Role Of Public Libraries In Information Literacy For Women Empowerment: With Special Reference To Kanyashree Girls Of Nabagram In Murshidabad District Of West Bengal, Subrata Biswas, Prasenjit Deb

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

As per Michelle Obama, "No country can ever truly flourish if it stifles the potential of its women and deprives itself of the contributions of half of its citizens". It is quite lucid that empowerment of women means making women economically and socially independent, self-reliant, confident and positive in attitude. Kanyashree Prakalpa is considered as one of the most significant tools in this regard with a participatory approach for the empowerment of women. This helps the women to develop themselves individually and to participate in the developmental activities of the family and society. The main objective of the conduct of …

Importation Of Macrocyclic Lactone Resistant Cyathostomins On A Us Thoroughbred Farm, Martin K. Nielsen, M. Banahan, R. M. Kaplan

Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center Faculty Publications

Anthelmintic resistance in equine cyathostomins is both widespread and highly prevalent in the benzimidazole and tetrahydropyrimidine classes; however, reports of resistance to macrocyclic lactone (ML) drugs are sparse and sporadic. This study reports a case of clear ML resistance in a group of Thoroughbred yearlings imported from Ireland to the US in 2019. Fecal egg count reduction (FECR) following ivermectin administered in February 2020 demonstrated 100% reduction in the US bred yearlings, but 93.5%, 70.5%, and 74.5% reduction in three groups of the imported yearlings. The two former groups were then retreated with ivermectin, yielding FECRs of 33.8% and 23.5%, …

Public Preferences And Willingness To Pay For Invasive Forest Pest Prevention Programs In Urban Areas, Damian C. Adams, Jose R. Soto, John Lai, Francisco J. Escobedo, Sergio Alvarez, Abu S.M.G. Kibria

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Invasive forest pests can cause environmental and economic damage amounting to billions of dollars (US) in lost revenues, restoration and response costs, and the loss of ecosystem services nationwide. Unfortunately, these forest pests do not stay confined to wildland forest areas and can spread into suburban and urban areas, imposing significant costs on local governments, homeowners, and management agencies. In this study, a contingent valuation experiment is used to estimate Florida residents’ willingness to pay (WTP) a monthly utility fee that would protect urban forests from invasive pests by implementing a monitoring and prevention program for their early detection and …

Plutarch's Themistocles: The Serpent Of Hellas, Jennifer Finn Sep 2020

Plutarch's Themistocles: The Serpent Of Hellas, Jennifer Finn

History Faculty Research and Publications

In Plutarch’s Themistocles, the general and expatriate is thrice referenced using snake imagery. This article argues that Plutarch deliberately uses snake motifs at loaded points in the narrative to express the transformations of the general’s image in Athenian social memory, and to direct his reader towards a certain interpretation of the general’s legacy. In the centuries between the Persian Wars and the composition of Plutarch’s Lives, Themistocles had been variously represented in Athenian memory as both a patriot and a traitor, often with reference to serpentine imagery that may have been initially propagated by the general himself. An analysis of …

Annals Of The Hoồng Bàng Clan: From Ancient Legend To Modern Molecular Biology Evidence, Hoang Huu Phuoc

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

The biography of the Hồng Bàng Clan is considered as a legend, a semi-historical document and an important part of the Viet’s cultural heritage. According to this work, the Viet people are the descendants of Shen Nong (an ancestor of the Han Chinese), migrating from China to the Red River Delta. A large number of scholars have built a Hundred Viet/ 百越 hypothesis, also known as “migration-from-the-north hypothesis” from this document. Throughout the long history, Hồng Bàng legend has created popular misunderstandings of the Viet about their origin and misconceptions for later researchers of various subjects, such as literature, linguistics, …

The Baltic States' Relations With Russia, Carrington Matthews

Global Insight

The Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania) have had cold relations with Russia since they were under the control of tsarist Russia. After about only 20 years of independence, the Baltic states were involuntary absorbed into the Soviet Union. This paper examines the history behind the relationship between the Baltic states and the Soviet Union throughout the twentieth century and how the relationship grew colder in the post-Soviet era by examining a combination of scholarly journal articles and informative web articles that detail recent facts and events pertaining to the Baltic states and Russia. One of the primary causes of …

The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act is a law designed to protect workers against employment losses. Employers are required to provide employees with a 60-day notice in the event of plant closings and mass layoffs. Under normal conditions, WARNs are required in the event of a) Plants closing or stopping operation either permanently or temporarily affecting 50 or more workers; b) Layoffs of 500 or more employees during a 30-day-period or when these layoffs constitute at least a third of the company’s workforce; and c) Temporary layoffs expected to exceed six months, in this case, when a temporary …

Are There Opportunities In Opportunity Zones?, Tatyana Guzman, Rachel Lefebre

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

Opportunity Zones (OZ) are an economic development tool designed to spur investment in impoverished areas (census tracts). OZs were created by the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. They allow investors to defer (and, if investments are held for a long time, to partially exclude) capital gains received from qualified investments made in Opportunity Zones from federal tax. In this research we speculate on the potential effect of the Opportunity Zones program in the greater Cleveland area. 8,764 census tracts in the United States received Opportunity Zone designation. 320 of them were selected in Ohio. Of those, 317 are low-income …

The visualization of country cooperation network and the geographical distribution of publications and funds demonstrate that international BRI studies are mainly carried out by countries along the routes of B&R (Belt and Road), with China, U.S.A., Australia, and the U.K. ranking as the top four in terms of research quantity and the number of international cooperation. Diachronically, the time-zone keyword display reveals the professionalization and reification of BRI research. The qualitative analysis of the top 40 high co-citation articles indicates three …

Terms Of Endearment: The Displacement Of Inday, Hazel T. Biana, Ruel M. Nalam Sep 2020

Terms Of Endearment: The Displacement Of Inday, Hazel T. Biana, Ruel M. Nalam

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

The term inday implies two possible meanings depending on where one is in the Philippines. In the Luzon group of islands, more specifically in Metro Manila, inday refers to the female help, usually of Visayan descent. On the other hand, in the Visayas and Mindanao group of islands, inday is a term used for endearment and respect for female family members, friends, and women of influence. What this paper aims to do is to provide a theoretical grounding, through oppositional gazing, of why the term inday oscillates between varied definitions in the context of placism or discrimination of people based …

Biopesticide Research And Product Development In Africa For Sustainable Agriculture And Food Security – Experiences From The International Centre Of Insect Physiology And Ecology (Icipe), Komivi Senyo Akutse, Sevgan Subramanian, Nguya Kalemba Maniania, Thomas Dubois, Sunday Ekesi

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Arthropod pests and vectors constrain the livelihood opportunities of people in Africa by debilitating production of crops and livestock and through transmission of vector-borne diseases. In the absence of effective alternative management options to tackle these pests and vectors, there is extensive dependence on synthetic pesticides for their management on crop and livestock systems, with significant negative impacts on animal and human health, and the environment. Biopesticides are effective and environmentally sustainable alternatives to synthetic pesticides. At the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe), the Arthropod Pathology Unit (APU) was established for effective biopesticide research-for-development (R4D), underpinned by …
