How Abraham Varghese’S Ecologies Begin The Healing Process In "The Covenant Of Water", Dominique Snedeker
How Abraham Varghese’S Ecologies Begin The Healing Process In "The Covenant Of Water", Dominique Snedeker
Dr. Jay W. Boland Research Day
Timothy Morton’s ecological thought considers everything internal and external for the purpose of reframing thinking about the world and how we exist in it. When applied to literature, this ecological thought is the textual fabric of the work formed by the author’s intentions, everything unconsciously revealed as symptoms of the author’s social context, worldview, education, location, time, class etc., and all the ways readers respond to the internal literary ecosystems. Dense with ecologies, Abraham Varghese’s The Covenant of Water follows a family through the end of colonialism into the late twentieth century, a time of existential crisis for both the …
Climate Change Adaptation Through Economic Democracy, Shriraksha Mohan
Climate Change Adaptation Through Economic Democracy, Shriraksha Mohan
Best Integrated Writing
Mohan investigates and combines three different areas of literature and social movements to discuss the problem of climate change and economic adaptation. The value of this work is that it can be used to communicate among three independent types of social movements and inquiries. This can strengthen and connect dispersed yet overlapping efforts in addressing work issues, resource utilization, economic governance and participation, and ecological problems economies face today.

Migration Models· Application In An African Context (An Analytical Review), Ademola T. Salau
The Geographical Bulletin
The history of Africa is full of the accounts of movements of people on large scales. Some of the movements had occurred in the form of conquests in war and some had taken place by a slow and largely peaceful shift to new lands. Such movements we are told, have been a feature of Africa in the past and are one of its most important demographic features at present. There is no phase of African history which can be understood without reference to the movements of people both before and during it." However, there are differences in types, magnitudes and …

The Impact Of Land Use On Wildlife Habitat, Dean Wilde
The Impact Of Land Use On Wildlife Habitat, Dean Wilde
The Geographical Bulletin
The scope of biogeography includes, among other things, the analysis of the distribution and redistribution of biota as a result of a more or less purposeful and direct modification of the natural environment by man.! One aspect of human modification of natural environments has been the alteration and destruction of wi Idlife habitats. Wildlife is a product of the land.2 Different kinds of wildlife can occupy the land only so long as their required habitat types exist in a particular spatial arrangement. The maximum population of wildlife that any given unit of land can support, therefore depends on the interspersion …

The Geographical Bulletin
The fare this issue is varied -- one article deals with some aspects of mobile homes; one with wildlife habitat; and, one with migration. And in the entire lot of them there is only one set of maps -- and those were done by a computer. I keep looking for maps in papers which are submitted. On occasion, there is one. Often there are photos or diagrams -- but not frequently enough. Do we really stress today our basic tools in Geography? Does anyone teach a course in how to photograph as well as how to analyze photos? The National …
The Tragic Mind: Fear, Fate, And The Burden Of Power, Thomas F. Lynch Iii
The Tragic Mind: Fear, Fate, And The Burden Of Power, Thomas F. Lynch Iii
Joint Force Quarterly
This book review assesses Robert D. Kaplan’s The Tragic Mind: Fear, Fate, and the Burden of Power, a reflection on leadership, war, history, and the consequences of using military force. Drawing on Kaplan’s experiences reporting from conflict zones and his engagement with classical and modern thinkers, the review highlights the book’s central argument that political and military leaders must approach the use of force with humility, prudence, and an awareness of unintended consequences. Kaplan presents the “tragic mind” as a way of thinking that recognizes the tension between order and tyranny, the limits of human control, and the danger …
War In Ukraine: Conflict, Strategy, And The Return Of A Fractured World; The War For Ukraine: Strategy And Adaptation Under Fire; A Call To Action: Lessons From Ukraine For The Future Force, Frank Hoffman
Joint Force Quarterly
This book review considers three recent works on the war in Ukraine: War in Ukraine: Conflict, Strategy, and the Return of a Fractured World, edited by Hal Brands; The War for Ukraine: Strategy and Adaptation Under Fire by Mick Ryan; and A Call to Action: Lessons from Ukraine for the Future Force, edited by John A. Nagl and Katie Crombe. The reviewer argues that the three books provide complementary perspectives on the conflict at the strategic, operational, and tactical levels while highlighting the difficulty of drawing firm lessons from an ongoing war. The review discusses strategic decisionmaking and …

Art And Enchantment: How Wonder Works By Patrick Curry, N. Trevor Brierly
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Patrick Curry has written extensively on Tolkien, art and enchantment, and Art and Enchantment is his most academic in nature on these subjects, and the most fully developed and detailed. Curry describes and analyzes both enchantment and disenchantment. He focuses on art, artists and artistic movements and whether they might be more, or less, conducive to enchantment. In particular he notes that modernism is largely hostile to enchantment.

Pandemic Mythmaking: Covid-19 And Mythological Symbolism In Indian Folk Art, Ishani Anwesha Joshi, Sathyaraj Venkatesan
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Through a comprehensive analysis of Durga Bai Vyam’s “Samura Manthan” and Rupsona and Bahadur Chitrakar’s “Corona Rakshasa,” this article aims to investigate how mythological stories and themes have been used in the Indian context in folk art during the COVID-19 pandemic. The investigation will offer insights into how artists have leveraged mythological symbolism to infuse their works with richer layers of meaning, thereby engaging readers in a deeper exploration of the pandemic’s impact on society and the human psyche. By close-reading the aforementioned paintings, this study aims to illustrate the evolving visual representation of cultural narratives …
An Aspirational Cultus? Tolkien Fandom At The Borders Of Belief, Tom Emanuel
An Aspirational Cultus? Tolkien Fandom At The Borders Of Belief, Tom Emanuel
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
This paper draws upon fan studies, sociology of religion, and J.R.R. Tolkien’s theory of sub-creation to theorize the religious implications of Enyalië (Quenya: remembrance), the emotionally charged graveside memorial which closes the U.K. Tolkien Society’s annual gathering in Oxford. Employing a framework of religion as sacred worldbuilding, the author argues that Enyalië is best understood as the “secondary liturgy” of the “secondary faith community” that is Tolkien fandom. The paper concludes that Tolkien’s fiction, his community of devoted fans, and the lineaments of religious ritual have combined, in Enyalië, to produce a fan practice which troubles the boundaries …

An Empire In A City: Foundations Of Washington, D.C., 1776 To 1861, Ronni Desjardins
Madison Historical Review
This research project will examine the foundations of Washington, D.C., and how the city’s map and construction identify imperial inspirations that influenced its design and use. It will also examine how these imperial frameworks were intentionally created to sustain historical narratives about the American people and their government. Using correspondence from James Madison and other Founding Fathers, the intention behind the construction of the national capital city becomes significant to our understanding of the political and national philosophy that exists in the current national atmosphere. By placing the capital at the geographic and economic center of the empire, the government …

Diversity/Adaptations Of The Galapagos Land Snails (Bulimulus) On The Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, M.E. Hargan, Charles Lydeard
2025 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations
The Galapagos Land Snails, scientific species name Bulimulus, are native to the Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador. There is varying climates and geography throughout the islands and these snails evolved and adapted to these variances. On our experience abroad trip, the goal was to find our selected animal we researched and try to prove whatever hypothesis we found to be correct. I researched and found that depending on the island/area the snails where their cones were shaped different from each other although they were the same species they had variances. I had set out to see if this …

Background: American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) youth experience numerous health inequities, including those in sexual, reproductive, and mental health. Implementation of culturally relevant, age-appropriate evidence-based programs may mitigate these inequities. However, numerous barriers limit the adoption and implementation of evidence-based adolescent health promotion programs in AI/AN communities.
Objective: This study examines user reach and engagement from 2022 to 2024 of web-based decision support (the Healthy Native Youth [HNY] website and the embedded HNY Implementation Toolbox), designed to increase the implementation of evidence-based adolescent health promotion programming in AI/AN communities.
Methods: Promotional strategies were designed for optimal geographic reach to …

Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Social media health interventions have grown significantly in recent years. However, researchers are still developing innovative methods to meaningfully engage online communities to inform research activities. Little has been documented describing this approach of using online community advisory boards (CABs) to co-create health communication interventions on social media.
OBJECTIVE: This study describes the formation, engagement, and maintenance of an online CAB focused on co-creating a health education intervention for parents regarding the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. The study provides guiding principles for public health researchers implementing such CABs in future digital health interventions.
METHODS: In May 2020, Twitter was …
The Influence Of Network Based Technologies On Modern Applied Trumpet Pedagogy, Dennis Anthony Smith
The Influence Of Network Based Technologies On Modern Applied Trumpet Pedagogy, Dennis Anthony Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, focus has been drawn to the efficacy of synchronous applied music instruction in the networked environment. In March of 2020, all university faculty in higher education across all disciplines were suddenly forced to adapt pedagogy to a co-present networked environment, many with little knowledge or training in the current technologies. Poor audio and video quality, cold unwelcoming video teaching atmosphere, and frustrating user experience created a difficult networked environment for traditional applied studios. The pandemic accelerated the need for both quality online instructional experiences and formalized training for faculty within the areas of …
Determining Stature Using Hand And Foot Dimensions On Understudied Ethnicities, Kati Platt, Andrew Albus, Andrew Stoltzfus
Determining Stature Using Hand And Foot Dimensions On Understudied Ethnicities, Kati Platt, Andrew Albus, Andrew Stoltzfus
Liberty University Research Week
Within Central America, 96% of murders go unresolved. On the contrary, only about 30% of murders go unresolved in India. Anthropometric measurements of hands and feet have been done to determine stature of a person in areas with lower unresolved murders, with less information on Hispanic ethnicities. This gap in knowledge between these two different areas and ethnicities provides the framework for this study. In many developing countries, anatomical measurements are the only source available for identification due to the cost and availability of DNA analysis. The study of anthropometry aids in the identification process. Environmental factors, lifestyle, and genetics …

The Horror Of Memory In The Southern Gothic, Caelainn Robertson
The Horror Of Memory In The Southern Gothic, Caelainn Robertson
Undergraduate Research Symposium
Scenes of expansive cotton fields and rotting Manor houses lined by moss covered oaks where strange fruit once hung induce an acute sense of horror from an audience familiar with these relics. The genre of “Southern Gothic” spans literature, film and music and is built on themes of cultural repression in the Southern United States. This tradition explores fears rooted in lingering memories of human enslavement and patriarchal domination. In a culture marked by racial violence and class oppression, evil is, often, identifiable by markers of wealth and white skin. Historical memories only exacerbate suffering. Many contemporary works use the …

How Green Are We? Socioeconomic Drivers Of Sustainable Spending, Malia Wilson
How Green Are We? Socioeconomic Drivers Of Sustainable Spending, Malia Wilson
2025 Undergraduate Research Showcase
Sustainable fashion has gained traction as society has become more aware about environmental and ethical concerns in the apparel industry. My personal interest in sustainable clothing behaviors was sparked after reading The Year of Less by Cait Flanders. Her memoir details the impacts of consumer habits on personal well-being and the environment while taking readers through her one year spent buying absolutely nothing deemed unnecessary. This book made me question the motivations behind clothing purchases and the factors influencing sustainable fashion choices. One of the biggest concerns in the fashion industry is its significant impact which accounts for 10% of …

Mapping And Assessing High-Resolution Typhoon Exposure And Vulnerability In The Philippines: A Scoping Review, J. Andres F. Ignacio
Mapping And Assessing High-Resolution Typhoon Exposure And Vulnerability In The Philippines: A Scoping Review, J. Andres F. Ignacio
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
This scoping review synthesizes the extensive literature on mapping high‑resolution typhoon exposure and assessing household and housing vulnerability in the Philippines. With approximately 20 typhoons passing through the Philippine Area of Responsibility annually—and seven to eight making landfall—the country faces enormous challenges that demand localized and granular risk assessments. Early approaches typically employed fixed‑buffer techniques to delineate exposure; however, recent research has shifted toward dynamic, multi‑hazard models incorporating real‑time meteorological data, numerical wind field and storm surge simulations, and advanced remote sensing imagery. Concomitantly, vulnerability assessments have evolved from indicator‑based composite indices to hybrid approaches that integrate quantitative household survey …
