Ignatian Leadership And Place-Based Learning, Rebecca Murray Nov 2020

Ignatian Leadership And Place-Based Learning, Rebecca Murray

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

In An Ignatian Method of City Dwelling (2011) John M. Staudenmaier, SJ notes that “Ignatius teaches that prayer is geographical at its core.” On his own journey of leadership, Ignatius himself learned much about the lives of others, and of himself, through the particular places he visited (often for much longer than he intended). By focusing on a specific geography, place-based community engagement can foster Ignatian leadership as it encourages faculty, staff and students to journey with a community in their own home. Because this unique way of engaging the community emphasizes depth of engagement over breadth, it is …

Education In Florida, 1821-1829, James O. Knauss Nov 2020

Education In Florida, 1821-1829, James O. Knauss

Florida Historical Quarterly

Writers on the history of education in Florida have usually passed over the period between 1821 and 1830 with only casual mention. During this decade no public schools were established in the territory and the records relating to private schools and libraries are meagre. However, since the educational activities in these years form the background of the later cultural development, it seems advisable to gather all available material on the subject and to attempt to draw a picture as accurate as possible under the circumstances.

Home Life Of The Florida Indians, Benjamin Harrison Nov 2020

Home Life Of The Florida Indians, Benjamin Harrison

Florida Historical Quarterly

Every family of mankind refers fondly to a Golden Age, when peace and innocence reigned on earth. The lost paradise is no monopoly of the Christian, of the Greek or even of the Old World, since the Inca and the Aztec were equally confident in the truth of his traditions describing it. When Columbus compared the happy conditions he observed in the islands to which he came, with those of Europe, he declared the inhabitants were close to the angels in disposition as well as in geography, and he confidently looked for his Blessed Mountain in all his wanderings. When …

Exploring Efl Student Teachers’ Perceptions Of Student-Led Seminars, Majid Al-Amri Nov 2020

Exploring Efl Student Teachers’ Perceptions Of Student-Led Seminars, Majid Al-Amri

i.e.: inquiry in education

Abstract

Student-led seminars have not been widely researched from the student perspective despite their prevalence in different streams of education literature. Based on four focus group interviews involving 24 students from a university in Saudi Arabia, this study evaluated student-led seminar sessions from the perspective of EFL student teachers, to generate relevant themes and categories. The themes identified comprised: preparing for seminar sessions, implementing seminar sessions, and receiving feedback after seminar sessions. Results found that students acknowledged the advantages of student-led seminars, but were worried about engaging in student-led seminars. Others preferred to receive guidance from the instructor, and some …

One Story Creates Another: Using Book Clubs To Promote Inquiry In The Content Areas, Regine E. Randall, Joseph P. Marangell Nov 2020

One Story Creates Another: Using Book Clubs To Promote Inquiry In The Content Areas, Regine E. Randall, Joseph P. Marangell

i.e.: inquiry in education

Book clubs provide an innovative structure to study course content. Teachers can supplement the use of traditional textbooks and primary sources by including narratives that provide personal perspective into world events. Although more typical of English Language Arts classrooms, incorporating the workshop model into content area instruction merged disciplinary-specific skills with the more advanced literacy skills expected of students in high school. This article describes how two teachers organized an inquiry-based instructional unit on World War II that allowed students to examine the stories of youth using a lens of “action and adversity.” Students showed greater engagement and higher levels …

To achieve this, the quantitative analysis adopted as a methodology in the study by determining the size of the deficit in the infrastructure of health centres for primary …

Time And Southern Theories: Relation, Consequences, And Debates, Ana Beatriz Martins Nov 2020

Time And Southern Theories: Relation, Consequences, And Debates, Ana Beatriz Martins

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

In Southern theories, time has remained little examined. This article uses the hypothesis that time is an epistemological aspect and central to the construction of sociological knowledge. If our hypothesis is established, it would make the adequacy of European theories unviable as a standard, as general, and as universal since these would be imbued with their temporal conceptions while other societies have their own approaches to time. So, there is a new dimension for Southern theories to explore. The article has three main parts: In the first part I present the hypothesis, a new approach to time (as an epistemological …

Criminology As Epistemic Necropolitics, Tamari Kitossa Phd Nov 2020

Criminology As Epistemic Necropolitics, Tamari Kitossa Phd

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

I argue in this essay that from 1492 to the present, the Global North has used theories of “crime,” its causation and control, as part of a three-pronged epistemic necropolitical attack on the Global South. I suggest that the emergence of critical criminology and its more recent offshoots, given their dependence on the present or hypothetical war making and coercive state, are themselves a part of the problem. I suggest criminology is a Trojan Horse that brings epistemic toxic waste and destruction in the guise of deterministic theories on crime and its control. Like their Inquisitorial predecessors, I suggest criminology …

A Climatological Analysis Of The Monsoon Break Following The Summer Monsoon Onset Over Luzon Island, Philippines, Lyndon Mark P. Olaguera, Jun Matsumoto, Hisayuki Kubota, Esperanza O. Cayanan, Flaviana D. Hilario Nov 2020

A Climatological Analysis Of The Monsoon Break Following The Summer Monsoon Onset Over Luzon Island, Philippines, Lyndon Mark P. Olaguera, Jun Matsumoto, Hisayuki Kubota, Esperanza O. Cayanan, Flaviana D. Hilario

Physics Faculty Publications

This study investigates the climatology of the monsoon break following the onset of the summer rainy season over Luzon Island (120–122.5°E, 13–22°N) in the Philippines from 1979–2017. The first post-onset monsoon break is remarkable in stations located over the north and central Luzon Island and occurs climatologically in early June. Composite analysis of the large-scale circulation features during the monsoon break period shows that this break is associated with the westward extension of the western North Pacific Subtropical High (WNPSH), which weakened the monsoon southwesterlies and induced enhanced low-level divergence over Luzon Island. The westward extension of the WNPSH may …

Improving Evidence On Women's Groups: A Proposed Typology And Reporting Checklist, Sapna Desai, Thomas De Hoop, Leigh Anderson, Bidisha Barooah, Tabitha Mulyampiti, Ekwaro Obuku, Audrey Prost, Howard White

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Women’s groups are widely implemented and researched, particularly in South Asia and Africa. However, there is no consistent approach to describing their varied implementation models, which hinders construct validity and accurate interpretation of evidence. This paper proposes a typology and reporting checklist to support transferability of evidence across models and settings.

Soil Water Dynamics Within Variable Rate Irrigation Zones Of Winter Wheat, Elisa Anne Woolley Nov 2020

Soil Water Dynamics Within Variable Rate Irrigation Zones Of Winter Wheat, Elisa Anne Woolley

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding the spatial and temporal dynamics of soil water and crop water stress within a field is critical for effective Variable Rate Irrigation (VRI) management. Proper VRI can result in improved protection of the crop from early onset of crop water stress while minimizing runoff and drainage losses. The objectives of this study are (1) to examine zone delineation for informing irrigation recommendations from volumetric water content (VWC) and field capacity (FC) to grow similar or greater wheat yields with less water, (2) evaluate the ability to model soil and crop water dynamics within a season and within a field …

Hacking Hipaa: "Best Practices" For Avoiding Oversight In The Sale Of Your Identifiable Medical Information, Riyad A. Omar Nov 2020

Hacking Hipaa: "Best Practices" For Avoiding Oversight In The Sale Of Your Identifiable Medical Information, Riyad A. Omar

Journal of Law and Health

In light of the confusion invited by applying the label "de-identified" to information that can be used to identify patients, it is paramount that regulators, compliance professionals, patient advocates and the general public understand the significant differences between the standards applied by HIPAA and those applied by permissive "de-identification guidelines." This Article discusses those differences in detail. The discussion proceeds in four Parts. Part II (HIPAA’s Heartbeat: Why HIPAA Protects Identifiable Patient Information) examines Congress’s motivations for defining individually identifiable health information broadly, which included to stop the harms patients endured prior to 1996 arising from the commercial sale of …

Microplastics In Pacific Northwest Bivalves: Ecological Prevalence, Harvester-Consumer Exposure, And Aquarium Exhibit Outcomes, Britta Rahel Baechler Nov 2020

Microplastics In Pacific Northwest Bivalves: Ecological Prevalence, Harvester-Consumer Exposure, And Aquarium Exhibit Outcomes, Britta Rahel Baechler

Dissertations and Theses

Up to 23 million metric tons of mismanaged plastics enter the global ocean annually. Microplastics (MPs;<5mm) degrading. MPs leak into the environment and now pervade every corner of the earth, with implications for animal, plant, ecosystem and human health. It is important to understand localized environmental MP prevalence, distribution and organismal uptake in order to determine the extent of MP pollution, and ultimately unlock solution sets to reduce transmission of MPs into the natural world. In Chapter 2, I quantified MP types, concentrations, anatomical burdens, geographic distribution, and temporal differences in Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas) and Pacific razor clams (Siliqua patula) from 15 coastal sites in Oregon. Both of these species are integral to culture, economy, gastronomy and food security along the United States West Coast. In Chapter 3, I quantified MPs in Pacific razor clams collected from 8 Olympic Coast, Washington sites, administered questionnaires to recreational razor clammers and subsequently estimated annual MP exposure of those Olympic Coast razor clam harvester-consumers surveyed. In Chapter 4, I designed and installed an educational ocean plastic …

Geologic Mapping Of Dyer County, Tennessee, Renee Marie Reichenbacher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The stratigraphy and structure beneath Dyer County, Tennessee, were mapped using lignite exploration wells, water wells, US Army Corps of Engineers borings, and previously interpreted seismic reflection lines to better understand the seismic threat of the underlying New Madrid seismic zone structures. New Madrid seismic zone earthquakes are concentrated on faults of the Reelfoot rift, one system of which is the northwest-trending Lake County uplift and Tiptonville dome, which extends in northwestern Tennessee through Lake and Obion counties into Dyer County. Structure contour maps of the tops of the Paleozoic, Cretaceous, and Eocene sections were made to produce cross-sections and …

While schools struggle financially, capital for purchasing physical learning aids is often cut. To determine if costs could be reduced for learning aids, this study analyzed classroom-based distributed digital manufacturing using 3-D printing of open-source learning aid designs. Learning aid designs are analyzed in detail for their economic viability considering printing and assembly costs with purchased components and compared to equivalent or inferior commercial products available on Amazon. The results show current open-source 3-D printers are capable of manufacturing useful learning aids and that doing so provides high economic savings in the classroom. Overall, the average learning aid would save …

How To Make Better Sessions Judges: Appellate Review A Proposal To Reform Tennessee’S General Sessions Courts For The 21st Century, Willie Santana Nov 2020

How To Make Better Sessions Judges: Appellate Review A Proposal To Reform Tennessee’S General Sessions Courts For The 21st Century, Willie Santana

Lincoln Memorial University Law Review Archive

In the past several years, general sessions judges have made headlines for illegal behavior such as bribery, obstruction of justice and witness tampering, judicial ethics violations, obvious lapses of judgment, and even suspect and unconstitutional behavior. This misconduct from the bench hurts society’s trust in the judiciary, but the damage is not merely academic. Judicial misconduct also does very real and immediately applicable damage to the people directly involved in criminal cases: victims who may never see justice, and those accused of crimes whose very future depends on an impartial administration of justice. That is an unfortunate state of affairs …

Insecta Mundi

Four online photographs from Oaxaca, Mexico taken by N. R. Jenzen-Jones and posted on inaturalist.org reveal Selenops sp., probably S. mexicanus Keyserling (Arachnida: Araneae: Selenopidae), as a new host spider species, genus and family for the common and widespread American spider wasp Tachypompilus ferrugineus (Say) (rusty spider wasp). The wasp transported the immobilized spider up an exterior stucco wall of a house, dorsal side upward, walking backwards for 3 m to her nest in a gap between the wooden planking and stucco wall beneath the roof, while grasping the femur of its right pedipalp with her mandibles.

Decentralization, Local Government Fiscal Independence, And Poverty: Evidence From Philippine Provinces, Tristan A. Canare Nov 2020

Decentralization, Local Government Fiscal Independence, And Poverty: Evidence From Philippine Provinces, Tristan A. Canare

Economics Department Faculty Publications

Decentralization has become a popular development program among middle- and low-income economies worldwide. The rationale behind decentralization is the local government’s proximity to consumers gives it an information advantage over the central government on needs and preferences. However, the central government has economies of scale and has access to more resources. Using data from Philippine provinces, this paper studies the relationship between decentralization – as represented by local government fiscal independence and as measured by locally sourced revenues expressed as share of total revenue – and poverty incidence. It finds evidence that fiscal independence is associated with lower poverty, but …

Environmental Factors Influencing Urban Homicide Clearance Rates: A Spatial Analysis Of New York City, Leslie W. Kennedy, Joel M. Caoplan, Eric L. Piza, Amanda L. Thomas

Publications and Research

In this paper, we explore the conditions under which clearance rates improve by looking at the experience across New York City. Using one agency provides a control on the administrative differences that appear across other jurisdictions that have been studied, usually through cross-national analysis. Our analysis uses Risk Terrain Modeling (RTM) to identify environmental features that relate to closed versus open homicide cases using two years of New York City Police Department (NYPD) data. This analysis is supplemented with an investigation of precinct-wide social structure variables to examine how context matters in influencing closure rates.

The Fold Illusion: The Origins And Implications Of Ogives On Silicic Lavas, Graham Dm Andrews, Stuart Kenderes, Alan Whittington, Shelby L. Isom, Sarah Brown, Holly Danielle Pettus, Brenna Cole, Kailee Gokey

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Folds on the surfaces of mafic lavas are among the most readily recognized geological structures and are used as first-order criteria for identifying ancient lavas on Earth and other planetary bodies. However, the presence of surface-folds on the surface of silicic lavas is contested in this study and we challenge the widely accepted interpretation that silicic lava surfaces contain folds using examples from the western United States and Sardinia, Italy. We interpret the ridges and troughs on their upper surfaces, typically referred to as ‘ogives’ or ‘pressure ridges’, as fracture-bound structures rather than folds. We report on the absence of …

Deaf Interpreters’ Perception Of Themselves As Professionals In Ireland: A Phenomenological Study, Noel P. O'Connell, Teresa Lynch Nov 2020

Deaf Interpreters’ Perception Of Themselves As Professionals In Ireland: A Phenomenological Study, Noel P. O'Connell, Teresa Lynch

Journal of Interpretation

In the extensive literature on sign language interpreting, very little attention has been given to deaf interpreters’ understanding of themselves as professionals. This gap may be due to the fact that professional sign language interpreting is often seen to be synonymous with hearing people. The research therefore set out to gain an insight into how deaf interpreters’ view themselves as professionals, what their understanding of ‘being a professional’ is, and what issues are of concern to them. The authors present and discuss findings from an analysis, informed by professionalism theory, of data derived from interviews with 5 deaf interpreters in …
