Beyond Climate Change: A Model Of Sustainable Development For The Maritime Industry, David Adkins
Beyond Climate Change: A Model Of Sustainable Development For The Maritime Industry, David Adkins
Plymouth Business School
Recent discussions on sustainable development in the maritime industry have focused on climate change, emissions reduction, and future fuels. While vital for global trade and climate management, these topics are only part of the broader sustainable development agenda. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) highlight the need to expand this conversation. Through a series of interviews, this study aims to develop a sustainable development model tailored to the maritime industry. Defining the maritime industry, and contextualising sustainable development to the sector provides significant challenges. The industry’s diversity complicates any definition as it encompasses shipping, maritime services, shipbuilding, education, …
Olmstead 25 Years Later: Advocating For Children With Mental Health And Behavioral Health Needs, Laura C. Hoffman
Olmstead 25 Years Later: Advocating For Children With Mental Health And Behavioral Health Needs, Laura C. Hoffman
Mercer Law Review
On June 22, 1999, the Supreme Court of the United States issued a monumental decision in the history of the disability rights movement in Olmstead v. L.C. by Zimring. As people with disabilities, especially those with mental health conditions or developmental disabilities, were frequently institutionalized without much of any thought to allowing them to be a part of the community, the Olmstead decision changed all of that, at least in terms of the acknowledgment of the legal right to a placement in the least‑restrictive environment whenever possible and cementing into legal protections the understanding that community integration was firmly …

Tomorrow’S Climate Law, Today, Daniel E. Walters
Faculty Scholarship
The prospects for domestic legislation or international treaties that would require governments, businesses, and individuals to stop emitting the greenhouse gases that cause global climate change are particularly bleak these days. Even as the United States has recently passed its most ambitious climate legislation to date in the Inflation Reduction Act and related “green industrial policy” legislation, these successes were ultimately a compromise with politicians who refused to consider more direct controls on emissions. Assuming they survive the second Trump Administration, the green subsidies and nudges contained in these laws, coupled with a groundswell of private environmental governance, will do …

Investigating The Separation Of Environmental Education And People With Mobility/Motor Disabilities In National Parks, Ariel Wapnick
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
Accessibility in national parks is crucial for inclusive environmental education (EE) programs, yet significant barriers persist for individuals with physical disabilities. This study investigates how 4 educators at 4 national parks perceive and implement inclusive practices in outdoor educational programming for people with physical disabilities by answering the questions: How do educators at national parks describe their ability to include people with physical disabilities in outdoor educational programming? What have these educators found to be successful in delivering inclusive outdoor educational programs to people with physical disabilities? Drawing on study participants’ professional experiences, the study explores the current state of …

The Cost Of Capital: Lowering The Cost Of Capital For Climate And Sdg Finance In Emerging Markets And Developing Economies (Emdes), Jeffrey D. Sachs, Lisa E. Sachs, Ana M. Camelo Vega, Bradford M. Willis
Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment
Today, some of the world's fastest-growing economies face some of the highest borrowing costs – even for clean energy and development projects with strong fundamentals. This is not a function of global capital scarcity. Trillions are available. The problem lies in systemic barriers that prevent capital from flowing to where it’s most urgently needed. The high cost of capital in EMDEs not only undermines critical financing for the energy transition and sustainable development; it also limits the ability for US- and EU-based financial institutions to invest in and finance projects in EMDEs, despite institutional and stakeholder appetite and interest for …
Dangerous Legitimacy: The Risks Of Normalizing Hamas As A Fundamentalist Terror Group In Western Discourse, Shevach Berkovits, Darnell Downes, Hunter Lacroix, Michael Dobkowski
Dangerous Legitimacy: The Risks Of Normalizing Hamas As A Fundamentalist Terror Group In Western Discourse, Shevach Berkovits, Darnell Downes, Hunter Lacroix, Michael Dobkowski
Journal of Strategic Security
This article examines the dangers of Western discourse misrepresenting and normalizing Hamas, a fundamentalist terrorist group, as a legitimate actor in regional crises and conflicts. It explores Hamas' origins as a global terrorist organization, its history of armed conflict with neighbors and the broader Western world, and its ideological roots in religious fundamentalism and totalitarianism. The article argues that Hamas’ principles and actions are fundamentally incompatible with Western democratic ideals, posing a significant threat to regional and global security. It also addresses the ongoing challenges of "Western washing" Hamas through propaganda spread via social activism and social media. The article …

Flood Risk Assessment In Humanitarian Contexts: A Remote Sensing And Gis Methodology Applied To Nyarugusu Refugee Camp, Tanzania, Carolyne Vincent Mbirika
Theses
Flooding is a global challenge, with effects mostly experienced in developing countries due to insufficient data for effective flood risk assessment and management. Refugee settlements are particularly vulnerable to flooding due to their remote locations, high population density, and temporary shelters, necessitating flood susceptibility mapping to effectively mitigate risks and minimize damage prior to flooding events. This study assessed flood susceptibility in the Nyarugusu refugee camp, Tanzania, through Multi-criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) and Analytical Hierarchy Process using remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) approaches. The flood susceptibility map that resulted from this process categorizes flood-prone areas into three classes: …
Climate And Crop Modeling For New England Agricultural Climate Change Adaptation, Madeline K. Wolfe
Climate And Crop Modeling For New England Agricultural Climate Change Adaptation, Madeline K. Wolfe
Geography Undergraduate Senior Theses
As climate change brings increased temperatures and precipitation variability to New England, it is imperative to understand the ways that farmers make decisions about agricultural climate change adaptation for their corn farms. Dairy farming is the largest agricultural industry in New England, with corn being a primary crop to feed these cattle. This project seeks to understand how climate modeling and crop modeling are and are not useful for these corn farm decisions, and contributes research about what types of information are useful and available to farmers making adaptation decisions. Crop modeling over New England reveals that corn farming in …
Suspended Agency And The Habitus Of Waiting In A Migrant Shelter In Tijuana, Liam K. Ogden Iii
Suspended Agency And The Habitus Of Waiting In A Migrant Shelter In Tijuana, Liam K. Ogden Iii
Senior Theses
This thesis explores idea of suspended agency and the development of a habitus of waiting within a women and children’s migrant shelter in Tijuana, Mexico. Relying on ten days of participant observation and an interview with a shelter director, I examine the lived experiences of residents, workers, and myself as a researcher navigating humanitarian space. Shelters are designed to be short term spaces, but migrants are often forced into long-term, uncertain stays due to restrictive border policies and structural barriers, resulting in a social stasis defined by boredom, anxiety, and monotony within the shelter. Drawing on Bourdieu’s concept of habitus …

Dental Disparities: An Analysis Of Dental Caries Risk Factors Promoting Disparities Between Rural And Urban Communities In Nebraska, Nick Lounsbery
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
The prevalence of dental caries in the United States remains a public health concern, as it is one of the most common chronic conditions across people of all ages. Research shows that preventative measures including brushing, fluoridated water, and regular checkups are effective strategies to mitigate tooth decay. However, there appears to be a divide between rural and urban populations, as the presence of dental cavities is significantly greater in remote areas in the State of Nebraska. Research methods used in this analysis included analyzing accredited academic literature to illustrate how cavities form from a biochemical perspective. Research methods also …
The Architecture Of National Identity In Jordan: Historical Narratives, State Power, And The Question Of Belonging, Nina Skweres
The Architecture Of National Identity In Jordan: Historical Narratives, State Power, And The Question Of Belonging, Nina Skweres
Jordan: Geopolitics, International Relations, and the Future of the Middle East
This study explores the role of narratives in the construction of Jordanian national identity and examines how Palestinian-Jordanians are included or marginalized within these narratives. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s theories of symbolic power and cultural capital, the paper analyzes interviews with eight individuals ranging from academics to policymakers to civilians alongside literary sources. The findings reveal a state-sponsored identity centered around Hashemite legitimacy and Bedouin heritage, contrasted by more inclusive social attitudes especially among urban and younger populations. Interviewees spoke about a significant divergence between national unity as portrayed by state institutions and the lived experiences of Palestinian-Jordanians, whose identities …
Comparative Analyses Of Neurorehabilitation Regulations And Health Equity In The U.S., Switzerland, And China: Implications For Universal Health Coverage, Linyue Lu
Switzerland: Global Health and Development Policy
Introduction: As populations age and the burden of neurological conditions rises, equitable access to neurorehabilitation has emerged as a critical yet under-addressed component of Universal Health Coverage (UHC). This comparative study examines how healthcare structures in the United States, Switzerland, and China shape neurorehabilitation equity. Methods: This analysis combines semi-structured interviews with seven healthcare experts (neurorehabilitation clinicians, health economists, and scholars) and a systematic review of peer-reviewed literature, policy documents, and demographic data. Results: In the U.S., fragmented insurance models and high out-of-pocket costs disproportionately limit access for low-income and rural populations. Switzerland’s universal coverage masks the inequities driven by …

The Impact Of American Politics On Canadian Voters, Reilly Funk
The Impact Of American Politics On Canadian Voters, Reilly Funk
Political Science Theses and Capstones
I analyze to what degree American political forces shape Canadian elections. Due to the unique economic and cultural relationship between the countries, U.S. political and policy changes impact the Canadian political landscape. I examine this relationship with a comparative study using the Canadian Election Study of the 2021 federal election. This data enables analysis of voter behaviour within a wide variety of voters. Tentative findings show that major political events within the United States, such as presidential elections and major policy shifts, have a major impact on election results in Canada. Canadian political parties consistently adjust their messaging strategies to …
Exploring The Use Of Artificial Intelligence As An Instructional Learning Tool In Middle School Mathematics Classrooms, Maurice Guest Jr
Exploring The Use Of Artificial Intelligence As An Instructional Learning Tool In Middle School Mathematics Classrooms, Maurice Guest Jr
Student Theses and Dissertations
This quantitative causal-comparative study explored the effectiveness of AI instructional/learning tools, specifically the IXL platform, in middle school mathematics classrooms. In this study, AI tools, such as IXL, were investigated to determine if there was a significant influence on students’ academic growth and achievement in light of the continuing teacher shortage in Arkansas. The lack of highly qualified teachers has led to Arkansas high school students’ underperformance in mathematics. Framed by a Constructivist approach, the study viewed learning as an active, engaged experience in which students shaped their own learning, rather than passively receiving information in the classroom. Data from …
The Three Ps: Political Polarization, Perception, And Pedagogy, Tianka Renee Sheard Mitchell
The Three Ps: Political Polarization, Perception, And Pedagogy, Tianka Renee Sheard Mitchell
Student Theses and Dissertations
Political polarization significantly impacts modern education, especially within social studies, where teachers confront sensitive issues in their curricula. This study addressed two research questions: RQ1 examined teachers’ perceptions of the influence of political polarization, and RQ2 explored how these perceptions affect their pedagogy. Through the lens of Reconstructionist Educational Theory, this research highlights the necessity for social studies education to cultivate critical thinking and civic engagement among students. The study aimed to determine whether social studies teachers modify their instructional approaches in response to political polarization, as avoiding "hard history" could jeopardize students’ critical thinking and cultural literacy. Participants shared …
The Law Of Heredity -- Whistelo, Whiteness And Whales, Walter J. Walsh
The Law Of Heredity -- Whistelo, Whiteness And Whales, Walter J. Walsh
William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice
This Article reveals the impact of an early New York case upon science and law, raising questions about heredity that spurred evidentiary progress from maternal imagination to visual resemblance, and later from blood groups to DNA paternity testing. In the Jeffersonian republic, a dark-skinned man was charged with reputedly fathering the infant daughter of a mixed-race woman. However, to most witnesses this light-skinned child appeared to be the offspring of a White man. The trial of Commissioners of the Alms-House, vs Alexander Whistelo, a Black man, being a Remarkable Case of Bastardy (1808) became a cause célèbre in both law …
Familial Fairness: Guaranteeing The Right To Counsel For Indigent Parents In Juvenile Dependency Proceedings, Jake Toth
Dickinson Law Review (2017-Present)
Fairness principles enumerated in the seminal case Gideon v. Wainwright stand for the proposition that fundamental fairness and due process require appointment of counsel for indigent litigants. However, this principle has been constrained to criminal contexts. Many other types of litigation are just as impactful as a criminal proceeding, including juvenile dependency proceedings. Nevertheless, indigent parents do not enjoy an unqualified representation right.
This Comment traces the history of the representation right and how it has been treated in a juvenile dependency context, beginning with Gideon itself and examining other cases such as Eldridge and Lassiter. It then examines …
Writing In The Aftermath Of War: Literature And Disenchantment In Postwar Central America, Nanci Buiza
Writing In The Aftermath Of War: Literature And Disenchantment In Postwar Central America, Nanci Buiza
Spanish Faculty Works
This article examines the challenges faced by Central American writers during a period of profound cultural, political, and economic change, as Central America transitioned from an era of civil war and revolutionary struggle to one of peace, democracy, and neoliberal state-building, spanning from the 1990s to the 2010s. At the core of this change was a pervasive sense of disenchantment, understood not merely as disillusionment with the failures of the peacebuilding process but as a hollowing out of society’s capacity to envision Central American reality on a broader and more meaningful scale. This deeper, more intractable aspect of disenchantment and …
Ghosting The Crowd, Andrew A. Schwartz
Ghosting The Crowd, Andrew A. Schwartz
Washington and Lee Law Review
Crowdfunded companies are legally bound to provide investors with an annual report—but most don’t. This “ghosting of the crowd” violates federal securities laws and raises the risk of opportunism by entrepreneurs, who are more prone to misbehave if no one is watching. Most ominously, it threatens the very viability of the investment crowdfunding market, as investors who are ghosted by one company are less likely to invest in another.
This Article reports on the embarrassing record of noncompliance with the annual report rule imposed by the Jumpstart Our Business Startups (“JOBS”) Act of 2012 and Regulation Crowdfunding, and proposes a …
Drivers Of Effective Laws For Automated Vehicles, William Hubbard
Drivers Of Effective Laws For Automated Vehicles, William Hubbard
Articles
Hundreds of thousands of automated vehicles (AVs) are currently driving on America’s roads. The defining feature of AVs is that sophisticated technological systems control some or even all aspects of vehicle movement. Like any motor vehicle, AVs provide many benefits but also raise significant safety concerns. Indeed, people are already dying in collisions with AVs. Effective AV regulation is therefore critical.
This Article addresses an important—perhaps the most important— issue of AV regulation today. Recent empirical research has uncovered a shocking legal crisis: more than 40,000 conventional state laws are unclear or ineffective when applied to AVs. Fortunately, the vast …
Challenges In Higher Education For Latino U.S - Born Children Of Undocumented Immigrants, Lupita Gomez Benitez
Challenges In Higher Education For Latino U.S - Born Children Of Undocumented Immigrants, Lupita Gomez Benitez
Senior Theses
Latino native-born children of undocumented immigrants in the United States occupy a unique position within American society. They are citizens by birth and therefore, entitled to all the rights of a regular citizen. However, society does not treat them as such due to their parents' legal status. This paper analyzes the barriers that these students face during the higher education process, specifically in South Carolina. The study uses a review of existing literature and qualitative interviews to uncover some of these challenges and why these students do not ask for help. The findings suggest that these students do have certain …

Between Borders And Belief: Perspectives Of Aid Workers On Religion In A Migrant Shelter In Mexico, Kendall O. Roy
Senior Theses
This thesis seeks to understand the significance of religion in the Central American migration context through the eyes of humanitarian aid workers. It is based on interviews that I conducted in May of 2024 with staff members at a migrant shelter in Mexico, analysis of prior scholarship, and building upon an understanding of relevant religious history in Latin America. I will delve into trends that the aid workers observed in areas such as religious practices and beliefs of migrants, shelter functions that addressed and nurtured spiritual well-being, and the influence of the Church as an institution on humanitarian aid work. …
Education As Cultural Diplomacy: Examining International Student Experiences At A Public University In The Southeastern United States, Sydney A. Wilson
Education As Cultural Diplomacy: Examining International Student Experiences At A Public University In The Southeastern United States, Sydney A. Wilson
Senior Theses
This thesis explores how the lived experiences of undergraduate international students at a public university in the Southeastern United States (US) reflect and contribute to the practice of cultural diplomacy. While the existing literature on international education as an instrument of soft power tends to focus on overtly state-sponsored programs such as the Fulbright, this study is centered around exchange students specifically participating in independently coordinated partner programs. Drawing on influential political science figures such as Joseph Nye and Milton Cummings’ conceptualization of the terms ‘soft power’ and ‘cultural diplomacy,’ this research highlights the important role informal and interpersonal interactions …

Connecting Cultures Through Nature Exploring Cross-Cultural Environmental Education And Global Citizenship At Hanoi Edufarm, Shreeya Patel
Vietnam: Culture, Social Change, and Development
This paper explores the role of cross-cultural, nature-based education in fostering intercultural understanding and environmental awareness among children through my internship completed at Hanoi EduFarm, a farm school located in the countryside of Hanoi, Vietnam. While initially intended to focus on sustainable and regenerative agriculture, the internship evolved into a teaching role, where I designed and led lessons in English centered on environmental topics, geography, and intercultural exchange.
Drawing from in-class participant observations, reflective journaling, and informal discussions with staff and faculty over 120 hours of the internship period for SIT Vietnam, this paper examines how shared experiences with nature …
