Teaching Accurate And Age-Appropriate History To Elementary Students: Teaching Third Graders About Historic Thanksgiving, Ashley Schepis Apr 2023

Teaching Accurate And Age-Appropriate History To Elementary Students: Teaching Third Graders About Historic Thanksgiving, Ashley Schepis

Honors Program Theses and Projects

This educational and historical research is based on teaching accurate and age-appropriate history to elementary students. Unfortunately, instead of true history elementary schoolers are often taught myths, to avoid teaching children about the embarrassing and gruesome parts of United States history. When history is not taught truthfully, it can perpetuate stereotypes and leave students confused when they reach secondary and higher education and discover that some of what they know is incorrect. The purpose of this project is to investigate what really happened at the 1621 Harvest Feast and its evolution into the holiday that is celebrated today, assess how …

Implementation Of A Rounding Tool To Promote Compliance With Central Line Dressing Changes In An Adult Intensive Care Unit, Fabiola Demuth Apr 2023

Implementation Of A Rounding Tool To Promote Compliance With Central Line Dressing Changes In An Adult Intensive Care Unit, Fabiola Demuth

DNP Projects

Abstract

Evidence supports implementing central line (CL) maintenance bundles and nurse-led rounding interventions to prevent central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs). In a Tennessee intensive care unit (ICU), increased CLABSI rates were associated with inconsistent CL dressing maintenance and documentation. This Doctor of Nursing Practice scholarly project was implemented to improve ICU CLABSI rates and reinforce nursing standard practices for CL dressing care. This quality improvement project used the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) model for improvement, which used the plan, do, study, act (PDSA) cycles as part of the framework to implement a daily nurse-led rounding tool in the ICU, …

Keeping On[Line] Farming: Examining Young Farmers’ Digital Curation Of Identities, (Dis)Connection And Strategies For Self-Care Through Social Media, Mark Holton, Mark Riley, Gina Kallis Apr 2023

Keeping On[Line] Farming: Examining Young Farmers’ Digital Curation Of Identities, (Dis)Connection And Strategies For Self-Care Through Social Media, Mark Holton, Mark Riley, Gina Kallis

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

This paper explores the geographies of digital curation and self-care among young farmers in the UK, examining how virtual and digital spaces are having a significant impact on how young farmers negotiate their identities, (dis)connection and self-care within their everyday lives. Drawing on interviews with 28 young famers in the UK, we observe how farming identities are (re)produced and practiced online, via carefully curated social media, and how these might constitute practices of self-care in overcoming issues such as disconnection and rural isolation. Our analysis reveals how social media posts are more than simple connections, they are curations of the …

The Cut To The Heart Of The Matter: Justice, Morality, And Virtue Ethics In Intimate Relationships, Quinn Heiser Apr 2023

The Cut To The Heart Of The Matter: Justice, Morality, And Virtue Ethics In Intimate Relationships, Quinn Heiser

Honors Theses

Since the Enlightenment project to reconstruct morality using purely rational grounds failed, modern moral debate has been fragmented. Furthermore, intimate relationships, whether romantic or marital, are plagued with all kinds of injustices that have not been formally addressed in a philosophical investigation. The purpose of this thesis is to argue that the moral theory to restore interpersonal justice in intimate relationships is the notion of ‘practice’, founded by Alasdair MacIntyre under the Aristotelian virtue ethics tradition. What is meant by the notion of practice is any human activity with goods exclusive to its extent, as well as cooperative, objective, and …

Constructing A Good Life – Aesthetic Practices In Tiny Living, Anu Besson Apr 2023

Constructing A Good Life – Aesthetic Practices In Tiny Living, Anu Besson

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

I explore how aesthetic practices, or habitual, leisurely ways of doing everyday things for aesthetic enjoyment, play an important role in a pursuit of a good life. I apply a lens of aesthetic practices on media samples portraying living in a tiny house to explore 1) how this lifestyle is presented in traditional and social media, and 2) how the tiny house movement appears to be fueled by a yearning to construct a life that supports one’s creativity and integrity of identity. This construction often takes place through or by emphasizing aesthetic practices.

Social Spending, Poverty, And Immigration: A Systematic Analysis Of Welfare State Effectiveness And Nativity In 24 Upper- And Middle-Income Democracies, Amie Bostic, Allen Hyde Apr 2023

Social Spending, Poverty, And Immigration: A Systematic Analysis Of Welfare State Effectiveness And Nativity In 24 Upper- And Middle-Income Democracies, Amie Bostic, Allen Hyde

Sociology Faculty Publications

Previous research has highlighted the disadvantaged position immigrants often face in the economy, particularly when it comes to labor market outcomes such as employment or earnings. Extending this literature, the present study evaluates the economic exclusion of immigrants, conceptualized not as labor market outcomes but as relative poverty. This study examines the relationship between welfare generosity and immigrant poverty across rich western democracies and compares this relationship with that of native poverty. One publicly held belief is that immigrants disproportionately benefit from welfare generosity, while the literature on welfare chauvinism suggests greater social spending may not necessarily benefit immigrants. Furthermore, …

The Sound Of The Civil War: Examining The Intersection Between Music And Emotion In America, 1861-1865, Christina Cannon Apr 2023

The Sound Of The Civil War: Examining The Intersection Between Music And Emotion In America, 1861-1865, Christina Cannon

Campus Research Month

The topics of the history of music and the history of music intersect in the Civil War in fascinating ways. Both religious music and “secular” music were seen to have great power over their listeners, potentially with the power to alter the directions of lives or their salvation status. Music was used both as a mode of rebellion against the antagonizing army and ideal and a rebellion against unnecessarily violent acts. Each side used it against the other, but a select few also used it against the war itself. Soldiers marched to music, set camp to music, and fought to …

Shaping Sustainability In Classroom Curricula In Singapore: Educators And Students As Collaborative Change Agents, Anna Fromson-Ho

International Studies Honors Projects

Climate change is a global crisis, and in Singapore, a low-lying city-state, its geography makes it susceptible to extreme weather events and zoonotic diseases. Singapore's alignment with global commitments like the United Nations Agenda for Sustainable Development is elevated by its presence as a leader in urban sustainability. Using a mixed-methods approach, this paper explores sustainability as a classroom concept and educators' role in translating curriculum standards into learning that informs, educates, and empowers students to become agents of change. Sharing these perspectives will help develop collaborative learning programs that center educators and students, improving understanding of this important field.

Marijuana Use During Pregnancy: Outcomes For The Pregnant Person, The Fetus, And Provider Recommendations, Anna E. Sump

Honors Thesis

Background

Marijuana is the most commonly used federally illicit substance in the United States, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2022) reporting it was used by an estimated 48.2 million people in 2019. The legalization of marijuana for medical and recreational use, as well as its decriminalization over the past 20 years, has created a new challenge for healthcare providers and researchers. As of December 2022, 18 states and the District of Columbia have legalized recreational use, while the remaining 32 do not offer legalized recreational use (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2022). Regardless of …

The disparities in alcohol-attributed death rates among different racial and ethnic groups in the United States (US) have received limited research attention. Our study aimed to examine the burden and trends in alcohol-attributed mortality rates in the US by race and ethnicity from 1999 to 2020. We used national mortality data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (CDC WONDER) database and employed the ICD-10 coding system to identify alcohol-related deaths. Disparity rate ratios were calculated using the Taylor series, and Joinpoint regression was used to analyze temporal trends and calculate annual and …

Wildfire And Degradation Accelerate Northern Peatland Carbon Release, S. L. Wilkinson, R. Andersen, P. A. Moore, S. J. Davidson, G. Granath, J. M. Waddington Apr 2023

Wildfire And Degradation Accelerate Northern Peatland Carbon Release, S. L. Wilkinson, R. Andersen, P. A. Moore, S. J. Davidson, G. Granath, J. M. Waddington

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The northern peatland carbon sink plays a vital role in climate regulation; however, the future of the carbon sink is uncertain, in part, due to the changing interactions of peatlands and wildfire. Here, we use empirical datasets from natural, degraded and restored peatlands in non-permafrost boreal and temperate regions to model net ecosystem exchange and methane fluxes, integrating peatland degradation status, wildfire combustion and post-fire dynamics. We find that wildfire processes reduced carbon uptake in pristine peatlands by 35% and further enhanced emissions from degraded peatlands by 10%. The current small net sink is vulnerable to the interactions of peatland …

The timing and mechanisms of past hydroclimate change in northeast Mexico are poorly constrained, limiting our ability to evaluate climate model performance. To address this, we present a multiproxy speleothem record of past hydroclimate variability spanning 62.5 to 5.1 ka from Tamaulipas, Mexico. Here we show a strong influence of Atlantic and Pacific sea surface temperatures on orbital and millennial scale precipitation changes in the region. Multiple proxies show no clear response to insolation forcing, but strong evidence for dry conditions during Heinrich Stadials. While these trends are consistent with other records from across Mesoamerica and the Caribbean, the relative …

A Cross-National Investigation Of Human Trafficking Exploitation, Aniyah D. Richardson Apr 2023

A Cross-National Investigation Of Human Trafficking Exploitation, Aniyah D. Richardson

Honors College Theses

Human trafficking is a prevalent business, generating up to an estimated annual profit of $150 billion dollars globally (International Labour Organization [ILO], 2014). Although human trafficking is a global phenomenon, an element that has not received considerable empirical attention has been nuances between trafficking that occurs within a singular country (i.e., domestic trafficking) and that which occurs between multiple countries (i.e., international trafficking). The current study utilized cross-national data from the Counter Trafficking Data Collaborative’s (CTDC) Global Synthetic Dataset (GSD) to compare demographic profiles of victims trafficked domestically and internationally. Incorporating measures of gender, age, country of citizenship, country of …
