Beyond Whiteness: Revisiting Jews In Ethnic America, Jonathan Karp
Beyond Whiteness: Revisiting Jews In Ethnic America, Jonathan Karp
The Jewish Role in American Life: An Annual Review
The concept of ethnicity, once in vogue, has largely gone out of fashion among twenty-first-century social scientists, now replaced by models of assimilation defined in terms of the construction of whiteness and white supremacy. Beyond Whiteness: Revisiting Jews in Ethnic America explores the benefits of reconfiguring the ethnic concept as a tool to analyze the experiences of twentieth-century American Jews—not only in relation to other “white” groups of European descent, but also African Americans and Asian Americans, among others. The essays presented here, ranging from comparative studies of Jews and Asians as “model minorities” to the examination of postethnic “Jews …
Jews And Urban Life, Leonard J. Greenspoon
Jews And Urban Life, Leonard J. Greenspoon
Studies in Jewish Civilization
Jews and Urban Life recognizes that throughout their long history, Jews have often inhabited cities. The reality of this urban experience ranged from ghetto restrictions to robust participation in a range of civic and social activities. Essays in this collection present relevant examples from within the Jewish community itself, moving historically from the biblical period to the modern-day State of Israel. Taking a comparative approach while recognizing the particulars of individual instances, authors examine these phenomena from a wide variety of approaches, genres, and media. Interdisciplinary and accessibly written, the articles display a multitude of instances throughout history showing the …

Living Among Wildlife: Elevating Human-Wildlife Interactions And Coexistence, Bridget Rebecca Murphy
Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects
After a semester of learning, both in class and in nature, my writing honed in further on this human-nature divide. To me, I see humans as part of nature – as we are mammals, animals, part of the food chain, biological beings no higher than others on our planet. We have simply constructed this false narrative around us within our societies, minds and media that embeds this division between us and nature, between us and wildlife. Humans have been managing, stewarding, living off and within landscapes for thousands of years. As time and technology evolved, a lot of people began …

Leaf Thermal Regulation Strategies Of Canopy Species Across Four Vegetation Types Along A Temperature And Precipitation Gradient, Yingying Zhou, Nawatbhrist Kitudom, Sophie Fauset, Martijn Slot, Zexin Fan, Jianping Wang, Weiwei Liu, Hua Lin
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The ecophysiological processes of leaves are more related to leaf temperature (Tl) than air temperature (Ta). Transpiration and leaf physical traits enable plants to maintain Tl within a thermal range. However, it is challenging to quantitatively study leaf thermal regulation strategies, due to the complex interaction between thermal effects of transpiration and leaf physical traits. We utilized a 3-T method that compares Tl, Ta, and Tn (the temperature of non-transpiring leaves) investigate thermal regulation strategies of dominant canopy species in four vegetation types, including a savanna woodland, a tropical rain forest, a subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest, and a temperate mixed …

Bilingualism has become an increasingly common phenomenon in today’s globalized world, with many children growing up exposed to two or more languages. As a result, there has been growing interest among researchers in understanding the impact of bilingualism on thinking development in young and children. Some studies confirmed that bilingualism can have a positive effect on children’s perception cognitive development, particularly in the zones of attention control, Operational memory, and cognitive flexibility. Dual-language learners may also have better Planning and organization skills, such as task-switching and inhibitory control, compared to monolingual children. These cognitive advantages may be due to the …

The Contribution Of Principlism To Foster Ethical And Clinical Reciprocity In Resolving Healthcare Dilemmas, Dominic Glorioso
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Principlism is an ethical method that uses an analytical framework based on a set of principles that can function as guidelines for healthcare professionals. The term was made
famous by the work of two bioethicists, Tom L. Beauchamp and James F. Childress. Their book, Principles of Biomedical Ethics and its multiple editions described a set of norms that are basic
for biomedical ethics. The first edition of their book was published in 1979, and the ninth edition in 2019. Its persistence and durability speak for themselves. In addition, their writings made
famous the four bioethical principles of respect for Autonomy, …

Enrichment-Planting With Pines Alters Fuel Amount And Structure In Endangered Araucaria Araucana Forests In Northwestern Patagonia, Argentina, Sofia Cingolani, Ignacio A. Mundo, Ivan Barbera, Andrés Holz, Thomas T. Veblen, Juan Paritsis
Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations
The introduction of non-native tree species for large-scale afforestation may alter the fire regime of native ecosystems by modifying fuel proprieties. We quantified changes in fuel abundance and structure resulting from the establishment of commercial Pinus spp. plantations in Araucaria araucana ecosystems in northwestern Patagonia, Argentina. Specifically, we assessed the amount, distribution, and condition (live/dead) of surface and standing fine fuel in A. araucana stands with mature pine plantations (i.e. > 20 cm dbh) and in stands dominated only by A. araucana (control). Our study shows that both types of stands are prone to wildfires, but pine plantations have fuel characteristics …

Review Of Disputed Archival Heritage, Eric C. Stoykovich
Review Of Disputed Archival Heritage, Eric C. Stoykovich
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
This review situates Disputed Archival Heritage, ed. James Lowry, the 2023 winner of the Waldo Gifford Leland Award of the Society of American Archivists, within the wider context of Anglophone North American archivists' provinciality. The book provides a series of well-researched case studies, some based on personal experiences, which illuminate the history of archives and cultural heritage collections that have been contested by multiple geopolitical entities or their archival representatives. Inclusion of stories from the global South is one of the innovative facets of the book that improves upon the volume Displaced Archives (2017), also edited by James Lowry.
Rapid Transit In Southern Mississippi, Strohmeyer And Wyman
Rapid Transit In Southern Mississippi, Strohmeyer And Wyman
African-Americana Postcards and Photographs
A rare stereoview or stereograph double image of a Black family in a two wheeled cart being driven by Devon Oxen. These Devon oxen are of an old breed, medium size, their distinctive color is red. In the background is a typical cottage of the region. It is made of unpainted pine shingles, and, as it may be larger than usual, may have two rooms in the interior. Behind the cottage is a small field of cotton such as is usually to be found there. In the Southern part of the Mississippi, scenes of this kind were far from uncommon. …

Clausewitzian Theory Of War In The Age Of Cognitive Warfare, Amber Brittain-Hale, Amber Brittain-Hale
Clausewitzian Theory Of War In The Age Of Cognitive Warfare, Amber Brittain-Hale, Amber Brittain-Hale
Education Division Scholarship
We can reconceptualise warfare by contrasting Clausewitz with the modern practice of cognitive warfare, as evidenced by Ukraine’s defence methodologies. The strategic orchestration of ‘infopolitik’ and the sophisticated use of social media can shape narratives and public perception. This article revisits Clausewitz’s tenet of war as a political instrument and juxtaposes it with contemporary conflict’s multidimensional tactics. By scrutinising Ukraine’s digital and psychological warfare tactics, one may question the applicability of Clausewitz’s framework, seeking to understand if these novel dimensions of warfare compel a redefinition or an expansion of his thesis to navigate the complexities of contemporary geopolitical confrontations.
