Dipl 2109 Aa Institutions Of Global Governance, Purnaka L. De Silva Phd
Diplomacy Syllabi
The focus and aim of this Course – DIPL 2109: Institutions of Global Governance – is to understand the concept of Global Governance from the vantage point of International Organizations. Global governance, central to international relations, refers to the loose framework of global regulation – both institutional and normative – that constrains conduct and attempts to maintain order.
When we speak of order, we need to specify order for whom – states, peoples, groups, or individuals. Order may denote any regular or discernible pattern of relationships that are stable over time or may additionally refer to a condition that …

Joint Control On Stream Direction And Pothole Axis Formation In The Lower Chesapeake Group, Southeastern King William County, Virginia, Amy E. Edwards
Joint Control On Stream Direction And Pothole Axis Formation In The Lower Chesapeake Group, Southeastern King William County, Virginia, Amy E. Edwards
Virginia Journal of Science
Multiple heavy rain events in the last few decades, three in particular: Hurricane Isabel (2003), Tropical Depression Gaston (2004), and Hurricane Irene (2011), produced noteworthy downcutting of numerous streams in two adjacent watersheds in the Virginia Coastal Plain in southeastern King William County, Virginia. The downcutting has exposed joint sets in the Chesapeake Group clays in streambeds with yellowish gray clay, as well as a series of potholes in a streambed with a blueish gray clay. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that joints in the streambeds in these two watersheds control stream direction and pothole …

Printz Award Titles In Mississippi Public Libraries: A Collection Analysis, Ally Watkins, Harley Rogers, Melissa Dennis
The Southeastern Librarian
The Michael L. Printz Award is presented annually by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) to recognize one book as the Printz Award winner and up to four books as Honor books. In areas of rapid growth like young adult (YA) publishing, librarians may add books recognized by an award as part of their collection development practice. The number of Printz Award winner and Honor books in a Mississippi library’s holdings can be viewed as a standard to see if Mississippi is falling behind or keeping up with trends in young adult publishing. Building on research completed for an …
Designing Portugal’S Voluntary Carbon Market: Insights From Key Stakeholders, Mahika Shergill
Designing Portugal’S Voluntary Carbon Market: Insights From Key Stakeholders, Mahika Shergill
Portugal: Sustainability and Environmental Justice
This project examines the design, integrity, and early implementation challenges of Portugal’s newly established Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM), created through Decree-Law 4/2024 as part of the country’s broader climate-mitigation strategy. The objective of the study is to evaluate whether the market’s regulatory architecture—particularly its treatment of additionality, permanence, methodologies, and co-benefit mechanisms—positions it to function as a credible and viable national carbon-governance instrument. The analysis draws on a mixed-methods approach combining legal and policy review with four semi-structured interviews conducted with policymakers, methodological designers, ecological practitioners, and environmental-law specialists. These interviews reveal that Portugal’s VCM is characterized by strong integrity …

Motives And Community Energy: What Determines Participation In The U.S. And E.U., Belinda Litchtenfeld
Portugal: Sustainability and Environmental Justice
The shift to renewable energies has become a critical means of addressing the climate crisis. Community Energy (CE) has emerged as a ‘bottom-up’ transition to achieve decarbonization within a localized environment. The aim of this paper is to compare the motivations and framings of rural CE projects in the United States and European Union. The paper will compare the case of Loess Wind Farm, located in Rock Port, Missouri, with the Cedillo Solar Community in Caceres, Spain to determine how sociotechnical visions are shaped by the challenges facing communities. The elements of sociotechnical visions- meanings, knowings, doings, and organizings- as …
Urban Green Spaces, Sustainability Discourse, And Environmental Inequality In Agadir, Morocco, Julia Card
Urban Green Spaces, Sustainability Discourse, And Environmental Inequality In Agadir, Morocco, Julia Card
Morocco: Human Rights, Social Justice, and Cultural Transformation
As Moroccan cities experience rising temperatures, increased drought, and rapid urban development, urban green spaces have become central to sustainability and climate adaptation agendas. However, the social, ecological, and political implications of urban greening remain unevenly examined in semi-arid contexts. This paper investigates how green spaces are envisioned, implemented, and experienced in Agadir, a coastal city shaped by colonial planning legacies, post-earthquake reconstruction, water scarcity, and event-driven redevelopment. Using a qualitative methodology combining a visual content analysis of the 2022–2027 Agadir Communal Action Plan with semi-structured interviews with local experts in agronomy, landscape architecture, geography, and regional planning, this study …

Size Matters: Linkage Between Bromeliad Traits And The Spider Communities They Host In A Disturbed Habitat, Alesandra Fairchild
Size Matters: Linkage Between Bromeliad Traits And The Spider Communities They Host In A Disturbed Habitat, Alesandra Fairchild
Ecuador: Comparative Ecology and Conservation
Bromeliads are a plant group that have been praised for their ability to create unique microhabitats, hosting an abundant and diverse faunal community due to their unique structural characteristics. Unfortunately, as deforestation rates rise, this plant group is at risk of decreasing in both abundance and diversity, which puts their associated organisms at risk of losing essential habitat (e.g. spiders). In this study, the effect of bromeliad structural characteristics and forest disturbance was assessed in a mature and secondary forest by classifying bromeliad abundance by forest type, characterizing forest structure, and by analyzing spider abundance and diversity based on these …

Do Financial Concerns Make Workers Less Productive?, Dua Khowaja
2025 Fall Honors Capstones Projects - Archive
Financial stress does not just affect people’s finances; it can change the way individuals behave. This project asks whether short-term financial difficulty damages worker performance or if alleviating it improves focus and accuracy. Using data from a field experiment in rural India, this study examine how labor payment timing variability is related to workers' productivity and error rates. The study randomized payment dates across a sample of employees, so that employees paid early can be compared to employees paid on standard or later dates. It investigates whether subsidy of payments relieves stress and enhances task performance by minimizing stress, enhancing …

It Just Means More: The Cultural Bond Between The South And Sec Football, Ryan Stinson
Senior Theses
With the success of programs like Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech in the early 1900s, college football quickly became means of establishing Southern superiority over the northern U.S. Their success continued into the 20th and 21st centuries with the creation and rise of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). During and prior to the existence of the SEC, rivalries, traditions, and pageantry developed and thrived in communities across the southeast. These aspects created a unique environment that drew in fans of college football across the region. This resulted in a unique bond between fan, university, team, and community that has thrived within all …

Senior Theses
This study examines the role of Soda City Market in the economic and social revitalization of Columbia, South Carolina’s Main Street district. Since relocating downtown in 2012, the market has evolved from a small farmers market into a major cultural and entrepreneurial hub attracting more than 300,000 visitors annually. To evaluate its impact, the study integrates two primary methods: a vendor survey capturing business characteristics and an IMPLAN input–output model estimating the market’s economic effects within Richland County. Survey results from 25 vendors reveal a diverse and culturally representative business community in which Soda City serves as both an incubator …

Research Guide To Womanist Literature: Historical, Anticolonial, And Fictional Perspectives, Apoliana Da Conceicao Dos Santos
FIRE Fund Bibliographies
This bibliography was compiled for both research and teaching purposes, organized into three thematic categories reflecting a hemispheric, anticolonial, and womanist approach to knowledge production. The collection centers Black, Afro-Latin American, and feminist voices, offering alternative epistemologies that challenge Eurocentric, patriarchal, and colonial frameworks commonly reproduced in academic syllabi. It invites professors and students across disciplines to engage with scholarship and storytelling that foreground women's histories, theories, and creative expressions.
The first category, Historical Womanist Literature, examines testimonies, resistance, kinship, and survival of Black women under slavery and colonial rule across the Atlantic world, drawing extensively from histories of gendered …

Native Plants And Water Quality At Coastal Carolina University, Sarah M. Limmer
Native Plants And Water Quality At Coastal Carolina University, Sarah M. Limmer
Honors Theses
Native riparian vegetation is an extremely important part of the natural world as its adaptation to the local environment and climate offers an increased array of ecosystem services, including soil stabilization and water filtration. Therefore, while not the only element, native plants are a key regulator of water quality. This study used quantitative and qualitative analysis methods to determine how the presence or lack thereof of native vegetation affects water quality in both landscaped ponds and natural wetlands on Coastal Carolina University’s campus. It was concluded that there is a slight correlation between the two variables, mainly being in that …
甲骨文“本”字試解, Qingyu Du
甲骨文“本”字試解, Qingyu Du
嶺南學報 Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies
At present, there are various viewpoints about the “本” character Oracle Bone Inscription, such as the interpretation of “chui 垂”, “zhui 叕”, and “gua 瓜”, these viewpoints have some shortcomings in terms of form and example interpretation. This paper analyzes the form characteristics of “本” and believes that this character should be the initial form of “ben 本”. In related oracle inscriptions, it should be understood as the torso or lower part of a human sacrifice, it may be related to the dismemberment or beheading punishment in the Shang Dynasty.

The Future Of Virtual Proceedings In The Federal Courts, Jeremy Fogel, Mary S. Hoopes
The Future Of Virtual Proceedings In The Federal Courts, Jeremy Fogel, Mary S. Hoopes
Indiana Law Journal
The federal courts are notoriously hesitant to modify their procedures and policies. Much of this “small c” conservatism is driven by a concern that their rules be “trans-substantive” and suited to a wide range of circumstances. For years, they stubbornly resisted allowing remote proceedings and similar uses of technology in the courtroom because of concerns that permitting them could affect the quality of lawyering and decision-making, compromise the safety of jurors and witnesses, and diminish the public’s perception of the courts. The COVID-19 pandemic abruptly changed this, forcing judges to alter radically the way they conducted proceedings.
Nearly five years …
The Siren Song Of Territoriality, Robin J. Effron, Alan M. Trammell
The Siren Song Of Territoriality, Robin J. Effron, Alan M. Trammell
Indiana Law Journal
Territoriality—the theory that a state’s physical borders determine its power and sovereignty—boasts a long, venerable history. For centuries, it served as the dominant political theory for myriad ideas. It defined a wide range of doctrines, including personal jurisdiction, choice of law, and prescriptive jurisdiction. By the middle of the twentieth century, though, this rigid territoriality no longer described or responded to the challenges of a society that had grown increasingly mobile and interconnected. Courts replaced inflexible territorial theories with more functional theories rooted in fairness and state regulatory interests.
In recent years, territoriality has seen a curious resurgence. The Supreme …
Examining The Spatial Inequities Of Urban Heat Islands And Tree Canopy In Conway, Sc, Patrick W. Da Silva
Examining The Spatial Inequities Of Urban Heat Islands And Tree Canopy In Conway, Sc, Patrick W. Da Silva
Honors Theses
This study examines spatial inequities in urban heat island (UHI) effects and urban tree canopy (UTC) distribution in Conway, South Carolina, through an interdisciplinary environmental justice framework. Integrating qualitative field observations, quantitative temperature measurements, and geospatial analysis using GIS and remote sensing techniques, the research evaluates how land surface characteristics and vegetation influence localized temperature variation across eight representative sites, including residential neighborhoods and downtown streetscapes. Results demonstrate a consistent relationship between reduced tree canopy cover, increased land surface temperatures, and elevated ambient temperatures. Areas with limited vegetation—particularly lower-income public housing communities—experienced the highest thermal burdens, while locations with established …
Analyzing Attitudes On Social Welfare: Partisanship Versus Self-Interest, Jack D. Ryder
Analyzing Attitudes On Social Welfare: Partisanship Versus Self-Interest, Jack D. Ryder
Student Publications
What influences Americans' attitudes on social welfare? Why do some Americans vote seemingly against their interests? Using data from the 2020 National Election Survey, this paper will test hypotheses examining how rurality and Republican partisanship are associated with lower favorability toward social welfare spending. This paper will also analyze the current literature on immigration, locality, and partisanship to see how they shape attitudes toward welfare spending. Overall, the regression models show that Republican partisanship is more correlated with support for social welfare cuts than an individual’s rurality. This study is important for understanding how partisanship shapes attitudes on policy and …

Finding Black Girl Joy: The Lived Experiences Of Rural Black Girls, Tisha Scott-Addison
College of Education
This qualitative study examines the lived experiences of rural Black girls to gain a deeper understanding of how structural inequities manifest in their daily school lives. Grounded in intersectionality theory, the research examined how the convergence of race, gender, age, and geography influences the treatment and perceptions of Black girls within rural school settings. The central research questions guiding the study were: How do rural Black girls describe their experiences with school discipline, adultification, and a sense of belonging, and how do these experiences shape their educational journeys? Twenty Black female students in rural schools participated in semi-structured interviews. Data …
Urban Political Ecology And Informal City: Using The Capabilities Approach In Co-Designing With Slum Communities, Patrick Vance S. Nogoy
Urban Political Ecology And Informal City: Using The Capabilities Approach In Co-Designing With Slum Communities, Patrick Vance S. Nogoy
Philosophy Department Faculty Publications
Slum communities which compose an informal city offer a serious challenge to urban metabolism approaches that promise to be inclusive in confronting environmental injustice. In particular, urban political ecology (UPE) frameworks critically examine power structures and relational dynamics in the environment where objectionable injustices are identified and corrected. However, Holifield (2009) finds UPE limiting as it excludes marginalized communities and other important factors. The main reason Holifield highlights is the dominance of Marxist UPE frameworks that interpret environmental injustices narrowly as results of uneven social power relations and dynamics driven primarily by neo-liberal capitalist behaviors, institutions, and activities. Alternatively, he …
