The Geography Of Mining And Its Environmental Impact In Europe, Andrea Bastianin, Chiara F. Del Bo, Ahmad Luqman Shamsudin Mar 2025

The Geography Of Mining And Its Environmental Impact In Europe, Andrea Bastianin, Chiara F. Del Bo, Ahmad Luqman Shamsudin

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We map the mining sector in Europe, with a focus on Energy Transition Metals (ETMs), and present an in-depth analysis of the environmental impact and associated monetary costs, at the regional level, of extraction activities. We aim to offer a spatially disaggregated view of the current mining projects and associated environmental costs in terms of CO2 emissions and their monetary value. To do this, we collected global warming potential (GWP) data from Life Cycle Assessment Impact Analysis (LCIA) and linked these to their expected monetary value. By considering the full spectrum of sourced ETMs, we map the environmental, physical, and …

Justice On The Home Front: Domestic Prosecution Of Foreign Combatants During Wartime, Katherine K. French

Duke Law Journal

Russia's 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine produced a shock to the world order. The conflict has led to immense suffering for the Ukrainian people, many of whom have fled their homes or are directly involved in the fighting. In some instances, the use of improper tactics by both sides exacerbates the devastation, even amounting to war crimes. Although the war rages on, justice efforts have already begun. International tribunals and foreign countries’ domestic courts have initiated investigations into alleged violations of international law and prosecutions of the perpetrators. The most significant effort, though, has been within Ukraine’s own courts. These …

“Time Is Our Only Ally!”: Indigenous Heroism And Native Slipstream In Turok, Son Of Stone, Justin Wigard

Heroism Science

In this article, I draw on Frederick Luis Aldama’s framework of Graphic Indigeneity to revisit the long history of an Indigenous hero figure in comics: Turok, a pre-Columbian Mandan warrior lost in a prehistoric space known as the Lost Valley. First appearing in Dell’s Four Color Comics #596 (1954), Turok has appeared throughout comics history for nearly 70 years, primarily written and drawn by white creative teams, yet a visually, narratively prominent Indigenous hero in the comics page, one who has periodically been a top-selling popular character in the comics industry. To this end, I argue that Turok is a …

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

As high-frequency sensor networks increasingly enhance data-driven models of water quality, process-based models like the U.S. National Water Model (NWM) are generating accessible forecasts of streamflow at increasingly dense scales. There is now an opportunity to combine these products to construct actionable water quality forecasts. To that end, we couple streamflow forecasts from the NWM to a gradient-boosted decision tree algorithm (LightGBM) trained on 5+ years of high-frequency monitoring data to forecast in-stream turbidity levels in the Catskill Mountains, NY, USA. Results indicate LightGBM models are capable of relatively skillful predictions, which enable robust forecasts for 1–3 days lead times. …

Cost Comparison Of Congregate, Motel, And Village-Type Shelters For People Experiencing Homelessness, Jacen Greene, Todd Ferry, Emily Leickly, Franklin H. Spurbeck Mar 2025

Cost Comparison Of Congregate, Motel, And Village-Type Shelters For People Experiencing Homelessness, Jacen Greene, Todd Ferry, Emily Leickly, Franklin H. Spurbeck

Homelessness Research & Action Collaborative Publications and Presentations

Village and motel shelters exemplify the expanding field of “alternative” shelters for people experiencing homelessness, largely defined in contrast to “traditional” congregate shelters. Little research compares the financial costs of alternative and traditional shelter models. The research team analyzed cost data for 13 alternative shelters (six villages and seven motel shelters) and nine traditional congregate shelters in Portland, Oregon. Costs were assessed per “unit” (i.e. shelter bed or motel room) to account for differences in shelter sizes. Village shelters had the highest per-unit set-up costs ($99,630), followed by motel shelters ($88,462), while congregate shelters had the lowest ($43,692). Congregate shelters …

Negotiating Home In The Long Poem: Amatoritsero Ede’S Transpatiality, Mathias Iroro Orhero Mar 2025

Negotiating Home In The Long Poem: Amatoritsero Ede’S Transpatiality, Mathias Iroro Orhero

Faculty Publications

In this paper, I argue that Amatoritsero Ede uses the long poem to negotiate the idea of home in an African diasporic context. As a form that carries the implications of length, time, and space, the long poem has been used by poets to interrogate the way we structure the world and to deconstruct grand narratives. The figure of the Black immigrant is one that destabilizes grand narratives of nationalism. This makes the form important in its capacity to ask important questions about nation and tradition even as it transgresses them. As a writer from the Niger Delta, a marginal …

Robust projections and predictions of climate variability and change, particularly at regional scales, rely on the driving processes being represented with fidelity in model simulations. Consequently, the role of enhanced horizontal resolution in improved process representation in all components of the climate system continues to be of great interest. Recent simulations suggest the possibility of significant changes in both large-scale aspects of the ocean and atmospheric circulations and in the regional responses to climate change, as well as improvements in representations of small-scale processes and extremes, when resolution is enhanced. The first phase of the High-Resolution Model Intercomparison Project (HighResMIP1) …

Estimating The Energy Recovery Potential From Municipal Solid Waste In Ha’Il Region (Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia), Noureddine Elboughdiri, Muhammad Imran Khan, Takwa Missaoui

Yanbu Journal of Engineering and Science

In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), the need of an agile solid waste management (SWM) system is vital to control safely the rapid growth of its municipal solid waste (MSW) with minimal environment toll. Further, the domestic energy production in KSA is thriving and putting a tremendous pressure on its reserves of fossil oil. Waste-to-energy (WTE) plants provides an excellent opportunity, even if MSW mitigation and energy production are usually considered separately. Energy recovery (ER) from waste is not a new field of study; however, its implementation remains a challenge in KSA. Although there is abundance of useful waste …
