Biological and Biomedical Sciences Department Faculty Journal Articles

Humans emerged across Africa shortly before 300 thousand years ago (ka)1,2,3. Although this pan-African evolutionary process implicates diverse environments in the human story, the role of tropical forests remains poorly understood. Here we report a clear association between late Middle Pleistocene material culture and a wet tropical forest in southern Côte d’Ivoire, a region of present-day rainforest. Twinned optically stimulated luminescence and electron spin resonance dating methods constrain the onset of human occupations at Bété I to around 150 ka, linking them with Homo sapiens. Plant wax biomarker, stable isotope, phytolith and pollen …

Deep Core Advocacy Coalitions, Christopher M. Weible, Anna M. Crawford, Allegra H. Fullerton, Kayla M. Gabehart, Katherine E. Imhoff, Giulia Mariani

Michigan Tech Publications

As one of the most established theoretical approaches to public policy, the Advocacy Coalition Framework (ACF) has moored most of its theoretical arguments around a textbook policy conflict consisting of two or more advocacy coalitions in a mature adversarial policy subsystem within an advanced polyarchy. This article steps beyond the textbook by introducing deep core coalitions marked by compounding intersectional identities operating at the macro-system. It offers two illustrations of deep core coalitions, one bound by their collective transgender identity and the other by their collective traditionalist identity. Finally, this article concludes with a discussion of what it means for …

Accelerating Earlier Access To Anti-Tnf-Α Agents With Biosimilar Medicines In The Management Of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Gionata Fiorino, Ashwin Ananthakrishnan, Russell D Cohen, Raymond K Cross, Parakkal Deepak, Francis A Farraye, Jonas Halfvarson, A Hillary Steinhart

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Data indicate that earlier initiation of anti-tumor necrosis factor alpha (anti-TNF-α) biologic medicines may prevent progression to irreversible bowel damage and improve outcomes for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), particularly Crohn's disease. However, the high cost of such therapies may restrict access and prevent timely treatment of IBD. Biosimilar anti-TNF-α medicines may represent a valuable opportunity for cost savings and optimized patient outcomes by improving access to advanced therapies and allowing earlier anti-TNF-α treatment initiation. Biosimilar anti-TNF-α medicines have been shown to offer consistent therapeutic outcomes to their reference medicines, yet despite entering the IBD treatment armamentarium over 10 …

Glacio-Dynamic Variations In Central New York Drumlins: A Morphometric Analysis, Mark Francek, Roger Blish Feb 2025

Glacio-Dynamic Variations In Central New York Drumlins: A Morphometric Analysis, Mark Francek, Roger Blish

The Geographical Bulletin

Varying rates of till deformation as a function of surface topography and direction of continental ice advance are linked to pattern and form variations in drumlins. Five transects are examined morphometrically . Transects are selected on the basis of their slope and direction of ice advance. A hypothesis based on variable rates of clast lodgement and till deformation accounts for most of drumlins' spatial characteristics. The Cayuga Trough funnelled most of the ice southward and the large amounts of till mobilized contribute to high drumlin densities. The observed increase in drumlin elongation is linked to local ice surging. Away from …

The Creation Of A Digital Cartographic Data Base For Locator Maps, Karen R. Mulcahy Feb 2025

The Creation Of A Digital Cartographic Data Base For Locator Maps, Karen R. Mulcahy

The Geographical Bulletin

This paper reports on the procedures and problems associated with the development of a digital cartographic data base for the creation of small scale, small size locator maps. These locator maps are used as inserts to accompany thematic and planimetric maps. They are generally very simple outlines of coastlines or political boundaries, but may also contain boxed or shaded areas, graticules, and occasionally, thematic content. Several cartographic data sets were evaluated and three were chosen for use to cover a map scale range of 1 :800 million to 1: 30 million. The data sets were then reviewed and edited. Finally, …

Support For The United States In The United Nations On Cold War Issues And The Distribution Of Foreign Aid To Central American And Caribbean Countries, Gerald R. Webster Feb 2025

Support For The United States In The United Nations On Cold War Issues And The Distribution Of Foreign Aid To Central American And Caribbean Countries, Gerald R. Webster

The Geographical Bulletin

The agenda of the General Assembly of the United Nations has been dominated by Cold War battles between the United States and the Soviet Union during much of the organization's 45-year history. Do countries who support the United States on votes associated with the Cold War receive larger quantities of U.S. foreign assistance? This paper examines two hypotheses pertaining to this question with regard to the voting behavior of 12 Central American and Caribbean countries between 1970 and 1987. The cross-sectional analysis finds significant evidence for a link between U.N. voting behavior and the quantities of per capita U.S. foreign …

The Use Of Dendrogeomorphic Techniques To Date A Beaverdam Outburst Flood In Oglethorpe County, Georgia, Katherine A. Schipke, David R. Butler Feb 2025

The Use Of Dendrogeomorphic Techniques To Date A Beaverdam Outburst Flood In Oglethorpe County, Georgia, Katherine A. Schipke, David R. Butler

The Geographical Bulletin

An outburst flood from a failed beaver dam occurred in September, 1987, in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. The flood event tilted, scarred, and traumatized trees along the banks of Millstone Creek. Dendrogeomorphological techniques were employed to verify that the flood event was recorded in the annual rings of these trees, and to produce an index cutoff value for ring responses. Because of its recency, a very high number of sampled tree-rings recorded the flood; however, older floods are less likely to be so strongly recorded in the sampled trees, diminishing the usefulness of the index value concept. An alternative approach used …

The Geographical Bulletin

The field of Geography has experienced much change during my professional career, which I date from my arrival to teach at the University of Arkansas in September, 1946 (I retired in May, 1990). My geographical education was under seasoned, mature geographers who had taught several years and were themselves the product of early 20th century geographers. I chose the field because I liked the subject, not be - cause of job opportunities, and because of the perspect

Hydrogeological Sensitivity Of Transportation Routes In Hazardous Waste Disposal Facilities Siting, David A. Padgett Feb 2025

Hydrogeological Sensitivity Of Transportation Routes In Hazardous Waste Disposal Facilities Siting, David A. Padgett

The Geographical Bulletin

An analysis of federal rules for siting hazardous waste treatment, storage, and disposal facilities (TSDFs) reveals that minimal consideration is directed towards the potential for groundwater pollution during transport. Hazardous substances are being introduced to groundwater annually from spills during shipping. Federal regulations do include stringent aquifer protection measures for the immediate facilities' sites; however, little attention has been paid to the hydrogeological sensitivity of the highway and railway corridors. This project raises the policy question of possibly including the hydrogeological sensitivity of transport routes as decision-making criteria for location of proposed TSDFs. An examination of current regulations and a …

The 1987-88 Drought In Selected North-Central United States: The Dimensions Of Precipitation Deficiency, Rafique Ahmed

The Geographical Bulletin

The north-central United States, namely Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin, experienced a severe drought during 1987-88 crop year. Monthly precipitation data of the crop year (September through August) were analyzed for 58 stations over the period 1964-65 through 1987-88 to quantify the intensity and extent of this drought. With the exception of a narrow strip in northern Minnesota the entire study area was affected by this drought. More than 92 percent of the stations experienced seven to eleven months of precipitation deficiency during this drought. Approximately 50 percent of the study area experienced precipitation deficiency of over 30 percent. South-central Iowa …

The Centennial Farm Program In Michigan, Susan Tosick Storwick, Robert M. Ward, Linda Young Feb 2025

The Centennial Farm Program In Michigan, Susan Tosick Storwick, Robert M. Ward, Linda Young

The Geographical Bulletin

Some 4,500 centennial farms were documented in Michigan at the end of the 1980 decade. Qualifications for centennial farm status are somewhat subjectively interpreted. However, the most important criterion is based on families and descendants occupying farms for 100 years or more. Some farms are being decertified when the continuous ownership is broken by sale of the property. The necessity to sell is attributed in part to declining farm revenue, aging farmers who lack heirs and urban land pressure. Before termination from the program, some farmers have sold small parcels of their land, hired fa rm labor, or switched to …

The Abandoned Shipwreck Act Of 1987 And The Reaction Of State Historic Preservation Offices, Kelly A. Victor, Gary M. Victor

The Geographical Bulletin

The Abandoned Shipwreck Act of 1987 is perhaps the most important piece of recent federal legislation enacted affecting underwater archaeology and the preservation of underwater historic sites. With this short statute, the federal government vested title to virtually all historic shipwrecks in navigable water to the states. The act also changed existing legal principles in order to allow the states to enact their own laws to protect and preserve underwater historic resources. This article begins with a discussion of the Abandoned Shipreck Act of 1987- what it is, what it does and how it has changed the law related to …

Projections And Perceptions-Editoral Comments. The Changing Human Impact, Andrew Goudie Feb 2025

Projections And Perceptions-Editoral Comments. The Changing Human Impact, Andrew Goudie

The Geographical Bulletin

In recent decades the power of humans to modify the landscape has been transformed by the achievements of humans in increasing their numbers, the increase in individual affluence and consumption in western societies, and the application of new technologies. During the twentieth century the human population of the planet has exploded. It was not until the time of George Perkins Marsh, author of that great landmark work on conservation Man and Nature (1864), that the world's population reached 1000 million-a process that had taken about 3 million years. However, by 1930 it had doubled yet again to 2000 million, by …

Monitoring And Modeling Legacy Tree Response To Restoration Treatments In The Klamath Mountains, Oregon, Usa, Isaac Joseph Ball Feb 2025

Monitoring And Modeling Legacy Tree Response To Restoration Treatments In The Klamath Mountains, Oregon, Usa, Isaac Joseph Ball

Dissertations and Theses

Climate change and its disruption of historical drought and wildfire patterns pose a substantial threat to forest health in the western United States. This threat is compounded by past management practices like fire suppression. The largest, oldest, and most ecologically valuable trees are particularly vulnerable, making their conservation a key objective of climate-adaptive forest management. Restoration treatments such as mechanical thinning have been shown to enhance tree growth and drought resilience in dry conifer forests, but long-term monitoring is necessary to understand their sustained effects. This study used dendroecological tree-ring analysis to investigate the effects of thinning on the growth, …

The Effects Of Transportation Distribution On The Performance Of Insulated Thermal Containers, Edmund B. Tang Feb 2025

The Effects Of Transportation Distribution On The Performance Of Insulated Thermal Containers, Edmund B. Tang

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

This research examines the effect of simulated transportation distribution testing on insulated thermal containers, also known as cold chain shippers. This study compares the thermal performance of an insulated thermal container in its ideal pristine condition with no external factors that challenge the integrity of the package to insulated thermal containers that are subjected to common and acceptable test inputs using established and accepted industry package performance and simulation standards. Currently, little research evaluates the thermal performance of insulated thermal containers after simulated distribution testing. A total of nine different real-world scenarios using test standards of varying severities or other …
