A Preliminary Investigation Into The Use Of An Elemental Analysis In The Correlation Of Sediments From Lake Rudolf, Kenya, Nile E. Luedtke

Open Access Master's Theses

Eighteen elements were determined in several sedimentary strata layers using Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA) and Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS). Proceedures for the trace elemental analysis were developed and applied to both a bulk sample analysis and an analysis of selected size fractions from these samples. Care was exercised in the handling in the handling of samples to minimize contamination and losses associated with trace element analysis.

The strata studied were selected from the plio-pleisocene sediments of Lake Rudolf, Kenya. This region is currently under extensive archeological and paleontological observation. Samples consisted of several sand and clay paleosol units and …

The Settlement And Development Of Wayne County, Utah, To 1900, Aldus Devon Chappell Jan 1975

The Settlement And Development Of Wayne County, Utah, To 1900, Aldus Devon Chappell

Theses and Dissertations

Although John C. Fremont had traveled through Wayne County, Utah, in the winter of 1853-54, it was not until 1874 that the first herd of cattle was introduced to Rabbit Valley. Reports soon circulated that here was a new land, conducive to the raising of livestock, and in 1876 about a dozen families entered the valley and began settlement. Families that moved into this area came from various places. Each settler came to make a new life, and came independently of the others. In 1895 the population was nearly 2,000, and by 1970 it had dropped to 1,486.

Theses and Dissertations

The strata of the proposed Killdeer Formation (Stone, W. J., 1972) in the Killdeer Mountains of Dunn County, North Dakota is composed of a sequence of tuffaceous, calcareous, dolomitized and silicified flat lying sedimentary rocks of Tertiary age. It is the purpose of this report to describe and integrate the petrology and geochemistry of these sediments.

Fieldwork was conducted during the summer of 1972. Forty-three stratigraphic sections were measured and representative samples of each were collected for further analysis. Seven section were selected as representative of the area, and samples from these were studied in thin section with the petrographic …

Stratigraphy Of The Upper Part Of The Fort Union Group In Southwestern Mclean County, North Dakota, Leroy A. Hemish Jan 1975

Stratigraphy Of The Upper Part Of The Fort Union Group In Southwestern Mclean County, North Dakota, Leroy A. Hemish

Theses and Dissertations

Southwestern McLean County is an area characterized by glacial topography and glacially-modified bedrock topography, with limited exposures of bedrock. Outcropping bedrock formations include the Cannonball, Tongue River, and Sentinel Butte Formations, all in the Fort Union Group of Paleocene age.

The Cannonball Formation crops out only in the southeastern part of the area studied (at Washburn), where 18 feet of laminated, gray-brown sandy mudstone is exposed. A yellow-brown, cross-bedded sand unit directly overlies the mudstone. I have tentatively selected the base of this sand unit, which is present in the subsurface throughout southwestern McLean County and reaches thicknesses of more …

The Population Dynamics Of Tanypus Stellatus Coquillett (Diptera: Chironomidae) In Goshen Bay Of Utah Lake, Dennis Kenji Shiozawa

Theses and Dissertations

The population dynamics of Tanypus stellatus in Goshen Bay of Utah Lake was investigated from July 18, 1973, to August 5, 1974. Samples were collected from three stations with an Ekman grab and a K-B corer. The samples were washed in a 110 micron nitex screen and then floated in a sucrose solution. The K-B core was used to determine the vertical distribution of Tanypus stellatus. Ninety-six percent of the Tanypus stellatus larvae are located in the top five centimeters; 99 percent are less than ten centimeters deep. The Ekman grab was used to study the population dynamics of the …

Antelope Island Study: Guidelines For Recreational Land Use Planning For Antelope Island, Utah, Using Computer Techniques, Robert D. Scott Jr. May 1974

Antelope Island Study: Guidelines For Recreational Land Use Planning For Antelope Island, Utah, Using Computer Techniques, Robert D. Scott Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Throughout the history of traditional land use planning, justification for allocating a land use for a particular area has been accomplished generally in a debilitated fashion. For example, decisions have generally been arrived at by (1) political process--incorporating fringe areas into present land use patterns, or (2) short-term revenue producers are given a land use change from a tax base incentive, or (3) revelations implemented, or other subjective justifications. Except in very few instances, data used to base land use planning decisions was not accurately interpreted for adequate input or not even gathered.

Recently, new and innovative methods for land …

A Rock Evaluation Schema For Transporting Planning In Kentucky, C. D. Tockstein, M. W. Palmer May 1974

A Rock Evaluation Schema For Transporting Planning In Kentucky, C. D. Tockstein, M. W. Palmer

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The initial goal was to devise an engineering classification system for intact rock samples based on simple index tests which could be used to categorize Kentucky surface and near-surface rock types and assist Kentucky Department of Transportation personnel in planning for transportation facilities. While conducting the literature survey, several facts become apparent:

  1. a large number of rock classification systems, geologic and technical, general and specific, already existed;
  2. an equally large number of index tests had been devised; and
  3. there was a lack of communication among those involved in specialized areas of rock-related work (geologists, civil engineers, mining engineers, etc.), and, …

A Mineralogical And Geochemical Study Of The Ferruginous Bauxite Deposits In Columbia County, Oregon, And Wahkiakum County, Washington, Ronald Laverne Jackson

Dissertations and Theses

Wet chemical analysis and instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) were performed on a suite of samples from three residual ferruginous bauxite profiles in the study area for abundances of Al2O3,

SiO2, Fe2O3, Ti O2, Na, Sc, Hf, Cr, Co, La, Sm, Yb, Lu, and Th. In addition a mineralogical study accompanied this research, using petrographic, differential thermal, and x-ray diffraction techniques. In each profile, the relative mobility of these elements were calculated by empirical methods for comparison with the parent rock and mineral properties in the saprolite.

Environmental Evaluation Report On The Big Mulberry Creek Basin In Franklin, Madison, Newton, Johnson And Crawford Counties, Arkansas, Edward E. Dale Jr. Jan 1974

Environmental Evaluation Report On The Big Mulberry Creek Basin In Franklin, Madison, Newton, Johnson And Crawford Counties, Arkansas, Edward E. Dale Jr.

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

The environmental evaluation report which follows is based on information supplied by the Corps of Engineers, Little Rock District, available literature, field observations made during the summer of 1972, and results of research now in progress on natural features of the Big Mulberry Basin. Since most major dams, levees, and flood retarding structures now in existence in the Ozarks have been constructed since about 1940, opportunities to make long term studies of their effects have been limited. Also, the natural vegetation, fauna, and archeology of the Big Mulberry Basin have not been extensively investigated, but available sources provide enough information …

Geology And Structure Of The Serra Do Mar In Eastern São Paulo, Brazil, Peter Rideg

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Detailed geologic mapping in the Serra do Mar region of eastern São Paulo, Brazil, enables the definition of two northeasterly trending Precambrian lithologic complexes in heretofore undifferentiated crystalline complex rocks. These two complexes are the Suzano Complex and the Itatinga Complex, separated one from the other by the large Cubatão fault zone.

The Suzano Complex is divided into three formations: the Oropó schist, the Iupeba gneiss, and the Paranapiacaba gneiss. The Itatinga Complex is divided into four formations: the Biritiba-Mirim migmatite, the Jurubatuba migmatite, the Itapanhaú gneiss, and the Guarujá migmatite. Numerous late and post-tectonic granitic bodies occur intrusive into …
