Road From Washington City To Buffalo, S. H. Long

Genesee Valley Historical Reprints

After reading Road from Washington City to Buffalo, anyone driving along U.S. Route 15 or another old north-south route through New York State, Pennsylvania, and Maryland can better appreciate the formidable engineering task of road building in that region during the early days of the nation. This slim volume, originally published in 1827, is a rich source of information (including place names) of the Washington-Buffalo “corridor” in the 1820s.

The report begins with a very helpful index (more like a table of contents) that corresponds to the 77 numbered paragraphs comprising the main text, in which is described not …

Article, The Florida Pirate, John Howison, Keith Lewis Simmons Dec 1820

Article, The Florida Pirate, John Howison, Keith Lewis Simmons

Early Visions Bucket

"'The Florida Pirate' was first published in Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine in 1821. This historically significant and, at the time, socially relevant, piece of fiction was written by one of the magazine’s most notable and prolific authors of “tales of terror,” John Howison (1797-1859). Howison tells the story of a black pirate captain, who is ruthless yet human; who struggles to overcome the violent oppression associated with his past enslavement; and who emerges as European powers and the United States come to terms with pressing political questions."

Peter Kean To Susan Niemcewicz, May 10, 1804, Peter Philip James Kean

Liberty Hall Collection 1800s

Peter Kean wrote from Princeton, New Jersey to Susan Niemcewicz in Elizabethtown, New Jersey. Peter’s journey was very agreeable by the amusing and instructing conversation of Mr. and Mrs. Kollock. If Uncle R’s family went to England, Peter feared he would never see them again. If Susan saw them, Peter asked that she tell them he would never forget their kindness to him and would always remain their grateful and affectionate nephew and cousin. Susan did not mention Mrs. Williams in her letter and Peter asked if she was well. Was met with a kind reception from Miss Smiths and …
