Whole Human Pedagogy: A Novel Framework For Education Abroad Praxis, Anna N. Kelly
Whole Human Pedagogy: A Novel Framework For Education Abroad Praxis, Anna N. Kelly
Dissertation Collection
This dissertation theoretically derives and qualitatively explores a novel framework called whole human pedagogy for education abroad. Drawing on Thompson (2017) and hooks (1994), as well as decolonial theory and critical pedagogy, this dissertation sets forth whole human pedagogy with four tenets—embodiment, emotions, belonging, and becoming—which collectively provide a framework for designing and analyzing education abroad programs. This qualitative study collected data from seventeen practitioners who work with undergraduate, U.S.-based, outbound education abroad programs via semi-structured interviews about their perspectives on theory and practice regarding whole human pedagogy. Findings offer preliminary confirmation of whole human pedagogy’s applicability to education abroad …
Affective Infrastructure And The Chilean Memorial Museum, Diego Borgsdorf Fuenzalida
Affective Infrastructure And The Chilean Memorial Museum, Diego Borgsdorf Fuenzalida
Pitzer Senior Theses
The civic-military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990) represented a period of unprecedented political violence in Chile — a time in which the government of the socialist president Salvador Allende was overthrown in a bloody coup d’etat, army and police forces detained and tortured people suspected of affiliation with leftist activism, and hundreds of thousands of people were exiled from national territory. Post-dictatorship transitional governments have materialized a contested apparatus of institutions with the purpose of memorializing the victims of such violence, principal among them being the memorial museum. Based on ethnographic and collections research as a worker in the Museo …
How Does The Transition From A Subject-Based Allocation Fund Structure To A One-Pot Allocation Fund Structure Impact Librarian Spending And Attitudes Toward Spending?: One Libraries' Experience With A One-Pot Allocation Approach For One-Time Acquisitions Spending, Anne Larrivee
University Libraries Faculty Publications
Every fiscal year, academic libraries must decide how to fairly allocate funds for their collection of one-time materials. A common approach is to divide these one-time funds between subject areas based on historic, quantitative, or expressed needs. A less mainstream approach is to combine all these funds into a single source of funds for one-time purchases. This article examines librarian response after transitioning from a subject-based allocation to a one-pot allocation approach for its one-time acquisitions. Methods of expenditure analysis and semi-structured interviews were used to assess the approach's effectiveness and librarian attitudes. The results of this study provide a …

Environment And Belief: Investigating The Dakota Archeological Record, Anna Kay Wiitanen-Eggen
Environment And Belief: Investigating The Dakota Archeological Record, Anna Kay Wiitanen-Eggen
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
The oral traditions and histories of a people’s belief systems are one means by which the relationships between a people and their environment are embodied. Environmental aspects of a people’s belief system are reflected in their use of their habited space(s) because beliefs help structure actions. Ergo, an examination of a people’s oral traditions and histories has the potential to provide valuable insight to the archeological record of the places potentially occupied by their ancestors or close relatives. Investigation of this aspect of archeology is a relatively new pursuit and is almost completely unexplored in Minnesota. The relationship between the …
Searching For Traces Of Ecological Nodes In The Formation Of Resilient Coastal Areas : Gulf Of Saros, Gildis Tachir, Ahmed Alali
Searching For Traces Of Ecological Nodes In The Formation Of Resilient Coastal Areas : Gulf Of Saros, Gildis Tachir, Ahmed Alali
Journal of Urban Culture Research
Building the resilience of a dynamic environment is a difficult task, but coastal areas shaped by natural formations have existing resilience points. This article attempts to find traces of elements that identify points of resilience. The method applied in this effort is the mapping method. In line with this method, it is aimed to investigate the traces of ecology nodes by overlapping the map information of the place with different elements with axonometric graphical expression. The Gulf of Saros, which is on the eastern coast of the Aegean Sea, was selected as the sample area of the study. The geographical …
Who Is "Women's Health" For? Lgbtq+ Inclusion In Sexual And Reproductive Health Care, Evan Thomas England
Who Is "Women's Health" For? Lgbtq+ Inclusion In Sexual And Reproductive Health Care, Evan Thomas England
Doctoral Dissertations
Throughout modern Western history, access to fully affirming and supportive sexual and reproductive health care (SRH) has been denied to most women and sexual and gender minorities. Also, as demonstrated by the ubiquity of the term “women’s health,” SRH often reflects a cisgender heterosexual (cishet) women-centered approach, alienating transgender, non-binary, gender nonconforming, and sexual minority individuals who are not cishet women but are in equal need of the same life-saving screenings, treatments, and counseling services. Due to the operationalization and reproduction of gendered ideologies and unequal social hierarchies within SRH, inadequate access to quality sexual health education for youth, and …

Law In Inaction: The Origins And Implications Of Chronic Drug Law Underenforcement In One Southern County, Kay L. Levine, Elizabeth Griffiths, Joshua M. Hinkle, Volkan Topalli
Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology
Common accounts of police and prosecutorial nonenforcement discretion tend to valorize individual declination choices as demonstrations of mercy and resource constraint. Simultaneously, these accounts critique blanket nonenforcement policies as being outside the bounds of executive authority. Both accounts fail to consider the origins and implications of nonenforcement decisions made by police officers and prosecutors in individual cases that, when taken together, amount to significant underenforcement of an otherwise valid law.
This Article fills the gap between these differing perspectives by empirically examining the hidden and habitual underenforcement of technically valid drug-free-zone (DFZ) laws in one Southern county. Data matching the …
County Prosecution And State Preemption: The Confusing Politics Of Criminal Legal Reform And Backlash, John Pfaff
County Prosecution And State Preemption: The Confusing Politics Of Criminal Legal Reform And Backlash, John Pfaff
Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology
Urban reform prosecutors, who are generally elected at the county level, find themselves in a tricky political spot. On the one hand. most urban counties are in many ways “too big” for reformers: they include large numbers of suburban voters who generally dislike reform, in no small part because they are relatively unaffected by the decisions prosecutors make. On the other hand, these counties are also often “too small”: they lack the political power to resist efforts by conservative state legislatures and governors to rein in, if not outright remove, reformers. This Article examines both vulnerabilities. It first maps out …

Trauma-Informed Digital Health Interventions: A Scoping Review, Amelea Lowery
Public Health Theses
Background: Trauma exposure is a pervasive issue around the world and the impacts of trauma can be long lasting and detrimental to individual and population health outcomes. Trauma responses can influence and determine an individual or community’s approach in seeking supportive resources. Given the critical role of supportive resources and the prevalent use of technology and internet use, it is essential to understand how digital health interventions contribute to addressing trauma explicitly. This scoping review aims to explore the landscape of trauma-informed digital health interventions for adults, assess their outcomes, and identify their measurable impacts across various settings. Methods: A scoping …

More Alike Than Not: The Open Access Preferences Of Humanities Scholars, Rachel Scott, Ana Dubnjakovic
Faculty and Staff Publications
Several studies have noted that humanists have not been as quick or enthusiastic in their adoption of Open Access (OA) as their colleagues in other disciplines. This article leverages the Ithaka S+R US 2021 Faculty Survey to provide contextualized analysis of the OA and Open Education Resources (OER) preferences of humanities scholars, as well as some practices related to OA and OER, relative to their colleagues in other disciplines. Findings suggest that although humanists do stand apart in many OA preferences, the small effect sizes render these differences less important than previously suspected. The implications of these findings are considered …

Doctor of Education (Ed.D.)
This Improvement Science Dissertation in Practice investigated the impact of professional development with coaching support on a novice teacher’s self-efficacy, with the goal of improving novice teacher retention in an urban district. In Phase 1 of this study, the researcher determined that the problem of practice, novice teacher attrition, impacted students’ academic and behavioral outcomes. In Phase 2, the researcher offered a six-module professional development course, in-person and online, that included classroom management strategies for teachers in their first year of employment. The researcher designed the intervention to include coaching from the novice teachers’ assigned district mentors to support implementation. …

Racial Capitalism, Climate Change, And Ecocide, Carmen G. Gonzalez
Faculty Publications & Other Works
Lawyers, scholars, and activists have long sought to incorporate ecocide into the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court to address corporate and governmental impunity for massive and severe ecological damage, including the harms caused by climate change. This Article uses the framework of racial capitalism to examine and critique the proposed criminalization of ecocide. Coined by South African scholars and activists and refined by political theorist Cedric Robinson, the theory of racial capitalism offers valuable insights on the root causes of the climate crisis and the manifold injustices it inflicts on marginalized states and peoples. While most discussions of …

Faculty Publications & Other Works
In this Essay, I argue that the climate crisis has provided the global finance industry an opportunity to make exorbitant profits from majority Black and Brown countries in the Global South. I show how the global finance industry is leveraging its muscle over climate-vulnerable and heavily indebted countries in the Global South through complex financial transactions. These transactions commodify nature and the biodiversity resources of these Global South countries. In return, these Global South countries borrow capital to address the climate crisis and to pay off their debts. This borrowing that invariably comes at high interest rates, especially through bond …

In July 2023, the United States and the European Union introduced the Data Privacy Framework (DPF), introducing the third generation of cross-border data transfer agreements constituting adequacy with respect to personal data transfers under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) between the European Union (EU) and the US. This framework may be used in cross-border healthcare and research relationships, which are highly desirable and increasingly essential to innovative health technology development and health services deployment. A reliable model meeting EU adequacy requirements could enhance the transfer of patient and research participant data. While the DPF might present a familiar terrain …
Death And Discretion: Some Thoughts On Living, Barry Sullivan
Death And Discretion: Some Thoughts On Living, Barry Sullivan
Faculty Publications & Other Works
Fifty years ago, James Boyd White inspired a quiet revolution in the world of legal studies. He encouraged lawyers to think more deeply about questions of law and justice by drawing upon the humanities, which provided sources and methods well beyond those that the legal academy then recognized as legitimate ways of thinking and talking about law. Among other things, Professor White insisted that there was a morality to authentic legal argument and decision making that required a close and engaged reading of texts, an understanding of community, and an openness to being persuaded by others. It was a courageous …

From Streets To Stats: A Statistical Analysis Of The Quantity Of Illegal Narcotics Seized In The United States, Zachary T. Strickland
From Streets To Stats: A Statistical Analysis Of The Quantity Of Illegal Narcotics Seized In The United States, Zachary T. Strickland
Tenor of Our Times
This study aims to determine how seven different variables affect the total quantity of illegal narcotics seized. These seven variables include four dichotomous and three continuous variables, each striving to teach readers how they relate to the quantity of narcotics seized across specific states. My goal for this project is to figure out if there is any relationship to help law enforcement fight the war on drugs. With the continuing apparent rise of this war, this study is crucial in determining potential relationships between a state's characteristics and the quantity of illegal narcotics they forcibly take possession of. I further …

Groundwater Vulnerability Assessment And Dye Trace Of War Fork River In Daniel Boone National Forest, Will Hemenover
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Daniel Boone National Forest plays a key role in preserving much of Kentucky’s karst regions, natural resources including timber, mineral deposits, and biodiversity, including over 300 species of concern. The health of these environments is determined by surface and groundwater streams in the forest, and karst systems are an integral environment where these systems are active. War Fork, a tributary to the Kentucky River in Jackson County, Kentucky, is a remote and understudied hydrologic system in the Daniel Boone National Forest that contains recreational and logging land uses. Due to karst areas being susceptible to contamination because of rapid water …

Distressed Community Index In Patients Undergoing Carotid Endarterectomy In Medicare-Linked Vqi Registry, Carmen Pajarillo
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
IntroductionThe association between community socioeconomic distress and carotid endarterectomy (CEA) outcomes is understudied. We therefore analyzed the association between the Distressed Community Index (DCI), a zip-code level measure of community distress, with 36-month post-CEA mortality and readmission.
MethodsWe thus examined patients undergoing CEA between 2015-2019 in the Vascular Quality Initiative database linked with Medicare claims outcomes data. Patients’ DCI ranged from 0 (not distressed) to 100 (distressed). The 36-month mortality was assessed by DCI quintiles using the Kaplan-Meir cumulative incidence function (CIF) and for linear DCI, using Cox regression stratified on site. For 90-day readmission, we used CIF curves and …

Designing Resilient Communities: Landscape Architecture Strategies To Counteract The Urban Heat Island Effect And Enhance Thermal Comfort In Vulnerable Neighborhoods In Dallas, Texas, Angelica E. Villalobos
Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive
As cities continue to expand and temperatures rise, extreme weather conditions become more frequent (Tan et al., 2009). This urban heat phenomenon significantly impacts the environment and the health and well-being of living organisms, including humans (Bullard, 2011). Unfortunately, those who live in poverty are particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of urban heat island-induced heat (Balbus & Malina, 2009). To address this issue, this research evaluates landscape architecture design strategies that mitigate the urban heat island and enhance thermal comfort in vulnerable suburban neighborhoods in Dallas, Texas. Recommendations are provided for enhancing resident thermal comfort in single-family residential neighborhoods, …
Designing Dreams, Not Divides: Speculative Toolkit For Assessing Community Engagement Strategies – South Oak Cliff Renaissance Park In Dallas, Texas, Heena Shrestha
Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive
Community engagement in park design is critical in landscape architecture as it concerns the design in underserved communities where systemic inequities limit access to high-quality public spaces. The purpose of this thesis is to develop a toolkit to help landscape architects measure how successful their community engagement practices are in their design process. This toolkit addresses a critical gap in landscape architecture practice, where existing case studies often focus on environmental or social outcomes but need more methods for evaluating community engagement. By providing a structured approach, this toolkit enables landscape architects to measure, demonstrate, and validate their community engagement …
