Spatial Analysis Of Seven Islands In Indonesia To Determine Stunting Hotspots, Tiopan Sipahutar, Tris Eryando, Meiwita Budiharsana
Kesmas
Indonesia is a vast country struggling to reduce its stunting prevalence. Hence, identifying priority areas is urgent. In determining areas to prioritize, one needs to consider geographical issues, particularly correlations among areas. This study aimed to discover whether stunting prevalence in Indonesia occurs randomly or in clusters; and, if it occurs in clusters, which areas are the hotspots. This ecological study used aggregate data from the 2018 National Basic Health Research and Poverty Data and Information Report from the Statistics Indonesia. This study analyzed 514 districts/cities across 34 provinces on seven main islands in Indonesia. The method used was the …

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development
The Pademawu coast has rapidly transformed into salt ponds, causing seawater intrusion and pollution. This study aims to examine the quality of groundwater in the surrounding settlement area of Pademawu and assess its eligibility for daily use. The psychochemical parameters of groundwater are measured in situ. Groundwater samples from several stations are analyzed in the laboratory and used to collect several chemical compounds, including Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, HCO3-, Cl-, SO42-, Fe2+, Mn2+, F-, NO2-, NO3, and CaCO3. The detected concentrations are then used to calculate TH, sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), %Na, PI, KR, and MH. Hydrochemical calculation and interpretation …
Spatial Analysis For Enhancing The Use Of Health Data Availability From Different Sources To Help The Decision-Making Process, Tris Eryando
Spatial Analysis For Enhancing The Use Of Health Data Availability From Different Sources To Help The Decision-Making Process, Tris Eryando
Kesmas
Spatial analysis in public health has become a common method used by researchers to understand the distribution of public health aspects related to the surrounding environment. It can also be used to analyze individual information in the form of a dot and the location or line of aggregated information in a specific area of study. Another benefit is the possibility of using different data sources to be analyzed in one statistical model analysis, as long as the identification area is sufficiently clear as a key variable. Spatial analysis can show an object's distribution on a locational map and explain the …

This project attempts to bridge two strands of literary studies not typically in conversation with one another. On one hand, literary disciplinary histories have tended to focus on novels as a primary source material for telling a story about higher education but have dismissed the utility of poetry for institutional critique. On the other hand, scholars of African American literature have long recognized Black Arts Movement poets’ centrality to the formation of black institutions and their impact on African American literary criticism but have been less interested in exploring disciplinary concerns prior to the formation of Black Studies. This dissertation …

Using Plot Photographs To Estimate Tundra Vegetation Cover In Northern Alaska, Hana Christoffersen
Using Plot Photographs To Estimate Tundra Vegetation Cover In Northern Alaska, Hana Christoffersen
Masters Theses
Plot photography can provide a quick, robust method to measure vegetation, especially in polar environments where logistics can be expensive and challenging. The success and widespread adoption of plot photography in the Arctic hinges on the accuracy of image analysis and data product interpretation. The relative cover of eight vegetation classes was estimated using a point frame and digital camera across thirty, 1-m2 plots at Utqiaġvik, Alaska from 2012 to 2021. Geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA) was applied to generate objects and classify the three band (red, green, blue) images. Machine learning classifiers (random forest, gradient boosted model, classification …

Benetton’S (In)Equality: A Semiotic Reading, Hianly Muljadi, Sonny Angjaya, Joanna Deborah
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
United Colors of Benetton, or UCB, has been using its advertisements to deliver positive messages and values that the clothing company represents. This article analyzes one of the photographs in Benetton’s campaign for their Spring Summer Collection of 2018. The campaign, which consists of some photographs by Oliviero Toscani, raises the theme of equality of gender and ethnicity. It shows various photographs of both female and male models from different ethnicities. However, it is found that there is one photograph that shows inconsistency with the very value that Benetton wants to convey through their campaign. Based on the semiotic analysis, …

A Review Of The Cultural Gender Norms Contributing To Gender Inequality In Ghana: An Ecological Systems Perspective, Portia Nartey, Ozge Sensoy Bahar, Proscovia Nabunya
Journal of International Women's Studies
While significant progress has been made in improving the wellbeing of women and girls around the world, a gender gap still exists between men and women which is very evident in Ghana. Gender inequalities continue to persist in Ghana because of cultural gender norms that exalt and favor men and put women in subordinate and subservient roles. These cultural gender norms hinder women’s development and widen gender inequality between men and women in different system levels of society. Therefore, there is a need to examine the influence of these cultural gender norms on women’s lives using a systems framework to …

Towards New Pedagogical Practices In Times Of Covid: Distance Education As A Mark Of Resilience In The Moroccan University, Abdelfettah Nacer Idrissi
BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
Affected, like most countries in the world, by the covid-19 pandemic which has affected all sectors of activity, Morocco has proposed, as part of a policy of prevention and anticipation. The measures including the objective is not only to limit the spread of covid but also and above all to ensure educational continuity and the transition from face-to-face teaching to distance learning. However, not having, like the majority of countries, a prior strategy to deal with this disaster situation, the concept of the resilience of education systems was not yet included in public policies. This fact did not prevent the …

From Trauma To Resilience: The Cases Of Beirut Syndrome By Alexandre Najjar And Beirut 2020 Diary Of A Collapse By Charif Majdalani (Comparative Study), Ilham Slim-Hoteit, Lama Farhat
BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
This study is an attempt to think, interpret and analyze the concept of resilience and to study the factors and mechanisms that result from it under the influence of historical, psychic, social and cultural challenges. Boris Cyrulnik defines resilience as a "biological, psycho-affective, social and cultural process that allows a new development after psychic trauma". It is thus presented as an experience that can only be lived after going through various shocks, turbulences and disturbances, whether individual or collective. The two novels of Alexandre Najjar Le syndrome de Beyrouth and Charif Majdalani Beyrouth 2020 Journal d'un effondrement seem to offer …

Centers Of Community: A Spatial Analysis Of The Mid-19th Century Populaton Residing On Beacon Hill, Boston, Ma, Justin Malcolm
Graduate Masters Theses
The first Black church constructed in Boston, and the oldest extant Black church building in America, the African Meeting House was located on the North Slope of Beacon Hill; the predominant residence of Boston’s Black population during the nineteenth century. The African Meeting House has been the subject of several important archaeological investigations. In 1840, a schism within the African Meeting House congregation resulted in the establishment of the Twelfth Baptist Church. Historical contexts suggest that this neighborhood was highly segregated. A geographic and statistical analysis of the unique 1850 Boston City Census, which was made to yield spatial contexts …

This study investigates the speaking anxiety levels of EFL students enrolled in English medium classes (EMI) in a private university. Factors causing students’ speaking anxiety and potential strategies to reduce the speaking anxiety were also examined. Eighty-nine EMI students from ten undergraduate study programs were the respondents of this study. Data were collected by using Horwitz et al.’s (1986) anxiety survey. Findings showed that EMI students exhibited low-level English-speaking anxiety. The cross-tabulation data demonstrated that students perceived comprehension apprehension as the paramount anxiety factor. To reduce their comprehension apprehension, students prefer their lecturers not to over-react their speaking mistakes and …

2020-Current year OA Pubs
Hydraulic fracturing or fracking has led to a rapid growth of oil and gas production in the United States, but the impact of fracking on public health is an important but underresearched topic. We designed a methodology to study spatiotemporal correlations between the risk of fracking and stroke mortality. An annualized loss expectancy (ALE) model is applied to quantify the risk of fracking. The geographically and temporally weighted regression (GTWR) model is used to analyze spatiotemporal correlations of stroke mortality, fracking ALE, and nine other socioeconomic- and health-related factors. The analysis shows that fracking ALE is moderately correlated with stroke …

Indonesian Journal of International Law
Geostationary Orbit (GSO) located above the equator is deemed as limited resources with strategic position for satellites in outer space. As today, the majority who possess GSO slots are non-equatorial states, in this context developed countries. The distribution of orbital slots in the GSO has been discussed among scholars from the developing states for decades. In the past, the developing states ever formed the “Bogota Declaration” aimed to ensure the developing states possess special rights over the GSO slot. The declaration arose from the distribution of the GSO slot by unequal treatment and dissatisfaction to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) …

Socioeconomic Status, Health, And Health Behaviours Of School-Aged Adolescents : The Psychosocial Mechanisms Of Social Capital, Evelyn Aboagye Addae
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
Psychosocial social capital is advocated as a protective health asset and a non-monetary safety net that protect adolescents’ developmental outcomes against effects of socioeconomic inequalities. This study utilised advanced mixed research methods, and socioecological and health asset approaches to offer evidence on social capital’s psychosocial mechanisms and pathways through which socioeconomic status (SES) affects adolescents’ health and health behaviours. This is to offer appropriate policy and practice proposals in Ghana. The quantitative and qualitative studies respectively employed a multi-stage stratified cross-sectional survey data of 2,068 and 54 in-school Ghanaian adolescents (13-18yrs) in focus group discussions. Various univariate and bivariate (cross-tabulation-Chi …

Conceptualising Work As A ‘Safe Space’ For Negotiating Lgbt Identities: Navigating Careers In The Construction Sector, Sarah Barnard, Andrew Dainty, Sian Lewis, Andreas Culora
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
Despite sustained focus in recent years on understanding the experiences of underrepresented groups in construction, there has been a paucity of work that has explored the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) workers. Research has shown homophobia is commonplace in the construction industry and very few gay employees feel able to be open about their sexuality. Using qualitative data garnered from 16 in-depth interviews and a focus group with LGBT workers in the UK construction sector, this article analyses how participants negotiate identities at work and navigate their careers. Drawing on the concept of heteronormativity we consider how …

The state grants residents who live within a school district’s border an ownership interest in that district’s schools. This interest includes the power to exclude nonresidents. To attend school in a school district, a child must prove that she lives at an in-district address and is a bona fide resident. But in highly-sought-after districts and schools, establishing a child’s bona fide residence may be highly contested.
In this Essay, I show that education law, policies, and practices fail to recognize a child’s residence when the child’s family and living situation do not comport with a particular ideal of family life. …
Property Law And Inequality: Lessons From Racially Restrictive Covenants, Carol M. Rose
Property Law And Inequality: Lessons From Racially Restrictive Covenants, Carol M. Rose
Northwestern University Law Review
A long-standing justification for the institution of property is that it encourages effort and planning, enabling not only individual wealth creation but, indirectly, wealth creation for an entire society. Equal opportunity is a precondition for this happy outcome, but some have argued that past inequalities of opportunity have distorted wealth distribution in contemporary America. This article explores the possible role of property law in such a distortion, using the historical example of racially restrictive covenants in the first half of the twentieth century. I will argue that the increasing professionalization and standardization of real estate practices in that era included …
Eviction Court Displacement Rates, Nicole Summers
Eviction Court Displacement Rates, Nicole Summers
Northwestern University Law Review
This Essay introduces the concept of eviction court displacement rates, defined as the percentage of eviction filings that result in tenant displacement. The Essay argues that a jurisdiction’s eviction court displacement rate provides crucial insight into the role of its legal system in driving substantive eviction outcomes. The Essay then compiles existing data on court displacement rates and compares those rates across jurisdictions. This comparison reveals massive variation in court displacement rates nationwide. In some jurisdictions, a tenant’s likelihood of displacement upon receiving an eviction filing is approximately one in twenty. In other jurisdictions, it is higher than one in …

Developing A Model To Assess Feasible Capacity To Work-From-Home, Ryan Tripod, Sumarie Roodt
African Conference on Information Systems and Technology
With the growing popularity of Work-From-Home (WFH) organizations have been required to adapt their ‘ways of working’ strategies to the ‘new normal’, as both employees and organizations aim to reap the benefits of WFH. This has resulted in organizations and their leadership teams needing to create WFH strategies for their organizations. With many of these WFH strategies developed in isolation of all stakeholders, with the feasibility of these WFH strategies remain uncertain. Therefore, this research task has reviewed literature to develop a conceptual model that describes how leadership teams can make informed feasible WFH strategy decisions, through the concept of …

The Epistemology Of Complexity And "Doing" Interdisciplinarity, Sharon Woodill
Interface: The C3 Lab Knowledge Commons
Complexity is now well established as the driver of interdisciplinarity, but what this means for how knowledge is ‘done’ within Interdisciplinary Studies has not been well developed. This paper examines the theory of complexity and unpacks its epistemological implications for doing interdisciplinary work. The epistemology of complexity demands a cognitive toolkit that includes such things as open-mindedness, tolerance of uncertainty and ambiguity, and intellectual courage. This paper draws out these connections and suggests implications for curriculum development in Interdisciplinary Studies.
