare For An American Alligator (Alligator Mississippiensis), Melody Fulmer

Theses & ETDs

American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) are large reptiles living in marshy areas and are mostly active at night. Though being active at night is a natural behavior for them, alligators in human care will tend to adjust to their keepers schedule when getting fed and offered enrichment during the day. The goal for this project was to find an enrichment for an alligator in human care and help encourage her to become more active at night as a means to increase her wellbeing in human care. I tested the hypothesis that she will find multi-sensory enrichment more engaging over single sensory …

Patient Autonomy, Public Safety, And Drivers With Cognitive Decline, Sharona Hoffman, Cassandra Burke Robertson Jan 2025

Patient Autonomy, Public Safety, And Drivers With Cognitive Decline, Sharona Hoffman, Cassandra Burke Robertson

Faculty Publications

With a growing elderly population, cognitive decline in drivers has become a significant public safety concern. Currently, over thirty-two million individuals who are seventy or older have driver’s licenses, and that number is growing quickly. In addition, almost ten percent of U.S. seniors (those sixty-five and older) have dementia, and an additional twenty-two percent have mild cognitive impairment. Between a quarter and a half of individuals with mild to moderate dementia still drive. As cognitive abilities such as memory, attention, and decision-making skills deteriorate, a driver's ability to operate a vehicle safely can be compromised. This not only puts the …

Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications

Lavery Library is the sole library for St. John Fisher University and its five schools. The university is located in a small suburb in western New York State. Over the past decade we experienced many transformational changes. Some of these changes include our parent institution’s designation moving from college to university and the expansion of hybrid and online programs. The program expansions, combined with exploring textbook borrowing and changes to library services post-Covid, propelled the library staff to reimagine Interlibrary Loan (ILL) services for distance patrons. From our first online program policies in 2012 to the present day, this chapter …

Associations Between Older Hispanics’ Diabetes Control And Their Caregiver’S Health Literacy, Jorge Rico

Nursing Dissertations - Archive

Background: Older Spanish-speaking Hispanics are a rapidly growing population in the United States that face disproportionally high rates of diabetes and inadequate health literacy. Familism is valued among Hispanics and caregivers may play an important role in overcoming the social determinants of health facing this vulnerable population. Methods: This descriptive correlation study sought to explore correlations between the caregiver’s health literacy and the patient’s control of diabetes. Findings: Mixed effects model found a significant correlation between the caregiver’s print literacy and the patient’s hemoglobin A1c. Conclusion: The findings are encouraging for future research to explore interventions that target the caregivers …

Perception Of Spirituality By Intensive Care Unit Nurses, Adejoke Felicia Ogidan Jan 2025

Perception Of Spirituality By Intensive Care Unit Nurses, Adejoke Felicia Ogidan

Nursing Dissertations - Archive

ICU nurses are identified as a population of nurses with a high risk of experiencing psychological stress due to the nature of their job in the ICU (Lyndon, 2015; Welp et al., 2015). Psychological stress is detrimental to nurses' mental health and the quality of patient care.

According to Watson’s Transpersonal Human Caring Theory, the spiritual perception of the nurse influences the nurse’s spiritual care practice, which in turn affects their self-care and care provided by the nurse to patients (Watson, 2021)This research explored the ICU-Ns' perception of spirituality and its relationships with spiritual care practices and self-assessed competency in …

The Lived Experiences Of Older Adults With Cancer Who Are Non-Adherent To Prescribed Oral Chemotherapy: A Descriptive Phenomenological Study, Ludmila Kosmari Jan 2025

The Lived Experiences Of Older Adults With Cancer Who Are Non-Adherent To Prescribed Oral Chemotherapy: A Descriptive Phenomenological Study, Ludmila Kosmari

Nursing Dissertations - Archive

Background: Despite the ease of receiving OCT, patients’ OCT adherence is low. With this low prevalence rate, patients are not likely obtaining the full life-promoting effects of OCT. Since medication adherence is often related to lived experiences and standardized medication adherence instruments may not capture these experiences completely, the purpose of this study was to explore how the lived experiences of older adults with cancer influence their adherence to OCT.

Methods: the researcher used a descriptive phenomenological design and conducted individual interviews with 20 older adults with cancer. All participants were prescribed OCT and reported missing at least one dose. …

Case Management For End-Stage Renal Disease Patients, Jamie L. Andrews Jan 2025

Case Management For End-Stage Renal Disease Patients, Jamie L. Andrews

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects - Archive

Background: Social determinants of health (SDOH) and health literacy directly impact adults with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on hemodialysis (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases [NIDDK], 2022; Ulrich, 2020). Adults with ESRD account for 1.5 million hospital admissions and 500,000 re-admissions within 30 days annually (NIDDK, 2022). Case management is essential in reducing re-admissions for adult ESRD patients, requiring abilities to identify factors affecting adult ESRD patients appropriately.

Methods: Therefore, an evidence-based practice (EBP) project using the IOWA Model framework was implemented to increase the knowledge base in identifying care and resources for ESRD patients for telephonic …

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects - Archive

Introduction: The lack of education and use of the Cognitive Assessment and Care Planning Services (CACPS) visit creates a gap in care for Medicare patients over the age of 65 with cognitive impairment.

Methods: Recommendations were created from a robust collection of graded, evidence-based literature. The recommendations were presented to a set of stakeholders who rated each recommendation on a Likert scale from 1 (poor) to 4 (excellent).

Results: The twelve stakeholders agreed with the recommendations to support the education and use of the CACPS visit for Medicare patients 65 and older.

Conclusion: This guideline promotes provider education to investigate …

The Human Dimension Of “Home”, Robert A. Destro Jan 2025

The Human Dimension Of “Home”, Robert A. Destro

Scholarly Articles

All societies provide a legal framework that protects the pivotal functions of home and family. None provide a clear legal definition of “home”. Nor, this article argues, can they. “Home” is a concept rooted in the lived experience of human persons. In this article, the second in a series, the author employs the “human dimension” [HDIM] concept, initially developed by the U.S. military and later adopted by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, as the lens through which one can examine the “human element” of human rights. The framework for this analysis is the “four clusters of value-types” …
