Citational Practices As A Site Of Resistance And Radical Pedagogy: Positioning The Multiply Marginalized And Underrepresented (Mmu) Scholar Database As An Infrastructural Intervention, Cana Uluak Itchuaqiyaq, Jordan Frith Oct 2022

Citational Practices As A Site Of Resistance And Radical Pedagogy: Positioning The Multiply Marginalized And Underrepresented (Mmu) Scholar Database As An Infrastructural Intervention, Cana Uluak Itchuaqiyaq, Jordan Frith

Publications

Discursive infrastructures are forms of writing that remain mostly invisible but shape higher-level practices built upon their base. This article argues that citational practices are a form of discursive infrastructure that are bases that shape our work. Most importantly, we argue that the infrastructural base built through citation practices is in a moment of breakdown as increasing amounts of people call for more just citational practices that surface multiply marginalized and underrepresented (MMU) scholar voices. Consequently, this article both theorizes citations as infrastructure while also focusing on a case study of the MMU scholar database to help build a more …

State Of The Northwest Arkansas Region 2022 Report, Mervin Jebaraj

State of the Northwest Arkansas Region Report

The State of the Northwest Arkansas Region Report is an annual publication, commissioned by the Northwest Arkansas Council, that serves as a tool for evaluating economic performance. In July 2018, the Northwest Arkansas Council created a new blueprint for development in which Northwest Arkansas is benchmarked with other contemporary, high-performing regions, namely Austin, Des Moines, Madison, Durham-Chapel Hill, Raleigh and Provo-Orem.

The 2022 report compares Northwest Arkansas with these geographies in gross domestic product, employment, unemployment, establishment growth, median household income, average annual wages, poverty, educational attainment, research and development, homeownership costs, commuting time, and average domestic airfares. The following …

A Semiparametric Efficient Approach To Label Shift Estimation And Quantification, Brandon Tse Wei Chow Oct 2022

A Semiparametric Efficient Approach To Label Shift Estimation And Quantification, Brandon Tse Wei Chow

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Transfer Learning is an area of statistics and machine learning research that seeks answers to the following question: how do we build successful learning algorithms when the data available for training our model is qualitatively different from the data we hope the model will perform well on? In this thesis, we focus on a specific area of Transfer Learning called label shift, also known as quantification. In quantification, the aforementioned discrepancy is isolated to a shift in the distribution of the response variable. In such a setting, accurately inferring the response variable’s new distribution is both an important estimation task …

A History Of The Ottoman Atlas: The Material Culture Of Geographical Knowledge In The Ottoman Empire, Isin Taylan Cakmak Oct 2022

A History Of The Ottoman Atlas: The Material Culture Of Geographical Knowledge In The Ottoman Empire, Isin Taylan Cakmak

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

“A History of the Ottoman Atlas: The Material Culture of Geographical Knowledge in the Ottoman Empire” examines the material manifestations of scientific changes in the Ottoman reading world. Looking at the relationship between the atlas and geography, it argues that the transformation of the material form of the atlas informed Ottoman intellectuals’ understanding of the scope and methodology of geographical knowledge. Early Ottoman atlases adhered to centuries-old traditions of cosmographies and topographical histories, which were predominantly textual. This dissertation investigates the cartographical changes taking place against the backdrop of a manuscript culture and examines the visual and material changes in …

State Of Denial: Aids Denialism, Treatment Activism, And The Fight Over Antiretrovirals, Lindsay Zafir Oct 2022

State Of Denial: Aids Denialism, Treatment Activism, And The Fight Over Antiretrovirals, Lindsay Zafir

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation puts gender and sexuality at the center of transnational contests over the meaning of biomedical citizenship in the late 20th century. State of Denial tracks the loose coalition of gay activists, HIV-positive mothers, libertarians, scientists, and South African officials that formed around the idea that AIDS is caused by promiscuous sex, poverty, and drug use, including antiretrovirals, rather than HIV. AIDS denialism emerged amidst a radical transformation in the boundaries of expertise, spurred by the women’s health, gay liberation, and alternative medicine movements; New Left counter-culturalism and anti-capitalism; right-wing anti-statism; the rise of the internet; and the politics …

Robots That Tutor In Complex And Dynamic Environments, Nicole Salomons Oct 2022

Robots That Tutor In Complex And Dynamic Environments, Nicole Salomons

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Robots have shown great promise in being effective tutors for both children andadults. For instance, they have been shown to be successful in math tutoring for children [203], interruptions training for adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder [204], and assisting the elderly while exercising [87]. Yet, despite the great potential of tutoring robots, most studies have focused on providing short-term tutoring either in a laboratory or a school while the researcher is present. For robots to be more broadly successful, users need to be able to practice skills on a more prolonged basis and in the wild. This requires robotic systems …

Parenting Experiences And Outcomes Among Former Adolescent Mothers: A Mixed Methods Study, Serena Flaherty Oct 2022

Parenting Experiences And Outcomes Among Former Adolescent Mothers: A Mixed Methods Study, Serena Flaherty

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Adverse outcomes for adolescent mothers and their children are significant, often resulting in long-term health inequities. Women who have a first child in adolescence face concurrent demands of parenting and complex developmental demands. Supportive interventions, such as early home visiting programs (EHV), promote positive and nurturing parenting. Minding the Baby® (MTB) is an EHV program designed to improve parenting outcomes among young mothers living in medically underserved communities. The MTB intervention (from pregnancy through the child’s second birthday) was tested through two 2-group randomized controlled trials (RCT; 2002-2016). In the MTB early school-age (ESA) follow-up study (2016-2018), researchers described associations …

Analyzing The Trophic Structure Of Ancient Communities, Jack Oliver Shaw Oct 2022

Analyzing The Trophic Structure Of Ancient Communities, Jack Oliver Shaw

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Since the proliferation of animal life during the Cambrian (ca. 541-485 million years ago), the biosphere has changed considerably, including long-term trends towards increasing taxonomic and functional diversity within and across ecosystems. Whether and how long-term trends in the evolution of life affected the Earth system is an active area of research, in part because the function and dynamics of ecosystems cannot be inferred by simply summing up the effect of all individuals present. Instead, the effect of diversity on ecosystem-level properties is modulated by the network of links between individuals, including trophic (e.g., predator-prey) and non-trophic (e.g., symbiosis and …

"Unable To Find Any Trace Of Her": Black Women, Genealogies Of Escape, And Alabama Prisons, 1920 - 1950, Micah Grace Khater

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This is a history of Black women’s experiences within, around, and outside of the perimeters of the southern carceral regime. Through an expansive case study of Alabama through the post-World War I moment, the interwar years, the Great Depression, Great Migration, the New Deal, and the infrastructural modernization in the post-World War II moment, this dissertation examines the relationship that carcerality forged between space and time. From penitentiaries, penal camps, and jails, incarcerated Black women challenged the boundaries of carcerality in the rural and urban South. In response, the state ritualized recapture as a mode of epistemological, ontological, and genealogical …

Ancient Andean Archipelagos: Human Interaction And Social Innovation At Chawin Punta And Kunturay In The East-Central Highlands Of Pasco, Peru, Nicholas E. Brown Oct 2022

Ancient Andean Archipelagos: Human Interaction And Social Innovation At Chawin Punta And Kunturay In The East-Central Highlands Of Pasco, Peru, Nicholas E. Brown

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation studies the dynamic relationship between interaction and innovation in ancient Peru, where archipelagos of social movement developed among groups of people living in distant regions of the Central Andes and Amazon. The earliest development of these archipelagic societies can be traced to the rise of the Chavín phenomenon in the 2nd and 1st millennia B.C.E., when monumental platforms and plazas were built across the Andes to accommodate large gatherings of people for new kinds of civic and ceremonial events. Although the people who gathered at Chavin monuments had different cultural backgrounds and geographic origins, their collective experiences forged …

The Time Has Come For Digital Explosive Ordnance Risk Education, Robin Toal

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

The increase in the number of civilian casualties from landmines and other explosive ordnance (EO) in recent years has driven the demand for new and innovative ways to provide communities with risk education. Additionally, with access limited by the COVID-19 pandemic, humanitarian organizations like MAG (Mines Advisory Group) have had to adapt their approach, focusing on digital explosive ordnance risk education (EORE) to reach individuals and communities affected by EO.

A Genealogy Of Social Geomedia: The Life, Death, And (Possible) Afterlife Of Location-Based Social Networks, Jordan Frith Oct 2022

A Genealogy Of Social Geomedia: The Life, Death, And (Possible) Afterlife Of Location-Based Social Networks, Jordan Frith

Publications

In the early 2010s, location-based social networks (LBSNs) received significant attention from both the public and venture capital. The “LBSN moment” was an important period of early mobile geomedia history, and this article argues that the reverberations of that moment still shape the contemporary social geomedia landscape. This article examines the LBSN moment through a media genealogy approach that views the period as a moment of juncture for the development of social location-sharing, which ended up being dominated by large platforms like Facebook and Uber. The article also draws from research on technological development to push back against narratives of …

Teaching Energy Economics In The Gcc: A Synergistic Approach Between Engineering And Economics, Yishu Zhou, Joseph D. Smith, Gregory M. Gelles

Economics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Issues related to safe and abundant energy production have been prominent in recent years. This is particularly true when society considers how to increase the quality of life by providing low-cost energy to citizens. A significant concern of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) relates to the environmental effects of energy production and energy use associated with climate change. Efforts to reduce fossil fuel use and increase the use of renewable energy, together with the price volatility of fossil fuels, have seriously impacted the economics of many oil-producing countries, particularly the Gulf States, which has led to efforts to make their …
