“Khi Mô Về?” (When Will You Go Home?) Evocative Autoethnography On Death, Impermanence, And Time-Space Extension, Kien Nguyen-Trung

The Qualitative Report

This article is motivated by my personal wish to pay tribute to my beloved grandfather, who passed away during the COVID-19 pandemic while I was stranded in Australia. Relying on an evocative autoethnography of a grandson, a father, a PhD candidate and graduate, and a researcher, and in reference to the concepts of place-making theories such as time-space expansion, I tried to embrace my experience of grief and loss as well as to make sense of my feelings of distance, impermanence, and death during this chaotic period. The story I will tell below chronicles my emotional and spiritual journey from …

Spatialization Of Oppression, N Bobic, Farzaneh Haghighi Oct 2022

Spatialization Of Oppression, N Bobic, Farzaneh Haghighi

School of Art, Design and Architecture

For architecture and the urban to have relevance in the 21st Century, we cannot merely reignite the approaches of thought and design that were operative in the last century. Moreover, we can no longer afford to reduce them to a neutral backdrop of political realities. Architecture and urban space should be understood as political forces in and of themselves. There is explicit evidence of the inherent role that architecture and the urban play in numerous human-made crises, including but not limited to ongoing and unprecedented global problems – from the refugee crisis, the US-Mexico border, terrorist attacks, detention camps, numerous …

Analysis Of Functionality Of Statistical Data In Geovisualization Of Population Dynamics, L Gulyamova, M Sh Shafkarova, D N. Rakhmonov

Technical science and innovation

The article deals with the analysis of population density with the help of geo information programs, the process of visualization of the integration of statistical and geographical data, the structure of the technological sequence. One of the methods for describing the relative productivity of land data is considered. Geo information systems can support the decision-making process in the design and selection phase with limited capabilities, and these systems provide a very static modeling environment. This limits their scope as a decision support tool, especially at stages where collaborative problem solving decisions are required.

Primitive Accumulation And Multinational Corporations: The Evolution Of Dispossession And Exploitation In The Rubber Industry, Matthew Rochat

The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development

I examine how the process of primitive accumulation has led to evolving forms of dispossession and exploitation carried out by multinational corporations in the rubber industry. After a brief review of relevant literature, I outline a novel analytical approach to multinational corporations engaged in natural resource extraction, referred to as the Parasitic Extraction Model. I then demonstrate this approach using three case studies. The first, Leopold II’s Congo, showcases the barbaric underpinnings of primitive accumulation in the rubber industry in its crudest form. The subsequent section shifts to the interwar period with Fordlândia in the Brazilian Amazon where I analyze …

Thoracic aortic aneurysms involving the root and/or the ascending aorta enlarge over time until an acute tear in the intimal layer leads to a highly fatal condition, an acute aortic dissection (AAD). These Stanford type A AADs, in which the tear occurs above the sinotubular junction, leading to the formation of a false lumen in the aortic wall that may extend to the arch and thoracoabdominal aorta. Type B AADs originate in the descending thoracic aorta just distal to the left subclavian artery. Genetic variants and various environmental conditions that disrupt the aortic wall integrity have been identified that increase …
