Interspecific Venom Variation Among Three Shades Of Aphonopelma Tarantulas: A. Gabeli, A. Hentzi, And A. Anax, Jorjia Elmore

Honors Theses

Phenotypic variation is a common occurrence throughout the animal kingdom and can occur both interspecifically and intraspecifically. Interspecific variation evolves in response to differential selection between species whereas intraspecific variation is commonly expressed as sex-based or population-based differences. Both interspecific and intraspecific phenotypic differences occur frequently in venomous species including arachnids, and can often result in differences in venom yield, potency, and protein. The North American tarantulas (Theraphosidae: Aphonopelma), include approximately 35 species and little is known about their venom. To test for interspecific and intraspecific venom variation, we collected individuals from three species and generated proteomic profiles and Illumina …

Peace, Power, And Precarity: Examining Brazil’S Potential As An Emerging Global And Regional Leader, Mackenzie A. Berwick May 2024

Peace, Power, And Precarity: Examining Brazil’S Potential As An Emerging Global And Regional Leader, Mackenzie A. Berwick

Gettysburg Social Sciences Review

Brazil is poised to emerge as a critical player in the Southern Hemisphere. The nation’s economic success has been accompanied by efforts to play a prominent role in international peace and security. This financial dynamism has offered the country a degree of legitimacy on issues of global trade and energy. However, a protracted social conflict in Rio De Janeiro’s favelas threatens that status. Brazil cannot access international esteem and influence without addressing its domestic situation. This paper applies Edward Azar’s protracted social conflict theory to reveal an internal state of disorder in Brazilian favelas that impairs the nation’s ability to …

Queering Storytelling: Challenging Normative Storytelling Methodology And Building A Queer Approach To Documentary Filmmaking, Ruben Schneiderman May 2024

Queering Storytelling: Challenging Normative Storytelling Methodology And Building A Queer Approach To Documentary Filmmaking, Ruben Schneiderman

Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Honors Projects

As representations of queer people on screen grow, so too has the violence for queer folks at the margins. This project looks at four documentaries that cover key moments in LGBTQ history to see how filmmaking methodologies and choices can further the harms of institutional violence. Key themes include homonormative and assimilationist representations in film, the formation of a reductive cultural memory of queer politics, and the obscuring of the global crises of AIDS. Through an analysis of these films, I argue for the formation of queer documentary methodologies that are grounded in the ideas put forward by queer theorists …

Mysticism As Spiritual Consciousness Of God’S Presence In Bernard Mcginn’S History Of Western Christian Mysticism, Michael Nguyen Phuoc Bao Dai Loi May 2024

Mysticism As Spiritual Consciousness Of God’S Presence In Bernard Mcginn’S History Of Western Christian Mysticism, Michael Nguyen Phuoc Bao Dai Loi

Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations

This thesis explores the concept of mysticism as a spiritual consciousness of God's presence, drawing on Bernard McGinn's multi-volume work, The Presence of God. Chapter One delves into McGinn's definition of mysticism, emphasizing "consciousness" over "experience" to capture the immediacy and ongoing nature of this awareness. It explores the themes of God's absent presence, mysticism as a process, and its role within religion and broader contexts. Chapter Two examines the roots of Christian mysticism in Jewish traditions, Greek philosophy, the life of Jesus, and early church practices. It then investigates the role of scripture, particularly through Origen's approach, and the …

Economic globalization’s key components include international trade, foreign direct investment (FDI), and the digital economy. FDI stimulates export growth, complementing international trade. The global economy is being transformed by digitalization, boosting international trade and GDP through speed, convenience, productivity, and transparency and driving shifts in FDI patterns through resource-efficient products and green technologies.

This dissertation investigates three prominent issues - the FDI inflows to fragile, least-developed countries (LDC), the proliferation of Free Trade Agreements (FTA,) and the digital economy. Using the Generalised Least Squares Random effects (GLS RE) and the Ordinary least squares (OLS) estimations with a sample size of …

Pre-Plinian Perplexity: Identifying And Constraining An Anomalous Pdc During The Initial Stages Of The May 18, 1980 Mt. St. Helens Eruption, Justin Crevier

Geosciences Undergraduate Theses

The Mount St. Helens (MSH) 18 May 1980 eruption was a formative event for a generation of volcanologists. With so much data available from detailed studies of the Blast and Plinian phases, MSH could aptly be called one of volcanology's greatest teachers—and the volcano may yet have more to teach us. The transition period, which occurred between the end of the Blast phase (0830) and the beginning of the Plinian phase (0920) on the morning of May 18, 1980, has not yet benefited from the same degree of comprehensive review as either of those phases. The conditions which caused the …

Gentile Foods: Rabbinic Prohibitions And The Fear Of Intermarriage, David Raab May 2024

Gentile Foods: Rabbinic Prohibitions And The Fear Of Intermarriage, David Raab

Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is a history of halakhah which looks to evidence from both within and outside of rabbinic literature to explain the provenance of a particular phenomenon. It suggests, contra traditional and academic understanding, that the original rationale behind the rabbinic prohibitions of eating Gentile bread and certain Gentile cooking was concern over the possible admixture of biblically impermissible ingredients, including idolatrous wine. It was only in Babylonia, possibly around the end of the amoraic period, that the rabbis added mišum ḥatnut, the fear of intermarriage, as the rationale for the prohibition of eating Gentile bread (but not cooking), thus …

Cross-Cultural Management In Dublin: An Analysis Of The Practices And Challenges Faced By Managerial Staff In Irish Businesses., Ayala Lopes Carneiro De Oliveira

MA in International Business

Cross-cultural studies are gaining increasing relevance in both academia and the corporate world (Arslan, 2001; Chrobot-Mason, et al., 2007; Molinsky, 2013; Meyer, 2014). Ireland, with its immigration policies and incentives for multinational companies, is attracting skilled individuals, leading to a growing diversity in the country. Local businesses frequently hire foreigners, enriching teams with diverse perspectives and creativity. According to the Irish Census (CSO, 2023), over 420,000 immigrants aged 15 and over were employed in Ireland in 2022, surpassing the number of employed Irish nationals.

Highly culturally diverse workplaces necessitate specific management practices to address challenges arising from cultural misunderstandings, unclear …

To Excavate An Absence, Margaret Compton May 2024

To Excavate An Absence, Margaret Compton

Graduate Theses

This thesis is an exploration of memory’s fluctuating aspects, utilizing natural materials and casting processes to create a sculptural body of work deeply rooted in materialized metaphor. Examining the relationship between mold and cast, part and whole, and interior and exterior, I utilize casting as a framework to understand the duality of remembering and forgetting. Memories, much like the natural landscape, are ephemeral, fading, and fracturing over time. Both external environments and internal mental landscapes share the common language of erosion, existing as present or absent, remembered or forgotten. Conestee Nature Preserve in Mauldin, South Carolina, serves as my “site” …

Ultraconserved Elements Based Phylogeny Of The New Zealand Mite Harvester Genus Rakaia, Zade Alafranji

Biology Honors Projects

New Zealand is home to a remarkable number of endemic taxa, some of which existed on the archipelago before the breakup of Gondwana. The mite harvesters (suborder Cyphophthalmi), tiny arachnids which dwell in forest leaf litter and caves, are one such group. The mite harvester family Pettalidae exhibits a classic Gondwanan distribution, informative for describing ancient patterns of diversification. Within New Zealand, there are three genera of pettalids; our research focuses on the phylogeny of the most widespread and diverse of these: Rakaia. Through phylogenetic analysis, we provide a window into patterns of ancient diversification and infer historical biogeographic trends. …

Identity And Contextual Theology In Late Twentieth Century Taiwan: A Study Of Huang Po-Ho’S Chhut-Thau-Thin Theology And Chow Lien-Hwa’S Chinese Indigenous Theology, Yu-Huei Huang

Yale Divinity School Theses

The historical context of twentieth-century East Asia led to divergent national identities among Taiwanese people, shaping the contextual and indigenous theologies developed by Taiwan-based theologians during the latter half of the century. These theologies were grounded in distinct historical narratives, inherited diverse theological visions, and employed varied motivations, goals, and methodologies. This thesis examines the theological contributions of Dr. Huang Po-ho (b. 1952) and Rev. Dr. Chow Lien-hwa (1920–2016), two key figures from Taiwan’s two major Protestant communities, to illuminate the theological landscape of late twentieth-century Taiwan. Huang’s Chhut-Thau-Thintheology reflects Shoki Coe’s emphasis on theological decolonization and C. …

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Air pollution is a crucial factor that affects both the environment and public health. Various methods are available for assessing air quality and pollution levels, such as regression models, principal component analysis, and factor analysis tools. However, some of these methods present issues in multicollinearity and the nature of collected data. It is important to recognize that air pollution data is often uncertain, incomplete, and contains limited valid data points. Weather conditions and economic activities are also factors that can affect air pollution. With growing communities in Kentucky (KY), it is essential to address these factors as the state has …

Framing Wildlife Conservation: Exploring Political Bias In States' Wildlife Action Plans, Ciara Nelson

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

Climate change affects regions of the United States differently due to factors such as the country's diverse physical landscapes, political environments, and population distributions. This variation leads to varying impacts on humans, wildlife, and ecosystems, with anthropogenic climate change—acknowledging humans as a significant contributor—being a point of contention, especially among some prominent politicians. The relationship between political party affiliation and climate change acknowledgment is evident, with recent political discourse highlighting differing views on the severity of climate change. This political framing influences how environmental policies are perceived and accepted, with the choice of language and framing playing a crucial role …

Opportunities For Urban Resilience To Climate Change: Understanding Local Climate Perceptions, Motivations, And Barriers To Green Infrastructure Use, Emmilene Berski

Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Global climate change poses a substantial threat to cities in the United States, particularly through increases in flooding and extreme heat. Cities must adapt to these threats to preserve their residents’ livelihoods and prevent economic loss. One adaptation strategy is the implementation of green infrastructure (GI). The opportunity for GI to foster urban resilience to climate change necessitates a deeper understanding of the extent to which cities utilize GI as a strategy for local climate change adaptation as well as perceptions and motivations surrounding the use of GI at a local level. I sought to address this need through a …
