Host-Microbe Interactions In Non-Native Estuarine Anemones: Biogeography And Temperature, Parker K. Lund Jan 2023

Host-Microbe Interactions In Non-Native Estuarine Anemones: Biogeography And Temperature, Parker K. Lund

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Non-native species are increasing in prevalence around the world, resulting in negative economic and ecological impacts. However, the broad distributions of non-native species also offer a system for investigating the response of host-associated microbial communities to environmental factors across a range of ecological scales. At the broadest scale, I investigated the geography of microbial communities in the non-native estuarine anemone Diadumene lineata on the west coast of the United States of America. Across latitudes, microbial community composition was very similar and displayed a high percentage of Klebsiella spp. at all sites. However, the communities in California tended to exhibit higher …

Perceptions Of Trail Safety In Humboldt County, California: An Analysis Of Safety Concerns, Factors That Impact Trail Use, And The Value People Place On Trails, Natalie C. Arroyo

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Trails in Humboldt County, California that are used for both transportation and recreation have myriad community benefits. However, people’s concerns about feeling safe can affect trail use, design, and development, as well as how trails are valued and perceived by residents. There has been a lack of information in Humboldt County about trail safety perceptions despite it being a factor that repeatedly arises in infrastructure planning and funding conversations. My research was focused on answering the following questions: (1) How do Humboldt County trail users perceive their safety on and near trails? (2) What factors affect these perceptions about safety, …

The Revolution Will Be Memed: Digital Memes As Sites For Hegemonic And Counter-Hegemonic Practices, Kimberly Sisu Jan 2023

The Revolution Will Be Memed: Digital Memes As Sites For Hegemonic And Counter-Hegemonic Practices, Kimberly Sisu

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Internet memes have become a part of everyday life as a way to participate in digital and online culture. The study of memes, known as memetics, have analyzed memes in many ways: for their political and social participation, for their multimodal presence, and their influence on online discourse. What has not yet been deeply studied are the ways memes participate in hegemonic and counter-hegemonic practices. This project aims to address this gap by investigating how hegemonic and counter-hegemonic practices show up in memes on feminism, and how those practices uphold or disrupt dominant narratives. Fifteen memes on feminism are analyzed …

Carnivore And Ungulate Occurrence In A Fire-Prone Region, Sara J. Moriarty-Graves Jan 2023

Carnivore And Ungulate Occurrence In A Fire-Prone Region, Sara J. Moriarty-Graves

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Increasing fire size and severity in the western United States causes changes to ecosystems, species’ habitat use, and interspecific interactions. Wide-ranging carnivore and ungulate mammalian species and their interactions may be influenced by an increase in fire activity in northern California. Depending on the fire characteristics, ungulates may benefit from burned habitat due to an increase in forage availability, while carnivore species may be differentially impacted, but ultimately driven by bottom-up processes from a shift in prey availability. I used a three-step approach to estimate the single-species occupancy of four large mammal species: mountain lion (Puma concolor), coyote …

Effect Of In Situ Experimental Heating Of Artificial Mytilus Californianus Beds On Associated Invertebrate Communities In Northern California, Claire C. Windecker Jan 2023

Effect Of In Situ Experimental Heating Of Artificial Mytilus Californianus Beds On Associated Invertebrate Communities In Northern California, Claire C. Windecker

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

With the continued progression of climate change, the role of foundation species as mediators of temperature stress for species living on and within them has become increasingly important. In the intertidal zone, a major foundation species is the California mussel, Mytilus californianus, which can help to limit thermal stress for species that live among aggregations of these mussels. The ability of mussels to limit thermal stress as temperatures increase, however, is still unclear. This study sought to experimentally manipulate surface temperatures of artificial mussel beds in situ to examine the effects that increased surface heating at a single site …

Monitoring Bull Kelp (Nereocystis Leutkeana) Remotely At High Resolutions, Hannah E. Joss Jan 2023

Monitoring Bull Kelp (Nereocystis Leutkeana) Remotely At High Resolutions, Hannah E. Joss

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Bull kelp (Nereocystis leutkeana) is a foundational seaweed in nearshore, marine systems, traditionally supporting economically important fisheries, extracting nutrients in its vicinity, and sequestering carbon and transporting it great distances to subsidize shallow and deep-sea environments. Bull kelp is also a culturally important species for some indigenous peoples along the northeastern Pacific coastline and provides a harvestable product with growing demand. Global trends in kelp distribution show patterns of decline, and the immense loss of northern California bull kelp forests in response to climatic changes have highlighted the need for alternative sources of kelp, both for the product …

No Dogs Allowed (Without A Warrant): Expanding The Fourth Amendment Sanctity Of The Home To Interior Threshold Searches For Tenants In Multiunit Dwellings–United States V. Mathews, Katelin O'Connor Jan 2023

No Dogs Allowed (Without A Warrant): Expanding The Fourth Amendment Sanctity Of The Home To Interior Threshold Searches For Tenants In Multiunit Dwellings–United States V. Mathews, Katelin O'Connor

Nebraska Law Review

Ambiguous privacy expectations under the Fourth Amendment have left tenants in multiunit dwellings vulnerable and lacking full constitutional protection from the government’s prying eyes. The storied history of Fourth Amendment interpretation lacks clarity regarding what comprises a permissible search and what limitations are placed on a tenant’s reasonable expectation of privacy, particularly concerning the utilization of dogs to conduct sniff searches. As a result, tenants in multiunit dwellings have traditionally received fewer constitutional protections under the Fourth Amendment compared to those who live in single-family, stand-alone homes.

This Note argues the Eighth Circuit, and further, all circuits, should utilize the …

Research & Publications

Healthcare services become increasingly technology dependent every passing day such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Fog Computing, 5th generation (5G) and beyond communications, etc. They enable the processing and exchange of huge volumes of healthcare data whose integrity and real-time delivery are critical for healthcare services. Optimal power consumption in such essential healthcare infrastructure is critical for the well-being of patients and crucial to reduce the operational cost of healthcare facilities. In this paper, a Fog node has been introduced in an IoT healthcare infrastructure with power consumption as a key deciding factor. This work proposed a mathematical formulation …

Johnson V. M’Intosh: 200 Years Of Racism That Runs With The Land, Sheila Simon Jan 2023

Johnson V. M’Intosh: 200 Years Of Racism That Runs With The Land, Sheila Simon

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

The United States Supreme Court case of Johnson v. M’Intosh is a foundation of property law in the United States. It established the United States government as the only possible buyer of land from people native to the continent. As the only possible buyer, the United States government had the power to negotiate a low purchase price. The bargain basement purchases are at the root of title for most of the property in the western half of the country. The case also forms an early and critical component of many property law textbooks. The case can be used to introduce …

Chapter 9’S Constitutional Timebomb Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Uniformity Requirement, Connor Fitch Jan 2023

Chapter 9’S Constitutional Timebomb Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Uniformity Requirement, Connor Fitch

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

What happens when unresolvable public debt meets an unmovable political stalemate? Without Congressional action, some U.S. municipalities may find out. Currently, a financially insolvent municipality has only one option for bankruptcy protections: Chapter 9. Under federal law, this singular option is only available if the distressed municipality is “expressly” authorized to file a Chapter 9 bankruptcy petition by their respective state. This requirement is not purely the product of Congressional policymaking, but rather the result of the Supreme Court’s interpretation of the U.S. Constitution’s federalism restrictions. The many states have offered their authorizations in a myriad of ways, with differing …

Quantifying The Effects Of Beaver Dams And Stream Restoration On Headwater Salmonid Populations, Andrew Biche Lahr Jan 2023

Quantifying The Effects Of Beaver Dams And Stream Restoration On Headwater Salmonid Populations, Andrew Biche Lahr

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The importance of freshwater habitats in supporting ecological communities and human civilization is irrefutable, yet they remain amongst the most imperiled systems in the world due to factors like resource extraction, non-native species, and climate change. In the Western United States, efforts to combat stream degradation and drought have sought to increase water storage, aggrade eroded stream beds, and increase base flows by promoting dam building by beavers and through restoration projects using human-made beaver dam analogs (BDAs). Even though beaver-related restoration projects are becoming increasingly popular, documentation of the effects of beaver dams and beaver-related restoration on headwater stream …

Due Process Deportations, Angelica Chazaro Jan 2023

Due Process Deportations, Angelica Chazaro

Should pro-immigrant advocates pursue federally funded counsel for all immigrants facing deportation? For most pro-immigrant advocates and scholars, the answer is self-evident: More lawyers for immigrants would mean more justice for immigrants, and thus, the federal government should fund such lawyers. Moreover, the argument goes, federally funded counsel for immigrants would improve due process and fairness, as well as make immigration enforcement more efficient. This Article argues the opposite: Federally funded counsel is the wrong goal. The majority of expulsions of immigrants now happen outside immigration courts— and thus are impervious to immigration lawyering. Even for those who make it …

Toxic Timescapes: Examining Toxicity Across Time And Space, Simone M. Müller, May-Brith Ohman Nielsen Jan 2023

Toxic Timescapes: Examining Toxicity Across Time And Space, Simone M. Müller, May-Brith Ohman Nielsen

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

An interdisciplinary environmental humanities volume that explores human-environment relationships on our permanently polluted planet.

While toxicity and pollution are ever present in modern daily life, politicians, juridical systems, media outlets, scholars, and the public alike show great difficulty in detecting, defining, monitoring, or generally coming to terms with them. This volume’s contributors argue that the source of this difficulty lies in the struggle to make sense of the intersecting temporal and spatial scales working on the human and more-than-human body, while continuing to acknowledge race, class, and gender in terms of global environmental justice and social inequality.

The term toxic …

Black Businesses Matter: A Longitudinal Study Of Black-Owned Restaurants In The Covid-19 Pandemic Using Geospatial Big Data, Xiao Huang, Xiaoqi Bao, Zhenlong Li, Shaozeng Zhang, Bo Zhao

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Black communities in the United States have been disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic; however, few empirical studies have been conducted to examine the conditions of Black-owned businesses in the United States during this challenging time. In this article, we assess the circumstances of Black-owned restaurants during the entire year of 2020 through a longitudinal quantitative analysis of restaurant patronage. Using multiple sources of geospatial big data, the analysis reveals that most Black-owned restaurants in this study are disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic among different cities in the United States over time. The finding reveals the need for a …

Idle Hands Are The Devil's Workshop? Exploring The Connections Between Prison-Work Release Programming, Post-Release Employment And Recidivism, Ryan Maranville

Student Research – Stevenson Center

This paper focuses on evaluations of employment-based reentry programs. It begins with an overview of recidivism, touching on the both theory and empirical research framing employment as a pivotal factor in the reentry process. Next, it reviews the limited assessments of work-release programming and their findings. The final sections examine the structural factors which complicate reentry, specifically low wages and community disorganization. And identifies the benefits of incorporating qualitative methods in criminological research as it relates to evaluating programs, their impact, and tying findings to program adaptations and future implementation.

BACKGROUND: Real-world performance of COVID-19 diagnostic tests under Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) must be assessed. We describe overall trends in the performance of serology tests in the context of real-world implementation.

METHODS: Six health systems estimated the odds of seropositivity and positive percent agreement (PPA) of serology test among people with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection by molecular test. In each dataset, we present the odds ratio and PPA, overall and by key clinical, demographic, and practice parameters.

RESULTS: A total of 15,615 people were observed to have at least one serology test 14-90 days after a positive molecular test for SARS-CoV-2. …

Reproductive Coercion Victimization And Associated Mental Health Outcomes Among Female-Identifying Young Adults, Emily A Muñoz, Ryan C Shorey, Jeff R Temple

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Reproductive coercion is a serious public health problem. Victimization has been associated with poor mental health outcomes, including symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression in clinical and college samples. We build on these findings by examining the association between reproductive coercion victimization and mental and behavioral health outcomes, including depression, PTSD symptoms, anxiety, and drinking behaviors in a diverse community-derived sample of female-identifying young adults (mean age = 20; SD=.72). Participants (n = 368) were originally recruited as part of a study on dating violence in seven Texas public high schools. Participants completed an online study that …

Articles

This paper investigates the role of teacher agency for those who were trained in using an innovative Geographic Information Systems (GIS) approach and incorporated GIS into their teaching. While national curricula increasingly emphasise STEM and sustainability approaches, there has been limited analysis of how teachers can bring new software, including GIS, and new approaches into the classroom. Through an evaluation of a teaching initiative “5*S: Space, Surveyors and Students – STEM and the Sustainable Development Goals” designed to bring GIS technology, satellite data, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into classrooms as activities and resources for teachers and students in …
