Predation by crustaceans and echinoderms is a significant driver of mortality for sessile invertebrates in near-shore marine ecosystems. As a response, shellfish growers use predator exclusion cages to grow their product. Oysters grown in these cages and clams in and under nets have been observed to exhibit thinner, brittle shells, which is not optimal for market, nor for those being grown for restoration purposes. Here, the nonconsumptive predator effects of several native and nonnative predators on shell morphology of Crassostrea virginica oyster spat. Juvenile (1–3 mm) seed oysters were exposed separately to chemical cues of five different predators and one …

Elementary School Teachers’ Attitudes And Criteria For Special Education Services, Geraldine Maurice
Theses and Dissertations
This exploratory study examines the correlations between teachers’ attitudes and the disproportionate representation of African American males in special educational services in the United States education system. Using a sample of teachers from two elementary schools with special education student representation proportional to the student body population, the purpose of this study is to examine the attitudes of teachers with regard to student placement in special education programs. Specifically, this study will focus on African American male student placements in special education and their achievement on the Grade 3 English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency test. This study employed a purposive …
Exploring Teachers’ And Administrators’ Perceptions Of Steam Education In K-12 Schools And Its Implications On The Development Of Steam: An Explanatory Sequential Mixed Method Design, Royce J. Lopez
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this explanatory sequential mixed method design was to investigate, identify and document the similarities and differences in perceptions when implementing a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education between teachers and administrators at the K-12 level. Throughout this process, teachers’ and administrators’ beliefs and perceptions towards STEAM instruction were analyzed to determine how they perceived, interpreted, implemented and sustained this new initiative. The problem, however, is that studies have demonstrated that educators have a limited understanding of STEAM content knowledge (CK), pedagogical content knowledge (PCK), as well as low self-efficacy in teaching STEAM concepts, which results …
Determining Correlations Between Global History Teacher’S Metacognitive Awareness And Teaching Demographics, Philip D. Farrelly
Determining Correlations Between Global History Teacher’S Metacognitive Awareness And Teaching Demographics, Philip D. Farrelly
Theses and Dissertations
Partnership for 21st Century Skills has continuously identified critical and metacognitive thinking skills to be essential for life and career in post-secondary education and workforce settings. As a response to the Race to the Top (2010) initiative and Common Core State Standards (2009), New York State Board of Regents began an overhaul for all the curriculum standards and anchored assessments. These changes require comprehensive preparation for teachers to effectively transfer thinking practices and skills to their students. Educators and constituents have been consistently apprehensive of its implementation due to the needed preparedness and implications of high-stakes evaluative measures. The purpose …

An Analysis Of If The Advanced Placement: World History Modern Reading Is Effective Teacher Professional Development, Christina A. Cone
Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-
This study explored if the AP World History: Modern Reading is effective teacher professional development and if it impacts teachers and students. Desimone’s Core Conceptual Framework served as the foundation for which to evaluate professional development. Adult learning theory served as the theoretical framework. The researcher used a mixed methods explanatory sequential design. A survey was completed by 83 AP World History: Modern high school teachers who had attended the AP World History: Modern on-site Reading. The survey provided data on teacher perceptions of the Reading as well as the perceived impacts on student learning. The researcher then conducted a …

G.K. Chesterton’s short and surreal parable, “The Angry Street: A Bad Dream,” reminds us to not overlook things that surround us in everyday life, and to show them respect. Wayne Thiebaud’s paintings of cityscapes, inspired by San Francisco’s steep, building-lined streets, reestablish our links to the built environment with a vitality that sometimes the real—and the camera—lacks, but which drawing and painting bring to that which is represented. Chesterton and Thiebaud underscore how fictions are more evocative than truths. In this essay, accompanied by my own drawings of San Francisco’s steep streets, I suggest that fantastical fiction and art, in …

Panta Rhei Benchmark Dataset: Socio-Hydrological Data Of Paired Events Of Floods And Droughts, Heidi Kreibich, Elliot Wickham, Et Al.
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
As the adverse impacts of hydrological extremes increase in many regions of the world, a better understanding of the drivers of changes in risk and impacts is essential for effective flood and drought risk management and climate adaptation. However, there is currently a lack of comprehensive, empirical data about the processes, interactions, and feedbacks in complex human–water systems leading to flood and drought impacts. Here we present a benchmark dataset containing socio-hydrological data of paired events, i.e. two floods or two droughts that occurred in the same area. The 45 paired events occurred in 42 different study areas and cover …

Connecting Distinct Realms Along Multiple Dimensions: A Meta-Ecosystem Resilience Perspective, David G. Angeler, Jani Heino, Juan Rubio-Ríos, J. Jesús Casas
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Resilience research is central to confront the sustainability challenges to ecosystems and human societies in a rapidly changing world. Given that social-ecological problems span the entire Earth system, there is a critical need for resilience models that account for the connectivity across intricately linked ecosystems (i.e., freshwater, marine, terrestrial, atmosphere). We present a resilience perspective of meta-ecosystems that are connected through the flow of biota, matter and energy within and across aquatic and terrestrial realms, and the atmosphere. We demonstrate ecological resilience sensu Holling using aquatic-terrestrial linkages and riparian ecosystems more generally. A discussion of applications in riparian ecology and …

New High Resolution Aeromagnetic Anomaly Map Of Türkiye And Its Various Derivative-Based Maps, Alper Kiyak, Eren Pamuk, Serkan Köksal, Mustafa Levent Bakar, Serdar Tosuner
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Since Türkiye's territory is mostly mountainous and forested, earth science studies in these areas have not been completed at an adequate level and with a satisfying resolution. However, due to the long time and cost of collecting measurements from land in large- and medium-scale studies and due to the inability to collect measurements in regular grid intervals in large-scale studies to be carried out on land, an airborne geophysical survey project was conducted in order to collect high-resolution magnetic and radiometric country-scale data. Total magnetic field and radiometry data were collected from the air between 2017 and 2022 within the …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The active tectonics of Anatolia is mostly characterized by its westward motion with respect to Eurasia between the Hellenic subduction in the west and Arabia-Eurasia continental collision in the east. Although most of the deformation is suggested to be confined along Anatolia?s boundary elements, viz. the North and East Anatolian shear zones, recent studies indicate a higher magnitude of internal strain accumulation, especially along the parallel/subparallel strike-slip faults of its central province. We present the first morphochronology-based slip rate estimate for one of these strike-slip structures, the Ovacık Fault, by using cosmogenic 36Cl dating of offset fluvial deposits. At the …

Evaluating Behavioral Intention To Increase Classroom Geotechnology Usage Following Geoinquiry Implementation, Erika S. Klose
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
As educational practices include foundational and cutting-edge preparation, the value of problem-based instruction employing industry-standard technologies increases. Geospatial technologies (GST), are a group of professional technologies, including GIS (Geographic Information Systems), used by industries to make informed decisions with spatial data. This study investigated educator behavioral intention to use GIS/GST in classroom practice, and the moderating effect, if any, of the GeoInquiry, a curricular resource. The UTAUT framework was employed to evaluate and quantify the factors impacting behavioral intention (performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions). These data were examined to identify moderation by GeoInquiry usage. One hundred …

This article delineates a hitherto eclipsed labor history of the Northwest Borneo oilfields. In 2018, Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) in an unprecedented move, released to Brunei’s national archive two labor registers of the British Malayan Petroleum Company (BMPC-renamed BSP in 1958), with entries dating between the 1940s and 1950s. These registers provided a rare glimpse of the workers who were recruited to the Brunei oilfields as labor, a category distinct from staff. As BMPC labor they worked to rehabilitate the company town and the oilfields that were destroyed during the Second World War by the Japanese army and allied bombing …

Up In Smoke: Wildfires And Economic Growth, Nicholas Silvis
Gettysburg Economic Review
Do wildfires have a causal effect on economic development? Using satellite data, I analyze every country's exposure to wildfire exposure from 1982-2018. I use synthetic controls to model the impact of wildfire exposure on GDP per capita having controlled for population density, trade, agriculture, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), and polity score. I find that the impacts of wildfires are fairly localized, impacting parts of Africa that both experience high numbers of wildfires and are developing.
Impact Of Charging Infrastructure On Electric Vehicle Sales: An Analysis From Counties In 13 Us States, Shubh N. Parekh
Impact Of Charging Infrastructure On Electric Vehicle Sales: An Analysis From Counties In 13 Us States, Shubh N. Parekh
Gettysburg Economic Review
Adoption of battery electric vehicles (BEVs), and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), has become a priority for the government because of the constant threat of climate change. Over the years, government monetary incentives like tax credits, tax rebates, and other monetary subsidies are the leading way to increase electric vehicle sales in the United States. While these incentives are necessary to combat the high costs of electric vehicles (EVs), there hasn’t been too much attention given to combat range anxiety. Since EVs are run on lithium-ion batteries, there is a limited range for different EVs, with the maximum being around …
Sociological Explanations Of Coronavirus Incidence Rates In Kentucky Counties, Sarah Cooper, James N. Maples
Sociological Explanations Of Coronavirus Incidence Rates In Kentucky Counties, Sarah Cooper, James N. Maples
Kentucky Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship
This study explores sociological explanations for Covid-19 incidence rates among Kentucky Counties. The authors examine how incidence rates varied pre/post-Omicron variant based on a county’s educational attainment, poverty rates, political perspective, health status, and place status (Appalachian status, metropolitan status). The authors discovered that none of these variables effectively explained differences in county level Covid-19 rates before Omicron. However, once Omicron became the prevalent variant in Kentucky, metropolitan status, Appalachian status, two measures of poverty rates, political perspective, and three measure of educational attainment all predicted differences in mean Covid-19 incidence rates.

The Persuasive Nature Of Mythology And Folklore Through Human Behavior, Entertainment, And Popular Culture, Jaylan Valentine
The Persuasive Nature Of Mythology And Folklore Through Human Behavior, Entertainment, And Popular Culture, Jaylan Valentine
Integrated Studies
The purpose of the collected research explained throughout this paper is to provide information on how humanity has been shaped through history. Through the recognition of mythology and folklore as the most influential aspects in the overall evolution of mankind. The creation and use of mythology and folklore are directly intertwined with the history that humanity teaches itself through years of schooling, recorded research, and oral communication. The sharing of mythology and folklore has changed throughout history as humanity continued to grow, starting from oral storytelling and arriving at present-day cinematic displays. Some of these cinematic representations are commonly known …

Women’s Leadership
This thesis answers Stella Nyanzi’s (2015) call for an urgent need for a purely African-curated queer rebuttal on the un-Africanness of homosexuality in the motherland in her paper “Knowledge is requisite power.” As an African lesbian agender, in this thesis, I not only add to the historico-political fact that homophobia is a remnant of colonial rule. I also tease apart the forces that sustain this repression–structural-heteropatriarchy, Middle Eastern religions, and coloniality: to elucidate how un-African and historico-philosophically incorrect it is for African leaders to weaponize the myth that homosexuality is un-African in their anti-SOGIESC rights standpoints. I borrow mainly from …

Medical advancesmean a growing array of interventions, therapies, and technologies are available to support care for children with chronic and serious conditions. Some of these approaches are supported by robust data drawn from populations that perfectly reflect an individual patient's physiologic, psychologic, and social situation. But much more often, clinicians and families face decisions in the context of some—or much—uncertainty about whether the intervention will do a child more harm than good. This is particularly true for seriously ill children with a limited lifespan— whether the child is a neonate born with a life-threatening brain anomaly or an adolescent with …

Early Case Management Involvement For Long-Term Care Planning In The Primary Care Setting To Reduce Avoidable Social Admissions In High-Risk Patients, Elizabeth Blondeau
M. S. in Nursing Health Care Leadership
There are no protocols for case management referrals of patients at risk for social hospital admissions by their outpatient providers. Social admissions lead to adverse outcomes such as delirium, infections, polypharmacy, falls, functional dependence, pose a resource and financial strain on organizations, and are antithetical to patient-centered care. Timely case management intervention may prevent these hospitalizations by establishing a plan for future care needs. Project activities included the analysis of retrospective admission data from a N.H. community hospital, collaboration with interdisciplinary colleagues among and between both inpatient and outpatient settings, and an evaluation of best practices from the literature, resulting …
