Rising Poverty And Diversity In Suburbs: Decomposing Population Trends For The Chicago-Joliet-Naperville Metropolitan Area In The 2000s, Fabian Terbeck
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation investigates rising poverty in suburbs in the Chicago-Joliet-Naperville metropolitan area in the 2000s. In that decade, suburbs saw an unprecedented rise in the number of poor and the reasons for this increase are not yet fully understood. Moreover, there are signs that this increase was not only the consequence of the decade's two recessions but of an on-going fundamental neighborhood change and shifting population compositions in metropolitan areas. In this dissertation, I use a combination of decomposition methods to identify the underlying racial, ethnic and socioeconomic dynamics for the increase in suburban poverty. Themes of this dissertation are …
Desegregation Through Entertainment: Rodgers And Hammerstein’S South Pacific As An Instrument Of Military Policy, Leana Sottile
Desegregation Through Entertainment: Rodgers And Hammerstein’S South Pacific As An Instrument Of Military Policy, Leana Sottile
Voces Novae
In the aftermath of the Second World War, the 1949 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical South Pacific became a staple of mainstream popular culture. However, the musical also served a specific function within the American military where its usage by the United Service Organizations and Department of Defense was widespread. This case study examines how South Pacific arguably served a way to ease the blow of desegregation on the military by other means, in this case, entertainment. This was achieved by combining the show’s progressive views on racial tolerance with the prevalent wartime nostalgia and romanticism in the piece. All of …

Nationalistic Massacre Victims Triumph Over Ccp, Nathan Huffine
Voces Novae
Following the Japanese invasion of mainland China, and the subsequent Nanjing Massacre in 1937, Chinese Massacre survivors gained a nationalistic perspective as a result of their lived experiences. Later, these survivors’ nationalistic perspective came in direct conflict with the class-based perspective held by the Chinese Communist Party. This clash in political views helps shed light upon much of the internal and external Chinese historical narrative throughout the mid to late twentieth century.

Control of long‐established invasive species to aid threatened native species presents major logistic and economic challenges. Invasive common carp (Cyprinus carpio ) recently accounted for over 90% of the fish biomass in Utah Lake (Utah, USA), driving many undesired changes to ecosystem structure. Carp control efforts have removed >12,000 tons of carp from the system over 10 yr. However, the impact of recent removal efforts on carp population structure and dynamics remains unclear. We develop an integrated age‐structured population model incorporating carp harvest data with independent standardized monitoring data to evaluate population‐level consequences of the removal effort and evaluate …
The Life History Of Human Foraging: Cross-Cultural And Individual Variation, John Ziker
The Life History Of Human Foraging: Cross-Cultural And Individual Variation, John Ziker
Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Human adaptation depends on the integration of slow life history, complex production skills, and extensive sociality. Refining and testing models of the evolution of human life history and cultural learning benefit from increasingly accurate measurement of knowledge, skills, and rates of production with age. We pursue this goal by inferring hunters’ increases and declines of skill from approximately 23,000 hunting records generated by more than 1800 individuals at 40 locations. The data reveal an average age of peak productivity between 30 and 35 years of age, although high skill is maintained throughout much of adulthood. In addition, there is substantial …

Exploring Teachers’ Understandings Of School-Based Professional Learning In A Tanzanian Secondary School, Rehema J. Mwakabenga,, Sally Elizabeth Hansen Associate Professor, Alison Sewell
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
Teachers can positively engage in professional learning if they are knowledgeable about its processes and the roles they can play in it. However, teachers often lack a clear understanding of what constitutes effective professional learning practices and they are often unsupported to engage in it. This paper reports on part of a larger study that explored Tanzanian teachers’ understandings of professional learning prior to participating in a school-based professional learning (SBPL) model. This teacher-led model of professional learning supported four secondary school teachers to engage in a professional learning inquiry based on the needs of their students. Qualitative research methods, …

Access To Educational Publications And The Copyright Law In Tanzania: Revisiting The Underlying Opposing Interests, Saudin J. Mwakaje
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
In Tanzania, the right to education is guaranteed under the Constitution. For such a right to be effective, easy access to educational publications is a key factor. However, these publications are a subject of copyright protection; hence users must obtain prior permission before use. The copyright law has provisions for free use or fair use, which is intended to allow certain prescribed uses without prior authorization of the author, such as use for educational purposes. In Tanzania, the enactment of the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights (Licensing of Reproduction and Rental Rights) Regulations in 2014 has presented a new legal dynamic …

Survivorship Of The Reintroduced Kihansi Spray Toads Nectophrynoides Asperginis In A Soft Release Experiment At The Kihansi Gorge, Tanzania, Flora John Magige, Nassoro Mohamed
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
The Kihansi Spray Toad (KST) Nectophrynoides asperginis is endemic to the unique wetland habitat surrounding the Kihansi Falls, Tanzania, with which it was associated. The species was declared extinct in the wild in 2009 by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), following the loss of its unique habitat due to the diversion of the Kihansi River for hydropower production. This study is an initial attempt to determine the survivorship and possible sources of mortality of newborn and adult KSTs placed in cages in their original habitat in the Upper Spray Wetland (USW) and Lower Spray Wetland (LSW) areas. …
Liberalizing Democracy: Property, Citizenship, And The Constrained Promise Of Self-Governing Houseless Communities, Stephen Przybylinski
Liberalizing Democracy: Property, Citizenship, And The Constrained Promise Of Self-Governing Houseless Communities, Stephen Przybylinski
Dissertations - ALL
As cities in the U.S. continue to experience increases in unsheltered houselessness, houseless encampments are becoming far more common throughout urban landscapes. Along with the increase of encampments there has been new rights-claims by houseless communities, claims for rights to organize communities on public and private properties. As a result, cities are beginning to sanction organized encampments as a strategy for managing the current crisis of houselessness. Based on a combination of qualitative methods, this dissertation analyzes the ways in which property affects the lives of houseless people residing in self-governing encampments in Portland, Oregon. It does so by drawing …
The Impact Of Fire On Soil Characteristics In The Maritime Forests On Sapelo Island, Ga, Courtney Nicole Scott
The Impact Of Fire On Soil Characteristics In The Maritime Forests On Sapelo Island, Ga, Courtney Nicole Scott
Biology Theses
Human activities have drastically altered natural fire regimes in countless ecosystems by suppressing and/or effectuating fires. In the past, management strategies were formulated to eliminate the occurrence of fire altogether but as we have become more aware of the benefits of fires such as reducing the amount of fuel build-up, recycling of nutrients for healthier plant communities and the promotion of biodiversity, prescribed burns are now considered an integral part of forest management. While many studies have explored the benefits of fires on plant communities, very few studies look at the impacts of fire on soil characteristics. Sapelo Island, which …

This dissertation examines the skeletal remains and mortuary practices from two cemeteries at the early medieval site of Libice nad Cidlinou in the Czech Republic. The 9th and 10th centuries in Central Europe have been characterized by political consolidation and the rise of Christian institutions. As Christianity gained influence in the region, conversion altered not only religious beliefs: political landscapes, disease ideologies, material culture, and bodies were also transformed. The skeletal remains and mortuary contexts of 260 individuals from the Akropole and Kanín cemeteries at Libice are compared to examine how social status and engagement with Christianity influenced daily life …

I’Ll Be Dammed! Public Preferences Regarding Dam Removal In New Hampshire (Pre-Print), Natallia Leuchanka Diessner, Catherine Ashcraft, Kevin H. Gardner, Lawrence C. Hamilton
New Hampshire EPSCoR
Decisions about dams, like other environmental conflicts, involve complex tradeoffs between different water uses with varying human and ecological impacts, have significant impacts on public resources and involve many stakeholders with diverse and often conflicting interests. Given the many upcoming dam decisions in New England and across the United States of America, an improved understanding of public preferences about dam decisions is needed to steward resources in the public interest. This research asks (1) What does the public want to see happen with dams?, and (2) Do demographic factors influence public preferences for dam decisions? This paper analyzes data from …

A Geography Of Repression. The Spatio-Temporal Analysis Of The First Years Of The Special Tribunal In Fascist Italy, 1925-1928, Antonio Barocci
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation analyzes the spatial and temporal patterning of political arrests during the initial years of the fascist regime in Italy, from 1925 to 1928. These were crucial years because Italy’s fascists acted rapidly to consolidate their power and to suppress their opponents. A key element of this takeover was the creation of a political court, the Special Tribunal. I argue that while the Special Tribunal did target political enemies, it was also used as a sophisticated system of control of territory and population.
In the first part of the research, it considers the spatial patterning of political arrests from …
Offshore Ontologies: Global Capital As Substance, Simulation, And The Supernatural, Samuel Weeks
Offshore Ontologies: Global Capital As Substance, Simulation, And The Supernatural, Samuel Weeks
College of Humanities and Sciences Faculty Papers
In this article, I bring ontological anthropology into a register that is recognizably political and critical in orientation. My intention is to apply the powerful conceptual approach of the “ontological turn” in order to address a contemporary politico-economic problem of acute importance: offshore finance. Drawing from archival and ethnographic data collected in Luxembourg, I argue that officials from this country’s offshore financial center have employed ontology in particular ways in the service of a drastically imbalanced global capitalist system. In doing so, I contend that anthropologists are not the only people at present engaged in an “ontological turn”; so too …
Enhancing Resilience To Turbulent Global Financial Markets: An Indonesian Experience, Febrio Kacaribu
Enhancing Resilience To Turbulent Global Financial Markets: An Indonesian Experience, Febrio Kacaribu
Economics and Finance in Indonesia
In the empirical literature, large and abrupt declines in capital inflows, or sudden stops, typically hit asset markets and generate output losses in the receiving countries. The significant decrease in capital flows to emerging markets in 2018 is a unique opportunity to test this premise. Using Indonesian data, we found that the sharp decline in capital inflows for over two consecutive quarters in 2018 had an adverse impact on the currency, equities, and bond markets, but no discernible output loss was recorded. Real GDP growth remained resilient throughout 2018 and held broadly steady at around 5 percent in the first …

Gender Differences In Children's Non-Leisure Activities: A Decomposition Analysis, Dayang Haszelinna Abang Ali
Economics and Finance in Indonesia
The prevalence of son preference indicates that girls will have less leisure time compared to boys. This study aims to examine gender differences in weekly hours in schooling, housework, and working among children in Indonesia using Tobit Model and decomposition model of Bauer & Sinning (2005), to test whether son preference explains the differences. The dataset was drawn from the fourth wave of Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS) in 2007. The results show significant gender differences in housework and working for children aged 5-14 years and insignificant gender gap in schooling for both age groups. These results confirm the existence …
Grow Your Own Teacher Programs: A Qualitative Study Of Best Practices To Address The Teacher Shortage, Jack August Harris
Grow Your Own Teacher Programs: A Qualitative Study Of Best Practices To Address The Teacher Shortage, Jack August Harris
Dissertations
Teacher shortages have motivated school districts and state educational agencies to focus on targeted teacher recruitment strategies as a means to mitigate the crisis (Sutcher, Darling-Hammond, & Carver-Thomas, 2016). One specific strategy, Grow Your Own Teacher programs, involves recruiting and developing future teachers from within the local community (MODESE, 2019). While a significant body of research exists about this topic, many districts and state organizations are left to determine what specific program practices best meet their needs. This qualitative study included an analysis of the perceptions of participants and key personnel of Grow Your Own Teacher programs to determine best …

The Eleventh Auer: The Effect Of Kisor V. Wilkie On Rulemaking And Adjudication At The United States Patent And Trademark Office, Andrew Schneider, Jonathan Stroud
Chicago-Kent Journal of Intellectual Property
Courts have long deferred to an agency’s interpretation of an ambiguous rule or statute, in light of the agency’s relevant technical expertise. But some judges prefer that Article III courts review everything; and deferring often involves relying on an agency’s interpretation of a genuinely ambiguous statute—the oft-discussed Chevron deference doctrine. This Article analyzes the more nuanced Auer deference, where a court defers to an agency’s later interpretation of its own ambiguous rule or regulation. Recently, the Supreme Court took and decided Kisor v. Wilkie, which dramatically modified the Auer doctrine. While Kisor appealed a claim for veteran’s benefits that implicated …

The high people concentration of Egypt in area not exceeds by 6% from the area of Egypt has led to many, environmental, economic, and social problems. Therefore, establishment of sustainable urban development in Egyptian desert out of the crowded valley seems obligation or what we can call no choice. Due to the harsh nature of desert, these sustainable urban developments need big amount of energy to operate it. Egypt as one of the developing countries faces many crisis of energy production which eliminate establishment of these sustainable urban development. In the recent years, the concept of zero energy buildings has …

The Impact Of Entrepreneurship On Economic Performance In Indonesia, Yohanes Kadarusman
The Impact Of Entrepreneurship On Economic Performance In Indonesia, Yohanes Kadarusman
Economics and Finance in Indonesia
Entrepreneurship is claimed to have a positive and significant effect on economic growth in developed countries, but less so in developing countries. Using the growth model, this study examines the impact of entrepreneurship on economic performance in Indonesia as indicated by economic growth and income per-capita from 1985 to 2017. The estimation result confirms the non-significant effect of the growth of entrepreneurial ventures on the growth of GDP per-capita. However, the accumulation of the ventures has a positive and significant effect on the level of GDP per capita. The different typology of entrepreneurial ventures in Indonesia provides some insight to …

Coal Geology & Exploration
In area with high groundwater level in the east of China, long-time underground coal mining results in a large subsidence water area on the surface. The risk of water environment pollution in subsidence waters is increasing gradually with the influence of human activities. According to Weber-Fisher law, this paper took Panji waterlogged area of Huainan as the research object, selected the water quality evaluation indexes closely related to the water environment of the waterlogged area, analyzed the water environmental conditions of the waterlogged area in different periods, and quantitatively reflected the time and the area of the water environment quality …

Internal waves are density oscillations propagating along the ocean’s inner stratification, which are now acknowledged as a key constituent of the ocean’s dynamics. They usually result from barotropic tides, which flow over bottom topography, causing density oscillations to propagate along the pycnocline with a tidal frequency (i.e. internal tides). These large-scale waves propagate away from their forcing bathymetry and frequently disintegrate into nonlinear short-scale (higher-frequency) internal wave packets. Typically, short-scale internal wave observations in the ocean are associated with vertical structures (in the water column) of the lowest fundamental mode. Higher vertical modes have recently been documented as well, but …

Development Of A Benthic Foraminifera Based Marine Biotic Index (Foram-Ambi) For The Gulf Of Mexico: A Decision Support Tool, Bryan O'Malley
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Gulf of Mexico (GoM) is an economically important region (e.g. oil and gas, fisheries) and with the expansion of oil drilling, harmful algal bloom events, oil blowouts, dead zones, anthropogenic eutrophication and contaminant loading, it is important that the ecological quality statuses (EcoQS) of different localities in the Gulf are closely monitored. The EcoQS, as implemented by the European Water Framework Directive, is an effective tool for monitoring ecological health and developing reference conditions. One such index used to define EcoQS is the AZTI Marine Biotic Index (AMBI), which pairs species abundance with environmental stressors. Benthic foraminifera are ideal …

The paper explores the relationship between People and the architectural spaces they occupy; understanding the occupants'' impressions while meeting their surrounding environment. In the first place, the relation between human senses and architecture was studied, as the senses are the tools that relate people to the outer environment. The study was then improved through studying the human personality, feelings and people''s impression not to be restricted only on sensations. The study then focuses on the awareness of architectural space using the philosophical field of Phenomenology. Any object, event or experience which a person can see, hear, touch, smell, taste, feel …

The Beast And The Revival Of Rome: Mussolini And Rome In The Premillennial Imagination, Jon Stamm
Theses and Dissertations
Premillennial dispensationalism became immensely influential among American Protestants who saw themselves as defenders of orthodoxy. As theological conflict heated up in the early 20th century, dispensationalism’s unique eschatology became one of the characteristic features of the various strands of “fundamentalists” who fought against modernism and the perceived compromises of mainline Protestantism. Their embrace of the dispensationalist view of history and Biblical prophecy had a significant effect on how they interpreted world events and how they lived out their faith. These fundamentalists established patterns of interpretation that in the second half of the 20th century would fuel the emergence of a …
