The Two Men Named Perez Andrews Of Oxford County, Maine, Kathrine C. Aydelott
The Two Men Named Perez Andrews Of Oxford County, Maine, Kathrine C. Aydelott
Faculty Publications
This article resolves a long-standing genealogical confusion between two men named Perez (or Peres) Andrews, whose overlapping names, lifespans, and locations in 19th-century Maine have led to persistent misidentification in published genealogies and family trees. Drawing on extensive primary source research—including land records, censuses, court cases, and vital records—this study reconstructs the distinct lives of Perez Andrews (b. ca. 1767) of Bakerstown, Minot, Buckfield, and Bradford, Maine; and Peres Andrews (b. 1797) of No. 2 Plantation and Sumner. The paper not only separates their identities and lineages but also probes possible familial connections among the Andrews families of western Maine. …

Women Writers In The Romantic Age, John C. Isbell
Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications
This groundbreaking book offers a comprehensive review of six hundred and fifty women writers from over fifty national traditions, spanning Europe and the Americas during the transformative years of 1776 to 1848. Framed by revolutionary upheavals, the book explores how women writers shaped and reflected Romanticism’s global currents. It fills a critical scholarly gap, connecting disparate traditions and uncovering voices often overlooked in male-dominated literary histories. Through concise entries, the book names every woman writer identified in its vast research, from celebrated figures like Phillis Wheatley to lesser-known authors whose manuscripts lay buried in archives. Each entry provides essential biographical …

Introduction: The Global Observatory for Physical Education (GoPE!) builds on the Global Observatory for Physical Activity (GoPA!) to address gaps in surveillance, policy, and research on physical education (PE) and activity (PA). GoPE! is a worldwide surveillance system of quality PE and school-based PA that informs policy and interventions and allows comparative analysis so that each country and region can check their status and progress. This paper presents GoPE!'s conceptual framework and describes the research protocol as a cross-continental and evidence-based surveillance system.
Methods: Based on GoPA!'s framework and informed by the European Physical Education Observatory, as well as framed …

Information For Environmental Governance: The Value Of State Of The Environmental Reports In A Polarized Era, Michael Vandenbergh, M. Caballero, Ethan I. Thorpe
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
The increasingly dysfunctional federal democratic process poses chal- lenges to effective, consistent responses to the most important environmental risks. Information about the state of the environment and the performance of environmental protection measures can play a surprisingly important role by providing the information necessary for the public and decision-makers to resist disinformation efforts and prioritize the responses to these threats. Until 1997 the White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) produced annual State of the Environment (SOE) reports as required by Section 201 of the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969. In response to paperwork reduc- tion legislation adopted in …

This Article introduces the new interdisciplinary field of Environmental Geography and Law, which has deep roots in ecology, social science, and law. Environmental and natural resources laws are situated in specific times and places where the climate, ecosystems, history and political economy influence both the land and the law. These places drive and constrain the way law develops. In turn, the law shapes places, from the dispossession and forced migration of indigenous groups, to land development via railroad land grants, to patterns of resource extraction and infrastructure development. Past efforts to integrate law and geography have focused more on critical …

Since the financial crisis of 2008, left-leaning legal thought has experienced a renaissance within the American academy. From law and political economy to critical race theory to feminist legal studies to Marxist legal theory, new perspectives have flourished, and marginalized traditions have been revived and revised. These new perspectives and revisionist projects all share an intellectual debt to the critical legal studies (“CLS”) movement of the late 1970s and 1980s. That movement’s critique was focused on functional accounts of law: accounts that understood legal change as primarily responsive to the demands of extralegal social and economic forces. Some of those …

This exploration of the role of authorship in copyright law proceeds in three parts: historical, doctrinal, and predictive. First, I will review the development of author-focused property rights in the pre-copyright regimes of printing privileges and in early Anglo-American copyright law through the 1909 U.S. Copyright Act. Second, I will analyze the extent to which the present U.S. copyright law does (and does not) honor human authorship. Finally, I will consider the potential responses of copyright law to the claims of proprietary rights in AI-generated outputs. I will explain why the humanist orientation of U.S. copyright law validates the position …

Roses And Concrete: Black Teachers' Roles And Challenges In Marginalized Communities, Alyse N. Barry
Dissertations
Black educators play a vital role in schools that serve marginalized communities, yet their stories are often overlooked in academic research. This phenomenological study explores how Black teachers interpret their roles and navigate challenges within these spaces. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), I centered the voices of ten Black educators to better understand the emotional, cultural, and professional layers of their experience.
Through in-depth interviews, participants described themselves as more than just instructors. They saw themselves as cultural connectors, advocates, and protectors for their students. Their presence helps affirm student identities and bridge cultural divides, but they also carry significant …

Intimate Partner Violence In Post-Conflict Communities: The Case Of Peru, Karen Eliana León Negreiros
Intimate Partner Violence In Post-Conflict Communities: The Case Of Peru, Karen Eliana León Negreiros
Theses and Dissertations
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a major public health issue worldwide and the most common type of violence experienced by women. In the last decade, a growing number of studies have evidenced that situations of civil conflict, post-conflict, and displacement can significantly exacerbate IPV and increase the likelihood of experiencing IPV later in life. This study expands on the literature by taking a Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping approach to understand how civil conflict violence in Peru (1980-2000) is associated with IPV rates in the country, 4 years (2004) and 19 years (2019) after the conflict. Study results evidence the …

Spatial Quantile Autoregressive Model: A Review, Sawsan Qassim Hadi, Omar Abdulmohsin Ali
Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences
This paper is specifically a detailed review of the Spatial Quantile Autoregressive (SARQR) model that refers to the incorporation of quantile regression models into spatial autoregressive models to facilitate an improved analysis of the characteristics of spatially dependent data. The relevance of SARQR is emphasized in most applications, including but not limited to the fields that might need the study of spatial variation and dependencies. In particular, it looks at literature dated from 1971 and 2024 and shows the extent to which SARQR had already been applied previously in other disciplines such as economics, real estate, environmental science, and epidemiology. …

The Glory Of The Islands: The Narrative Of Islands Behind The Design Of ‘Nagara Rimba Nusa’, Rebecca Victoria Simatupang, Rr. Diah Asih Purwaningrum
Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance
In the pursuit of creating its new capital city, the Indonesian government conducted a design competition to find alternatives that best represented the fusion between traditional and modern Indonesia. The winning design titled ‘Nagara Rimba Nusa’ employed the narrative of glorious islands as the basis of its design concepts, evoking nostalgic memories of ‘Nusantara’ in the era of the Majapahit Kingdom. This narrative became effective in capturing public attention, followed by the President of Indonesia’s decision to formalize Nusantara as the new name of the capital city. This paper delves into the design of Nagara Rimba Nusa and analyses how …

Delirium And Derangement: Futurities Of Climatic And Islandic Relationality In Philippine Artistic Practice, Isa Lacuna
Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance
The Philippines as locus of both specific experience and shared sympathy with regard to climate change allows for an investigation of the complex factors that describe a realm of experience unique to this present age: catastrophic weather in both its scorching and diluvian iterations. In this paper, I argue that the atmospheric delusions in the artistic practices of Mark Orozco Justiniani’s Arkipelago and the Vargas Museum’s Fever Dream point to a more expansive relationality with climate that forces us to re-evaluate precisely what ecocritical scholars have called the derangements of everyday modern life. The experience of exceptional heat and rain, …

Libraries use volunteers. Research indicates various barriers to volunteering. After these barriers have been overcome, it is of great importance that the volunteer is welcomed into the organization. Therefore, hospitality is not just about receiving patrons but also receiving (new) volunteers. For this study, concepts from volunteering were synthesized with hospitality concepts. This case study took place at a library in the northern part of the Netherlands. Data was collected from interviews with management and volunteers in a focus group discussion. The findings were triangulated with official documents from the library. A matrix of hospitality practices is proposed to help …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This article speculates how art in public space might evolve in a COVID-19 world. We examine the complexity embedded within the realm of public space using two public art projects as case studies: an artwork produced as part of an artist residency inside the Parliament of Western Australia and a public artwork commission for a highway interchange at Wanneroo, Western Australia. Both projects are used as examples to speculate on how we might navigate the complexity and possibilities for art in public as a consequence of a refiguration of such public spaces resulting from COVID-19 prevention measures. This article postulates …

Study region: Serbian Danube River Basin
Study focus: As climate change makes weather patterns more erratic, water supply for agriculture is becoming increasingly uncertain. This is concerning in the Serbian Danube River Basin, where crops are mainly rainfed and the growing season is becoming warmer and drier. Assessing the balance between future agricultural water demand and availability in a changing climate is critical to address agricultural water scarcity. To understand how changing climate will affect water availability during 2041–2070, we used the Soil and Water Assessment Tool+ hydrological model with field-scale crop rotations and irrigated extent data and forced with …

Media Quiteracy: Why Digital Disconnection Belongs In The Media Literacy Curriculum, Katie Day Good
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
In this essay, we introduce media quiteracy, which we use to conceptualize and describe the valuable learning that can happen through the refusal to take up new media or the act of pausing or ceasing its use. We see media quiteracy as an active and generative approach to learning and argue for its inclusion in the media literacy curriculum. We trace the history of critical engagement with technologies within education and then articulate what media quiteracy can look like in practice. We surface and discuss three potential obstacles to teaching media quiteracy, which include the ways in which it problematizes …

Geography
Regional chapters in the National Climate Assessment (NCA) report provide a comprehensive synthesis of how climate change is impacting United States regions and are extensively used to support climate change decision-making by local communities and policymakers. The regional chapter author teams are tasked with assessing the climate trends, risks, and responses across a range of sectors and across a vast and diverse geography, while making content locally relevant. Regional chapters have evolved in many ways since the third NCA (NCA3), often shifting from focusing on climate stressors and hazards to addressing more diverse human-centric impacts (e.g., human health), inequities, and …
