Radically Feminist Or Monstrously Feminine?: Witches And Goddesses In Guadagnino's Suspiria (2018), Lindsay Macumber Apr 2024

Radically Feminist Or Monstrously Feminine?: Witches And Goddesses In Guadagnino's Suspiria (2018), Lindsay Macumber

Journal of Religion & Film

Guadagnino’s 2018 remake of Suspiria explicitly and implicitly incorporates two connected myths, witchcraft and goddess centered matriarchal prehistory. The fact that each of these myths have been claimed by feminists in myriad ways may explain Guadagnino’s claim that Suspiria is a great feminist film that escapes the male gaze. In this article, I argue that Guadagnino’s representation of these myths lays bare their misogynistic origins and perpetuates, rather than subverts, patriarchal power structures.

A Communication-Efficient Federated Learning Framework For Sustainable Development Using Lemurs Optimizer, Mohammed Azmi Al-Betar, Ammar Kamal Abasi, Zaid Abdi Alkareem Alyasseri, Salam Fraihat, Raghad Falih Mohammed

Machine Learning Faculty Publications

The pressing need for sustainable development solutions necessitates innovative data-driven tools. Machine learning (ML) offers significant potential, but faces challenges in centralized approaches, particularly concerning data privacy and resource constraints in geographically dispersed settings. Federated learning (FL) emerges as a transformative paradigm for sustainable development by decentralizing ML training to edge devices. However, communication bottlenecks hinder its scalability and sustainability. This paper introduces an innovative FL framework that enhances communication efficiency. The proposed framework addresses the communication bottleneck by harnessing the power of the Lemurs optimizer (LO), a nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithm. Inspired by the cooperative foraging behavior of lemurs, the …

The Mitre And Crown: The Relationship Between The Church And Crown In Norman-Angevin England, 1066-1215, Isaac Copeland Apr 2024

The Mitre And Crown: The Relationship Between The Church And Crown In Norman-Angevin England, 1066-1215, Isaac Copeland

Honors Theses

From the Norman invasion in 1066 to Magna Carta in 1215, the balance of power between the Mitre and the Crown in Norman- Angevin England shifted from being defined through personal relationships to being defined by charters. This shift occurred due to a cycle of conflict and cooperation between Church and Crown, and during the periods of peace, kings, archbishops, and popes created models that delineated boundaries of power between the Church and the Crown. Over a century and a half, four functioning models emerged: the Crown-led Personal model created by William the Conqueror and Archbishop Lanfranc from 1066-1089, the …

Dipl 6002 International Organizations, Purnaka L. De Silva Ph.D.

Diplomacy Syllabi

The focus and aim of this Course – DIPL 6002: International Organizations – is to understand International Organizations from the vantage point of the concept of Global Governance. Global governance, central to international relations, refers to the loose framework of global regulation – both institutional and normative – that constrains conduct and attempts to maintain order. When we speak of order, we need to specify order for whom – states, peoples, groups, or individuals. Order may denote any regular or discernible pattern of relationships that are stable over time or may additionally refer to a condition that allows certain goals …

Instructional Message Design, Volume 3

Message design consists of signs and symbols that play a crucial role in guiding our daily lives. text, images, videos, graphics, and diagrams are essential tools for communication and education. However, individuals with visual impairments are not able to fully access this visual content that plays such a critical part of our daily lives. Therefore, there is a need to create educational material that can be accessed by all learners including those with visual impairments. This chapter explores practical strategies that instructional designers, teachers, professors, and instructors can use to provide an inclusive learning experience for learners with visual impairments. …

Exploration Of Historic Inequities In Government Funding Programs Towards Native Americans With Contemporary Analysis, Nathaniel S. Snyder Apr 2024

Exploration Of Historic Inequities In Government Funding Programs Towards Native Americans With Contemporary Analysis, Nathaniel S. Snyder

Washington Semester Program

Native American communities across the United States have perennially struggled with disparities in government funding, resulting in a wide variety of socio-economic issues. Although ongoing efforts are in place to rectify these disparities there persists substantial gaps in funding allocation. Historical, socioeconomic, and institutional factors have contributed to these inequities, perpetuating a cycle of poverty and marginalization. Despite this, promising examples of successful funding models and large-scale initiatives provide valuable insights and hope for the future. The COVID-19 pandemic, although detrimental to society, introduced more resources to Native Americans than ever before due to supplemental programs. This paper analyzes the …

Climate Change And Voluntary Private Land Conservation: A Case Study Of Working Lands For Wildlife, Abigail Thompson Apr 2024

Climate Change And Voluntary Private Land Conservation: A Case Study Of Working Lands For Wildlife, Abigail Thompson

School of Professional Studies

This case study examines the role, impact, and future of voluntary private land conservation (VPLC) programs, with a particular focus on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Working Lands for Wildlife (WLFW) initiative. Climate change and population growth pose a significant threat to public land conservation, making alternative methods like WLFW increasingly important. WLFW is a relatively successful and well-received program, but it is still young and comparatively smaller than other VPLC programs operated by the government. Publications by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, WLFW partner organizations, and relevant scholarly articles were utilized in order to assess WLFW’s success independently and …

What Will Happen To Cleo In The Wave Of Affirmative Action Litigation, Erin Lain Apr 2024

What Will Happen To Cleo In The Wave Of Affirmative Action Litigation, Erin Lain

Belmont Law Review

The Students for Fair Admission (“SFFA”) decision has upended how law schools conduct admission, changing the decades-old practices of considering race as one of many factors in the admissions process. Despite the narrow use of race in the admission process, the legal profession is still almost 81% white, suggesting the use of affirmative action has not been a substantial boost to minority enrollment in law school. Despite the low impact, the United States Supreme Court proceeded with a sweeping decision declaring the use of racial checkboxes unconstitutional and limiting the use of race in admissions to evidence of nonracial attributes …

Analyzing Deaths From Extreme Weather Events And Their Relevance To The Life Insurance Industry, Erika Roof Apr 2024

Analyzing Deaths From Extreme Weather Events And Their Relevance To The Life Insurance Industry, Erika Roof

Honors Projects in Biological and Biomedical Sciences

This study aims to discover the effect of extreme weather events on the life insurance industry. As climate change progresses and global temperatures increase, extreme weather events, which are separated into drought, freeze, severe storms, tropical cyclones, wildfires, and winter storms are expected to occur more often. Extreme weather events not only impact the local economies but increase local death rates as well. Using data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NOAA NCEI), this study uses regression analysis to examine the correlation between extreme weather and mortality data. Time series regression analysis suggests that …

Dipl 4806/6806 Political Economy Of Latin America And The Caribbean, Benjamin Goldfrank Phd. Apr 2024

Dipl 4806/6806 Political Economy Of Latin America And The Caribbean, Benjamin Goldfrank Phd.

Diplomacy Syllabi

This seminar provides an overview of major approaches to the study of political economy in Latin America and the Caribbean, past and present development trends, and recent debates over economic policy. The course begins with classic questions of the mutual reciprocal relations between politics and economics before covering the major debates between structural and institutional approaches. It proceeds by examining the switch from import-substituting industrialization to export-led growth models in the 1980s and 1990s and the effects of and reactions to the rise of neoliberal economic policies and then the commodity boom, as well as race and racism in the …

“Don’T Stop Believin’”: Dante’S And Christian’S Journey To Heaven, Austin Cochrane Apr 2024

“Don’T Stop Believin’”: Dante’S And Christian’S Journey To Heaven, Austin Cochrane

English Senior Capstone

Dante's "Divine Comedy" and John Bunyan's "The Pilgrim's Progress" both encounter a protagonist who is journeying with the goal of reaching heaven in mind. During this journey, they are each met with and guided by various characters. In my paper, I focus on Virgil and Beatrice in "The Divine Comedy", and Evangelist and Hopeful in "The Pilgrim's Progress." Along with these guides, the geography that Dante and Christian each encounter is symbolic of a maturation of faith, as well as many Catholic and Protestant themes that Dante and Bunyan practiced.

Taking Our Position: Repairing The Breach In The Pipeline To The Legal Profession By Transforming The Impact Of Bias Against Black Girls In Student Discipline, Hon. Tiffany W. Brewer Apr 2024

Taking Our Position: Repairing The Breach In The Pipeline To The Legal Profession By Transforming The Impact Of Bias Against Black Girls In Student Discipline, Hon. Tiffany W. Brewer

Belmont Law Review

This Article implores the legal profession to intervene in promoting accountability in remediating implicit bias and discrimination in school discipline decisions disproportionately impacting Black girls’ educational outcomes, given their significant impact in disrupting the pipeline to the legal profession. The lack of accountability for disparate school discipline policies has resulted in little progress in decreasing the school-to-prison pipeline for Black girls. As a result, failures to eradicate implicit bias and discrimination in educational systems threaten the pipeline of future Black women law students, lawyers, and judges. This Article contends that if the bias in current school discipline policies toward Black …

A Summary Of Two Decades Of Qtl And Candidate Genes That Control Seed Tocopherol Contents In Maize (Zea Mays L.), My Abdelmajid Kassem, Dounya Knizia, Khalid Meksem

College of Health, Science, and Technology

Tocopherols are secondary metabolites synthesized through the shikimate biosynthetic pathway in the plastids of most plants. It is well known that ?–Tocopherol (vitamin E) has many health benefits for humans and animals; therefore, it is highly used in human and animal diets. Tocopherols vary considerably in most crop (and plant) species and within cultivars of the same species depending on environmental and growth conditions; tocopherol content is a polygenic, complex traits, and its inheritance is poorly understood. The objective of this review paper was to summarize all identified quantitative trait loci (QTL) that control seed tocopherols and related contents identified …

Essays On Spatial Sorting And Labor Markets, Ryungha Oh Apr 2024

Essays On Spatial Sorting And Labor Markets, Ryungha Oh

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

The dissertation consists of two independent essays that examine how worker and firm sorting across local labor markets shape both regional and aggregate economic outcomes and what are the policy implications. The first chapter of this dissertation studies why productive workers and firms locate together in dense cities. I develop a new theory of two-sided sorting in which both heterogeneous workers and firms sort across space. The location choices of workers and firms affect each other and endogenously generate spatial disparities in the presence of three essential forces: complementarity between worker and firm productivity, random matching within frictional local labor …

Social-Ecological Practice Theory And Human-Wildlife Interactions: People, Cattle, And Predators In Makgadikgadi, Botswana, Katherine Orrick Apr 2024

Social-Ecological Practice Theory And Human-Wildlife Interactions: People, Cattle, And Predators In Makgadikgadi, Botswana, Katherine Orrick

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

2024My dissertation delves into the complex interplay between human activities and wildlife dynamics, focusing on understanding and mitigating human-wildlife interactions (HWI) for sustainable coexistence. Overseeing and managing HWI requires acknowledging that the behavior and actions toward humans and wildlife are made up of local variations across both ecological and social processes. This intertwinement of ecological and social processes is complex; hence, conservation projects aiming to overcome human-wildlife conflict may, in fact, risk exacerbating it whenever either process is only superficially addressed. Ecologists, social scientists, and policy makers are challenged with a lack of knowledge surrounding subject-specific theory and language to …

“The Geopoetics Of An Undiscovered Continent: Eurasianism As A Writing Practice”, John Anthony Stachelski Apr 2024

“The Geopoetics Of An Undiscovered Continent: Eurasianism As A Writing Practice”, John Anthony Stachelski

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Drawing on extensive archival research and a comprehensive body of scholarship, this dissertation offers a critical reimagining of early 20th-century Eurasianism through the prism of literature and art. Beginning with the proto-Eurasianist schema introduced by Konstantin Leontiev in the 19th century, I argue that the influence of his deeply aestheticized combination of politics and religious thought is essential to understanding the work of Eurasianism’s founders Petr Savitsky and Petr Suvchinsky, the figures around whom the ideology’s major split occurred. This dissertation challenges the way Eurasianism has often been understood and portrayed in scholarship, and simultaneously presents an original argument about …

Desert Places: Transnational Formations Of Race, Region, And Empire In The Nineteenth-Century Pampas And Prairies, Colin Allen Young Apr 2024

Desert Places: Transnational Formations Of Race, Region, And Empire In The Nineteenth-Century Pampas And Prairies, Colin Allen Young

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation asks why, in the long nineteenth century, the desert became a defining American region. As opposed to our modern climatological understanding of desert, nineteenth-century deserts were understood by their settler colonists to be cultural wastelands bereft of “civilization.” By juxtaposing the visual culture of the South American pampas and the North American prairies—two critical hemispheric desert places—I reveal that approaching these grasslands as a shared cultural, political, and artistic zone is essential to writing a more integrated art history of the Americas. Far from being “deserted,” the pampas and the prairies were home to Indigenous and Afro-descendant communities …

Identifying The Multilevel Factors Influencing Provider Recommendations For Adolescent Vaccines, Mallory Kathryn Ellingson Apr 2024

Identifying The Multilevel Factors Influencing Provider Recommendations For Adolescent Vaccines, Mallory Kathryn Ellingson

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Health care provider (HCP) recommendations are a key predictor of vaccineacceptance among parents of adolescents. However, HCP recommendations for adolescent vaccines are not universal. In order to address disparities in HCP recommendations, we must first understand why recommendations vary. The factors that influence a HCP recommendation are multilevel. At the individual level, a HCP’s own knowledge, attitudes and beliefs about a vaccine can influence how or if they recommend the vaccine to a patient. At the interpersonal level, the characteristics of the patient can impact how a HCP perceives disease risk or need for a vaccine in their patient. At …

Bronze Age Prone Burials Of The Mongolian Gobi Desert: An Anthropological Study Of Mortuary Traditions, Bukhchuluun Dashzeveg Apr 2024

Bronze Age Prone Burials Of The Mongolian Gobi Desert: An Anthropological Study Of Mortuary Traditions, Bukhchuluun Dashzeveg

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

The Late Bronze Age (LBA) and Early Iron Age (EIA) in Mongolia witnessed significant changes in mortuary practices, particularly the transition from prone burials to the slab grave tradition. This dissertation investigates the complex interplay between socio-cultural, political, and ideological factors that shaped these transformations, focusing on the reuse of burial spaces at the Shiriin Chuluu site in the Gobi Desert. In attempting to better understand the prone burial tradition of the Gobi and eastern Mongolia, I focus specifically on the history and utility of the prone concept as a category; the emergence and spread of these practices as a …

Public Vs. Private: The Industrial Organization Of Education And Other Regulated Markets, Fernando Pereira Cordeiro Apr 2024

Public Vs. Private: The Industrial Organization Of Education And Other Regulated Markets, Fernando Pereira Cordeiro

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation studies two distinct but equally essential industries: higher education and water utilities. In the context of higher education, I investigate the impact of subsidies on equilibrium prices and quality levels. For water utilities, I explore the differences between public and private providers in terms of productivity and investment. A theme that emerges from these seemingly disparate analyses is how public provision or subsidies affect and contrast with private firms' behavior. Throughout this process, I use the lens and methods of Industrial Organization to conduct my analysis, a choice motivated by the inherent nature of imperfect competition that characterizes …

Essays On Housing, Inequality, And Spatial Mobility, Anthony Elias Tokman Apr 2024

Essays On Housing, Inequality, And Spatial Mobility, Anthony Elias Tokman

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

The first chapter of this dissertation uses parcel-level tax assessment and sales transaction data to estimate the stringency of housing unit density restrictions at the census tract level for 35 metropolitan areas in the United States, focusing on the period between 2000 and 2020. I do this by inferring the marginal regulatory "cost" of building an additional housing unit, conditioning on a parcel's total acreage and developed floor space. Regression on variables from the Wharton land use survey offers basic validation of this measure. I show that the inferred unit regulatory costs vary drastically across cities and neighborhoods; they tend …
