Inequality And Climate Change: Two Problems, One Solution?, Francesco Nicolli, Marianna Gilli, Francesco Vona
Inequality And Climate Change: Two Problems, One Solution?, Francesco Nicolli, Marianna Gilli, Francesco Vona
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
This paper re-examines the relationship between per capita income, inequality, and per capita emissions while accounting for nonhomotheticity in green preferences and nonlinearities in the impact of economic growth on GHG emissions. Theoretically, our research is motivated by the fact that if environmental quality is a need with low priority on the hierarchical scale, the effect of inequality on emissions should vary depending on the level of income per capita. Specifically, for a given level of income per capita, a richer median voter will be more likely to approve of more stringent environmental policies, and thus, lower inequality is beneficial …

Applying Retrieval Practice In Climate Change Education: How Retrieval-Based Learning May Enhance High School Students’ Conceptual Understanding On Climate Change Topics, Mengyu Wang
Dissertations
This dissertation explored ways to apply retrieval practice strategy on climate change learning at the high school level. Three studies presented that retrieval practice could be used broadly on different topics of climate change and in different learning scenarios. The first study focused on the effect of question placement on learning when students studied sea level rise from an educational video lecture. The results suggested that applying retrieval practice in a style of embedded short-answer questions in videos has clear advantage over restudying the video lecture in both immediate and delayed tests, but no difference in students' performance was found …

The Minority In The Minority, Black Women In Computer Science Fields: A Phenomenological Study, Blanche' D. Anderson
The Minority In The Minority, Black Women In Computer Science Fields: A Phenomenological Study, Blanche' D. Anderson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to describe the lived experiences of Black women with a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in computer science, currently employed in the United States. The theory guiding this study was Krumboltz’s social learning theory of career decision-making, as it provides a foundation for understanding how a combination of factors leads to an individual’s educational and occupational preferences and skills. This qualitative study answered the following central research question: What are the lived experiences of Black women with a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in computer science, currently employed in the United States? …
‘We Call It Getting Your Eye In’: Policing Sexual Harassment On The London Underground Through The Lens Of Haraway’S Situated Knowledges And Cyborgs, Sian Lewis
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
This article explores police perspectives of sexual harassment on the London Underground. Drawing on 15 semi-structured interviews with the British Transport Police this article demonstrates how the police a) use their ‘situated knowledges’ to make sense of the dynamics of the London Underground and seek out offenders within the network, often without a report of harassment; and b) engage with technologies in order to (re)construct incidents of sexual harassment so that they can be investigated. The article argues that the BTP occupy a ‘soft cyborg ontology’, and claims the implications this has on epistemologies and methods of policing as significant. …

Although decolonial thought from Latin America and the Caribbean is a multifaceted field of research and sociopolitical praxis, it is often interpreted monolithically. To refuse this tendency, we argue that it is imperative to trace decolonial theory’s intellectual genealogies and engage in transgressive decolonial hermeneutics to re-interpret texts (theories) according to their living socio-historical and geopolitical contexts. Following Stuart Hall’s lead, we first sketch out the geopolitical and sociocultural exigencies that allow for theoretical movements to unfold, paying more attention to the geopolitical implications of thinking “from” Latin America and the Caribbean. Second, we address the ethical imperative of thinking …

Imperialism In The Making Of U.S. Law, Nina Farnia
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
This Article proceeds in two parts. In Part I, “U.S. Foreign Policy as Racial Policy,” I identify the four key policy pillars of U.S. imperialism: militarism, unilateral coercive measures, foreign aid, and the deployment of the dollar. I then pivot to a brief history of U.S. imperialism in the Middle East, highlighting the geographic and racial specificities that influence the ideological and legal contours of U.S. imperialism. I end this section with an analysis of The Public Report of the Vice President’s Task Force on Combatting Terrorism (1985), which was a defining document in the making of anti-terrorism law …

A Gis Analysis To Identify Historical, Contemporary, And Spatial Housing Discrimination In Denver, Colorado, Ian Sharkey
Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones
This study analyzes the relationship between housing discrimination and equity within the City of Denver. This study creates a discrimination index by combining (1) historical Discrimination, (2) contemporary segregation, and (3) housing inequity data into an index to compare the Denver Department of Health and the Environment (DDPHE) 2020 equity index using a local bivariate analysis. This study found a negative linear relationship between the created and Denver equity indexes. The variables used for the discrimination index can explain some of the relationships, but future studies should use more variables for a discrimination index.

Effect Of Dedicated Admission Medication Reconciliation On Patient Care In 100-Bed Acute Care Hospital, Judy Mcmanus
Student Scholarly Projects
Practice Problem: Medication reconciliations are often completed inadequately or inaccurately when patients are admitted to the hospital. Findings at the study site identified an average of two pharmacy interventions necessary per admitted patient to correct home medication lists after completion of the medication reconciliation.
PICOT: The PICOT question that guided this project was “In adult patients admitted to a 100-bed acute care hospital (P), how does use of the MATCH toolkit for medication reconciliation process steps (I), compared to the current process of home medication reconciliation completed by the physician prior to nursing or pharmacy team review (C) affect accuracy …

"We'll Probably All Be In Trouble For Hugging A Kid": Rural Teacher Radicalism In Addressing Adverse Childhood Experiences, Catharine Biddle
The Rural Educator
There is a tension between the principles of global education reform, with its focus on fiscal efficiency, literacy and numeracy, and the increasing interest in meeting the needs of the whole child and addressing childhood adversity within schools. In rural communities, this tension may be heightened by fractured social service networks mediated by distance and the declining economic well-being of many communities perpetuated by decades of unfavorable social and economic policy. Drawing on focus group discussions with 110 rural Maine educators, this study examines how rural educators negotiate this tension in their day to day practice to address student needs …

Remote Sensing Evidence For Significant Variations In The Global Gross Domestic Product During The Covid-19 Epidemic, Bin Guo, Wencai Zhang, Lin Pei, Xiaowei Zhu, Pingping Luo, Weili Duan
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been spreading rapidly and is still threatening human health currently. A series of measures for restraining epidemic spreading has been adopted throughout the world, which seriously impacted the gross domestic product (GDP) globally. However, details of the changes in the GDP and its spatial heterogeneity characteristics on a fine scale worldwide during the pandemic are still uncertain. We designed a novel scheme to simulate a 0.1° × 0.1° resolution grid global GDP map during the COVID-19 pandemic. Simulated nighttime-light remotely sensed data (SNTL) was forecasted via a GM(1, 1) model under the assumption that there …

Acute cardiorespiratory breathlessness accounts for one in eight of all emergency hospitalizations. Early, noninvasive diagnostic testing is a clinical priority that allows rapid triage and treatment. Here, we sought to find and replicate diagnostic breath volatile organic compound (VOC) biomarkers of acute cardiorespiratory disease and understand breath metabolite network enrichment in acute disease, with a view to gaining mechanistic insight of breath biochemical derangements. We collected and analyzed exhaled breath samples from 277 participants presenting acute cardiorespiratory exacerbations and aged-matched healthy volunteers. Topological data analysis phenotypes differentiated acute disease from health and acute cardiorespiratory exacerbation subtypes (acute heart failure, acute …

Most Recent Rupture On The Boulder Creek Fault Triggered Bedrock Landsliding In The Nooksack Watershed, Whatcom County, Washington, Abigail Catherine Underwood
Dissertations and Theses
Catastrophic bedrock landslides with volumes ranging from 106 to 108 m3 contribute to rapid landscape evolution, often resulting in erosion rates that exceed the long-term average rates caused by tectonic uplift. Understanding the spatiotemporal trends of large bedrock landslides helps us understand previous drivers of landscape evolution as well as predict how the landscape will respond in the future. The Nooksack Watershed, Whatcom County, Washington, is particularly susceptible to large slope failures because of its high relief, seismic activity, local geology, and relatively abundant precipitation. Specifically, folded and faulted bedrock structures conducive to landsliding in addition to …

English cognitive poetics could help undergraduate students achieve a better understanding of what they do and why they are doing something. It also helps them find new ways of doing things and improving old ways that they have. Hence, this study intends to fill a gap of information about the way Iraqi college students process English poetry. This study aims at: 1. Pin-pointing the components of cognitive poetic schema (CPS) used by EFL undergraduate students for interpreting English poems. 2. Identifying students' level of performance in English CPS. 3. Finding whether there are any significant differences among students' performance in …
