Going The Distance: Flipped Classrooms And The Research Appointment
Going The Distance: Flipped Classrooms And The Research Appointment
The Southeastern Librarian
This case study examines the use of online help guides and their potential impact in helping graduate distance students prepare for a scheduled meeting with a reference librarian. Students taking a dissertation planning course were surveyed to determine if a custom LibGuide and accompanying class assignments prepared them for in-depth research during their meeting with a reference librarian. Findings revealed that the majority of students believed that this flipped-classroom style approach had a positive impact on their research abilities and skills. Recommendations are provided for online help resources that can be adapted for use in online and hybrid courses.

Potential Pollen Evidence For The 1933 M 7.5 Diexi Earthquake And Implications For Post-Seismic Landscape Recovery, Hongyan Xu, Hanchao Jiang, Kam-Biu Liu, Ning Zhong
Faculty Publications
The relationships between strong earthquakes, landslides, and vegetation destruction and the process of post-seismic recovery in tectonically active alpine valley areas have not been adequately documented. Here we show detailed pollen study results from a swamp located near the epicenter of the 1933 M 7.5 Diexi earthquake in eastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP) to reveal the impact of earthquake on vegetation, and the post-seismic recovery process. Based on(210)Pb-Cs-137 age model, the seismic event layer is well constrained. The earthquake event corresponds stratigraphically to a zone with the lowest pollen concentrations, the lowest pollen diversity, and a high frequency of non-arboreal pollen. …

Even if the ocean represents a large part of Earth’s surface, only a few studies describe marine-derived fungi compared to their terrestrial homologues. In this ecosystem, marine-derived fungi have had to adapt to the salinity and to the plant biomass composition. This articles studies the growth of five marine isolates and the tuning of lignocellulolytic activities under different conditions, including the salinity. A de novo transcriptome sequencing and assembly were used in combination with a proteomic approach to characterize the Carbohydrate Active Enzymes (CAZy) repertoire of one of these strains. Following these approaches, Stemphylium lucomagnoense was selected for its adapted …

Aspergillus flavus is the most common etiology of fungal endophthalmitis in India, while Candida albicans is the causative agent in the West. In this study, we determined the role of microglial cells in evoking an inflammatory response following an infection with A. flavus and C. albicans strains isolated from patients with endophthalmitis. Microglia (CHME-3) cells were infected with A. flavus and C. albicans and the expression of Toll-Like Receptors (TLRs), cytokines and Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) were assessed at various time intervals. A. flavus infected cells induced higher expressions of TLR-1,-2,-5,-6,-7 and-9 and cytokines such as IL-1α, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10 and …

Exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation requires patients to perform a set of certain prescribed exercises a specific number of times. Local muscular endurance exercises are an important part of the rehabilitation program. Automatic exercise recognition and repetition counting, from wearable sensor data, is an important technology to enable patients to perform exercises independently in remote settings, e.g., their own home. In this paper, we first report on a comparison of traditional approaches to exercise recognition and repetition counting (supervised ML and peak detection) with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). We investigated CNN models based on the AlexNet architecture and found that the performance …

The Quest For Greener Pastures: Evaluating The Livelihoods Impacts Of Providing Vegetation Condition Maps To Pastoralists In Eastern Africa, Elia Machado, Helene Purcell, Andrew M. Simons, Stephanie Swinehart
Publications and Research
The survival of millions of pastoral households in Eastern Africa has become increasingly at risk. Due to mounting socioeconomic and climatic stressors, pastoral households are faced with making migration decisions under increasing uncertainty about resource availability and limited coping strategies. We assess the potential of providing vegetation condition maps to support the migration decision of pastoralists in Ethiopia and Tanzania and the effect of map usage on their herd condition and size. The maps were generated from remotely sensed data using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) as a proxy for vegetation condition and overlain with pastoralists’ preferred grazing areas. …
Applying The Values Of Geoethics For Sustainable Speleotourism Development, Aleksandar Antić, Silvia Peppoloni, Giuseppe Di Capua
Applying The Values Of Geoethics For Sustainable Speleotourism Development, Aleksandar Antić, Silvia Peppoloni, Giuseppe Di Capua
KIP Articles
Establishing sustainable and responsible speleotourism development is a major challenge and involves complex activities. Adequate theoretical starting point is the application of geoethical values related to the conservation and protection of the caves to be used for touristic purposes. Positive and negative cases of human behaviors towards speleological geoheritage are discussed, in order to highlight what should be done in cave management to avoid malpractices and on what elements could be founded adequate strategies aimed at promoting sustainable speleotourism. This is important to tourism management organizations involved in the promotion of caves and in creating economic opportunities for local populations, …

Prejudice, Personality And Contact: How Personality Traits Affect The Role Of Intergroup Contact In Interethnic Prejudice Reduction, Aurel Haxhiu
Theses and Dissertations
Despite having had the chance to see a broad spectrum of different scholars efforts to attest the impact of the Big Five personality in intergroup contact, we considered that there is still room to furthermore shed some light in spite of those efforts to describe the intertwined impact while conducting a specific analysis how the Big Five personality traits affect the role of intergroup contact in interethnic prejudice reduction, by taking examples of Kosovo’s albanians and their feeling temperature toward the ethnic group of serbs and the role of contact. On our efforts to explain the impact of the Big …
Spatial Transportation Modeling, Christian Werner
Spatial Transportation Modeling, Christian Werner
Web Book of Regional Science
Transportation modeling is both one of the valuable job skills offered by scientific geography and a topic that can serve to develop analytic intuition. This book is designed for the student receiving a first exposure to the transportation problem as well as an introduction to the formal modeling of geographic phenomena. Transportation modeling is a good and particularly useful example of the sharing of paradigms and methodologies between scientific geography and other sciences. Professor Christian Werner’s geographical approach should be of particular interest to students and followers of the literature not only in human geography but also in operations research, …
Spatial Autocorrelation, John Odland
Spatial Autocorrelation, John Odland
Web Book of Regional Science
The analysis of spatial distributions and the processes that produce and alter them is a central theme in geographic research and this volume is concerned with statistical methods for analyzing spatial distributions by measuring and testing for spatial autocorrelation. Spatial autocorrelation exists whenever a variable exhibits a regular pattern over space in which its values at a set of locations depend on values of the same variable at other locations. Spatial autocorrelation is present, for example, when similar values cluster together on a map. Spatial autocorrelation statistics make it possible to use formal statistical procedures to measure the dependence among …
Video Games, Virtual Reality, And The Progression Of The Cinema Of Interactions, Samuel James Luedtke
Video Games, Virtual Reality, And The Progression Of The Cinema Of Interactions, Samuel James Luedtke
Lawrence University Honors Projects
If a person were to walk in to almost any amusement park, they could surely find some sort of mixed reality experience. Often these consist of a combination of moving seating and 3D projection. While rides like these may seem futuristic and involving cutting-edge technology, their ideology actually traces back to the very beginning of cinema itself. See, one of the first known depictions of camera movement in cinema was used to display the movement of a train in Départ de Jérusalem en chemin de fer (Leaving Jerusalem by Railway, Alexandre Promio, 1897). This was a phantom ride, a genre …
Institutions, Structural Policies, And Economic Development: Evaluating The Interrelationships Between Rule Spaces For Developing Countries, Jordan Pattison
Institutions, Structural Policies, And Economic Development: Evaluating The Interrelationships Between Rule Spaces For Developing Countries, Jordan Pattison
Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts
Research on long term economic development has consolidated around the central role of economic and political institutions. Within these institutional spaces, structural policies represent a subset of incentive structures with their own effects on economic behavior. To capture the separate effects of both institutional environments and structural policies, we construct an Institutional Index (II) and a Structural Policy Index (SPI) to evaluate their effects on income levels and short term growth rates for non-high-income states. This paper finds that both the II and SPI predict variations in income levels between non-high-income states, with the II producing a larger and more …
