Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Eskişehir Fault Zone is one of the major neotectonic structures of Turkey, extending from İnegöl (Bursa) to Cihanbeyli (Konya). The fault zone presents a considerable seismic risk for the city of Eskişehir but the exact locations of active segments and the source of the major seismic event, the 1956 earthquake (M = 6.5) that occurred in the instrumental period (from 1900 to 2013), have been debated in recent literature. The structural data obtained from field studies indicate an approximately N60W-trending main strand of the right lateral strike-slip Eskişehir Fault Zone. This trend corresponds to the en echelon bends on …

“The Great And Terrible Judgments Of The Lord”: Destruction And Disaster In 3 Nephi And The Geology Of Mesoamerica, Neal Rappleye
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Over recent decades, several Latter-day Saint scholars and scientists have offered analysis and comparison to geologic events and the destruction recorded in 3 Nephi 8-9. Jerry Grover makes an important contribution to this literature as he provides background on geologic processes and phenomena, details the geologic features of the Tehuantepec region (Mesoamerica), and applies this information to not only the description of 3 Nephi 8-9, but other incidents in the Book of Mormon likely connected to geologic events. In doing so, Grover yields new insights into the narratives he examines, and adds clarity to geographic details that have been subject …

Early Permian Conodont Fauna And Stratigraphy Of The Garden Valley Formation, Eureka County, Nevada, Bruce R. Wardlaw, Dora M. Gallegos, Valery V. Chernykh, Walter S. Snyder
Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
The lower part of the Garden Valley Formation yields two distinct conodont faunas. One of late Asselian age dominated by Mesogondolella and Streptognathodus and one of Artinskian age dominated by Sweetognathus with Mesogondolella. The Asselian fauna contains the same species as those found in the type area of the Asselian in the southern Urals including Mesogondolella dentiseparata, described for the first time outside of the Urals. Apparatuses for Sweetognathus whitei, Diplognathodus stevensi, and Idioprioniodus sp. are described. The Garden Valley Formation represents a marine pro-delta basin and platform, and marine and shore fan delta complex deposition. …
Mass Spectrometric Studies On Petroleum Asphaltenes And Organosulfur Compounds, On Functional-Group Selective Ion-Molecule Reactions And On Gas-Phase Reactivity Of Meta-Benzynes Toward Amino Acids, Weijuan Tang
Open Access Dissertations
Mass spectrometry has found a wide variety of applications in many fields of study, such as fundamental chemistry, biological science, food and fuels, advanced materials, etc. Due to its high sensitivity, selectivity and speed, mass spectrometry provides an invaluable tool for direct mixture analysis. When coupled with separation methods, such as gas chromatography or high performance liquid chromatography, analysis of minor components in complex mixtures is possible. In addition to the molecular weight information, mass spectrometers can provide structural information for the ionized analyte molecules. However, mass spectrometric analysis of complex mixtures is not without challenges, such as suitable evaporation/ionization …

Evaluating Methods Of Field-Based 3d Visualization And Their Application To Mapping Metamorphic Terranes: An Example From The Panamint Mountains, California, Jade Ashley Brush
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Field geology has traditionally relied on 2D, paper-based workflows, but digital mapping techniques are rapidly replacing these outdated methods because they allow for more efficient and accurate mapping. This research applies digital mapping techniques and two terrestrially-based 3D visualization technologies, photogrammetry and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), to the study of metamorphic terranes in the Panamint Mountains, California. This study reports on the spatial accuracy of TINs (triangulated irregular networks) generated from both photogrammetry and ground-based LiDAR using a terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) and discusses how spatial accuracy can be increased. Two levels of comparison were used to test spatial …

The 2015 Maritime Doctrine Of The Russian Federation, Russia Maritime Studies Institute, Anna Davis
RMSI Research
The 2015 Maritime Doctrine of the Russian Federation is arguably one of the most important doctrinal statements to emerge from that country in recent years. It is in any case Russia’s most important recent articulation of its maritime interests and goals, and therefore provides insight into how Moscow envisions Russia’s global role. Yet because of the challenges of reading Russian and the absence of a publicly available translation of this essential document, western understanding of it is largely limited.

Thermal Perturbations Beneath The Incipient Okavango Rift Zone, Northwest Botswana, Khumo Leseane, Estella A. Atekwana, Kevin L. Mickus, Mohamed G. Abdelsalam, Elisha M. Shemang, Eliot A. Atekwana
College of Natural and Applied Sciences
We used aeromagnetic and gravity data to investigate the thermal structure beneath the incipient Okavango Rift Zone (ORZ) in northwestern Botswana in order to understand its role in strain localization during rift initiation. We used three-dimensional (3-D) inversion of aeromagnetic data to estimate the Curie Point Depth (CPD) and heat flow under the rift and surrounding basement. We also used two-dimensional (2-D) power-density spectrum analysis of gravity data to estimate the Moho depth. Our results reveal shallow CPD values (8-15 km) and high heat flow (60-90 mW m-2>) beneath a ~60 km wide NE-trending zone coincident with major …

Mesoamerican Sacred Geography And Archeological Landscapes: A Case Study In The Volcanic Highlands Of Michoacan, Mexico, Jarod Scott Drozdowski
All Master's Theses
US and Mexican teams have investigated the La Alberca Structure Complex with the community of Parangaricutiro. Their forest reserve, located near San Juan Nuevo in Michoacan, Mexico, contains several volcanic cones, including the famous Paricutin cinder cone. Sixteen earthen-rock structures have been mapped using aerial photography, GPS, GIS, and total station surveys. The structures range from 300 to 2,400 cubic meters in volume. The larger mound-like structures are traditionally called yacatas. Early radiocarbon dates for two of the three central structures (ca. 5200-2000 BCE) bracket dates for the Late Archaic burial in the La Alberca caldera. Arrangements of the larger …
Post-Treatment Assessment Of Hydraulic Fracturing With Integrated Modeling Of Natural Fracture Distribution, Ping Puyang
Post-Treatment Assessment Of Hydraulic Fracturing With Integrated Modeling Of Natural Fracture Distribution, Ping Puyang
LSU Master's Theses
Hydraulic fracturing has been serving as the principal reservoir stimulation technique for decades to improve production capacities of low permeability formations. On the other hand, through core and outcrop studies, advanced logging tools, microseismic fracture mapping and well testing analysis, it has been further revealed that many of the shale gas formations are naturally fractured. The presence of natural fractures and their interactions with hydraulic fractures must be taken into consideration while designing fracturing treatment. Although most natural fractures are cemented by precipitations during diagenesis, they may be reactivated during hydraulic fracturing and serve as weak paths for fluid flow …

Geochemistry And Petrography Of Igneous Components Of The Dalles Formation In The Dufur West Quadrangle, Oregon, Heather H. Herinckx
University Honors Theses
The Dalles Formation is a sequence of volcanic, volcaniclastic and sedimentary deposits of the late Miocene to Pliocene. The unit stretches along the eastern flanks of Mount Hood from Maupin, northward to the Columbia River, near The Dalles, Oregon (Figure 1). The Dalles Formation consists of lavas that are generally dacitic in composition and are composed of block-and-ash flows, debris-flows, and reworked fluvial sediments. Past workers have mapped the unit as the Dalles Formation "Undivided". The scope of this project has been to investigate the geochemical and petrographic characteristics and whether they may suggest distinct units. A section of the …
Discovery Islands, Earth Islands: The Theory And Practice Of Island Imagery In Environmental Thought, Naomi A. Bosch
Discovery Islands, Earth Islands: The Theory And Practice Of Island Imagery In Environmental Thought, Naomi A. Bosch
Pomona Senior Theses
Earth Island is a core metaphor of activist thought often applied in Environmental Analysis and related fields as a tool for thinking about the planet’s limited resources. It puts forth the claim that if only we thought of the earth as more like an island, we would better understand our connectivity to other living things and be drawn to develop better and more extensive practices of environmental stewardship. This thesis uses personal accounts of environmental life philosophies and political practices collected from residents of the Discovery Islands in British Columbia as a site for analytical comparison between the theory and …
Reinterpretation Of The Mesozoic Thrust Complex Of The Southern Spring Mountains, Nevada, Warren Harding Allen
Reinterpretation Of The Mesozoic Thrust Complex Of The Southern Spring Mountains, Nevada, Warren Harding Allen
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The east verging Keystone thrust fault in the southern Spring Mountains west of Goodsprings, Nevada, is mapped with a sharp bend in its trace near Keystone Wash. This bend was previously explained in the context of out-of-sequence thrusting and a salient-recess relationship along the thrust system; a simple redirection of the Keystone thrust to a north verging thrust. Recent geochronological studies indicate that the east verging Keystone thrust to the north of Keystone Wash formed between 83-103Ma. Approximately 5 kilometers to the east a north verging branch of the fault system overlies rocks as young as 99Ma. At the location …
Total Variation Regularization Of Geodetically And Geologically Constrained Block Models For The Western United States, Eileen L. Evans, John P. Loveless, Brendan J. Meade
Total Variation Regularization Of Geodetically And Geologically Constrained Block Models For The Western United States, Eileen L. Evans, John P. Loveless, Brendan J. Meade
Geosciences: Faculty Publications
Geodetic observations of interseismic deformation in the Western United States provide con- straints on microplate rotations, earthquake cycle processes, and slip partitioning across the Pacific–North America Plate boundary. These measurements may be interpreted using block models, in which the upper crust is divided into microplates bounded by faults that accumulate strain in a first-order approximation of earthquake cycle processes. The number and geometry of microplates are typically defined with boundaries representing a limited subset of the large number of potentially seismogenic faults. An alternative approach is to include a large number of potentially active faults bounding a dense array of …
Developing A Grid-Based Surrogate Reservoir Model Using Artificial Intelligence, Shohreh Amini
Developing A Grid-Based Surrogate Reservoir Model Using Artificial Intelligence, Shohreh Amini
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Reservoir simulation models are the major tools for studying fluid flow behavior in hydrocarbon reservoirs. They are now being used extensively in performing any kind of studies related to fluid production/injection in hydrocarbon bearing formations. Reservoir simulation models are constructed based on geological models, which are developed by integrating data from geology, geophysics, and petro-physics. This data comes from observation, measurements, and interpretations.;Integration of maximum data from geology, geophysics, and petro-physics, contributes to building geologically complex and more realistic models. As the complexity of a reservoir simulation model increases, so does the computation time. Therefore, to perform any comprehensive study …
The Impacts Of Climate, Land Use, Economics, And Conservation Policies On The Hydrology Of The Devils Lake Basin, Gehendra Kharel
The Impacts Of Climate, Land Use, Economics, And Conservation Policies On The Hydrology Of The Devils Lake Basin, Gehendra Kharel
Theses and Dissertations
Devils Lake (DL), a closed-basin lake in northeastern North Dakota of the USA, has risen 10 m since 1991 exhibiting a costly, lengthy and litigious water management wicked problem in the region. With nearly US $1.5 billion already spent in flood mitigation, DL is less than 2 m from its uncontrolled overspill to the nearby Sheyenne River, a tributary of the Red River of the North that connects to Lake Winnipeg in Canada. In this study, three important concerns related to DL water management are being addressed: (1) Are currently implemented outlets capable of mitigating potential risks posed by climate …
Fish Assemblage Structure, Distribution, And Trophic Ecology At Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico Banks, Todd Langland
Fish Assemblage Structure, Distribution, And Trophic Ecology At Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico Banks, Todd Langland
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The northwest Gulf of Mexico (Gulf) shelf-edge banks both provide unique hard bottom habitat and support the northernmost coral reefs on the North American continental shelf in a region that is generally characterized by low relief, soft sediments. The habitat value of many of these banks has led to their designation as Habitat Areas of Particular Concern (HAPC) and the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary (FGBNMS). However, little is known about the fisheries resources and dynamics of the banks outside the FGBNMS. This study had three main objectives: 1) define reef fish assemblages at northwestern Gulf shelf-edge banks and …

Receiver Function Analysis To Study Crustal Structure Of The Northern Nepal And Tibetan Plateau, Mohan Pant
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The teleseismic P-waveform receiver function analysis is a commonly used technique in earthquake seismology to study the crustal structure beneath a broadband seismic station. To understand the structure of the Northern Nepal and Tibetan plateau different studies have used the receiver function method to estimate the Moho depth and Vp/Vs ratio. The value suggested was ~ 30 km in the south and the ~ 75 km in the north. Other studies have used teleseismic body wave data to perform the travel time residuals to model the lithosphere structure. In our study, we analyzed data from 261 seismic stations to establish …

A Geophysical Study Of The Castle Mountain Fault System And Matanuska-Susitna Valley Near Anchorage, Alaska, Shane Michael Schinagel
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The Castle Mountain Fault (CMF) is the closest (~50 km) active fault to Anchorage, Alaska. Located within the Matanuska and Susitna (Matsu) Valleys, the CMF shows repeated, unmistakable evidence for Holocene motion. Recent geologic studies estimate that this fault is capable of producing earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 - 7.1. The Anchorage metropolitan area (which includes the Matsu Valley) contains most of Alaska's population as well as vital shipping and transportation facilities that serve much of inland Alaska. Expected magnitude >7 earthquakes pose seismic hazards to the expanding Anchorage area.
While several mapping and trenching studies have been conducted along the …

The Geologic Implications Of The Factors That Affected Relative Sea-Level Positions In South Carolina During The Pleistocene And The Associated Preserved High-Stand Deposits, William Richardson Doar Iii
The Geologic Implications Of The Factors That Affected Relative Sea-Level Positions In South Carolina During The Pleistocene And The Associated Preserved High-Stand Deposits, William Richardson Doar Iii
Theses and Dissertations
This work utilizes the current understanding of South Carolina geology to provide a stratigraphic review of the late-Pliocene and Pleistocene marine deposits. Almost two centuries of recorded geological study includes geomorphic and stratigraphic units that were described, proposed, revised, abandoned, and revived. Along with the history of the age assignments, changes in geological time scales, and the changes in the understanding of geological concepts, this review is necessary because two concurrent and conflicting stratigraphies exist for late-Pliocene and Pleistocene marine sediments that record multiple sea-level transgressions that were more often destructive than constructive. The result, when tested against existing geological …
Identifying The Vulnerability Of Earthen Levees To Slump Slides Using Geotechnical And Geomorphological Parameters, Sona Sehat
Theses and Dissertations
The main goal of this research is to investigate vulnerability of levees to future slump slides. In the first part, polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) imagery is used as input in an automated classification system for characterizing areas on the levee having anomalies. In addition, a set of in-situ soil data is collected to provide detailed soil properties over the study area. In-situ soil properties of different classes characterized by the classifier are analyzed to determine how similarities between different areas. The second part, a database including of 34 slump slides that occurred in the lower Mississippi River levee system …
The Underlying Current: Climate Change And The Fall Of Rome, Matthew Thomas Finnie
The Underlying Current: Climate Change And The Fall Of Rome, Matthew Thomas Finnie
Honors Program Theses and Research Projects
Although historians have debated the various causes of the fall of the Roman Empire for centuries, scholars did not consider the impact of environmental change until the early twentieth century. Initially, environmental historians believed that agricultural decline resultant from soil erosion and deforestation played a dominant role; however, scientific and historical evidence can now be utilized to demonstrate that these two factors were much less prevalent during the third through fifth centuries than they had been during the prosperous Pax Romana. In contrast, recent climatological studies, most notably dendrochronological sequences, have established that a combination of cooling and desertification plagued …

Structural And Hydrological Controls On The Development Of A River Cave In Marble (Tapagem Cave - Se Brazil), William Sallun Filho, Bruna Medeiros Cordeiro, Ivo Karmann
International Journal of Speleology
Tapagem Cave (or Devil’s Cave) is a river cave developed in the dolomite marble karst of the Serra do André Lopes (State of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil). Although this region is a plateau with significant variation in elevation and a humid subtropical climate, the cave is an anomalous feature in the André Lopes karst because there are few other caves. The marble, which is in a synclinal structure with subjacent phyllites, is a karst aquifer perched above the regional base level (Ribeira River) and has little allogenic recharge. The cave developed on a secondary anticline on the northwest flank of …

Geochemical Tracers Of Holocene Environmental Change Along The East Antarctic Margin, Natalie Romanoff
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Marine sediment geochemistry targeting both organic and inorganic compounds can be used for the reconstruction of paleoenvironmental conditions. Part 1 of this study was a qualitative organic geochemical analysis implemented on sediment cores from the Antarctic Peninsula (AP) and East Antarctic Margin (EAM). Intervals of organic or diatomaceous rich sediment were analyzed by Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectroscopy (Py-GC/MS) with the goal of identifying soft-bodied algae responsible for elevated wt% carbon levels in horizons where diatoms are absent, and identifying the presence of methanogens in basins where cold seeps are likely to be present. The identification of biomarkers in Antarctic sediment was …

Tectonic Studies Of The Atlantic Margin In The Southeastern United States, Andrew C. Pollack
Theses and Dissertations
Reanalysis of published seismic and well data from the South Georgia Embayment provides important new constraints on the geologic structure and evolution of the Eastern North American margin. A lower Paleozoic stratigraphic section (Silurian to Devonian) sampled in offshore wells drilled in the late 1970’s, can be correlated continuously along the entire ~250 km N-S length of the BA-3 profile acquired in 1989. Other than gentle warping and minor fault offsets, this Paleozoic section is essentially undeformed, precluding both Paleozoic contractional deformation associated with Appalachian orogeny, or subsequent Mesozoic extensional deformation and magmatism associated with continental rifting and formation of …

Quaternary Growth History Of Glover's Reef, Belize: Insights Into Reef Distribution, Ecological Change, And Pleistocene Sea Level, Noelle J. Van Ee
Open Access Dissertations
Glover’s Reef is a coral atoll located outside of the Belize Barrier Reef, 30 km from the coast of southern Belize. A single-channel seismic survey of approximately 111 km of grid lines reveals that almost 90% of the surveyed lagoon patch reefs sit on Pleistocene topographic highs. In contrast to previous theories that emphasize the role of karst processes during sea-level low stands in creating topography, records from ten rotary cores into modern reef deposits indicated that the Pleistocene topographic highs are comprised of in situ reef facies: “Reefs sit on reefs”. Although Pleistocene reef deposits formed the template for …

Investigation Of Seismic Activity And Subsurface Structure Under Tectonic And Anthropogenic Settings, Qiong Zhang
Open Access Dissertations
To study interaction of tectonics and earthquakes, we need to address two fundamental questions, Earth's internal structure and the cause of triggered/inhibited seismicity. High-resolution seismic velocity models and analyses of high-precision relocated earthquake have proven to provide useful information from global to regional scale. In areas of active tectonics and/or anthropogenic activities, the stress heterogeneity could largely result from lateral and vertical variation of structure in local scale, which accounts for the non-uniform earthquake distribution. We have mainly conducted two regional studies in Puerto Rico, the plate boundary zone, and the active Coso geothermal field. By inverting for three-dimensional velocity …
