Geography In Service To The Community, Albert Redsun
Geography In Service To The Community, Albert Redsun
The Geographical Bulletin
For many years geographers spent much of their professional efforts describing the landscape and man's activities. These were noteworthy, necessary, and valuable contributions. As we grew (just as all disciplines do) we searched for those meaningful relationships of man and land. We still search. Many relationships are obvious. Many that will be discovered in the future will someday be obvious. It is clear that we will need the continuing quest by researchers in our field. Researchers now seek to predict. The introduction of quantification techniques has allowed for more refined analysis and prediction. As researchers open more and more doors …

Hops In The United States, Edgar M. Hadley
Hops In The United States, Edgar M. Hadley
The Geographical Bulletin
For more than a thousand years the virtue of the hop has been recorded, and it is possible that hops have been cultivated since prehistoric times. More than five hundred years have passed since the domesticated hops were brewed in middle Europe, but wild hops were used much earlier, and are brewed in Syria even today. Hops were introduced to England in the wild, but much later came into prominence after being introduced into Kent by Flemish immigrants about 15241.

Perhaps no other job affords the opportunity to influence the lives and minds of the younger generation than does teaching. As students reminisce, nearly everyone will recall a favorite professor and cite examples or instances in which his life was in some way influenced by his teachings or advice. In student circles at North Carolina Central University, the name of Dr. Theodore H. Speigner has often been brought up in this regard. Dr. Speigner has earned the distinction of being a great educator throughout the entire state of North Carolina as well as on the North Carolina Central University Campus. …

Land Use Bordering The Calumet River And Lake Calumet In Chicago, Illinois, William D. Curran
Land Use Bordering The Calumet River And Lake Calumet In Chicago, Illinois, William D. Curran
The Geographical Bulletin
The Calumet River-Lake Calumet area within the City of Chicago, Illinois comprises a complexity of manufacturing, transportation, service, and storage facilities at a magnitude rarely found other than in coastal port locations. The area contains a major portion of the Calumet district's heavy basic industries and constitutes the principal port area of metropolitan Chicago. The historical developments of the industrial and port activities in the area have been ably chronicled by Mayer' and Appleton' and do not bear repeating here. The objectives of this paper are to provide a detailed description and evaluation of the forty-nine sites bordering on the …
On The Perils Of Perceiving Perception, James E. Landing
On The Perils Of Perceiving Perception, James E. Landing
The Geographical Bulletin
The emergence of man's perception of his environment within the discipline of geography as a suitable topic of pursuit is a most wholesome development. The recently articulated views of Saarinen through the publications of the Commission on College Geography provide an admirable springboard for those interested in pursuing the topic and obtaining an overview of what has already been pursued.' But geography teachers have, for years, been intuitively doing the same thing by discovering through their classroom contacts the correct and incorrect perceptions of students and teaching concepts based upon this knowledge. Although few of these have been conducted as …
Australia An Dits Outback, Lewis Deitch
Australia An Dits Outback, Lewis Deitch
The Geographical Bulletin
So states Australian poet A. D. Hope as he vividly describes the land "Down Under.'" It is a continent of widespread aridity whose burnt red and brown colors predominate over much of the landscape. The Continent contains 2,941,526 square miles (with Tasmania, the island state, the Commonwealth comprises an area of 2,967,909 square miles): By comparison, Australia is slightly smaller than the 48 contiguous United States, and roughly the same latitudinal and longitudinal dimensions. In contrast however, the Australian continent is largely uninhabited or at best sparsely settled. The population (at the 1966 Census) of 11,550,4623 is primarily centered in …

Most of my professional geographer acquaintances have expressed to me at one time or another that they feel they were brought into the field of geography largely as a result of one man's influence. It is presumed that most of us came into the field that way and my experience is no exception. After stumbling through a freshman year in college in 1947, with no particular professional goal in mind and sti ll looking for that one thing which would show me the direction I wanted to go for my life, I enrolled in a geography class which was being …
Water Sourcesst. Thomas And St. John,American Virgin Islands, Ann Lundelius
Water Sourcesst. Thomas And St. John,American Virgin Islands, Ann Lundelius
The Geographical Bulletin
The vital word in Saint Thomas and Saint John is water. Because of the lack of it in the past, the population remained low. With new desa linization techniques, the islands can support both a greater local as well as tourist population. The basic problem stems from the fact that the islands are volcanic in structure (Figure one) without water storage pockets. Also, there are no fresh water rivers. The populace has had to depend on a cistern method of gathering rainwater, but this method was only fairly dependable as sometimes it rains for days straight, and other times it …
Forest Distribution And Soil Texture Along The Valparaiso Moraine In Northwestern Indiana, Wallace Elton
Forest Distribution And Soil Texture Along The Valparaiso Moraine In Northwestern Indiana, Wallace Elton
The Geographical Bulletin
An anomalous pattern of high warm-season precipitation centered on the city of La Porte, Indiana, has recently been described in the literature.' The presence of this pattern was attributed to rainfall augmentation as a result of atmospheric pollution by the heavy industrial complex in the vicinity of Gary, Indiana (Figure one). Other natural gradients in addition to that of rainfall exist in the La Porte area, however, and possibly suggest that the former pattern has had a longer-term existence. The present study was part of a broader investigation designed to examine biogeographical patterns which might reflect on the degree of …

Changing Orientations:Elements Of New Zealand'spolitical Geography, David B. Knight
The Geographical Bulletin
New Zealand's economic, political, cultural, ties and orientations have changed through time. This paper briefly examines the historical development of these orientations as influenced by Briti sh and Pacific-rimland considerations and notes some of the problems now faced by New Zealand as it readjusts to its new and conflicting orientations.' Three factors have historically dominated new Zealand's external orientations-geographical setting in the Southwest Pacific, membership in the Briti sh Empire and subsequently the Commonwealth of Nations, and the country' s commercial ized pastoral economy. Without doubt, all of these factors are interwoven and are each in themselves complex with far …

Today revolutionary deeds and ideas are affecting much of the world. Hence changes come to existing cultures and ways of li fe, transformations of special consequence because they also bring fundamental modifications in man's relationship to his environment. Assuming these trends are inevitable, current mosaics of land and life are destined to yield to new forces. And, just possibly, the most dramatic chapters of man ' s d evelopment are presently being recorded with the revolutionary modification of more traditional societies. What man does with the land he occupies largely depends on his cultural view of its use. l Human …

My Reminiscencesconcerned Withamerican Geography(, Eugene Van Cleef
The Geographical Bulletin
When it was suggested I reminisce about American geography I was delighted to grasp the opportunity, for nothing pleases the ego more of one who has lived a long time than to discourse upon the events of his youth. The situation is especially gratifying when one ca n cast his words of wisdom upon a captive audience. The limitations of time made it seem advisable to record my thoughts. At best an attempt to squeeze into a 25- minute period, a story which covers several decades is not only audacious but probably doomed to failure. I trust you will forgive …

W ith this issue Gamma Theta Upsilon initiates the publication of its periodical, Th e Geographical Bulletin. It is with great anticipation that we set forth on this venture. Our aim is to supply an outlet for undergraduate and graduate students who normally do not have publication avenues easily accessible. We intend to give the highest priority to student publications for we feel they deserve space, and we further feel that they have things to offer which will be of value to the profession of geography. It is the editorial policy of The Geographical Bulletin to publish those things which …

The Relevancy Of Gamma Theta Upsilon, David W. Lantis
The Geographical Bulletin
The typical freshman seems to understand what geography is, even though his academic exposure on the pre-college level has often been distressingly limited. It seems quite easy for a good college instructor to attract superior students into the discipline by revealing the latitude of geography and its multiple relationships to the totality of contemporary human knowledge
An Autoethnography Of My Experience Navigating The United States Educational System As An Immigrant: Intercultural Communication Challenges And Cultural Asynchronization, Anuti Ngangana
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to share experiences as an immigrant student and answer the following question: What does my personal life history reveal about the importance of intercultural communication in the U.S. educational system? Immigrants leave their countries of origin and migrate to the United States for various reasons. Many are traumatized when they enter the country due to civil unrest in their native countries. Immigrants arrive with their children, who join a school system that is generally unprepared to meet their needs. In order to document immigrant experiences, the researcher utilized an autoethnographic approach using counter-storytelling from …

Temporal Assessment Of Fish Communities In A South Central Plains Ecoregion Watershed, Tara L. Schnelting
ATU Theses and Dissertations 2021 - Present
Among South Central Plains ecoregion fish communities, there is limited knowledge of the importance of headwaters yet this information is needed to understand their role in fish communities. I addressed this gap by assessing seasonal changes in fish communities in headwater streams of the Moro Creek watershed, Arkansas. I conducted two studies pertaining to temporal fish community assessments: (i) utilize multi-season, community occupancy models to estimate μ (species probability), Ω (community occupancy mean), and p (detection probability) and (ii) utilize beta diversity (β) analyses to address the diversity across different scales in the headwaters of the Moro Creek …

From Privilege To Purpose: The Role Of Entrepreneurial Educators In Building Good Lives Within Planetary Boundaries For All, Lucia Walsh, Olivia Freeman
Conference papers
Questions We Care About: The question we care about is: How can we recognise and leverage our privilege and relational power to drive efforts in entrepreneurship education responsibly to foster a systemic change that will support a good life within planetary boundaries for all? Entrepreneurship is about creating value and by reframing what ‘value’ means, we can begin to shift our own mindsets and those of our students. Adopting regenerative approaches that focus on achieving good lives for all within planetary boundaries (Raworth, 2017) can transform business-as-usual. We posit that a crucial first step is to turn inward, developing awareness …

Creative Expression Through Worldbuilding: A Study On The Connections Between Literature And Music Through Analysis Of Brandon Sanderson's The Stormlight Archive, Lauralei S. Palmer
Honors Theses
This thesis examines the worldbuilding connections visible throughout fantasy literature and musical works. Though their tools seem different, authors, composers, and performers use equivalent techniques to draw in their audiences and produce an immersive, emotional experience. This research focuses on American author Brandon Sanderson’s highly detailed worldbuilding in his epic fantasy series, The Stormlight Archive. The Stormlight Archive exhibits the three pillars of worldbuilding: completeness, invention, and consistency. This research also examines Franz Liszt’s Les Préludes, a symphonic poem based on Alfonse Lamartine’s poem, Ode. Finally, this thesis culminates in the fusion of literary and musical worldbuilding in description …

Weathering The Storm: Examining Mississippi’S Disaster Recovery For Diverse Economic Groups, Ethan C. Robertson
Honors Theses
This study investigates the systemic disparities in disaster recovery resource allocation in Mississippi, with a particular focus on the challenges faced by underprivileged communities. Guided by the central research question—how can we make disaster recovery more equitable?—this research critically examines whether current disaster recovery policy in Mississippi is equitable and how effectively it addresses the needs of diverse economic groups. The current disaster recovery model often fails to address the unique needs of socio-economically vulnerable populations, hindering their ability to recover effectively. Through case studies of Hurricane Katrina (2005), the Mississippi River Flooding (2011), and undeclared tornadoes in December 2022, …
Felony Offenders' Perceptions Of Effective Rehabilitation And Reintegration Programs In Northern Colorado, Burnes Marjorie
Felony Offenders' Perceptions Of Effective Rehabilitation And Reintegration Programs In Northern Colorado, Burnes Marjorie
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Criminal justice reform programs in the U.S. have grown and developed as studies have found that older methods of criminal punishment are ineffective in terms of reducing the likelihood of an inmate being reincarcerated after release, referred to as “recidivism.” With the growth of these reforms, ground-breaking systems have been integrated into prisons in the form of rehabilitation and reintegration programs which serve to reduce recidivism. However, with the development of numerous new unique and powerful programs, determining which rehabilitation and reintegration programs are most effective in reducing recidivism in felony offenders in the U.S. is critical. Past research …

Storytelling: A Natural Mnemonic, Hailey Stephens
Honors Theses
The present study explored the effectiveness of storytelling as a teaching method in enhancing memory performance for educational material compared to traditional lecture-based instruction. Memory plays a crucial role in learning, and effective teaching strategies should facilitate information encoding, retention, and retrieval. Storytelling, an ancient yet often overlooked pedagogical tool, has been shown to engage students emotionally and cognitively, making presented content more memorable. In the present study, participants were randomly assigned to either a storytelling-based instruction group or a traditional lecture group. Both groups received instruction on the ASSURE Model and were tested immediately after the lesson and again …
