Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

BACKGROUND: Much evidence-based physical activity (PA) interventions have been tested and implemented in urban contexts. However, studies that adapt, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of these interventions in micropolitan rural contexts are needed. The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Active Ottumwa intervention to promote PA in a micropolitan community.

METHODS: Between 2013 - 2019, we implemented Active Ottumwa in a micropolitan setting, and subsequently implemented and evaluated its effectiveness using a Hybrid Type I design. In this paper, we describe the intervention's effectiveness in promoting PA. We collected PA data over 24 months from a cohort of …

Resonance: A Methodology And Pedagogy For Socially Just Storytelling, Helen Plevka-Jones Apr 2024

Resonance: A Methodology And Pedagogy For Socially Just Storytelling, Helen Plevka-Jones

Theses and Dissertations

Through a close analysis of Valeria Luiselli’s Lost Children Archive and a comparative analysis of the intertexts it references, this dissertation argues that literary scholars and literacy pedagogues can learn from sound studies and archival practices together to achieve more socially just reading, writing, and teaching. The novel narrates a family traveling across the United States, not only experiencing their own journey but also learning about past forced migrations upon the same land and present attempted migrations into the country. As they encounter and interact with different print, audio, and visual artifacts, the characters achieve a more inclusive and complex …

Middle-Earth’S Middleman: Exploring The Contradictory Positionalities Of Faramir In J.R.R. Tolkien’S 'The Lord Of The Rings', Kelsey A. Fuller-Shafer Apr 2024

Middle-Earth’S Middleman: Exploring The Contradictory Positionalities Of Faramir In J.R.R. Tolkien’S 'The Lord Of The Rings', Kelsey A. Fuller-Shafer

Journal of Tolkien Research

In the large pantheon of characters in The Lord of the Rings, Faramir stands out for his position of unbelonging, and is usually analyzed comparatively to other characters rather than in-depth in his own right. However, more focused considerations of Faramir can articulate the breadth of Tolkien’s influences that were incorporated into Middle-earth as well as the ways in which those influences conflicted with Tolkien's own moral compass, and thus needed to be openly challenged and modified. Those internal conflicts can be interrogated throughout Faramir’s contradictory positions within the literature, history, and societies that Middle-earth represents. His positioning in a …

Name, Image, And Likeness: Assesing One's "Brand Identity", Nathan Sharp

Liberty University Research Week

Our research will envelop the growing topic of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL). Unlike in recent years, collegiate athletes can now market themselves, similarly to professional athletes, and receive monetary compensation for things such as brand deals, corporate advertisements, and merchandise sales. The purpose of our research project is to further understand the phycological aspect behind this movement regarding how individual athletes view their own ‘brand identity.’ This encapsulates their perception in a public scene, athletic performance, and marketability based on geography, school notoriety, and sport. Quantitative data and important demographic information will be collected using the “Athlete Brand Identity …

Silent Cycles: Unveiling 19th-Century Perspectives On Menstruation, Women's Agency, And Societal Transformations, Anna Bennethum

Campus Research Month

In the 19th century, menstruation was a topic often vieled in silence and misinformation. Nonetheless, it is pivotal in discussions on women's agency and societal shifts. This paper explores 19th-century medical perceptions, the dissemination of reproductive knowledge through women's publications, and a case study of Adventist health publications. Through primary source analysis, this paper reveals how access to medical knowledge empowered women, especially in pursuing higher education. Additionally, examination of Adventist health publications showcases alternative remedies to menstrual disorders, granting women control over their reproductive health. This study illuminates the intersection of menstruation, women's agency, and societal change, emphasizing the …

Mechanical Characterization Of Hemp, Jute, And Flax Based Natural Fibre Composites For Non-Structural Applications In Aircraft And Automobiles, Ravi Kumar B

Theses and Dissertations

Demand for reducing energy consumption and detrimental environmental impacts after the effective lifetime of an engineering material are the major driving factors for the development of natural fibre reinforced composites (NFRCs) in various sectors. Compared to synthetic fibre like carbon-fibres or Kevlar, natural fibres provide several benefits including light weight, inexpensive, recyclability, superior specific strength, biodegradable, non-toxic during handling, and less energy intensive during manufacturing. This doctoral work presents observations from mechanical tests and interpretations on the suitability of natural fibre reinforced composites for less heavily loaded engineering applications areas.

In the first stage, jute, flax, and hemp fibres were …

Migratory And Non-Migratory Yellow Perch Differ In Locomotor Traits, Wade Poling Apr 2024

Migratory And Non-Migratory Yellow Perch Differ In Locomotor Traits, Wade Poling

Honors Theses

Yellow Perch (Perca flavescens) are widely distributed throughout the Midwest and are popular game fish and table fare. Seasonally, some eastern Lake Michigan Yellow Perch migrate into drowned river mouth lakes. Drowned river mouths are highly productive environments that also hold non-migratory resident Yellow Perch. Migration requires substantial energy expenditure; therefore, we expected migratory Yellow Perch to evolve locomotory traits that optimize energy efficiency for swimming long distances. We expected drowned river mouth lake resident Yellow Perch to evolve locomotory traits that enhance maneuverability, which are beneficial in avoiding predators, capturing prey, and moving through the structurally complex littoral …

Family Medicine’S Role In Addressing The Intersections Of Redlining And Climate Change, Daryl O. Traylor, Eboni E. Anderson, Brianna Clark, Alex M. Smith, Cooper K. Allenbrand Apr 2024

Family Medicine’S Role In Addressing The Intersections Of Redlining And Climate Change, Daryl O. Traylor, Eboni E. Anderson, Brianna Clark, Alex M. Smith, Cooper K. Allenbrand

Journal of Sustainable Social Impact

Redlining, the practice of discriminating against specific neighborhoods based on race and socioeconomic status, leads to persistent environmental hazards and socioeconomic inequalities that have lasting adverse health effects on their populations. Health disparities are further exacerbated through the concentration of environmental hazards, as well as the escalating impact of climate change, which poses an increased risk of respiratory illness, cardiovascular disease, mental health issues, heat-related illness, infectious diseases, food insecurity, and socioeconomic difficulties in redline neighborhoods.

This paper examines the interplay of redlining, climate change, and health disparities, with an emphasis on the enduring consequences for these marginalized communities. Through …

Michigan's Upper Peninsula Is The Cradle Of Paul Bunyan's Beehives, Thomas J. Straka Apr 2024

Michigan's Upper Peninsula Is The Cradle Of Paul Bunyan's Beehives, Thomas J. Straka

Upper Country: A Journal of the Lake Superior Region

One of the Michigan Upper Peninsula’s earliest industries was iron production. Iron furnaces (smelters) were part of that industry; these were primarily fueled by charcoal, produced in hundreds of charcoal kilns scattered across the Upper Peninsula. The four basic kiln designs (rectangular, round, conical, and beehive) were all used in the region, with the beehive design becoming the predominant form. James C. Cameron, Jr. is credited with developing the beehive charcoal kiln design while employed by Upper Peninsula iron furnaces. This design was first introduced to the Upper Peninsula, and then to Northeastern Wisconsin, Northern New York, and the Far …

High And Dry - Contextualizing Domestic Root Cellar Drains In Southern Ontario, Anatolijs Venovcevs Apr 2024

High And Dry - Contextualizing Domestic Root Cellar Drains In Southern Ontario, Anatolijs Venovcevs

Northeast Historical Archaeology

The subterranean root cellar is the quintessential feature of rural nineteenth-century archaeological sites in Ontario and much archaeological, historical, and architectural research on rural farmsteads has focused on defining and understanding these structures. However, this work has neglected an important component of this feature – the root cellar drain. This paper contextualizes these features within their broader nineteenth-century ideals of drainage and goes on to tackle the topic with the use of statistical analysis on the associated geographical, social, and economic attributes. The discussion presents opportunities that are present from the vast quantities of historical sites that have been excavated …

The First Foundation Of A Good House: Ferryland's Mansion House Kitchen, John D. Archer Apr 2024

The First Foundation Of A Good House: Ferryland's Mansion House Kitchen, John D. Archer

Northeast Historical Archaeology

The community of Ferryland, located on Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula, is home to the remains of George Calvert’s initial attempt at colonial settlement in North America. Over 25 years of excavations and research at the site have produced an increasingly detailed image of life in the seventeenth-century community there. As part of this ongoing work, the project discussed in this paper explores the use and provisioning of a detached kitchen which would have served Ferryland’s Mansion House. Built between 1621 and 1627, the structure makes up one half of a detached service wing adjacent to the Mansion House, fitting a pattern …

"From The Sea, Work": Investigating Historical French Landscapes And Lifeways At Anse À Bertrand, Saint-Pierre Et Miquelon, Meghann Livingston, Catherine Losier

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Given its history and changing role within the French salt-cod fishery, Saint-Pierre et Miquelon was essential for French colonial expansion throughout the Atlantic World. Saint-Pierre’s sheltered harbour paired with the archipelago’s proximity to the Grand Banks made these islands an ideal locale for carrying out shore-based activities associated with the salt-cod fishery. In this way, Saint-Pierre et Miquelon can be viewed not only as an integral component of the French presence within the greater region but also as a unique cultural landscape within its own right. With particular reference to Anse à Bertrand, a site located on the southeastern edge …

The Avalon Historic Petroglyphs Project: Investigating Historic Graffiti And Petroglyphs On Newfoundland’S Eastern Avalon Peninsula, Barry C. Gaulton, Bryn Tapper, Duncan Williams, Donna Teasdale

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula contains many examples of petroglyphs, historic graffiti and inscriptions/engravings dating from the 17th to 20th centuries. This paper highlights the sites of Kingman’s Cove (CfAf-25) and Brigus South (CgAf-21), the computational photography and conservation techniques used in their recording, and current interpretations on who made them, why, when, and what they represent. The results show the broad potential of historic inscriptions for understanding the movements of people who are often poorly represented in the documentary record, the importance of peripheral landscapes and features as foci for self-expression, place-making and remembrance, and the need for innovative methodologies to …

Smoldering Fire On The Mountain: The Wider Context Of The Battle Of Blair Mountain, Benjamin Grist Apr 2024

Smoldering Fire On The Mountain: The Wider Context Of The Battle Of Blair Mountain, Benjamin Grist

Liberty University Research Week

The Battle of Blair Mountain was the largest labor uprising in American history, and the climactic end to the West Virginia Coal Wars. Most modern scholars focus on the events in the year leading up to the battle. This is understandable, as a gunfight between a union-sympathizing sheriff and company-back detectives is a thrilling event to begin a book or journal article with and acts as a good starting point to explain year-long escalation that ended with the military being called in to put down the uprising. However, the West Virginia Coal Wars were not simply those events leading up …

Ireland And World War I: Why Irish Soldiers Fought, Thomas Gillmeister Apr 2024

Ireland And World War I: Why Irish Soldiers Fought, Thomas Gillmeister

Liberty University Research Week

This paper considers Ireland’s participation for the Allies in World War I. World War I quickly turned into a war of attrition and stagnation where one side simply tried to outlast the other. But eventually the Germans gave out, and the Treaty of Versailles ended the war. Ireland’s role in the war was complicated. Prior to the start of the war, England struggled with the Home Rule issue, which would give Ireland some autonomy. But the outbreak of World War I ended discussions on Home Rule, and Britain placed more emphasis on mobilization and winning the war. At first, most …

Meteorology Misconceptions Held By Students In An Earth Science Course For K-5 Teachers, Ivy Litton, Wilson Gonzalez-Espada, Jen O'Keefe, Md. Golam Kibria

2024 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations

Students hold misconceptions when they confidently believe certain information, but that information differs from the commonly accepted scientific consensus. 1 Misconceptions accumulate over time due to a combination of incorrect perceptions of everyday experiences, over-simplifications and over-generalizations found in textbooks and the media, and incorrect or incomplete diagrams and analogies.2-7 Clausen described misconceptions held by teachers, and how they affected student learning. 8 After observing several teachers teaching about weather and climate change, he concluded that personal beliefs and values impacted what parts of science they emphasized in the classroom, resulting in students learning the content differently and inconsistently. This …

Miocene Fungi From The Amazonas Region Of Peru: Preliminary Paleoclimatic And Paleoecological Reconstructions, Liberty F. Smallwood, Olivia Vander Espt, Christopher A. Marsh, Maggie E. Alden, Juan Filipe Montenegro, Diana Ochoa, Matthew J. Pound, Jennifer M. K. O’Keefe

2024 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations

Miocene sediments in the western Amazonas region record a unique mega-wetland ecosystem known as the Pebas System. This system existed under wetter and warmer than present conditions, prior to the final Andean uplift. Though the palynological record in the region has been studied extensively, fungal diversity remains poorly explored. Fungal remains from the Brazilian Amazonas have been identified to form-taxa only, without providing ecological or paleoclimatic information. We examine fossil-rich sediments from northeastern Peru that were deposited ca. 16.5 Ma, and therefore document the Miocene Climate Optimum warming. Here, the Fungi in a Warmer World (FIAWW) team applies the nearest …
