The Shadow Cost Of Parking Minimums: Evidence From Los Angeles County, Sofia Franco, W. Bowman Cutter, Skyler Lewis
The Shadow Cost Of Parking Minimums: Evidence From Los Angeles County, Sofia Franco, W. Bowman Cutter, Skyler Lewis
Pomona Economics
Minimum Parking Requirements (MPRs) are almost universal in U.S. cities and common in the rest of the world. In the U.S., parking requirements for commercial buildings commonly require 700 ft2 of parking for each 1000 ft2 of floor space. To the extent this is a binding requirement, MPRs could result in distortion in commercial development. MPRs require either the allocation of land for parking, or very costly substitution of structured parking for land. Therefore, MPR distortions are likely to increase with the value of land. A steep gradient in the cost of the MPRs leads to the possibility …

Applying Transit Accessibility Metrics To Locating Affordable Housing, Robert Walsh Smith
Applying Transit Accessibility Metrics To Locating Affordable Housing, Robert Walsh Smith
Master's Theses
The location of affordable housing in the United States is greatly influenced by how it is funded, and current funding criteria does not make wide use of comprehensive accessibility metrics. To show the benefits of using a comprehensive metric to locate affordable housing, one such metric, the TOI, was compared with more simple measures of transit access in a case study. A qualitative assessment of the comprehensive transit metric showed improvements over a simpler measure currently used by an affordable housing program. Statistical modeling was also performed to see if the TOI could better predict whether households had adequate transit …

Peril And Possibility: Wilderness As A Space Of Becoming In Tolkien's The Children Of Húrin And Whedon's Firefly And Serenity, Philip J. Vogel, Kenton L. Sena
Journal of Tolkien Research
A tension between wilderness as place of peril and as a place of purity has existed throughout the history of Western civilization. While the Puritan minister Cotton Mather described the wilderness as a habitation of “Dragons,” “Droves of Devils,” and “Fiery Flying Serpents,” Henry David Thoreau maintained that in order to draw near to God, one must draw near to nature. A spectrum of perspectives about wilderness exists within the tension between these two opposing ideas. As a refugee from civilization who makes his home in the wilderness on the borders of society, the Wild Man archetype, famously expressed in …

Relationship Between Study Habits And Library Use Among Students In Selected Secondary Schools In Akinyele Local Government Area, Ibadan., Jemilat Iyabo Arilesere Mrs, Nwalo Kenneth I.N
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This study is concerned about the study habits of secondary school students. The quality of education is enhanced when students have good study habits and make good use of the library. Unfortunately, students adapt wrong methods of studying by procrastinating and then memorizing when examinations draw near. Some prefer to read in classrooms, home and at times religious centres where they hardly concentrate. The study, therefore, examined the relationship between study habits and library use among secondary schools in Akinyele Local Government area, Ibadan. A descriptive survey technique was employed for the study. Students questionnaire and interview were used for …

ABSTRACT
Faulknerian Echoes and the Grotesque in McCarthy’s The Orchard Keeper (August 2020)
William Leland Haynes, B. A., Texas A&M International University
Chair of Committee: Dr. Manuel Broncano
This thesis is an exploration of Cormac McCarthy and William Faulkner’s craft through a focus on their works The Orchard Keeper and “Barn Burning.” This analysis charts the two dialoguing or conversing with each other across times through the art of their writings.
The basis of this project examines a key phrase from “Barn Burning,” where the problem of doing the right thing creates a conflict of identity within the story’s young …

Vertical Distributions Of Soil Microbial Biomass Carbon: A Global Dataset, Tingting Sun, Yugang Wang, Dafeng Hui, Xin Jing, Wenting Feng
Biology Faculty Research
Soil microbial biomass carbon (SMBC) is important in regulating soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics along soil profiles by mediating the decomposition and formation of SOC. The dataset (VDMBC) is about the vertical distributions of SOC, SMBC, and soil microbial quotient (SMQ = SMBC/SOC) and their relations to environmental factors across five continents. Data were collected from literature, with a total of 289 soil profiles and 1040 observations in different soil layers compiled. The associated environment data collectd include climate, ecosystem types, and edaphic factors. We developed this dataset by searching the Web of Sciene and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure …
Estimating Wait Times And Determining Optimal Routes At Retail Outlets, N/A
Estimating Wait Times And Determining Optimal Routes At Retail Outlets, N/A
Defensive Publications Series
Making a purchase at a grocery store or waiting for a table at a restaurant often entails waiting in a line. While stores are overcrowded at certain times or on certain days, at other times, stores can be relatively empty. This situation is worsened under pandemic conditions: for example, the outbreak of the Covid-19 disease has necessitated the closure of many businesses and enforcement of a six-feet social distance between customers of those businesses that are open. Longer wait times are inconvenient and put people at greater risk of exposure.
This disclosure describes techniques that enable customers to estimate wait …

A Woman’S Portion: 5000 Years A Slave, Ann R. Glickman
A Woman’S Portion: 5000 Years A Slave, Ann R. Glickman
Theses and Dissertations
Slavery has existed for all of recorded history. The evidence is conclusive that slave systems have almost always been majority female. I suggest that slavery originated as an attempt to control female reproductive capacity, and that this attempt to control was not limited to enslaved women.
Snow-Albedo Feedback In Northern Alaska: How Vegetation Influences Snowmelt, Lucas C. Reckhaus
Snow-Albedo Feedback In Northern Alaska: How Vegetation Influences Snowmelt, Lucas C. Reckhaus
Theses and Dissertations
This paper investigates how the snow-albedo feedback mechanism of the arctic is changing in response to rising climate temperatures. Specifically, the interplay of vegetation and snowmelt, and how these two variables can be correlated. This has the potential to refine climate modelling of the spring transition season. Research was conducted at the ecoregion scale in northern Alaska from 2000 to 2020. Each ecoregion is defined by distinct topographic and ecological conditions, allowing for meaningful contrast between the patterns of spring albedo transition across surface conditions and vegetation types. The five most northerly ecoregions of Alaska are chosen as they encompass …
Vegetation Phenology As A Function Of Plant Functional Type And Urbanization, Ryan Lennon
Vegetation Phenology As A Function Of Plant Functional Type And Urbanization, Ryan Lennon
Theses and Dissertations
Urban land cover contributes to higher temperatures in urban areas compared to adjacent rural areas, which can cause an earlier start of the growing season for urban vegetation. Variations in plant community characteristics between urban and rural areas also produce intra-urban differences in vegetation phenophases, although few studies have investigated differences in phenology between plant functional types in multiple urban environments. In this study I used an exploratory analysis based on the Landsat Phenology Algorithm and weather station data to quantify differences in leaf-onset dates for different plant functional types in the New York City Metropolitan Area. The results demonstrate …
Assessing The Potential For Range Expansion Of The Red Tide Algae Karenia Brevis, Edward W. Young
Assessing The Potential For Range Expansion Of The Red Tide Algae Karenia Brevis, Edward W. Young
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
Phytoplankton communities are vital to oceanic ecosystems. While most are harmless or beneficial, a select group possesses the capability to produce toxins and cause mass die-offs of marine organisms. Florida red tide, caused by blooms of the dinoflagellate Karenia brevis, is common in the Gulf of Mexico, although blooms have been transported to the Atlantic coast and impacted estuaries where K. brevis is not normally found. An in-depth overview of compiled estuary research evaluated the possibility of the continued spread of Florida red tide blooms to Southeastern Atlantic estuaries and the likelihood of establishment in non-native regions. A …

Using The Alliant Intercultural Competency Scale To Develop Behavioral Scenarios For Assessing Sociocultural Awareness, Catherine R. Fisher
Using The Alliant Intercultural Competency Scale To Develop Behavioral Scenarios For Assessing Sociocultural Awareness, Catherine R. Fisher
Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current
The current study used and developed situational scenarios based on the questions in the Alliant Intercultural Competency Scale (AICS) as a step toward developing a direct measure of James Madison University (JMU) psychology’s sociocultural awareness course requirement. Participants were first semester psychology students, who have yet to take the sociocultural course requirement, and seniors, who have fulfilled the requirement. The participants responded to the behavioral scenarios survey as well as an ethnocultural empathy survey, and other self-report measures of sociocultural awareness. I compared underclassmen and seniors’ responses in order to assess the feasibility of this type of behavioral measure. Results …
A Comparison Of The Economic And Cultural Development Of Japan And Thailand Through The Human Development And World Happiness Indices, Tanner Money

The purpose of this thesis is to make human development and happiness comparisons between two countries that are found in the same region of the world and share similar cultural and historical backgrounds. For this study, the human development measures for Japan and Thailand are compared based on Life Expectancy, Literacy Rates, and Gross Domestic Product (per capita) measures. First, the historical development of Japan and Thailand is presented, highlighting the key historical economic and political moments in each country that has led them to their present state of development. Second, the two countries were compared using quantitative and qualitative …
The Fatale Monstrum And The Nasty Woman: Gendered Political Representations Of Cleopatra Vii And Hillary Rodham Clinton, Emma Baker
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis examines the use of gender expectations in representations of two historically significant and politically powerful women: Cleopatra VII and Hillary Rodham Clinton. Though their situations were in some ways quite different, each of these women crafted her public image carefully, using both masculine and feminine gender expectations to represent herself as a powerful, capable leader and as a strong, caring mother. Their political enemies similarly drew on both masculine and feminine gender norms in order to represent these women both as dangerous, emasculating, monstrous figures who had to be conquered and as weak and incapable of leadership. The …
The Collaborators Draw The Circle, Gary K. Lengel
The Collaborators Draw The Circle, Gary K. Lengel
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The mystical appeal of a circle reverberates throughout the practice of theatre: from the story circles of our ancestors echoing through the caves and across the ancient savannahs to the modern-day arena palaces that allow playwrights, directors, actors, producers, designers, craftspeople, and, ultimately audiences, to engage and embrace our retold truths, we face each other in circles. This writing references academic instruction and professional experiences in live theatre, documenting various appearances of the circle metaphor as the rehearsal core drives through the production process. It is an endorsement of the circle’s power to the initial table read and beyond: this …
Social Power Of Jazz Festivals, Olga Bekenshtein
Social Power Of Jazz Festivals, Olga Bekenshtein
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Jazz festivals occur in all parts of the world, small cities and metropolises, urban and rural landscapes, stadiums, churches, streets, and abandoned factories. Being a part of the entertainment industry, they have the potential to impact social change. Jazz festivals help us reconsider notions of identity and community, and their communal experience has the potential to undermine dominant social norms. The industry of jazz festivals is based on Black music and has a history of positive and negative social outcomes. Evaluating festivals through the symbolic meaning of music provides an optic into how festivals marginalize and exploit African American cultural …

Paradox In The Bayou: Development And Displacement In America’S Wetlands, Allison Oliver Haertling
Paradox In The Bayou: Development And Displacement In America’S Wetlands, Allison Oliver Haertling
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The bayou communities situated at the southern ends of Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana possess a rich and uniquely diverse cultural heritage. However, economic factors, combined with environmental issues such as land loss from oil and gas dredging, subsidence, and rising seas, have spurred significant migration “up the bayou” in recent decades, threatening the loss of these cultures and leaving behind a population that is growing increasingly more vulnerable. This study investigates the current and anticipated social, physical and fiscal impacts of persistent land loss and population decline on lower Terrebonne Parish, as well as planning strategies for maintaining existing infrastructure and …
Consumer Purchasing Response To Mandatory Genetically Engineered Labeling, Elizabeth Macaulay Thomas
Consumer Purchasing Response To Mandatory Genetically Engineered Labeling, Elizabeth Macaulay Thomas
Theses and Dissertations
On January 1, 2022, mandatory genetically engineered (GE) food disclosure labeling will be required nationwide in the United States. To date, the only mandatory GE labeling law implemented in the U.S. was Act 120 in Vermont. This thesis examines the consumer purchasing response to the implementation of Vermont Act 120 using store-level scanner data of food purchases. I measure the effects of Vermont Act 120 on the grocery store sales of non-GMO, organic, and GE- labeled products in Vermont. Using a difference-in-difference approach, I can compare stores in Vermont to control states before and after the law was passed, implemented, …
Rise And Fall? The Rise And Fall Of Isis In Libya, Azeem Ibrahim
Rise And Fall? The Rise And Fall Of Isis In Libya, Azeem Ibrahim
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
This monograph places events in Libya since 2011 into their historical and social context and argues a form of radical Islamism, linked to long-standing national defiance of outside control, remains a factor even after the defeat of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). This entrenched radicalism means extremist Islamist groups may still make a renewed bid for power until the current civil war is resolved. At the time of this writing, the military campaign by the Libyan National Army has stalled outside Tripoli. Now is the time for the United States and the wider international community to step …
