Redefining Roles In Displacement: The Asylum Journey Of Sudanese Women In Faisal, Cairo, Majeda Abdin Mahasneh May 2025

Redefining Roles In Displacement: The Asylum Journey Of Sudanese Women In Faisal, Cairo, Majeda Abdin Mahasneh

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines how Sudanese refugee women, who arrived in Faisal, Cairo, after April 2023 experience gender-based violence (GBV). The research investigates the types of GBV these women encountered during their journey from Sudan to Cairo, how their gender roles changed in the asylum context, and their vision for the future regarding safety and support. A qualitative approach was employed, using in-depth interviews with four Sudanese refugee women, complemented by field notes and observations made during visits to the Faisal neighborhood. The analysis focused on the personal stories shared by the women, highlighting the various forms of violence they experienced, …

Linking Geographic Distribution And Niche Through Estimation Of Niche Density, Tad Dallas, Cleber Ten Caten May 2025

Linking Geographic Distribution And Niche Through Estimation Of Niche Density, Tad Dallas, Cleber Ten Caten

Faculty Publications

  1. The availability of suitable niche space constrains where species can occur geographically. This tie between niche space and geographic space is crucial when estimating species geographic distributions in a changing climate. However, specific combinations of climatic conditions may be overrepresented in geographic space, highlighting the potential disconnect between climatic niche area and geographic range size.
  2. We develop a niche density estimator that accounts for the geographic availability of climatic niche space, relate this to traditional estimates of niche area and explore how these niche estimates are related to species geographic range size.
  3. To do this, we use data on over …

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

As climate-related extreme events intensify across the globe, governments, practitioners, and communities have focused on reducing vulnerability and building resilience. However, debates persist about the validity, differences, and similarities between social vulnerability and resilience indices. This study combines the Social Vulnerability Index (SoVI) (26 indicators) and the Baseline Resilience Indicators for Communities (BRIC) (52 indicators) to assess the Portland Metro region using ACS (2016–2020) and 2020 Census data. Through hotspot analysis, Pearson’s correlation, and linear regression, we identify key drivers as well as areas of convergence and divergence between the two indices. Results show a strong overlap between SoVI and …

Investigating The Association Between Metabolically Healthy And Metabolically Unhealthy Obesity With Disease, Colleen Marie Cohick May 2025

Investigating The Association Between Metabolically Healthy And Metabolically Unhealthy Obesity With Disease, Colleen Marie Cohick

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Obesity is a global health concern, affecting individuals of all ages and ethnicities worldwide. A key factor in health concerns related to obesity is metabolic health: Obese individuals are either metabolically healthy obese or metabolically unhealthy obese, leading to different degrees of risk for cardiovascular disease and diabetes.. There is a lack of comprehensive research examining the association between metabolic health status among obese individuals and kidney, liver, and stomach diseases. This quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted to examine whether metabolic health status is a significant predictor of kidney, liver, and stomach diseases among obese individuals when lifestyle is a …

Could Policy Replication Improve Maternal And Infant Mortality In Mississippi? Perceptions Of Healthcare Workers, Allison G. Holland May 2025

Could Policy Replication Improve Maternal And Infant Mortality In Mississippi? Perceptions Of Healthcare Workers, Allison G. Holland

Honors Theses

Despite medical advancements and policy reform, rates of maternal and infant mortality remain disproportionately high in various regions of the United States. The state of Mississippi consistently yields some of the highest rates of both infant and maternal mortality rates nationally. In the past decade, California has developed a series of initiatives and policies to combat rates of maternal and infant mortality across the state. Through state-level policy efforts such as the Maternal Quality Care Collaborative and Mandated Paid Maternity Leave, California consistently leads the nation with the lowest rates of maternal mortality. Initiatives such as the Black Infant Health …

Bridging The Justice Gap: Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic At North Mississippi Rural Legal Services, Emma-Kathryn Bond May 2025

Bridging The Justice Gap: Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic At North Mississippi Rural Legal Services, Emma-Kathryn Bond

Honors Theses

Over the course of two years, I spent more than 130 hours completing on-the- ground volunteer work with the Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC), a clinic within North Mississippi Rural Legal Services that provides free legal assistance to individuals navigating disputes with the IRS. While the Sixth Amendment guarantees legal representation in criminal cases, no such guarantee exists for civil matters such as tax disputes, housing instability, or loss of public benefits. Clinics like LITC fill a crucial gap by offering support in areas that are often overlooked, such as tax law, where clients risk audits, wage garnishments, and court proceedings …

Resort Development In The Venezuelan Central Littoral: The Case Of Naiguata, Jesus Soto May 2025

Resort Development In The Venezuelan Central Littoral: The Case Of Naiguata, Jesus Soto

The Geographical Bulletin

Naiguata is a small coastal town in the Federal District of Venezuela some 24 miles from Caracas (Map 1). Because of this proximity to Caracas, land use patterns have been significantly affected in recent decades by resort development. Accelerated growth of the Metropolitan Area of Caracas has created a need for recreational facilities away from the congestion of the capital.' Naiguata has satisfied that need to some extent, but, for several reasons, future growth and expansion are limited. The town is located on a narrow peninsular-like site hemmed in between the steep flanks of the Coastal Range mountains and the …

Land Alienation In Houston County, Minnesota: Preferences In Land Selection, Charles E. Dingman May 2025

Land Alienation In Houston County, Minnesota: Preferences In Land Selection, Charles E. Dingman

The Geographical Bulletin

Geographers by and large have failed to make very effective or extensive use of the information available in the Tract Books of the General Land Office, which provide evidence of the selection of lands in the public land states of the United States: The Tract Books show the date of entry for each claim, the name of the transferee, and the nature of the transaction for each plot of land alienated from public domain. This case study of Houston County, Minnesota will illustrate the use of these records to investigate initial land evaluations: Dates of alienation can reveal the precise …

The Measurement Of Perception And Attitudes Toward Industry, Raymond Hubbard May 2025

The Measurement Of Perception And Attitudes Toward Industry, Raymond Hubbard

The Geographical Bulletin

A recent trend in various fields of human geography has been the advocation and incorporation of some of the psychologist's powerful behavioral postulates in order to explain human behavior and its possible spatial implications: This has arisen, in part, from the failure of normative and/or deterministic models to fully account for such patterns of behavior. At present, this behavioral approach to the study of geographical problems is still very much in its infancy and is characterized by a willingness to experiment with diverse techniques which were formerly considered to be foreign to the discipline, for example, note the approaches of …

The Economic Geography Of The Production Of A Can-Opener, Richard A. Huck May 2025

The Economic Geography Of The Production Of A Can-Opener, Richard A. Huck

The Geographical Bulletin

This paper is designed primarily to show the interaction involved among thirty-one centers (Map 1 and Table 1) in the manufacture of one product, a deluxe electric can-opener. This is approached through the problem of transportation in relation to distance between the parts' supplying centers and St. Louis, the site of assembly. The appliance with which this paper deals is a combination "Domestic Electric Can-opener, Knife and Scissors Sharpener," Figure 1: In 1969, over ninety thousand of the can openers were manufactured to retail at $21.99 each

The Geographical Bulletin

It is a pleasure to present several well-done student papers in this issue. Mr. Rohe has presented a fine historical geography representative of the lumbering days of the Upper-Lake States. It is a study of a region which has presented many American Geographers with rich field experiences. Mr. Hubbard's paper deals with "perception"-one of the frontiers of geographic research. The areal implications of perception analysis shou Id give us considerable insight into regional problems. Hubbard's paper is a further step toward understanding of how and why we do things. Mr. Huck and Mr. Soto have papers in the realm of …

The Landscape And The Era Of Lumbering In Northeastern Wisconsin, Rand E. Rohe May 2025

The Landscape And The Era Of Lumbering In Northeastern Wisconsin, Rand E. Rohe

The Geographical Bulletin

An understanding of the totality of the present landscape of northern Wisconsin requires an investigation of its era of primary exploitation. Wisconsin at one time led the nation in lumber production, and for forty years the industry dominated the commercial and industrial activities of the state. Although a passing phase of history, lumbering left a conspicuous mark on the geography of Wisconsin. The process of exploitation produced elements and patterns that shaped and molded the character of the present landscape. By its nature, the contemporary landscape asks the degree of influence the lumber industry had in its formation. The answer …

Perspectives On The Sloven Ian Republic Of Yugoslavia, David E. Kromm

The Geographical Bulletin

I would like to explore with you the Socialist Republic of Slovenia, the northernmost province of Yugoslavia. In developing a perspective on Slovenia, I will emphasize the cultural and economic distinctiveness of the region in order to distinguish this nation from the rest of the Yugoslav state. Yugoslavia is a relatively new country in Europe, being established in 1918 following the World War I disintegration of the extensive Habsburg and Ottoman Empires. At first the young state called itself the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in recognition of the separate identities of its three major ethnic groups. Stressing …

Homicide And Suicide In Latin America And Europe: A Spatial Interpretation, Kenneth G. Thompson May 2025

Homicide And Suicide In Latin America And Europe: A Spatial Interpretation, Kenneth G. Thompson

The Geographical Bulletin

To an increasing extent geographers are becoming interested in spatial variation of crime because criminal patterns in many cases tend to mirror other social and cultural characteristics. The task of analyzing spatial distribution of crime is made formidable, however, because many times data are woefully inadequate, especially on a world basis. Thedearth of international criminal statistics is reflected in the fact that not one single world map showing criminal patterns was available for reference in this study. To be sure, data exist. But many of them cannot be used for comparative purposes because of regional differences in both definitions and …

The Future Of Gamma Theta Upsilon, Theodore R. Speigner

The Geographical Bulletin

In order for Gamma Theta Upsilon I nternational Honorary Geographical Society to achieve its destiny, we must become aware of necessary changes in our Society's activities, programs and projects which spell progress and success in chapters on college campuses throughout this nation. The Administration of Gamma Theta Upsilon must begin to playa different role. It is not enough for us to meet once or twice a year and pass motions and resolutions. We must become concerned about the welfare of local chapters and the young Gamma Thetans. Our programs and interests must involve representatives from local chapters more and more. …

In this issue there are several papers of note. Dr. Pillsbury and Dr. Kromm have had their papers published which were presented at the G.T.U. sessions held in conjunction with the N.C.G.E. and A.A.G. meetings. Three other papers indicate two dimensions of activities. In two there is evidence of considerable individual scholarly work and the continuation of a time honored solitary approach to study. The other is the blending of individual efforts into a common goal-the pursuit of information about a timely topic. All are worthy efforts. Finally, President Speigner has made a call to all members of Gamma Theta …

Images Of Appalachia, Richard Pillsbury May 2025

Images Of Appalachia, Richard Pillsbury

The Geographical Bulletin

Appalachia is one of those regional names which brings instant images to almost all of us. To some the term conjures the rolling hills of the Allegheny Plateau and colored October leaves turning in the afternoon sun, to others it surfates the faces and looks of the miners standing, waiting, knowing the fate of comrades caught inside one of the many mine disasters so characteristic of the region. All of us have images like these of the places that we know and have visited lying uncatalogued in our minds to be drawn to consciousness when prodded by the people and …

Diamond In The Rough: Unearthing Botswana's Sources Of Political Legitimacy, Angela Gapa May 2025

Diamond In The Rough: Unearthing Botswana's Sources Of Political Legitimacy, Angela Gapa

Journal of African Policy Studies

Botswana has garnered analytic attention in the past few decades as Africa's developmental miracle. Being among the poorest countries in the world upon its independence in 1966, it catapulted itself to one of the fastest growing economies in the world for a period of four decades. What made the Botswana experience all the more outstanding, was that within the context of its company among other non-renewable natural resource dependent countries, it stood as an anomaly. This is because these resource endowed countries generally suffered or were susceptible to the "resource curse." This paper identifies legitimacy as having important value in …

Africa's Economic Growth And Development Dilemma: Dysfunctional Leadership, Oluwole Owoye, Olugbenga A. Onafowora May 2025

Africa's Economic Growth And Development Dilemma: Dysfunctional Leadership, Oluwole Owoye, Olugbenga A. Onafowora

Journal of African Policy Studies

This paper examines the impact of leadership on economic growth and development in all African countries. The historical records of leadership changes in African countries since independence show a dichotomous pattern. In 23 countries, the changes in leadership occurred more frequently, which indicated a "scramble" for leadership. In 30 countries, the changes in leadership were infrequent, which fit the "strongman-sit-tight" leadership syndrome. Based on the historical data of leadership changes, we construct the ideal leadership bounds for each country and compute the indices of dysfunctional leadership. We find that the index is positive in countries with more frequent leadership changes …

Sylvia J. Wynter’S Concept Of The Over-Representation Of Man And Its Relevance To Gender And Global Development In The 21st Century, Tina Renier May 2025

Sylvia J. Wynter’S Concept Of The Over-Representation Of Man And Its Relevance To Gender And Global Development In The 21st Century, Tina Renier

Journal of International Women's Studies

This essay critically examines Sylvia J. Wynter’s (2003) concept of the “overrepresentation of Man” (p. 263) and its profound implications for gender and global development in the 21st century. I examine Wynter’s critique of “Man” as the universal subject of knowledge and power through a Caribbean-transnational, decolonial, and intersectional feminist lens. My reflection challenges the historical reduction of the human experience to a singular, patriarchal notion and highlights the voices and contributions of previously excluded marginalized voices and women scholar-activists. In the context of global development, the overrepresentation of Man undergirds the continued dominance of Western, patriarchal ideologies that shape …

Rewriting Histories: The Experiences Of Pioneering Egyptian Women Architects In The Socio-Political Context Of The Nasser Era, Mai M. Aboul-Dahab, Yasser M. Moustafa, Yasser M. Mansour May 2025

Rewriting Histories: The Experiences Of Pioneering Egyptian Women Architects In The Socio-Political Context Of The Nasser Era, Mai M. Aboul-Dahab, Yasser M. Moustafa, Yasser M. Mansour

Journal of International Women's Studies

The history of modern architecture has particularly emphasized the roles of male architects with little mention of women architects. Since women’s contributions have often been overlooked, feminist scholars worldwide have aimed to showcase women’s history in the architectural profession over the past several years. However, there is still a lack of scholarship on the historical experiences and contributions of women architects in the Middle East, particularly Egypt. This research aims to address this gap in historiography by focusing on the first women architects in Egypt during the Nasser era. As such, the study utilizes archival sources and examines various architecture …

Perspectives In Wine Consumption, John Kistner

The Geographical Bulletin

Topological space involves relationships between parts of a single object or between an object and its immediate environment, continuously and independent of distances (Figures 3 and 4). Since a collection of elements in space may be exploded or contracted at will, conserving neither straight lines, distances nor directions, topological concepts do not lead to the construction of a stable system which relates components to one another, nor to a system of fixed relations between elements and space.2 Students who perceive spatial relationships with a topological perspective, often are unable to perform well in those tasks associated with quantitative or qualitative …
