Bridging Sky And Sea: Joint Strategies For Medical Evacuation In The Indo-Pacific, Mahdi Al-Husseini, Samuel J. Diehl, Samuel L. Fricks
The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
This article contends that the US Army should coordinate agile and expeditious Joint medical evacuation operations in the Indo-Pacific and develop novel capabilities to do so effectively. There has been limited discussion among scholars and practitioners on modern maritime medical evacuation tactics and techniques inspired by history and informed by contemporary threats. This article introduces three new medical evacuation capabilities and makes six recommendations to advance a Joint maritime medical evacuation operating concept. It provides a framework for medical planners developing evacuation systems in maritime theaters and justifies how and why the US Army should play a substantial role in …

(1) Background: Lung cancer is the deadliest and second most prevalent cancer in Pennsylvania (PA), and African American patients are disproportionately affected. Lung cancer morbidity and mortality in Philadelphia County are among the highest in PA. Geographic information systems (GIS) are useful to explore geospatial variations in the cancer burden and risk factors. Therefore, we used GIS to analyze the lung cancer burden in Philadelphia to assess which areas of the city have the highest morbidity and mortality, identify potential clusters, and determine which census tract-level characteristics were associated with higher tract-level cancer burden. (2) Methods: Using secondary data from …

Introduction: Childhood malnutrition remains a risk factor for morbidity and mortality. Children admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) are at a higher risk of worsening nutritional status with adverse clinical outcomes. The burden of malnutrition is strongly linked to various well-defined social determinants of health, including race, socioeconomic status, and geography, as these factors influence household food insecurity. This study aimed to analyze the interrelationships of nutritional status, social determinants of health, and health outcomes in critically ill children.
Methods: Retrospective cohort study of 6418 critically ill children admitted to PICU from January 2014 to December 2017. Demographic …
The Bionics Bus For Neurology And Neuropsychiatry: Concept Development And Validation, Rohit Shankar
The Bionics Bus For Neurology And Neuropsychiatry: Concept Development And Validation, Rohit Shankar
Peninsula Medical School
Healthcare delivery in the United Kingdom is increasingly becoming a challenging issue where demand is regularly outstripping availability. This is particularly a challenge in neurology and neuropsychiatry, where delays in diagnosis and treatment are leading to worse health and social outcomes. The Darzi report, which focused on three key tenants, has been hailed as the future blueprint for National Health Service (NHS) sustainability and high-quality care delivery. These three tenants are moving from analogue to digital approaches, focusing on prevention and wellbeing, and supporting diagnosis and treatment in communities instead of hospitals. Technological interventions are relevant at all stages of …

Philosophy, Power, And Morality: Towards A Better Haiti By Forging And Wielding Biblical Moral Sword, Cedrick Albert Saint-Elien
Helms School of Government Spring Public Policy Conference
21st century Haiti, it is the worst of times, an age of foolishness, an epoch of incredulity, a season of darkness, a dry season of despair, and a century of contaminated moral atmosphere. This gradation explains the rationale behind the self-exile of a great number of Haitians to other countries where life is not as invaluable as it is in the poorest country of Central America. This paper is an attempt to mainly pose solutions to the problems of impunity, unauthorized power, and transparent corruption. How does a nation go up after hitting rock bottom repeatedly? Does a “failed …

A More Perfect Disunion: Warning Signs Of Revolution And Regime Collapse, Elena Mccloy
Helms School of Government Spring Public Policy Conference
In the 14th Century, the late European Latin lexicon had a new word to describe the cyclical nature in which regimes found themselves moving from periods of prosperity to periods of discontent, with each revolution fueled by the belief that radical change was necessary for survival. History rewards us with the opportunity to examine each cycle of revolution for distinct patterns of recurrence, so that we may be better prepared for the next stages of change. This paper outlines the most common trends indicating political upheaval, studying current and historical examples from The United States, the Middle East, and …

Climate Change And Galamsey In Northern Ghana: Security Implications For The Sahel, Deborah Mawusi Ameh
Helms School of Government Spring Public Policy Conference
The impact of both climate change and galamsey (illegal small-scale mining) on the Ghanaian economy is manifold ranging from personal to state insecurity. Sharing a border with the Sahel and its associated problems regarding state capacity and instability, this paper sought to understand how the twin internal issues (climate change and galamsey) within the northern part of Ghana would impact the already unstable Sahelian region. Using the Human Needs Theory (HNT), and a qualitative approach of rigorous content analysis, this paper was able to understand the push factors accounting for the overindulgence in galamsey such as economic distress and lack …

This study investigates researcher variability in computational reproduction, an activity for which it is least expected. Eighty-five independent teams attempted numerical replication of results from an original study of policy preferences and immigration. Reproduction teams were randomly grouped into a ‘transparent group’ receiving original study and code or ‘opaque group’ receiving only a method and results description and no code. The transparent group mostly verified original results (95.7% same sign and p-value cutoff), while the opaque group had less success (89.3%). Second-decimal place exact numerical reproductions were less common (76.9 and 48.1%). Qualitative investigation of the workflows revealed many …

Legacy Of Freedom: Then And Now, Glenn Bass
Helms School of Government Spring Public Policy Conference
The purpose of this paper is to provide the reader with an understanding of the United States of America freedoms and resonates from the values that Liberty University instills in their students. There has been a long journey towards the freedoms that we have today through the United States of America founding principles that must be protected. This protection gives meaning to life, family, speech, constitutional protections, the Church, and sanctity of life. All but some of these principles are under attack, calling for an introspective view of how to properly deal with such protections and the development of God-given …

Data-Driven Fusion Of Earth Observation And Hydrologic Data To Forecast Flood Extents At Regional To Continental Scales, Kel N. Markert
Theses and Dissertations
Accurate and timely flood inundation forecasts are crucial for mitigating the devastating impacts of floods, which affect 1.47 billion people globally and cause significant economic losses. While traditional flood forecasting methods, such as hydrologic and hydrodynamic models, have limitations in providing comprehensive and spatially explicit inundation information, recent research has focused on leveraging Earth observation data and machine learning for enhanced flood prediction. This dissertation advances the state-of-the-art in data-driven flood inundation forecasting by exploring the capabilities and scalability of the Forecasting Inundation Extents using Rotated Empirical Orthogonal Function (FIER) framework. This dissertation focuses on investigating different aspects of FIER …

College of Computing and Digital Media Dissertations
Sk8r Skull is a single player video game where players must traverse the environment as a skull on a skateboard, in an effort to defeat the wizard who has stolen the rest of the skull’s body. Players must move, destroy, and grind their way through the level in order to reach the wizard. By traversing the area, players will learn the mechanics of the game, as well as some of the in-game world’s backstory. The production of Sk8r Skull was driven by examining game feel, and the “flow” state.
Exploring The Experiences Of Women In Guyana's Male-Dominated Transport And Logistics Industry, Jennifer Prashad
Exploring The Experiences Of Women In Guyana's Male-Dominated Transport And Logistics Industry, Jennifer Prashad
JWU Dissertations & Theses
The pursuit of gender equality in the Caribbean and Latin America is a significant issue, as indicated by the 2022 Global Gender Disparity Report, which projects that, at its current pace, it will require 132 years to eliminate gender inequality globally. Given the historical male dominance in the transport and logistics sector, the purpose of this study was to explore Guyanese women's experiences in this male-dominated industry (Ng & Acker, 2020). Incorporated into this research was Eagly's (1978) Social Role Theory to analyze how societal roles and physical distinctions influence gender inequalities and the entrenched norms that shape women's roles. …

This article explores the underutilized potential of incorporating gamified approaches into anatomy outreach initiatives. While gamification and game-based learning approaches have been widely adopted in formal educational settings, there is a surprising lack of research on their application for community-based public engagement with anatomy. We emphasize the importance of involving community partners from the outset to co-design gamified outreach activities. A collaborative approach tailors the final products to the needs, preferences, and resources of the target audiences. By actively involving end users, co-design fosters a sense of ownership, relevance, and long-term sustainability for the educational resources. This article also presents …

Northern Red-Legged Frog Use Of A New Under-Road Crossing And Adjacent Upland Habitat, Alyson W. Yates, Catherine De Rivera
Northern Red-Legged Frog Use Of A New Under-Road Crossing And Adjacent Upland Habitat, Alyson W. Yates, Catherine De Rivera
Urban Ecosystem Research Consortium of Portland/Vancouver
A population of northern red-legged frogs (Rana aurora) located in northwest Portland must make a perilous crossing over U.S. Hwy 30 to access their breeding habitat in the floodplain of the Willamette River. To address the significant frog mortality that has historically resulted from this seasonal crossing, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife managed the installation of an under-road crossing structure, completed in October 2024. To date, no studies have documented the effectiveness of crossing structures installed for R. aurora use, and few studies have examined their effectiveness for amphibians after installation. To meet these needs, our research will …
Financial Metrics As Predictors Of Financial Vulnerability And Nonprofit Failure, Yossi Haimberg
Financial Metrics As Predictors Of Financial Vulnerability And Nonprofit Failure, Yossi Haimberg
Dissertations and Theses
Studying nonprofit's risk factors for financial vulnerability and possible demise is important because of the negative social consequences for both the failed organization and its stockholders. Financial vulnerability is a concern shared by all nonprofit's stakeholders as poor financial health affects nonprofit's ability to fulfill its mission, sustain its operations, and in many cases may result in a nonprofit demise. Advance knowledge on financial vulnerability has significant implications for nonprofit's leaders to develop corrective strategies to prevent failure.
Nonprofit scholars such as Tuckman and Chang, Greenlee, Hager, and Searing have contributed notable benchmarks in the field of nonprofit vulnerability, by …

Urban Beavers At The Crossroads: How Ecological Knowledge, Sociodemographic, And Spatial Context Shape Public Perception And Coexistence Preferences, Matthew Guziejka
Dissertations and Theses
Urban beavers demonstrate synurbization by adapting to urban environments, offering ecological benefits such as biodiversity enhancement and flood mitigation, while also occasionally conflicting with infrastructure. This study examines how ecological knowledge, sociodemographics, and spatial context influence public perceptions and management preferences for urban beavers in the Tualatin River watershed, Oregon.
A voluntary survey of 176 participants from peri-urban areas assessed demographic characteristics, ecological knowledge, and attitudes toward management approaches. Spatial factors, such as proximity to watercourses and green spaces, were also analyzed. Logistic regression analyses were used to explore relationships between these factors and management preferences. Political orientation was significantly …

The coronavirus pandemic shaped challenges for marginalized groups. Specifically, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer (LGBTQ+) people experienced community-building constraints, notably in predominantly rural regions. People are also navigating digital geographies, or online social environments, in novel ways to develop virtual communities in the face of prejudice, discrimination, and potential trauma. Through a minority coping approach, the present study explored LGBTQ+ people’s experiences navigating the dynamics of digital geographies during the pandemic while residing in socially conservative, highly rural physical spaces where they may be exposed to vicarious trauma. Using qualitative semi-structured interviews, data were gathered from 43 LGBTQ+ identifying …
