Supercontinuum Generation By Controlling Pitch In Photonic Crystal Fibers, Mohammed Salim Jasim Al-Taie Apr 2025

Supercontinuum Generation By Controlling Pitch In Photonic Crystal Fibers, Mohammed Salim Jasim Al-Taie

Sultan Qaboos University Journal For Science

The influence of varying the distance between air holes (pitch) on the geography of solitone propagation through a photonic crystal fiber has been tested. The study depends on the Split-Step Fourier method and the results quantified using MATLAB. The first-order solitone was tested with the change in pitch, and it was found that there is a clear decay in the amplitude of the resulting pulse with an increase in pitch. When increasing the pitch in the case of second-order solitons, it was noticed that the pulse would split into multiple-order solitons down to higher-order solitons with the increase in pitch. …

Lithology Characteristics And Diagenesis Of Late Pleistocene-Holocene Coastal Terraces Of The Yemeni Red Sea: Implication For Paleoclimatic Records, Ahmed Saif Al-Mikhlafi

Sultan Qaboos University Journal For Science

The development of Holocene-Pleistocene fringing reefs in the Yemeni Red Sea (YRS) is controlled by sediment input and variations in accommodation space. Lithostratigraphic correlation of environmental facies in the investigated sites shows a sequence of successive events, and each can be subdivided into 2 or 3 main sequences. The upper sequence is characterized by the dominance of coral and coralline algal frameworks. The lower sequences are varied and can be attributed to spatial and temporal variability. Meteoric diagenesis is the most dominant and includes dissolution, calcrete, and coral recrystallization. Lithologic and mineralogic investigations of the Pleistocene-Holocene coral reefs display three …

No Evidence For Warming Effects On Tallgrass Prairie Plant Extirpation In Kalamazoo Michigan, Emily D. Horner Apr 2025

No Evidence For Warming Effects On Tallgrass Prairie Plant Extirpation In Kalamazoo Michigan, Emily D. Horner

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Title: No evidence for warming effects on tallgrass prairie plant extirpation in Kalamazoo Michigan

Author list: Emily Horner, Meredith Zettlemoyer

Abstract:

More and more species face extinction as our climate warms. Understanding how climate change influences local extinctions may help us comprehend and predict global extinctions. Ultimately, local extinction originates from declines in vital rates such as survival, growth, and reproduction. One way to examine how warming affects local extinctions is to compare responses between locally extinct (or “extirpated”) versus still present (or “extant”) species. In this comparative framework, more negative effects of warming on extirpated species’ vital rates would …

Rewilding Rattlesnake Creek, Cameron M. Kirwan, Ethaniel Marshall Apr 2025

Rewilding Rattlesnake Creek, Cameron M. Kirwan, Ethaniel Marshall

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Rattlesnake Creek north of Missoula lacks significant in-stream structure in the form of large wood downstream of the National Recreation Area. The natural introduction of large wood from the “derecho” wind event in July of 2024 has the potential to provide much needed aquatic habitat and stream complexity.

The focus of this project is monitoring the process of “rewilding” on Rattlesnake Creek through surveys of large wood and pool habitat. The Rattlesnake has historically been subject to various forms of degradation. It was dammed in 1904, with the dam being removed 116 years later in 2020 as part of stream …

Consuming The Tropics In The 'Age Of The Insect': Imperial Imaginaries Of Frontier Ecologies In Spectacular Expositions, Adria Capozzoli

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

By surveying representations of 'exotic' landscapes and 'monstrous' other-than-human creatures of the tropics featured in exhibits of the fin de siecle and early interwar period, including visual displays and descriptive language at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago (1893) and the Panama-Pacific International Exposition (PPIE) in San Francisco (1915), this project examines tropical frontiers as conceived in the geographical imaginaries of the United States to explore how metropolitan audiences related to those environments encountered at the imperial periphery. Between 1890 and 1920, were the infamously exaggerated characterizations of nineteenth-century spectacle tempered by the advent of twentieth-century cultural and scientific discourses, …

Does Geography Affect People’S Choice To Change Their Surname After Marriage?, Raniyah Perris, Aleksandra Zubrowski, Mayoori Giritharan

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Our research concerned the relationship between geography, and whether people choose to change their last names after marriage. We were interested in this topic because we pondered on the idea of whether there were other factors outside of family and beliefs that acted as a socializing agent that impacted an individual’s choice to change their last name after marriage. This topic is sociologically relevant because it helps people better understand how society is slowly beginning to change by geographic region, and also how traditions that sociologically impact individuals and communities are now beginning to change. Our literature review supports our …
