Hydroclimate Effects On Great Salt Lake Decline Since 1980, Siiri Joy Bigalke
Hydroclimate Effects On Great Salt Lake Decline Since 1980, Siiri Joy Bigalke
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
As a terminal basin lake, the Great Salt Lake (GSL) is known to act as a barometer for low frequency climate variability for the Western United States. As thus, there are naturally occurring large changes to GSL elevation levels that vary on time scales from years to decades. However, amongst these naturally occurring interannual changes there has been a significant declining trend in the elevation levels since a string of anomalous pluvial years in the early 1980s. In the summer of 2022, the Great Salt Lake reached its lowest levels in recorded history, which coincided with a two-decades long regional …

‘Where Now Bucephalus And The Proud Eormanric?' The Interplay Of Gothic And Classical References As A Tacit Background Behind The Wanderer, Tolkien's Anglo-Saxon Source, Giovanni Carmine Costabile
Journal of Tolkien Research
The famous lines "Where now the horse and the rider?" from The Two Towers, spoken by Théoden in Peter Jackson's film, but recited by Aragorn in Tolkien's original text, find an unquestionable source in the Anglo-Saxon poem The Wanderer, and as such received detailed comment by the Professor as a scholar, stating that it is not very important to identify who the rider being cited might be, as long as we admit he is a "type". In order to understand the type of this rider, then, we only have to look for similar occurrences of the evergreen "ubi …

Meeting, Moving, Mastering - A Text Analysis Of The Aesthetic Attractions Of 'Wild Swimming', Dagmar Dahl, Åsa I. Bäckström
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Why are people fascinated by swimming in nature? This article addresses the aesthetic experiences of wild swimming as expressed by five wild swimming authors in their books. Drawing from aesthetic philosophy, we analyze the ways in which the appeal of wild swimming is described on three levels: the allure of water in the environment, the sensory encounter between water and the body, and the experience of moving in water. Furthermore, with reference to Seel’s concept of nature aesthetics (1996), the experience of wild swimming is analyzed in terms of contemplation, correspondence, and imagination. We can conclude that the special intensity …

This study examines the use of leaf area index (LAI) to inform variable-rate irrigation (VRI) for irrigated alfalfa (Medicago sativa). LAI is useful for predicting zone-specific evapotranspiration (ETc). One approach toward estimating LAI is to utilize the relationship between LAI and visible vegetation indices (VVIs) using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery. This research has three objectives: (1) to measure and describe the within-field variation in LAI and canopy height for an irrigated alfalfa field, (2) to evaluate the relationships between the alfalfa LAI and various VVIs with and without field average canopy height, and (3) to …

School of Computing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Structured knowledge is important for many AI applications. Commonsense knowledge, which is crucial for robust human-centric AI, is covered by a small number of structured knowledge projects. However, they lack knowledge about human traits and behaviors conditioned on socio-cultural contexts, which is crucial for situative AI. This paper presents Candle, an end-to-end methodology for extracting high-quality cultural commonsense knowledge (CCSK) at scale. Candle extracts CCSK assertions from a huge web corpus and organizes them into coherent clusters, for 3 domains of subjects (geography, religion, occupation) and several cultural facets (food, drinks, clothing, traditions, rituals, behaviors). Candle includes judicious techniques for …

Anime Popularity In The Market Place: Why Choose Anime Over Cartoons, Nicholas Morrow
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
This thesis explores the growing popularity of anime in the global entertainment marketplace and examines why consumers increasingly choose anime over traditional Western cartoons and television programming. Through a review of historical, cultural, and scholarly literature, as well as an analysis of fan opinions gathered from online sources, the study investigates the factors that make anime an appealing form of entertainment. Findings indicate that anime’s popularity is driven primarily by its distinctive visual artistry, compelling storytelling, and well-developed characters. The research argues that anime benefits from Japan’s high-context cultural approach to communication, which emphasizes symbolism, atmosphere, visual detail, and nuanced …

This article focuses on the volcanic eruptions in Priangan, West Java, in the first half of the nineteenth century. Even though volcanic eruptions are natural occurrences, their impacts on human lives are viewed as historical events. While such disasters caused damage and misfortune to those directly affected, some people may also use them as a source of inspiration to seek knowledge. Moreover, eruptions occurring in an area were, to a certain extent, considered as a threat to the colonial authorities. Using contemporary news, official reports, and diaries, this research analyzes the relationship between natural events and its surrounding social and …
