Land Use Related Adjustments To Aquifer Depletion In Southwestern Kansas, M. Duane Nellis Mar 2025

Land Use Related Adjustments To Aquifer Depletion In Southwestern Kansas, M. Duane Nellis

The Geographical Bulletin

From prairie to wheat field, the historical transformation of the Kansas landscape has been dramatic. The contributions to this transformation have been based on many factors including new grain varieties, irrigation technology, and other resource converting-space adjusting techniques. In Western Kansas in particular, with inadequate precipitation (14 to 16 inches average from AprilSeptember) for high yield intensive cropland agriculture, the structure of land transformation has been strongly influenced by the availability of water for irrigation. Since surface sources are negligible, groundwater from the Ogallala Aquifer is the critical source for irrigation water. With the dramatic increase in land area irrigated …

New Opportunities In Historical Geography: Guest Editorial, Marshall Mclennan Mar 2025

New Opportunities In Historical Geography: Guest Editorial, Marshall Mclennan

The Geographical Bulletin

Traditionally universities and colleges have served as the employer of opportunity for aspiring geographers. The "baby boom generation" has graduated from the nation's universities, however, and its offspring won't make a significant numerical impact upon the hallowed halls of higher academia until late in the next decade. Demographics have dictated a contraction of the traditional employment market, and it behooves today's geography students to seek other outlets for useful application of the geographer's set of expertises. Alternative employment opportunities have proven particularly hard to come by for aspiring cultural and historical geographers. Consequently, the Department of Geography & Geology at …

An Historical Perspective Of The Growth And Development Of Canada's Petroleum Industry: 1946-1970, Elwood J. C. Kureth

The Geographical Bulletin

Prior to 1947, 85% of Canada's crude oil requirements were met by importing oil from foreign sources. Most of this oil came from the United States and Venezuela. The oil from the United States entered Canada by means of pipe lines to the Sarnia and Montreal areas while that shipped into the prairie provinces arrived by railroad tank car. Canada's coastal refineries, in the Maritimes and in British Columbia, received their oil by way of tankers. In all, domestic oil production in Canada in 1946 amounted to only 21,000 barrels per day, while imports exceeded 200,000 barrels per day.' This …

Mental Maps Of Language Distribution In Rio Grande Do Sui (Brazil), Denni R. Preston Mar 2025

Mental Maps Of Language Distribution In Rio Grande Do Sui (Brazil), Denni R. Preston

The Geographical Bulletin

Preston, 1982 used informant-drawn maps to show young, well-educated Hawaiians' perceptions of language differences in the United States. Figure 4 displays one informant's response to the request to outline and label areas where people " speak differently." Figure 5 shows the technique (similar to the "bundling of isoglosses" in traditional dialect geography) which permits a composite (Figure 6) to be created.

The Nowruz Oil Spill In The Arabian Gulf: Case Study Of Saudi Arabia, Abdullah S. Ai-Amirah Mar 2025

The Nowruz Oil Spill In The Arabian Gulf: Case Study Of Saudi Arabia, Abdullah S. Ai-Amirah

The Geographical Bulletin

The Arabian Gulf has suffered from hundreds of oil spills, some of them reported but most unreported. In many cases the amounts of the spills and their causes are usually undetermined. During 1978-1979, tanker captains reported to the Japan Oceanographic Data Center about 412 oil slicks in the Gulf and its approaches.' Table 1 shows major oil spills exceeding 3,000 barrels which occurred between August, 1980, and August, 1982. Although these are relatively current, it should be noted that other significant oil spills have occurred since oil was discovered in the region by Iran in 1908.

Landslides Along The Lewis Overthrust Fault, Glacier National Park, Montana, Jack G. Oelfke, David R. Butler Mar 2025

Landslides Along The Lewis Overthrust Fault, Glacier National Park, Montana, Jack G. Oelfke, David R. Butler

The Geographical Bulletin

As development in the mountainous areas of the western United States continues to accelerate, the exposure of humans and structures to natural hazard threats from high-magnitude masswasting events also increases. This encroachment into previously uninhabited, undeveloped mountain areas creates situations whereby mass-wasting events now pose threats to human activity. Glacier National Park, Montana, is one such location where the potential exists for high-magnitude mass-wasting events. The mountains in this area commonly have steep slopes, high relief, and weathered bedrock features. These features, combined with a mid-latitude climate conducive to extensive frostweathering action, have resulted in a landscape possessing many slope …

Editorial Comments, Robert M. Ward

The Geographical Bulletin

The message in this issue is directed to my teaching colleagues, but it is also appropriate for the student body. My topic pertains to enrichment and overall maturity of our students beyond the subject matter in our geographic specialities. From a student perspective the contents of this editorial applies to those majoring in any educational pursuit. Specifically I am concerned about the development of writing and oratory skills, as well as personal and character growth. This is predicated on the assumption that college graduates should be expected to attain some level of leadership and consequently should have mastered the knowledge, …

The International Law Of Maritime Boundary Delimitation, Edward Collins Jr., Martin A. Rogoff Mar 2025

The International Law Of Maritime Boundary Delimitation, Edward Collins Jr., Martin A. Rogoff

Maine Law Review

The law of the sea, in its essence, divides the seas into zones and specifies the rights and duties of states and ships flying their flags in those zones. Now that states are claiming extensive seaward jurisdiction both on the continental shelf and in the water column, attention has begun to shift from delimiting continental shelf boundaries or economic zone boundaries to the delimitation of a single maritime boundary which would serve both purposes. There are significant legal differences between the delimitation of a single maritime boundary and the delimitation of either a continental shelf boundary or an exclusive economic …

Additionality Of Solar Tax Incentives Under Community Choice Aggregation In Ohio, Michael L. Smith, Carson Reeling, Michael D. Wilcox Mar 2025

Additionality Of Solar Tax Incentives Under Community Choice Aggregation In Ohio, Michael L. Smith, Carson Reeling, Michael D. Wilcox

Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications

In the State of Ohio, the electric regulatory landscape permits local governments to become energy suppliers to residents and small businesses through community choice aggregation (CCA). Some CCAs provide enrollees 100% renewable electricity. Concurrently, the federal government offers an income tax credit (ITC) for the purchase of a solar array. With policy incentives, it is important to ensure they encourage behavior beyond the baseline scenario without the ITC. This is known as “additionality.” Renewable aggregation programs may crowd out the benefits of the ITC, violating additionality. This paper assesses additionality of the ITC in the context of Ohio’s CCA programs. …

Formation Of New Ethnic Towns In Japan And Its Effect On The Local Economy: A Case Study Of Nishi-Kawaguchi Chinatown, Hiroya Takamatsu

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

This study examines the formation of Nishi-Kawaguchi Chinatown, a new, socially accepted neighborhood in the suburbs of a greater metropolitan area in Japan, with a growing settlement of foreign residents. The study highlights factors leading to the formation of ethnic towns in Japan’s regional communities and their social and economic impact by addressing three research questions: What factors led to Chinese immigrants settling in Nishi-Kawaguchi? Why are there so many Chinese restaurants in Nishi-Kawaguchi? How did the formation of Nishi-Kawaguchi Chinatown impact the local economy? An interview survey of restaurant owners in Nishi-Kawaguchi Chinatown was conducted, and the resultant data …

Cabin Crew Leadership Styles During Covid-19: A Case Of Thailand, Phobphison Phob-Udom, Thanavutd Chutiphongdech, Teepakorn Kampitak

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted the airline industry, causing a sharp decline in international air travel. To survive, airlines quickly adopted cost-cutting strategies, including human resource retrenchments. These job losses created widespread job insecurity, leading to negative consequences such as depression, lower motivation, job dissatisfaction, and a decline in overall productivity among cabin crews. During a crisis, leadership becomes a strategic tool for maintaining employee performance, as leadership styles play a key role in reducing job stress and anxiety among subordinates. Although studies on crisis leadership in tourism and hospitality are somewhat prevalent, little attention has been paid to the …

Journal of Academic Ophthalmology

Purpose: To determine residency program directors’ (PD) perceptions of the ophthalmology match process, particularly regarding their opinions on a potential "application cap" that would limit the number of programs to which an applicant can apply. Methods: An Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology (AUPO)-endorsed survey targeted U.S. PDs from the 2021 and 2022 cycles. A survey was initially distributed on 02/14/2023 with a single email reminder approximately 3 months later. All responses were anonymous and collected via a secure Qualtrics link. Results: Of the 45/121 PD respondents (37.2% response rate), 88.9% supported an application cap and suggested a median of …

An International Framework And A Local Standardised Test: A Former Item Writer’S Autoethnography, Xuan Minh Ngo Mar 2025

An International Framework And A Local Standardised Test: A Former Item Writer’S Autoethnography, Xuan Minh Ngo

The Qualitative Report

A recent trend dominating education worldwide is the enactment of external accountability frameworks and standards-based assessment. Likewise, in language education, international standards like the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) have been increasingly used for local standardised test development and alignment. However, there has been little research into the application of the CEFR in item writing, the activity of creating new items and associated materials, in local standardised testing contexts. To bridge this gap, this autoethnography shares my firsthand experience of writing items for a locally-developed, CEFR-aligned standardised English test in Vietnam. By combining evocative and analytic autoethnography, I aim …
