Circular Food Education: Developing A Food Education Programme Based On Sustainability, Experiential Learning And Pleasure In Irish Primary Schools, Michelle Darmody Dr

Doctoral

This research explored how an expanded and sustained education about food within the primary school curriculum in the Republic of Ireland could be achieved. A constructivist ontology underpinned the project, with multiple theoretical frameworks related to constructivist learning and building agency, informing the study. A multi-method action research methodology was used, providing practical solutions through action, reflection, practice and theory. A narrative review of the literature and existing policy preceded three sections of fieldwork. A scoping consultation with key stakeholders was followed by the development and piloting of a food education programme entitled the Global Citizenship Food and Biodiversity Theme …

An Inchoate Process For The International Regulation Of Military Activities In Space, Baker Spring Nov 2023

An Inchoate Process For The International Regulation Of Military Activities In Space, Baker Spring

Space and Defense

As the breadth and depth of military activities in space expand, demands are growing to regulate these activities at the international level. In some cases, these demands stem from the recognition that broader national security operations in space are moving away from a legacy of being dominated by secret intelligence activities and in the direction of more open military activities.1 In other cases, they are driven by the efforts of arms control advocates to roll back the “weaponization of space.”2 Regardless of the underlying motivations, the demands for international regulation are going to grow, and the debate will turn increasingly …

A Load Too Heavy: Kayayei Practice And Ghana's Child's Rights Obligation Under Domestic And International Law, Olusola Adegbite

Ohio Northern University International Law Journal

As the first country to ratify the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) 1989, Ghana boasts a robust child rights protection framework. With a blend of laws and institutions, it has continued to demonstrate what its image of child protection is, and how it hopes to bring this to fruition. Much of this has however remained unrealized due to implementation challenges. Mirroring this crisis is the Kayayei practice, an informal sector trade in which women engage in head portering, with a significant population being young and underage girls. The serious implications that the practice has for the future …

Poetic Tracks And Treading On Indigenous Lands: Examining Marlatt And Warland’S And Akiwenzie-Damm’S Literary Travels To Australia And Aotearoa, Christine C. Campana

The Goose

This paper considers the work of poets who travel from the area of the Indigenous land of Turtle Island now known as Canada to the Indigenous territories of Australia and Aotearoa. The poets engage in different forms of movement on the land that reveal varying degrees of awareness of and respect for Indigenous sovereignty. In particular, I put “17:00 / coming into Port Pirie” and “30/5 8:50 / past Menindee” from Daphne Marlatt and Betsy Warland’s 1988 Double Negative, an understudied collection of poetry in which the lesbian poets traverse Australia by train while reflecting on travelling through “(ab) …

Learning Lichen, Laura Temple Nov 2023

Learning Lichen, Laura Temple

The Goose

This creative nonfiction piece follows an environmental educator’s journey of walking with children through the boreal fog forest of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Avalon Peninsula in the weeks after a hurricane. Noticing the bits of lichen that have fallen off trees and are now coating the forest floor and trails, she reflects on learning, climate disruption, how we relate to each other, and what lichen has to teach us.

Before Showtime, Amy Kaler Nov 2023

Before Showtime, Amy Kaler

The Goose

In this piece of creative nonfiction, I reflect on the experience of having time on my hands in peri-urban spaces that are characterized by transience, liminality, and contingency, while waiting for performance time at youth cheerleading competitions. I describe walking around these places, specifically Las Vegas and Abbotsford (BC). I connect my experience to other accounts of aimless wandering, such as the "derive" of psychogeography, and note the ways in which the exercises of power and potential world-ending catastrophe are present, but latent, in these landscapes. In particular, I consider the historic cold-war threat of a nuclear bomb as well …

The Middle Of The Middle: Purgatory, Pilgrimage, And Human And Plant Mobility In A Time Of Climate Crisis, Stephen S. Collis

The Goose

This paper, adapted from a talk given for the Institute of the Humanities at Simon Fraser University on April 26 2023, explores intersecting issues taken up by an in-progress long poem I am currently writing. That long poem, “The Middle,” explores questions of climate displacement, migration, and refuge via a writing-though of Dante’s Purgatorio—itself a poem of pilgrimage. A further context for both the poem and the paper about the poem is an ongoing project of walking in solidarity with refugees, asylum seekers, and immigration detainees that the author has been involved with since 2015. In seeking to “override …

Moving On Fluvial Land: Human Migration And Liquid Identities In Shiv K. Kumar’S A River With Three Banks, Muhammad Ali, Saira Fatima Dogar

The Goose

This article argues that any territory’s geological knowledge is essential to the understanding of how and why its inhabitants move on it the way they do. Taking Shiv K Kumar’s novel A River with Three Banks as its primary text, the article focuses on the protagonist, Gautam, whose frequent migrations within his country seem to emerge from his childhood attachment with the rivers of his land, the Indian Subcontinent, the fluvial quality of which is not an unknown phenomenon to geographers around the world. Gautam’s profound knowledge of what flows under his land is thus what shapes his personality, one …

Strolling And Scrolling: On Mycologies And Queer Environmental Futures, Sabine Lebel Nov 2023

Strolling And Scrolling: On Mycologies And Queer Environmental Futures, Sabine Lebel

The Goose

This essay uses queer mycologies to advocate for radical rest in the face of anti-queer organizing and hate. The author explains how a burnout diagnosis forced her out of the office and into the woods with her dog. Learning to walk the dog on a leash precipitated a deep queer kinship with the dog, mushrooms, and slide molds in the Acadian forest.

One Day I Will Destroy This Place, Shyam Patel Nov 2023

One Day I Will Destroy This Place, Shyam Patel

The Goose

My personal narrative reveals the complex and often ineffable journey that I experience from academia to home and from home to academia. I speak to the different modes of walking that such a journey necessitates: walking back home, into a sea of whiteness, and out of academia. As I make my way from Toronto to Montréal, from my residence in academia to where I call home, I carry with me the cruel optimism of education, weighing down the steps that I take, I attempt to grapple with spatial negotiations. It often feels like an arduous and never-ending passage. Still, my …

Towards The Global Plastic Treaty: A Clue To The Complexity Of Plastics In Practice, Montserrat Filella, Andrew Turner Nov 2023

Towards The Global Plastic Treaty: A Clue To The Complexity Of Plastics In Practice, Montserrat Filella, Andrew Turner

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Following the decision of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) to start negotiations for a legally binding treaty to end plastic pollution, discussions and reflections are ongoing on why and how plastic chemicals and polymers of concern should be integrated into the global plastics treaty. One of the points that has been identified as requiring attention is the reduction of the complexity of the composition of plastic objects. This article, addressed to decision-makers and other stake-holders involved in the negotiations, illustrates in a practical and graphical way what complexity means in the case of the presence of inorganic additives.

Response Of Co2 And Ch4 Emissions From Arctic Tundra Soils To A Multifactorial Manipulation Of Water Table, Temperature And Thaw Depth, K Best, D Zona, E Briant, C-T Lai, Da Lipson, Kr Mcewing, Sj Davidson, Wc Oechel Nov 2023

Response Of Co2 And Ch4 Emissions From Arctic Tundra Soils To A Multifactorial Manipulation Of Water Table, Temperature And Thaw Depth, K Best, D Zona, E Briant, C-T Lai, Da Lipson, Kr Mcewing, Sj Davidson, Wc Oechel

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Significant uncertainties persist concerning how Arctic soil tundra carbon emission responds to environmental changes. In this study, 24 cores were sampled from drier (high centre polygons and rims) and wetter (low centre polygons and troughs) permafrost tundra ecosystems. We examined how soil CO2 and CH4 fluxes responded to laboratory-based manipulations of soil temperature (and associated thaw depth) and water table depth, representing current and projected conditions in the Arctic. Similar soil CO2 respiration rates occurred in both the drier and the wetter sites, suggesting that a significant proportion of soil CO2 emission occurs via anaerobic respiration under water-saturated conditions in …

Smallholder Farmer Resilience As A Pillar Of Climate-Smart Agriculture: A Review, Michael B. Madin Mr, Daniel Kweku B. Inkoom Professor, Charles A. Bamfo Jr

Journal of Environmental Sustainability

This systematic review synthesizes and assesses scientific literature publications (n=42), to identify and depict the focus of climate change adaptations and resilience research on smallholder farmers in the savannah ecological zone (SAZ). We found substantive studies providing evidence of climate impacts, with adverse consequences on both human and environmental systems. Adaptive actions are being employed to manage the changing conditions as response to climate impacts. Notably, most research efforts are currently restricted to impacts on adaptation, food security, and vulnerability, with a very rare focus on climate resilience and the effects of adaptive actions. Hence, the possible maladaptation outcomes, which …

Demand for Anatomy and Physiology (AP) courses is increasing with the popularity of health care professions in the United States. Institutions are adopting blended mode of delivery in AP classes for its practicality. This mode allows implementation of multimodal pedagogy in the curriculum. Hence, students get to choose the resource that matches their learning preferences; understanding student needs is instrumental in enhancing learning experiences in any course. This study aimed to assess the impact of audio-visual interactive media (AVIM) on performance and satisfaction in the virtual lectures of blended AP courses. This study was conducted in two blended AP courses …

Russian Involvement In Frozen Conflicts Of The Post Soviet Space As A Means Of Geopolitical Positioning, Mary Giandjian Nov 2023

Russian Involvement In Frozen Conflicts Of The Post Soviet Space As A Means Of Geopolitical Positioning, Mary Giandjian

Governance: The Political Science Journal at UNLV

Upon the Soviet Union’s collapse, in a short time the once Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) became fifteen distinctly sovereign states, coupled by a sum of de facto states. The sum of these de facto states, realized from frozen conflicts, endure a distinct type of instability in Russia’s near abroad, where reconciliation is temporary given the frequent resumption of hostilities. In this paper, I detail major events of frozen conflicts in the Post Soviet Space, from South Ossetia to Nagorno-Karabakh, evaluating the Russian involvement of each de facto state’s respective frozen conflict. The combination of historical analysis and case …

Amsler, Andrew Klein, Aaron W. Galloway, Katrin Iken, James B. Mcclintock, Sabrina Heiser, Alex T. Lowe, Julie Schram, Ross Whippo

Faculty, Staff, and Students

Macroalgal forests dominate shallow hard bottom areas along the northern portion of the Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP). Macroalgal biomass and diversity are known to be dramatically lower in the southern WAP and at similar latitudes around Antarctica, but few reports detail the distributions of macroalgae or associated macroinvertebrates in the central WAP. We used satellite imagery to identify 14 sites differing in sea ice coverage but similar in terms of turbidity along the central WAP. Fleshy macroalgal cover was strongly, negatively correlated with ice concentration, but there was no significant correlation between macroinvertebrate cover and sea ice. Overall community (all …

Economic Impact Of The Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District On The Regional Economy, 2014-2022, Mark Henning, Randall Jackson, William M. Bowen

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

The Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD), the largest conservancy district in Ohio, initiated a significant, multi-year capital improvement plan in 2014 in response to increasing revenues associated with Utica Shale development. This study used input-output analysis to estimate the regional economic impact of MWCD’s spending on infrastructure improvements and related operations from 2014 through 2022. Cleveland State University’s Energy Policy Center found that MWCD’s $182.1 million in capital spending during the study period resulted in $486.8 million of gross output (total economic activity of all sales/revenues), $221.9 million of value added (gross output minus intermediate inputs), $135.6 million in labor …
