Factor Market Rivalry, Factor Market Myopia, And Strategic Blind Spots: The Case Of The Truck Driver Labor Market, Stephen A. Lemay, Dave Mcmahon, John Batchelor, Batchelor Keller
Journal of Transportation Management
This article explores the relationships among factor market rivalry, factor market myopia, and strategic blind spots in the context of the labor market for truck drivers. Levitt (1960) developed the concept of market myopia to explain how managers often overlooked key competitors in product markets. Trucking managers might do the same thing in looking at competition for truck drivers. Factor market myopia and strategic blind spots help to explain how this happens, and how it becomes more severe in the context of factor market rivalry. In the trucking industry, factor market myopia and strategic blind spots may mean that managers …

Digital Mapping Of Togo’S Soil Fertility: Savannah Region, Aminou Saibou
International Programs
A soil assessment was carried out in the savannah region of Togo in 2018, aiming at drawing the digital map of Togo’s soil fertility and making fertilizer recommendations. Soil samples were taken from geo-referenced GPS points and were analyzed for parameters such as water pH, Organic matter, available phosphorus and exchangeable potassium. Thematic maps have been drawn using an ArcGIS package. The results showed that the soils of the Savannah region in Togo are mainly (84%) not very acidic (pH = 5.5 to 6.5), overall poor to very poor (84%) in organic matter (<2% OM), essentially poor to very poor (86%) in available phosphorus (<15 mg/kg of soil) and mostly very poor (87%) in exchangeable potassium (<90 mg / kg of soil). These results allowed the agricultural research institute of Togo to make fertilizer use recommendations and to develop, in partnership with Morocco, a digital platform (fertitogo.tg ) for decision making in crop fertilization.

The Emerging Legal Architecture For Social Justice, Luz E. Herrera, Louise G. Trubek
Faculty Scholarship
Lawyers advocating for social change are now front and center in newspapers and social media. This article discusses how a new breed of progressive lawyers envision social justice law practice today. These “critical lawyers” are diverse in background, gender, ethnicity and race. They see law as a complex, contradictory tool rather than a necessary and sufficient route to justice. Their practices differ from the traditional non-profit public interest firms of the earlier generation that assumed justice would result if law and lawyers were accessible. To highlight the differences, the article discusses the law practices of Beyond Legal Aid, Law for …

The observed movements of humans and animals are realizations of complex spatiotemporal processes. Recent advances in location-aware technologies have rendered trajectory data ubiquitous. Examining the sequenced, instantaneous locations found in movement trajectory data for information reconstructing the location or state of the mover between observed points comprises a primary focus in Time Geography and related disciplines. The PySTPrism toolbox introduced in this paper provides a straightforward and open-source implementation of the Probabilistic Space Time Prism, in addition to related tools from Time Geography. PySTPrism is implemented in Python using the ArcPy module in ArcGIS Pro Desktop.

Remote Sensing And Gis Study Of Hazards And Risks In East Africa, Hafid Nanis
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
East Africa encompasses numerous developing countries and involves one of the most active continental rifts on Earth; namely, the East African Rift System. This region is prone to diverse geohazards due to its geographical location at the plate boundary. Several damaging events had happened across the region and more are predicted to occur in the near future. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate, assess, and forecast natural hazards and potential risks in the region. In this dissertation, remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) were employed to conduct three independent studies focused on assessing geohazards in east Africa. Each study …
Using Soil Geospatial Properties And Environments To Explore Microbial Diversity, Sharon Faye Smith
Using Soil Geospatial Properties And Environments To Explore Microbial Diversity, Sharon Faye Smith
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Soil microorganisms help maintain nutrient cycling, control carbon sequestration, impact plant productivity, and influence several soil chemical and physical properties; yet, the processes that control the microbial composition of soil and how environmental changes may affect the composition and activity of these organisms at different scales remains a difficult and intriguing puzzle for soil scientists, ecologists, and modelers. Wetlands are endangered and important ecosystems that provide several services, which are directly linked to soil function. However, few wetland assessments consider the soil environment and microbial ecology. Linking soil microbial community composition and distribution patterns to soil physio-chemical properties would provide …
A Macroevolutionary View On Extinction In Aves, Chiroptera, And Odonata, Peter Hasik
A Macroevolutionary View On Extinction In Aves, Chiroptera, And Odonata, Peter Hasik
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A central goal of conservation biology is to identify and understand the factors that lead to extinction. The Earth is currently undergoing a 6th mass extinction event, in large part because of human activity. In the last century, rates of extinction have increased anywhere from 8-100 times the background rate of 2 extinctions per 10,000 species every 100 years. However, there remains a debate over whether certain species are predisposed to a higher extinction risk. In particular, it is not known if the macroevolutionary history of a lineage is a major contributor to the probability of extinction, nor is it …

Writing For Local Government Schools: Authors And Themes In Song-Dynasty School Inscriptions, Song Chen
Writing For Local Government Schools: Authors And Themes In Song-Dynasty School Inscriptions, Song Chen
Faculty Journal Articles
A hallmark of the Song dynasty's achievements was the creation of a national network of state-sponsored local schools. This engendered an exponential growth of commemorative inscriptions dedicated to local government schools. Many authors used these inscriptions as an avenue to expound and disseminate their visions of schools and education. Using the methods of network analysis and document clustering, this article analyzes all the inscriptions extant from Song times for local government schools. It reveals a structural schism in the diffusion of ideas between the Upper Yangzi and other regions of the Song. It also demonstrates the growing intellectual influence of …

Using Spatial Methods To Better Understand Food Insecurity And Snap Under-Participation In Texas, Ryan Ramphul
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
The overall objective of this research is to use spatial methods to better understand food insecurity and SNAP under-participation in Texas. Paper 1 assesses whether a sample of community dwelling Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries, who screen positive for food insecurity at healthcare locations in Harris County, exhibit a spatial pattern in terms of where they live. In other words, it tests whether or not there are statistically significant neighborhood hot spots or cold spots of food insecurity against a null hypothesis of complete spatial randomness. This approach is novel because it uses address-level data on patients who report being food …

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Social Studies is considered an essential element of American public education as an academic discipline that cultivates essential knowledge and skills for meaningful participation in democratic society but has become marginalized in recent decades at the elementary level. The current-day state of Maine passed LD291 in 2001 to require K-12 teachers to include Maine Native Americans in all Social Studies instruction. The full implementation of this vision has not yet been achieved due to various barriers and limitations. Yet this work is more critical than ever in current-day Maine, the Whitest state in the nation and a place where the …

Temporality And Acquiescent Immobility Among Aspiring Nurse Migrants In The Philippines, Yasmin Y. Ortiga, Romeo Luis A. Macabasag
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
While there is a considerable literature on how people decide to move from their places of origin, few studies have examined how aspiring migrants cope with immobility and eventually decide to let go of their migration aspirations. This paper uses the lens of migration temporalities to show how Filipino nurses unable to emigrate overseas eventually chose to remain in the Philippines. In particular, we discuss how nurses formulated these decisions as they experienced different forms of temporality: from an optimistic period of 'becoming a migrant' in nursing school to the precarious temporality of building work experience in a context of …

Flood Prediction Using Artificial Neural Networks: Empirical Evidence From Mauritius As A Case Study, A. Z. Dhunny, Reena H. Seebocus, Z. Allam, Mohammad Yasser Chuttur
Knowledge Engineering and Data Science
Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) has been well studied for flood prediction. However, there is not enough empirical evidence to generalize ANN applicability to small countries with microclimates prevailing in a small geographical space. In this paper, we focus on the climatic conditions of Mauritius for which we seek to investigate the accuracy of using ANN to predict flooding using locally collected data from 11 meteorological stations spread across the country. The ANN model for flood prediction presented in this work is trained using 20,000 climate data records, collected over a period of two years for Mauritius. Our input climate features …
The Incidental Environmental Agency, Tara K. Righetti
The Incidental Environmental Agency, Tara K. Righetti
Utah Law Review
State oil and gas conservation agencies are the gatekeepers to oil and gas development: as the agencies charged with granting drilling permits, they decide if, when, where, and how oil and gas will be developed. As such, oil and gas conservation agencies sit on the front lines in the emerging, and increasingly irresolvable, struggle between fossil energy development and the environment. Current oil and gas conservation regulation is designed to promote development, maximize recovery of the resource, and protect the individual property rights of mineral owners. However, advocacy by environmental constituencies, including surface owners and local governments, has challenged the …
Toward An Infrastructural Sublime: Narrating Interdependency In Karen Tei Yamashita’S Los Angeles, Jina B. Kim
Toward An Infrastructural Sublime: Narrating Interdependency In Karen Tei Yamashita’S Los Angeles, Jina B. Kim
English Language and Literature: Faculty Publications
This article examines the vibrant city infrastructures of Karen Tei Yamashita's 1997 novel Tropic of Orange in order to highlight interdependency as political and aesthetic value. The novel's emphasis on urban support systems—the oft-unnoticed roads, pipes, wires, and labor networks that allow the city to function—positions infrastructure as itself a critical lens, one that can reassess the relationship of ethnic American literature and subjectivity to the values of self-ownership, protest, and independence. By amplifying the overlooked support networks that underpin fictions of self-sufficiency, Yamashita's Tropic of Orange diverges from the narrative of self-ownership as liberatory endpoint. Instead, it recuperates the …

China’s latest round of military reforms is driven primarily by Xi Jinping’s ambition to reshape the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) to improve its ability to win informationized [xinxihua, 信息化] wars and to ensure that it remains loyal to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The reforms are unprecedented in their ambition and in the scale and scope of the organizational changes. Virtually every part of the PLA now reports to different leaders, has had its mission and responsibilities changed, has lost or gained subordinate units, or has undergone a major internal reorganization. The relationships between and among the Central Military Commission …
