Cottagecore And Rural Gentrification, Zoe Johnston
Cottagecore And Rural Gentrification, Zoe Johnston
The Compass
The internet has become filled with images of stone cottages covered in ivy, sepia-tinted tea parties abundant with home-baked pastries, women in peasant dresses trailing their fingers across tall grasses, and flower bouquets set into mason jars. Each of these scenes is categorized under the aesthetic of “cottagecore,” which is growing in popularity. This aesthetic movement draws upon people’s desires for simplicity and a nostalgia for a pre-industrial lifestyle. However, an unexamined consequence of this idyllic fantasy is the subsequent gentrification of rural communities. Gentrification is the process of funneling capital into low-income neighborhoods to make them more attractive to …

Anthropology and Geography
Calls to address social equity in ocean governance are expanding. Yet ‘equity’ is seldom clearly defined. Here we present a framework to support contextually-informed assessment of equity in ocean governance. Guiding questions include: (1) Where and (2) Why is equity being examined? (3) Equity for or amongst Whom? (4) What is being distributed? (5) When is equity considered? And (6) How do governance structures impact equity? The framework supports consistent operationalization of equity, challenges oversimplification, and allows evaluation of progress. It is a step toward securing the equitable ocean governance already reflected in national and international commitments.

From Physical Violence To Online Violation. Forms, Structures And Effects: A Comparison Of The Cases Of ‘Domestic Violence’ And ‘Revenge Pornography’, Matthew Hall, Jeff Hearn
From Physical Violence To Online Violation. Forms, Structures And Effects: A Comparison Of The Cases Of ‘Domestic Violence’ And ‘Revenge Pornography’, Matthew Hall, Jeff Hearn
psychology
In this paper, we examine the nature and limits of violence by way of a comparison of the physical violence and online violation, in terms of their form, structure and effects. We explore similarities and dissimilarities in what precedes the event, perpetrator intentions and motivations, the forms and types of violence, the medium through which they are delivered, who they are directed towards, the technologies and processes deployed, and their impacts. We argue that it is problematic to restrict the concept of ‘violence’ to intended physical acts that cause harm, because non-physical, psychological, emotional and other forms of non- (directly)physical …

Measuring The Success Of A Project Echo Implementation: Results From An International E‑Delphi Study, Perrin Moss, Nicole Hartley, Dana Newcomb, Trevor Russell
Project ECHO Bibliography
There is an increasing global need for organisations to utilise high-quality telementoring models to support workforce development and mentorship. Project ECHO is a validated telementoring model that has been adopted by over 700 organisations globally across multiple sectors. To date there is no consolidated list of success indicators by which organisational teams can assess or benchmark their implementation of Project ECHO across sectors. An e-Delphi methodology was adopted to facilitate a comprehensive means of identifying indicators that could be used to assess the implementations of Project ECHO globally. This paper presents a consolidated framework of indicators that support teams to …
Human Mobility, Hospitality, And Tourism Industries: A Perspective On Catastrophes, Asif Hussain
Human Mobility, Hospitality, And Tourism Industries: A Perspective On Catastrophes, Asif Hussain
Journal of Sustainability and Resilience
The coronavirus outbreak has resulted in a significant reduction in peoples’ movements, migration and trade at both local and global levels. Lockdowns and travel restrictions all over the world have led to a rapid retrenchment of the world’s hospitality and tourism sector. This is not new. Historically, catastrophes impacted human mobility. Drawing from the historical connections between catastrophes, especially health crises, this paper highlights the impacts of catastrophes on the hospitality and tourism industries. This research shows that the relationship between pandemic and tourism is turbulent, and it explores the implications of the current health crisis for the travel industry …

Marketing Transformation In Tourism Through Visual Ethnography, Isabel Coll-Barneto, Francesc Fusté-Forné
Journal of Sustainability and Resilience
This paper analyses the role of transformative tourism from the perspective of local establishments. The method is based on a visual ethnography study where 12 ecological accommodations located in Catalonia, north-eastern Spain, were asked to identify a photography that illustrates the philosophy of the establishments. Results discuss the meanings of the pictures focused on previous research in relation to the transformative facilitators. The physical, knowledge, social and psychological dimensions are analysed. The nature, the wood, and the relaxing areas are the most relevant elements provided by the hotels as part of their marketing strategy. Theoretical and practical implications are described.

Travel Behavior And Subjective Well-Being: Effects Of Travel, Activity, And Personal Factors, Jacquelyn O. Erinne
Theses and Dissertations
The overarching goal of this dissertation is to examine the complex trip-, activity-, and personal-level factors impacting individuals’ well-being. This is achieved through fulfilling three research objectives. The first objective examines the fluctuation of happiness induced by the influences of daily trip and activity factors. The second objective examines the sensitivity of affective well-being to trip and activity duration. The third objective evaluates the gender differences in trip- and activity-induced well-being. Three notable findings are discerned using trip and activity episodes as well as self-reported well-being of 357 participants collected by the Daynamica smartphone application in Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area …
(Re)Constructing Homescapes: “Archaeological Remote Sensing” And Ground-Truthing Of The Walker Place Homestead At Spirit Hill Farm, Tate County, Mississippi, Gabriel Griffin
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis focuses on an early nineteenth-century homestead known as the Walker Place homestead at Spirit Hill Farm in northern Mississippi. The goal of this thesis is to conduct a ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and shovel test survey to explore how changing landscapes simultaneously (re)create and destroy senses of place or Homescapes. Homescapes have received little attention in the field of archaeology and have not been applied to Euro-American Homescapes. I apply this theoretical construct in a novel way as a venture to further develop an avenue in archaeology to be collaborative and understand the past in a way that accurately …

Utilization Of A Boosted Regression Tree Framework For Prediction Of Dissolved Phosphorus Concentrations Throughout The High Plains Aquifer Region, Jeffrey M. Temple
Utilization Of A Boosted Regression Tree Framework For Prediction Of Dissolved Phosphorus Concentrations Throughout The High Plains Aquifer Region, Jeffrey M. Temple
Theses and Dissertations
Groundwater-derived phosphorus has often been dismissed as a significant contributor towards surface water eutrophication, however, this dismissal is unwarranted, making the quantification of phosphorus concentrations in groundwater systems immensely important. Machine learning models have been employed to quantify the concentrations of various contaminants in groundwater, but to our best knowledge have never been used for the quantification of groundwater phosphorus. The goal of this research was to use a boosted regression tree framework to produce the first believed machine learning model of phosphorus variability in groundwater, with the High Plains aquifer serving as the study area. Results display a boosted …

A Christian Perspective On Islam's Origins: Its Religion, Founder, And Practices, German Matos
Masters Theses
The many years of exposure to Islamic believers in the five boroughs of New York State, but more specifically, the Bronx, set a precedent for this thesis to comprehensively analyze the religion of Islam by investigating the Abrahamic monotheistic connection to its historical origins and religious practices. The methods used in this thesis to prove Islam’s legitimacy as an Abrahamic monotheistic heir consisted of sources like the Qur’an, hadith, and tafsir texts translated from Arabic into English. The simultaneous usage of Jewish, Christian, Islamic, and authoritative secular sources was used to scrutinize Islam’s theological and historical claims to formulate a …

U.S. Financial Literacy: Does Urban-Rural Residency Matter?, Mckenzie Leanne Carvalho
Theses and Dissertations
Financial illiteracy broadly affects people’s financial and economic well-being. The purpose of this thesis is to identify how the magnitudes of financial literacy determinants change under different residency settings. A county-level calculation of financial literacy is created, and logit and negative binomial regressions are employed to compare the relationship between demographic variables and financial literacy in metro/non-metro and urban/rural counties. Data on individual’s financial knowledge and personal characteristics is obtained from the FINRA National Financial Capability Study. Urban and rural residency is determined using USDA ERS Rural-Urban Continuum Codes and the Index of Relative Rurality. These results provide an improved …
The Level Of Burnout And Job Satisfaction Among Mississippi Agriculture Educators And The Potential Level Of Impact From The Covid-19 Pandemic, Anna Hollis
Theses and Dissertations
Many states across the country have felt the impact of a nationwide teacher shortage. Specifically, the state of Mississippi has experienced a shortage of certified agricultural education teachers. Unfortunately, during a time, a novel virus (Coronavirus or COVID-19) swept the entire world and shook the academic world to its core. Like the majority, educators were encouraged to adopt a variety of approaches to better flow with the changes in their “normal” routines. Many researchers have suggested that teachers are leaving education due to little resources, recognition, and high job demands, which correlates to poor job satisfaction and symptoms of burnout. …

Abstract
Climate change threatens agriculture worldwide, and coffee farming is especially vulnerable. This is apparent in El Salvador, a Central American coffee producing country, previously a prominent player in the field. Due to climate change impacts, as well as social, economic, political, cultural, and institutional issues, the country has been struggling during the last three decades to remain in the coffee industry in a way that is sustainable for the environment and for people. This study aimed to identify the ways in which coffee cultivation in El Salvador has contributed to or detracted from the ability of farmers to achieve …

The Stamford Experience In The Twenty-First Century: Analyzing Urban Development Conflict At The Neighborhood Level, Michael Hernandez
Honors Scholar Theses
At a time when mid-size cities around the country are growing rapidly and taking on all kinds of development, it is important for scholars to understand residents’ views on development. This paper reviews some of the extant literature on urban development conflict, with a focus on the legacy of urban renewal, models of citizen participation, urban redevelopment, and the back-to- the-city movement towards an understanding of resident opposition to development. The literature review also helped create a framework to answer three questions: (1) what is (or are) the central conflict(s) over urban development in Stamford, Connecticut since 2007, (2) considering …
