Education, Hurricanes, And Bananas: Studying Abroad In Honduras, Daphne Fauber
Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement
The College of Education Honduras Study Abroad program has been sending students to Honduras for a 17-day investigation of Honduran history, educational systems, and social justice in education since 2003. Honduras is a Central American country with a long history of exploitation, political conflict, and environmental disasters. The country began with a swift and brutal colonization by the Spanish, which left the indigenous people persecuted and massacred. In 1998, Honduras experienced a devastating hurricane that decimated many buildings and infrastructure. Large-scale farming operations run by foreign investors has resulted in political turmoil and a struggling working class. However, Honduras has …

Primary Rights And The Inequalities Of E-Book Access, Roën F. Janyk, Arielle R. Lomness
Charleston Library Conference
The e-book landscape is in a constant state of flux. More recent developments include new acquisition models, advances in platform usability and navigation, more lenient DRM provisions, and improvements to simultaneous user access licenses. However, what has not been addressed recently are the inequalities in e-book access for libraries across the world due to ‘primary rights.’ Territorial rights versus world rights is a licensing issue affecting libraries globally, and yet little is being done to address the inequalities of access. Join our discussion that will examine the ‘unavailable in your country’ message libraries often see alongside e-book purchase options, review …

The Time Has Come... To Build, Reflect, And Analyze Connections Between Qualitative And Quantitative Data, Jordan S. Sly, Leigh Ann Depope, Cynthia G. Frank, Stephanie M. Ritchie
Charleston Library Conference
This paper will address the development process of a qualitative evaluation tool to aid in the thorough analysis of library resources at the University of Maryland. Specifically, our project looks at the use and added value of this tool for the building, reflecting, and analyzing the connections between qualitative and quantitative data. This will allow for more meaningful justifications of budgetary decisions compared to cost and use metrics alone. Given the necessity for meticulous review of continuing resources, our project addresses a request for enhanced transparency from the university faculty and library oversight bodies and serves as a useful tool …

Communicating Collections: Strategies For Informing Library Stakeholders Of Collections, Budget, & Management Decisions, Laura Pascual, John Abresch, Anna Seiffert
Charleston Library Conference
A challenging aspect of the collection management process is effectively communicating with stakeholders about library resources. Communication can range from obtaining patron feedback integral in collection planning to effective messaging elaborating on collection budgets and cancellation decisions. It has also become increasingly necessary to explain the various acquisition models that affect the landscape of library content and use of electronic resources. In this paper, the University of South Florida will present the results of a survey of the approaches used in academic library websites to communicate collection policies along with related considerations, statistics and data, justifications, and factors affecting selection …

C-IMAGE data
The dataset contains matrices describing the relationship between six provinces in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) in terms of the Lagrangian dynamical geography of the GoM regions, the community structure of demersal fish, the potential for larval connectivity, and geographic distance. The six provinces are West Florida Shelf (WSF), North Central (NC) North West (NW), South West (SW), Yucatan Peninsula (YP), and Cuba (CUB). The similarity in community structure was computed for marine demersal fish based on the gulf-wide bottom longline survey is archived in GRIIDC Unique Dataset Identifier (UDI) R4.x267.000:0039 (DOI: 10.7266/N7G73C4N). From Being To Doing: Anti-Racism As Action At Work, Ione T. Damasco
Roesch Library Faculty Presentations
Over the past few years, the conversation around equity in libraries has focused on thinking of the word ally as a verb, rather than as an identity. With recent events highlighting specific issues around race, the conversation has now shifted to many people wanting to be anti-racist. In this session, we will focus on anti-racism as action, rather than using the word anti-racist as identity. In particular, we will examine our notions of professionalism in libraries. Can changing how we define professionalism in library workplaces be an example of anti-racist action?
We will take a critical look at how certain …

Past, Present And Future Of The Research On The Pro-Environmental Behaviour In Tourism: A Bibliometric Analysis, Iana Bilynets, Ljubica Knežević Cvelbar
Economic and Business Review
Environmental sustainability is one of the key challenges humanity is facing today. Tourism is an invasive industry in terms of the damage it causes to the environment. An effective way to mitigate the negative environmental impacts of tourism is to shift tourist behaviour towards environmentally friendly behaviour. While there is a growing number of publications on tourist pro-environmental behaviour (PEB), this paper aims to overview the existing research in this area by applying a bibliometric analysis. Co-citations, keyword co-occurrences and bibliographic coupling are used to analyse the tourism PEB research and provide guidelines for the future.

Preparedness, Agility, And The Philippine Response To The Covid-19 Pandemic: The Early Phase In Comparative Southeast Asian Perspective, Filomeno V. Aguilar Jr.
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Was the Philippines prepared for the Covid-19 pandemic? Did the government take early and effective action that can be characterized as strategically agile? Thisarticle answers these questions by reconstructing the chronology of the Philippine government’s response to the pandemic during the early phase. It focuses on three issues: virus importation (specifically the first Covid-19 case), testing, and contact tracing. The Philippine response is contrasted with those of Thailand and Vietnam, which, unlike the Philippines, have succeeded in lowering per capita mortality rate. Deficient in strategic agility, the Philippines failed to consider early on a scenario of extreme disease outbreak. KEYWORDS: …

The Spatial Dimension Of Entrepreneurship: Stylized Facts For The Case Of Austria, Christian Reiner, Christopher Kronenberg, Helmut Gassler
Economic and Business Review
Austria and other European countries are striving to increase the level of entrepreneurial activities to create jobs and income in the aftermath of the Great Recession. The aim of this contribution is to establish stylized empirical facts about regional entrepreneurial activities in Austria. The methodology rests upon a spatial data analysis, the main results of which demonstrate a decline in entrepreneurial activities in the last decade, with a stable pattern of spatial distribution of new ventures and high-growth firms. Overall, our empirical findings point to a number of stylized facts questioning whether entrepreneurship is able to deliver all the proposed …
The Penalty Of Mobility In Manila During Periods Of Public Health Crises, Michael D. Pante
The Penalty Of Mobility In Manila During Periods Of Public Health Crises, Michael D. Pante
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Mobility seems to impose a paradoxical penalty on individuals based in Metro Manila. Looking at the experiences of public health crises during the American colonial period and the present-day Covid-19 pandemic, this essay focuses on the inordinate restrictions on and blame assigned to the least mobile segments of the population despite the fact that such crises are aided by heightened mobility. Past and present disease outbreaks force us to acknowledge that our cities contain groups of people with varying levels of mobility, another form of social inequality that badly needs to be addressed. Beyond The Pathogen: Cultural Influences On The Impact Of Epidemics Viewed From History, Linda A. Newson
Beyond The Pathogen: Cultural Influences On The Impact Of Epidemics Viewed From History, Linda A. Newson
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
The paper reflects on the historical experience of epidemics in Latin America and the Philippines. It shows how cultural factors can affect the ability of societies to develop immunity and recover. It also shows how leadership can influence the way in which an epidemic and the health crisis is managed. As such, it argues that the impact of a single epidemic is unlikely to be the same throughout the world or even within one country. Parish Records And The History Of Philippine Epidemics, Peter Xenos
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
The Philippine epidemic experience suggests a research perspective that is attentive to local spatial variation and also recognizes connections across long periods of time, particularly across the Spanish and American colonial eras and the epidemic experience then and since. Among historical materials that need to be incorporated into the discourse and connected with evidence from modern, spatially disaggregated data systems are parish archival records of births, deaths, and marriages; households; and population changes. This research note outlines the Philippine parish records and presents illustrative results from twenty-eight parishes. Those records include local time series of deaths from which mortality crises, …

Old Ways And New Fears: Bayanihan And Covid-19, Greg Bankoff
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
In times of trouble, Filipinos traditionally turn to one another for help. This form of community assistance is popularly known as bayanihan. Historically, Filipinos have met the challenges of life in their perilous homeland, whether it be from natural or human causation, by working together. Except, apparently, it no longer does, and Filipinos are now told that the same properties that made their communities so resilient in the past have been transformed by the Covid-19 pandemic into their greatest vulnerability. Even the term bayanihan has been overtly redefined through legislation and government programs to reflect entirely different purposes. KEYWORDS: BAYANIHAN …

Impacts Of Land-Use Change On The Menominee River In Jo Daviess County, Illinois, Preston J. Konop
Theses and Dissertations
This study addresses land-use changes in Jo Daviess County, Illinois, and their effects on the Menominee River. The Menominee River flows north to south through Jo Daviess County, and southern Grant County, Wisconsin. Many of the surrounding properties are agricultural and have undergone developmental and land-use changes that may affect the flood flashiness of the Menominee River. The concern with increasing flood flashiness of the Menominee River include more frequent flooding events, undercutting of riverbanks, and increased amounts of sediment transport from upstream locations into the Mississippi River. Increases in impermeable surfaces have led to greater amounts of runoff during …

The Use Of Wayfinding Apps By Deafblind Travelers In An Urban Environment: Insights From Focus Groups, Amy T. Parker, Martin Swobodzinski, Tara Brown-Ogilvie, Jenna Beresheim-Kools
Special Education Faculty Publications and Presentations
This brief report explores qualitative themes from focus groups with nine individuals who are Deafblind regarding their use of wayfinding apps to support orientation and mobility in an urban environment. Culturally responsive approaches to the design of the focus groups integrated the partnership with Deafblind communication facilitators and ProTactile approaches to solicit naturalistic inquiry on the experiences and preferences of Deafblind travelers. Thematic emergences suggest that participants benefit from various wayfinding apps for orientation and mobility in a densely populated city but they desire greater functionality, consistency of access, equity, and recognition of the unique travel demands faced by Deafblind …

Examination Of Soil Water Nitrate-N Concentrations From Common Land Covers And Cropping Systems In Southeast Minnesota Karst, Kevin Kuehner, Toby Dogwiler, Jeppe Kjaersgaard
College of Natural and Applied Sciences
The purpose of this study was to identify the range of soil water nitrate-nitrogen (nitrate) concentrations measured at a four-foot depth from nine different land covers and cropping systems in southeast Minnesota. Results from the five-year study (2011-2015) found low concentrations of soil water nitrate, generally less than 2 mg/L, from prairie, forest and low maintenance homeowner lawn sites. Cattle pasture sites and a golf course averaged 5.1 and 3.7 mg/L, respectively. A grass field border and grassed waterway had similar concentrations and averaged between 5.9 mg/L (non-fertilized) and 8.9 mg/L (fertilized). Concentrations from the grass strips were higher than …
