Active Tectonics In Southern Alaska And The Role Of The Yakutat Block Constrained By Gps Measurements, Julie Elliott Apr 2011

Active Tectonics In Southern Alaska And The Role Of The Yakutat Block Constrained By Gps Measurements, Julie Elliott

Geosciences

GPS data from southern Alaska and the northern Canadian Cordillera have helped redefine the region's tectonic landscape. Instead of a comparatively simple interaction between the Pacific and North American plates, with relative motion accommodated on a single boundary fault, the margin is made up of a number of small blocks and deformation zones with relative motion distributed across a variety of structures. Much of this complexity can be attributed to the Yakutat block, an allochthonous terrane that has been colliding with southern Alaska since the Miocene. This thesis presents GPS data from across the region and uses it to constrain …

Taxonomy, Nomenclature, And Evolution Of The Early Schubertellid Fusulinids, Vladimir I. Davydov Mar 2011

Taxonomy, Nomenclature, And Evolution Of The Early Schubertellid Fusulinids, Vladimir I. Davydov

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

The types of the species belonging to the fusulinid genera Schubertella and Eoschubertella were examined from publications and type collections. Eoschubertella in general possesses all the features of Schubertella and therefore is a junior synonym of the latter. However, the concept of Eoschubertella best describes the genus Schubertina with its type species Schubertina curculi. Schubertina is closely related to the newly established genus Grovesella the concept of which is emended in this paper. Besides Schubertella, Schubertina, and Grovesella, the genera Mesoschubertella, Biwaella are reviewed and three new species, Grovesella nevadensis, Biwaella zhikalyaki, and Biwaella poletaevi, are described. The phylogenetic relationships …

New Data On The Upper Jurassic–Lower Cretaceous Limestones From Bihor Mountains: Case Study Of Gârda Seacă-Hodobana Region, Romania, Valentin Turi, Emanoil Sasaran, Ioan I. Bucur

Studia UBB Geologia

This study refers to some problems regarding the lithological succession, facies and carbonate microfacies, and to biostratigraphic markers of the Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous carbonates from Bihor Mountains. Three types of facies (external marginal facies, subtidal and peritidal facies) were separated for the Upper Jurassic, and two (coastal-peritidal and open shelf facies) for the Lower Cretaceous carbonates. The micropaleontological assemblages identified contain species that allow the separation of the two formations of different age: Labyrinthina mirabilis, Kurnubia palastiniensis, Neokilianina rahonensis, Clypeina sulcata (Kimmeridgian-Lower Tithonian) and Parakoskinolina? jourdanensis, Montseciella arabica, Palorbitolina lenticularis, Falsolikanella danilovae (Barremian – Lower Aptian). Field observations and data …

Profiles In Science For Science Librarians: "What Lives Where, And Why": Alfred Russel Wallace, And The Field Of Biogeography, Charles H. Smith

DLPS Faculty Publications

Biogeography, the study of animal and plant distribution, has a history extending back to at least the eighteenth century. But it was not until the work of Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace in the mid-nineteenth century that it really came into its own as a science. Darwin’s importance notwithstanding, it was really Wallace who put the field on the map, and many of today’s research threads can be traced back to his influence. This article provides a summary review of Wallace’s life and work and biogeography as a field of study, including Wallace’s role in its development.

Coastal Land Loss And Hypoxia: The 'Outwelling' Hypothesis Revisited, Anindita Das, Dubravko Justic, Erick M. Swenson, R. Euigene Turner, Masamichi Inoue, Dongho Park

Faculty Publications

It is generally believed that interannual variability in the areal extent of the Gulf of Mexico hypoxia is driven primarily by the magnitude of the Mississippi River freshwater and nutrient fluxes. It has recently been proposed that outwelling of carbon from deteriorating coastal wetlands into the surrounding Gulf of Mexico could be an important mechanism promoting the development of hypoxia. We used a coupled hydrology-hydrodynamics model of the Barataria estuary, a site of massive wetland loss, to calculate the fluxes of nitrogen, chlorophyll a and carbon at the estuary-ocean interface. The hydrology model calculates runoff from rainfall and evaporation data, …

The Arctic Council: Gatekeeper Or Doormat To The World’S Next Major Resource Battle?, Oded Cedar Jan 2011

The Arctic Council: Gatekeeper Or Doormat To The World’S Next Major Resource Battle?, Oded Cedar

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

Over the last decade, a coalescence of different factors has shifted the search for natural resources such as oil and gas to the Arctic. Advances in exploration, drilling, and extraction technologies have helped mitigate the traditionally cost-prohibitive factors of developing ice-locked reserves. Geopolitical concerns about the waning global supply of oil and gas have also driven countries to explore for these resources in the Arctic. However, the primary force behind this focus is the undeniable fact that the Earth’s changing climate is melting away the Arctic’s ice sheet and permafrost, making the region’s oil and gas reserves accessible for the …

Late Cenozoic Oscillations Of Antarctic Ice Sheets Revealed By Provenance Of Basement Clasts And Grain Detrital Modes In Andrill Core And-1b, Franco M. Talarico, Robert M. Mckay, Ross D. Powell, Sonia Sandroni, Tim Naish Jan 2011

Late Cenozoic Oscillations Of Antarctic Ice Sheets Revealed By Provenance Of Basement Clasts And Grain Detrital Modes In Andrill Core And-1b, Franco M. Talarico, Robert M. Mckay, Ross D. Powell, Sonia Sandroni, Tim Naish

ANDRILL Research and Publications

Petrological investigations of the sand fraction and of granule- to cobble-sized clasts in the Plio-Pleistocene sedimentary cycles of the AND-1B drill core at the NW edge of the Ross Ice Shelf (McMurdo Sound) highlight significant down-core modal and compositional variations. These variations provide: (i) direct information about potential source regions during both glacial maxima and minima; and (ii) evidence of an evolving provenance, documented by long-term shifts in compositional patterns that can be interpreted as reflecting variations in ice volume and ice sheet thermal regimes and changes in paleogeography related to the emergence of several volcanic centers during the deposition …

Geophysical Reconnaissance Of Karst Sinkhole Occurrences In Jeram, Kinta Valley, West Malaysia After The 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake, R.F. Muhammad, O. Al-Kouri, R. Yassin, C.N. Lat

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Geophysical and geospatial reconnaissance of karst features associated with sinkholes has been carried out in Jeram, Perak, West Malaysia. A rapid increase of sinkholes occurrences were reported after the disastrous 26th Dec. 2004 earthquake in Sumatera. Over 45 sinkholes of various sizes occurred in a small area of the ex-mine land. Many cavities are present in the subsurface karst that is covered by thin layers of loose sands and clay materials. These cavities are thought to be pre-existing features that had been rapidly filled with sand/clay, due to the tremor triggered from the earthquake.

Chronology And Ecology Of Late Pleistocene Megafauna In The Northern Willamette Valley, Oregon, Daniel Mcgowan Gilmour Jan 2011

Chronology And Ecology Of Late Pleistocene Megafauna In The Northern Willamette Valley, Oregon, Daniel Mcgowan Gilmour

Dissertations and Theses

This study is an investigation of the timing of extinction of late Pleistocene, large bodied mammalian herbivores (megafauna) and of the environment in which they lived. The demise of the megafauna near the end of the Pleistocene remains unexplained. Owing to potential human involvement in the extinctions, archaeologists have been particularly concerned to understand the causes for faunal losses. Our current lack of understanding of the timing and the causes of the extinctions in North America may result from a deficiency in understanding the histories of each individual species of extinct animal on a local level. Detailed regional chronologies of …

Honors Theses

Upper Paleocene–Eocene boulder conglomerate, cross-stratified sandstone, and laminated carbonaceous mudstone of the Arkose Ridge Formation exposed in the southern Talkeetna Mountains record fluvial-lacustrine deposition proximal to the volcanic arc in a forearc basin modified by Paleogene spreading ridge subduction beneath southern Alaska. U-Pb ages of detrital zircon grains and modal analyses were obtained from stratigraphic sections spanning the 2,000 m thick Arkose Ridge Formation in order to constrain the lithology, age, and location of sediment sources that provided detritus. Detrital modes from 24 conglomerate beds and 54 sandstone thin sections aredominated by plutonic and volcanic clasts and plagioclase feldspar with …

Crustal Structure Across The Central Alaska Range: Anatomy Of A Mesozoic Collisional Zone, P.R.K. Brennan, H. Gilbert, K. D. Ridgway Jan 2011

Crustal Structure Across The Central Alaska Range: Anatomy Of A Mesozoic Collisional Zone, P.R.K. Brennan, H. Gilbert, K. D. Ridgway

Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences Faculty Publications

A first-order process in the growth of continents is the collision and accretion of terranes against continental margins. Collision leads to the formation of a suture zone between the accreted terrane and the former continental margin. New insights on the suturing process are observed from two receiver function transects across the Mesozoic Alaska Range suture zone. Three distinct crustal sections are identified from observations of crustal thickness, intracrustal discontinuities, and Vp/Vs: a northern section with ∼27 km thick crust of felsic to intermediate composition, a central section that is ∼37 km thick that exhibits intracrustal discontinuities and has felsic to …

Interpretation Of Well Test Data From Two Hydraulically Communicating Reservoirs, Bander Ibrahim Al Quaimi Jan 2011

Interpretation Of Well Test Data From Two Hydraulically Communicating Reservoirs, Bander Ibrahim Al Quaimi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Naturally fractured reservoirs (NFR) have been receiving more attention than ever since the beginning of the last decade due to various reasons. The current understanding is not sufficient to achieve a favorable recovery factor due to the complexity associated with the fracture characterization and the dynamic behavior of the fractured system. The majority of the fractured reservoirs are developed. Therefore, before proceeding into secondary or possibly tertiary recovery processes a thorough understanding must be reached to avoid undesirable results. The huge reserve volume present in fractured oil and gas reservoirs motivate engineers, researchers, and geoscientists to exert additional efforts to …

Designing And Using Virtual Field Environments To Enhance And Extend Field Experience In Professional Development Programs In Geology For K-12 Teachers, Frank Douglas Granshaw

Dissertations and Theses

Virtual reality (VR) is increasingly used to acquaint geoscience novices with some of the observation, data gathering, and problem solving done in actual field situations by geoscientists. VR environments in a variety of forms are used to prepare students for doing geologic fieldwork, as well as to provide proxies for such experience when venturing into the field is not possible. However, despite increased use of VR for these purposes, there is little research on how students learn using these environments, how using them impacts student field experience, or what constitutes effective design in light of emerging theories of geocognition.

Deforestation, Drought And Humans: New Discoveries Of The Late Quaternary Paleoenvironment Of Rapa Nui (Easter Island), Candace Lynn Gossen

Dissertations and Theses

The mystery of the trees of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) is a complex problem within a dynamic ecosystem. With new physical cores from the volcanic crater lake Rano Kao, this dissertation uncovers a detailed 15,000 year ecological history of Easter Island and its climatic variability. New radiocarbon dating methods establish a more precise chronology which shows that the island before human habitation was very different than what we know today. It had a simple but prolific ecology that transitioned into a barren grassland. What factors caused the transition are unclear but are likely to be human related. As the forests …

On Constrained Optimization Schemes For Joint Inversion Of Geophysical Datasets, Uram Anibal Sosa Aguirre Jan 2011

On Constrained Optimization Schemes For Joint Inversion Of Geophysical Datasets, Uram Anibal Sosa Aguirre

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In the area of geological sciences, there exist several experimental techniques used to advance in the understanding of the Earth. We implement a joint inversion least-squares (LSQ) algorithm to characterize one dimensional Earth's structure by using seismic shear wave velocities as a model parameter. We use two geophysical datasets sensitive to shear velocities, namely Receiver Function and Surface Wave dispersion velocity observations, with a choice of an optimization method: Truncated Singular Value Decomposition (TSVD) or Primal-Dual Interior-Point (PDIP). The TSVD and the PDIP methods solve a regularized unconstrained and a constrained minimization problem, respectively. Both techniques include bounds into the …

Framework For Development Of Clean Coal: Consultation Response, He Huppert, Mj Golding, Ma Hallworth, Et Al

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

We welcome the broad thrust of the draft framework for the development of clean coal. We are particularly pleased to note the emphasis on a diverse range of measures for mitigating climate change, the recognition that both market-based and regulatory approaches to encouraging the deployment of CCS are valuable, and the suggestion that the proposed requirement to demonstrate CCS should apply immediately. We make several suggestions on matters of detail in response to the consultation questions. Specifically, we suggest the establishment of a process of continual review of the realistic capacity of carbon dioxide storage reservoirs. We further suggest that, …

Investigation Of Neotectonic Activity Within The Shallow, Unconsolidated Stratigraphy Of The Pearl River Delta Area, Louisiana, Dane Fischer

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

During the last half century researchers have suggested that active deformation driven by neotectonic activity has locally influenced areas of southeastern Louisiana in the form of wetland loss and coastal erosion. This study, within the Pearl River Delta Area of Louisiana, applied geomorphologic and stratigraphic methods of analysis to assess whether evidence of recent fault motion is present within the shallow, unconsolidated Holocene strata of the study area. Geomorphological historical change analyses focused on meander patterns, elongated water bodies and spatial changes in vegetation identify areas where fault motion may have recently occurred. The shallow stratigraphy was then investigated in …
