Artistic Novelties Or Political Tools? Circulating Cold War Art Exhibitions In Finland, Maija Koskinen
Artistic Novelties Or Political Tools? Circulating Cold War Art Exhibitions In Finland, Maija Koskinen
Artl@s Bulletin
The cultural Cold War was a global phenomenon, but how was it fought in Finland, on the periphery of Northern Europe? The essay brings a previously insufficiently known Finnish perspective into the study of cultural Cold War by introducing a research project, Mission Finland – Cold War cultural diplomacy at the cross roads of East and West, 1945–1991. The essay discusses study methods of international art exhibitions as soft power and introduces – with concrete Finnish examples – the concept of “state- run exhibition” as a means to comprehend the role of circulating art exhibitions as Cold War cultural …

Exhibiting Art In A European Periphery? International Art In Sweden During The Cold War, Katarina Wadstein Macleod, Marta Edling, Pella Myrstener
Artl@s Bulletin
The project Exhibiting Art in a European Periphery? International Art in Sweden during the Cold War aimed to investigate international exhibitions in Sweden during the postwar period from circa 1945 to the end of the 1980s. The main objective was to find information beyond preconceived ideas of what is important, interesting, or simply good art. In this article, we present our method for searching through the archives and some of the findings and insights generated.

Art Contre/Against Apartheid At Lunds Konsthall: An Entangled History Of Art And Solidarity From Paris To Pretoria, Katarina Wadstein Macleod
Artl@s Bulletin
This article concerns the international touring exhibition Art contre/against Apartheid originating in France and which reached Lunds konsthall, Sweden in 1984 and was to tour the world for ten years. The aim with this exhibition was to raise awareness of the apartheid regime, cause international protest and ultimately remove the repressive political system. Using histoire croisée as a method this article investigates the different interests and stake-holders in the exhibition at Lunds konsthall, including the critique of the exhibition as resting on white supremacy. The purpose of the article is to locate the different intersections regarding international art, international politics …
The Afterlife Of Danish Modern: Design Exhibition In Moscow, 1969–70, Yulia Karpova
The Afterlife Of Danish Modern: Design Exhibition In Moscow, 1969–70, Yulia Karpova
Artl@s Bulletin
The exhibition Contemporary Danish Design arrived in Moscow in December 1969, when Danish design was undergoing a crisis. The popularity of “Danish Modern,” the notion centered on excellent artisanship, natural materials, and a balance between tradition and modernity, was diminishing due to shifting tastes in home furnishing and consumer society critiques. This article considers the Moscow exhibition as a twin effort to include design in Danish- Soviet cultural diplomacy and to revive the cultural importance of Danish Modern in the era of waning techno-optimism and student protests.
Charting The Beyond. On The Two “First” International Surrealist Exhibitions In Scandinavia, Andrea Kollnitz
Charting The Beyond. On The Two “First” International Surrealist Exhibitions In Scandinavia, Andrea Kollnitz
Artl@s Bulletin
This article examines two exhibitions introducing international surrealism in the North: Paris 1932 in Stockholm 1932 and Kubisme = Surrealisme in Copenhagen in 1935. Focusing on contents, networks and agents, the analysis shows competitive negotiations of national and local identities in interaction with the promotion of surrealism as a universal international phenomenon. Using a decentralising approach, the article reflects on the role of Paris and other cities as stations as well as elucidates national, transnational and transcultural processes and interactions in the international dissemination of surrealism.

Portwest’S Future Strategy: Fashionising Workwear – Threading The Needle, Fiachra Coll, Damian O'Reilly
Portwest’S Future Strategy: Fashionising Workwear – Threading The Needle, Fiachra Coll, Damian O'Reilly
Case Studies
Portwest- should they further pursue the leisurewear / workwear market or should they focus on expanding the current range?
Portwest is a global manufacturer and innovator of workwear, safetywear and Personal protective equipment (PPE) and one of the fastest growing workwear companies in the world. Recently, the company launched an “Inspired Workwear” collection targeting the leisurewear/workwear market. It is a departure from their traditional markets where their acquisition strategy has seen Portwest rapidly gain market share. Management are concerned that this new departure may take resources from the core business of Workwear and dilute key resources.

Guanylyl Cyclase C As A Diagnostic And Therapeutic Target In Colorectal Cancer, Adi Caspi, Ariana A. Entezari, Madison Crutcher, Adam E. Snook, Scott A. Waldman
Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics Faculty Papers
Colorectal cancer remains a major cause of mortality in the USA, despite advances in prevention and screening. Existing therapies focus primarily on generic treatment such as surgical intervention and chemotherapy, depending on disease severity. As personalized medicine and targeted molecular oncology continue to develop as promising treatment avenues, there has emerged a need for effective targets and biomarkers of colorectal cancer. The transmembrane receptor guanylyl cyclase C (GUCY2C) regulates intestinal homeostasis and has emerged as a tumor suppressor. Further, it is universally expressed in advanced metastatic colorectal tumors, as well as other cancer types that arise through intestinal metaplasia. In …
Count On Me?: Explore The Effect Of Covid-19 City Out-Migration On The 2020 Census: A Case Study On New York City, Clara Fong
Undergraduate Research (Journal)
The United States’ decennial census is the gold standard for enumerating the country’s population. Its data are used by private developers as well as federal and state governments to efficiently allocate federal resources, determine Congressional representation, and provide access to public safety and emergency preparedness (Why We Conduct the Decennial Census). Historically, the census has seen the lowest response rates from low-income populations, communities of color, foreign-born populations, and children (O’hare, 2019). However, early reports on the 2020 Census uncovered that in major metropolitan cities, notably in New York City, these may not be the only undercounted groups. Historically high-income, …

In A Double-Bind: Time-Space Distanciation, Socioeconomic Status, And Coping With Financial Stress In The United States, Harrison J. Schmitt, Adeena L. Black, Lucas A. Keefer, Daniel Sullivan
Faculty Publications
Psychological research has shown that lower socioeconomic status (SES) individuals experience higher levels of stress and tend to cope in more present-oriented ways. While some research in the field has sought to, for instance, increase future-oriented ways of being among lower SES individuals, we argue that such approaches may come at significant cost. We consider the construct of time–space distanciation (TSD) – the normative way in which time and space are abstracted from one another at cultural and individual levels – as a way to complicate psychological research on social class, stress, and coping. Across four studies, we present research …
Event-Related Potentials Of Individuals With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Performing The Attention Network Task, P. Dennis Rodriguez, Justin E. Stauffacher
Event-Related Potentials Of Individuals With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Performing The Attention Network Task, P. Dennis Rodriguez, Justin E. Stauffacher
Midwest Social Sciences Journal
The current study sought to investigate the neural basis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) by examining the performance of individuals with ADHD on the Attentional Networks Test (ANT) by Fan, McCandliss, Sommer, Raz, and Posner (2002), while recording electroencephalography (EEG) utilizing event-related potentials (ERP) methodology. Fifty-seven university students were divided into three groups: control, ADHD-inattentive subtype (ADHD-IA), and ADHD-combined/hyperactive impulsive subtype (ADHD-C/HI). The average peak amplitudes of the P300 waveform for each group were compared and analyzed for performance on each attention network measured by the ANT: the alerting network, the orienting network, and the executive control network. The average P3 …
Understanding The Effects Of Test-Optional Policies On Structural Diversity In U.S. Selective Institutions: A Difference-In-Differences Approach, Li Kang
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Postsecondary institutions, especially selective ones, use standardized tests such as SAT and ACT as important indicators to measure applicants' academic abilities. However, many studies have found that the test scores correlate to applicants' racial/ethnic backgrounds. Selective institutions work hard to secure their diverse classes. Hence, more selective institutions expect to improve diversity by implementing the test-optional policy. Can this policy meet their expectations in terms of diversity? The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the effects of the test-optional policy on the structural diversity of selective postsecondary institutions. This dissertation uses quasi-experimental techniques to assess the relationship between test-optional …

Viruses In Astrobiology, Ignacio De La Higuera, Ester Lázaro
Viruses In Astrobiology, Ignacio De La Higuera, Ester Lázaro
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Viruses are the most abundant biological entities on Earth, and yet, they have not received enough consideration in astrobiology. Viruses are also extraordinarily diverse, which is evident in the types of relationships they establish with their host, their strategies to store and replicate their genetic information and the enormous diversity of genes they contain. A viral population, especially if it corresponds to a virus with an RNA genome, can contain an array of sequence variants that greatly exceeds what is present in most cell populations. The fact that viruses always need cellular resources to multiply means that they establish very …

Reconstructing Culture: Seasonal Labour Migration And The Cultural Geographies Of Social Change In Rural Western India, Pronoy Rai
International & Global Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper focuses on seasonal labour migration in rural India to examine how migrant returnees sought to reconstitute historical and hierarchical social relations in their home villages. I use qualitative research conducted in Maharashtra state in western India from 2014-15 among landowning farmers, landless returnees, and nonmigrant laborers. I demonstrate that for the returnees, an important element of social and cultural change in their home communities was their ability to upend and replace 'residual culture,' based on expectations of continued exploitation and performative hierarchy, with an 'emergent' one. I claim that the mechanics of counter-hegemony in rural Maharashtra includes a …

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the United States was facing an epidemic of opioid overdose deaths, clouding accurate inferences about the impact of the pandemic at the population level. We sought to determine the existence of increases in the trends of opioid-related overdose (ORO) deaths in the Greater Houston metropolitan area from January 2015 through December 2021, and to describe the social vulnerability present in the geographic location of these deaths. We merged records from the county medical examiner's office with social vulnerability indexes (SVIs) for the region and present geospatial locations of the aggregated ORO deaths. Time series analyses …

From Mcdonaldization To Place-Based Experience: Revitalizing Outdoor Education In Ireland, John Pierce, John Telford
From Mcdonaldization To Place-Based Experience: Revitalizing Outdoor Education In Ireland, John Pierce, John Telford
Publications
Outdoor education in Ireland, as in many countries, takes place in a variety of physical locations ranging from urban to wilder, minimally human influenced environments. Irish public outdoor education providers have traditionally placed little emphasis on cultural understandings of the places where learning occurs. Moreover, outdoor education commonly demonstrates characteristics of a McDonaldized experience as opposed to a place-based experience. This paper explores two topics that may help to explain why place is not to the fore in teaching and learning in Irish outdoor education practice: historico-cultural relationships with the land, and the impact of the rationalisation of place on …
