Creating Whole Inclusive Worlds: The Impact Of Social Media Usage On Black Gender Expansive Millennials’ Experiences Of Social Support And Identity Development Processes, Meredith J. Holmes May 2024

Creating Whole Inclusive Worlds: The Impact Of Social Media Usage On Black Gender Expansive Millennials’ Experiences Of Social Support And Identity Development Processes, Meredith J. Holmes

Doctoral Dissertations

This qualitative study explored the processes of finding community and developing one’s own intersectional racial and gender identity through the social media (SM) experiences of 8 Black gender expansive (GE) adults located around the United States. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) methodology and an intersectional theoretical framework, the research questions guiding the study were: “What is the relationship between Black gender expansive people, social media, and community?” and “What is the relationship between Black gender expansive people, social media, and identity development?” The researcher’s findings from in-depth interviews with participants included three major themes: A) Positive Resilience-Supporting Experiences on SM, …

Locke’S “Wild Indian” In United States Supreme Court Jurisprudence, Anthony W. Hobert Phd May 2024

Locke’S “Wild Indian” In United States Supreme Court Jurisprudence, Anthony W. Hobert Phd

American Indian Law Journal

This article explores the impact of John Locke’s Two Treatises on United States Indigenous property rights jurisprudence. After discussing Locke’s arguments, the article turns to the rationales of the first and last cases of the Marshall Trilogy—Johnson v. McIntosh (1823) and Worcester v. Georgia (1832)—arguing that, contrary to prevailing political theory, Marshall’s opinion for the Court in Johnson puts forth a fundamentally Lockean justification for the dispossession of Indigenous property. This article also provides a brief analysis of Marshall’s explicit Vattelian rationale in Worcester, commentary on recent developments regarding the precedents, and recommendations for reconciling them within contemporary …

Rabies Management In The North, A One Health Problem In A Systems Theory Framework, Karsten Hueffer May 2024

Rabies Management In The North, A One Health Problem In A Systems Theory Framework, Karsten Hueffer

Arctic and Northern Studies

Rabies is a significant public health concern and is often described as the quintessential One Health problem, linking especially animal health to human health. I examine how rabies is managed in the circumpolar North with three cases: Alaska, Northwest Territories, and Svalbard. In this thesis, I describe rabies management in the North using a systems theory framework and explore challenges in this limited application of the One Health paradigm, focusing on animal and human health agencies and their interaction in rabies management in a northern environment. I conducted semi-structured interviews with fifteen key informants. My results indicate that most respondents …

Women And Water: An Art-Based Academic-Community Partnership, Martina Angela Caretta, Bethani Turley May 2024

Women And Water: An Art-Based Academic-Community Partnership, Martina Angela Caretta, Bethani Turley

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

Women constitute most volunteer water stewards in West Virginia. After having conducted participatory research on the motivations behind women’s engagement with water preservation and restoration work we carried out two participatory art-based activities. In this Practices and Curations, we reflect on these two art-based activities to facilitate networking between researchers and participants and to communicate to the wider public the role of women water stewards. Together with community partners we first organized an icebreaker for women to share a boundary object that signified their connection with water. These boundary objects were subsequently displayed in an art exhibit highlighting women’s connection …

The Avialan Fauna Of The Late Cretaceous Prince Creek Formation, Alaska, Lauren N. Wilson May 2024

The Avialan Fauna Of The Late Cretaceous Prince Creek Formation, Alaska, Lauren N. Wilson

Geosciences

Modern polar regions are critical breeding grounds for over 250 species of birds. Some migrate to high latitudes for access to seasonally abundant resources during reproductive periods, whereas others are year-round residents. Despite the major role these birds play in polar ecosystems, we know very little of the origins of the utilization of polar ecosystems for nesting due to the rarity of avialan fossils from high latitudes. The avialan fossil record spans 150 million years, yet evidence for high-latitude bird reproduction extends only to the Eocene La Meseta Formation of Antarctica (56-33.6 Ma). Here, we report a remarkable polar avifauna …

Land Use Intensification And Bio-Resource Utilisation In The South Pacific Islands, David Lopez Cornelio May 2024

Land Use Intensification And Bio-Resource Utilisation In The South Pacific Islands, David Lopez Cornelio

International Journal of Islands Research

The long and gradual colonisation of the Pacific islands created settlements of cohesive social networks that fused or were displaced by western ways of life, trade and governance through the centuries. In this paper, a historical review of the processes of island discovery, plants domestication, and of land use practices are discussed alongside the main socioeconomic drivers of land cover change. The native trees of the South Pacific constitute an invaluable resource for sustainable development; they were used and domesticated for thousands of years but logging, commercial agriculture, mining, the introduction of exotic species and urban expansion are threatening them …

The Life Of Edward J. Logue And The Rebuilding Of America's Cities After Wwii, Lizabeth Cohen May 2024

The Life Of Edward J. Logue And The Rebuilding Of America's Cities After Wwii, Lizabeth Cohen

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

Let's cut right to the chase: what's a social historian like me doing writing a biography of a dead white man named Edward J. Logue? I've never written a biography before. My two previous books, Making a New Deal and A Consumers' Republic, have made contributions to twentieth-century United States history by giving agency to social groups often considered powerless, such as industrial workers, first-generation immigrants, rank-and-file supporters of Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal, African American consumers, new suburbanites, and female consumer activists. I have made my reputation as a twentieth-century U.S. historian by arguing that ordinary Americans have been …

What Is Active Learning? Perspectives From Five Stem Professors’ Teaching Practices In Their Classrooms May 2024

What Is Active Learning? Perspectives From Five Stem Professors’ Teaching Practices In Their Classrooms

The Compass

This senior thesis investigated what ways, if any, STEM professors incorporated active learning pedagogy in their undergraduate classrooms at a small private university in the Northeast United States. STEM pedagogy was investigated because of the increasing popularity of active learning methods in the classroom compared to the didactic type of teaching that was prominent in the past.1 A qualitative case study of five STEM professors was conducted, involving the collection of data from biographical questions, an hourlong interview, and analysis of a document provided by a professor. This document could have been a lesson plan, an assignment, or an activity …

Lemons To Lemonade: Educational Modifications During The Covid-19 Pandemic And Their Utility Moving Forward, Ellis S. Logan, Brandon Atkins, Anne M. Price May 2024

Lemons To Lemonade: Educational Modifications During The Covid-19 Pandemic And Their Utility Moving Forward, Ellis S. Logan, Brandon Atkins, Anne M. Price

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated changes across social institutions, including education. This case study outlines specific innovations using five cases of pedagogical developments made by social science faculty members at a public university, and their utility for undergraduate students in a post-pandemic world. These innovations relate specifically to office hour scheduling, class assignment reminders, building informal class support groups, experiential learning, and virtual paper submission and evaluation. For each case, we outline the implementation procedure, evaluate its effectiveness, and discuss the benefits. We argue that these methods, forged during “challenging times”, will help improve students’ experiences and success during their time …

Immigration Policy Evaluation For Technology Professionals Immigrants In The United States, Angel Contreras Cruz May 2024

Immigration Policy Evaluation For Technology Professionals Immigrants In The United States, Angel Contreras Cruz

Dissertations and Theses

The U.S. Immigration System is complex for technology professionals seeking to relocate to the United States for employment or education. The United States relies on its employment-based immigration to attract and select the best talent to fill the shortage of skilled jobs. Technology professionals, a stream of highly skilled immigrants, tend to contribute and be more beneficial to the U.S. economy, which is one of the principles of U.S. immigration policies. Although U.S. immigration policies are constantly updating, policymakers, experts, and scholars suggest that the United States needs significant immigration reform to solve current issues, such as improving technological capabilities …

A Call For Afro & Indigenous Latinx Liberation! A Guidebook Re-Envisioning Critical Latinx Leadership Principles, Gaby Guzman May 2024

A Call For Afro & Indigenous Latinx Liberation! A Guidebook Re-Envisioning Critical Latinx Leadership Principles, Gaby Guzman

Master's Projects and Capstones

Latinx youth are critical leaders who need a framework that reflects the needs of the Latinx community and for all. Leadership development and capacity-building frameworks and programs for Latinx youth are limited in research and contain Latinidad problematics that have yet to be explored in leadership frameworks. Typically, these frameworks focus on building Latinx leaders' numbers in political spaces, achieving leadership positions in academic and non-academic spaces, and oriented toward promoting equitable opportunities for Latinx youth. It is vital that Latinx leadership frameworks begin to utilize a critical lens that supports the development of Latinx youth to be critical youth …

Addressing Barriers To Medication Adherence: An Evidence-Based Screening Instrument Validation Study, Donna Washburn May 2024

Addressing Barriers To Medication Adherence: An Evidence-Based Screening Instrument Validation Study, Donna Washburn

Dissertations

Adherence to a prescribed medication regimen is often critical to successful disease management. Cancer diagnoses often further complicate control of the comorbid diseases. Older cancer patients with multiple comorbidities receiving chemotherapy treatment are at increased risk for adverse health outcomes from uncontrolled disease when nonadherent to their medication regimen. The intent of this pilot study was to test the validity of an evidence-based screening instrument designed to identify patients at risk for medication nonadherence and uncontrolled illness. The W-BMA (Washburn-Barrier to Medication Adherence) screening criteria were applied to retrospective data of cancer patients with multiple co-morbidities. SPSS was used to …

The Experiences Of Alaska Native Students' Decision To Enter Nursing School: A Transcendental Phenomenological Study, Denise Michelle Gilliland May 2024

The Experiences Of Alaska Native Students' Decision To Enter Nursing School: A Transcendental Phenomenological Study, Denise Michelle Gilliland

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this transcendental phenomenology study was to examine the lived experiences of Alaska Native students’ decisions to enter nursing school, thus choosing nursing as a career. The increased recruitment of Alaska Natives into nursing is imperative. According to the research, a direct association exists between increasing the number of minority nurses and decreasing health inequities. Despite the demand, only a small number of Alaska Native students continue to enroll in nursing programs in Alaska. The theories guiding this study were Ryan and Deci’s self-determination theory and Lowe and Struthers’s theory of nursing in Native American culture. They provided …

Avoiding The Cliff: A Case Study Exploring A Community-Based Program Working With Young Adults With Disabilities, Jon Christopher Mckinnon May 2024

Avoiding The Cliff: A Case Study Exploring A Community-Based Program Working With Young Adults With Disabilities, Jon Christopher Mckinnon

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

When young adults with disabilities (YAWD) age out of the system, they face what has colloquially been termed “the cliff,” which symbolizes the sudden drop in services that occur as they transition out of high school; needs previously met at school are left unaddressed. Multiple options have been suggested to meet these needs, including employment, vocational rehab, sheltered workshops, supported employment, postsecondary education, and volunteering. Despite this, options for YAWD remain limited, especially when they have intellectual disabilities. The purpose of this intrinsic case study was to understand how Top Crops, a community-based program in Bowling Green, KY, helps meet …

Online Esl / Efl Instruction For Korean Children Under 7 Years Old: A Curricular Design, Seong Sun Kim

Master's Theses

Early bilingual education is currently implemented in many countries around the world. There has been much research on the effects of early second language learning on children's language development and school performance, and the results are positive.

Koreans focus on learning foreign languages to communicate with other people around the world and approach to lots of information and experience. For Koreans to become fluent English speakers, the best time to learn a foreign language is during early childhood. It is a critical period for mastering pronunciation and developing language skills, making it an ideal time to easily learn a foreign …

Expanding The Apostolic Mission: A Biblical-Theological Analysis Of Peter's Epistles As Evidence Of His Universal Apostleship Beyond The Jewish Context, Peter J. Ireland May 2024

Expanding The Apostolic Mission: A Biblical-Theological Analysis Of Peter's Epistles As Evidence Of His Universal Apostleship Beyond The Jewish Context, Peter J. Ireland

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Paul’s designation of Peter as the apostle to the Jews suggests that Peter’s mission was restricted and impacts the interpretation of his Epistles. Scholarly neglect of Peter and critical scholarship’s rejection of the Petrine Epistles’ authenticity result in the underutilization of the context of Peter’s complete life in the analysis of the Petrine Epistles. However, categorizing Peter as always being the apostle to the Jews does not fit the rest of the biblical evidence. Using a biblical-theological approach to the biblical texts supplemented by extrabiblical evidence to understand the biblical authors’ contexts while considering the passage of time, this dissertation …

When It Rains, It Pours: Weather Modification Law In The United States And A Proposal For Federal Control, Brendan Woodruff May 2024

When It Rains, It Pours: Weather Modification Law In The United States And A Proposal For Federal Control, Brendan Woodruff

Pace Environmental Law Review

Though weather modification has been used as a strategy to address issues such as drought throughout history, there continues to be a lack of federal regulation addressing weather modification. This Note surveys state regulations on weather modification and examines the current status of how the federal government addresses weather modification. Ultimately, this Note makes the case for why the Department of the Interior should take on the federal regulation of weather modification.

Deforestation In Brazil’S Amazon And The Effects On Its Position In International Politics, Jeb Hinkle May 2024

Deforestation In Brazil’S Amazon And The Effects On Its Position In International Politics, Jeb Hinkle

Helm's School of Government Conference - 2021-2024

Latin America is a land of potential for economic growth, the expansion of democracy, and international political influence. The United States has historically had political and economic influence in the region; however, Latin American nations have long seen the United States as imperialists, only serving their own interest at the expense of smaller Latin nations. As China’s global ambitions grow, many Latin American nations have turned towards the Chinese for investment and trade. The United States needs to combat China’s influence and the nations of Latin America wish to build a better future for themselves. The solution is strategic partnership …

The Right To Refuse To Deal, The Essential Facilities Doctrine, And The Digital Economy, George Sakkopoulos May 2024

The Right To Refuse To Deal, The Essential Facilities Doctrine, And The Digital Economy, George Sakkopoulos

St. Mary's Law Journal

Various commentators, as well as the 2020 report on competition in digital markets by the majority staff of the House Judiciary Committee, have advocated for the revival of the essential facilities doctrine, especially in the context of the digital economy. This Article examines the three phases in the development of the essential facilities doctrine and the right to refuse to deal—the foundations in the early twentieth century, the contraction of the right to refuse to deal and the expansion of the essential facilities doctrine in the mid-twentieth century, and the revival of the right to refuse to deal and the …

The Holocaust's Legacy: Influencing Jewish Political Identity, Jordan Eskew May 2024

The Holocaust's Legacy: Influencing Jewish Political Identity, Jordan Eskew

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis addresses the intricate relationship between the historical persecution of the Holocaust and its enduring influence on contemporary Jewish political engagement, a subject of significant contemporary relevance in political and international relations. Despite broad recognition of the Holocaust’s impact, the specific ways in which its memory affects Jewish political attitudes and actions around the world in the modern day have not been sufficiently thoroughly examined. Utilizing qualitative methods, including interviews with 20 individuals—public figures, Holocaust survivors, their descendants, and broader members of the Jewish diaspora— this study focuses on understanding the interplay between historical trauma, community cohesion, and the …

Inequality And Opportunity: Ranking Community Health In Florence County, Sc, Stephen Borders, Lauren Carter, Brandy Hayden, Mary Elizabeth Magyar

Public Health

Florence County is at the heart of the seven-county Pee Dee Region of South Carolina with a diverse population of about 136,000 residents. Home to McLeod Regional Medical Center and MUSC Health Florence Medical Center, the area boasts more than 750 licensed beds. Despite being home to world-class medical care, the county faces significant health challenges, including high rates of chronic diseases, such as diabetes and obesity, and a shortage of healthcare providers in certain areas. These challenges are exacerbated by the county's socio-economic disparities, with many low-income residents lacking access to basic health services. Our approach addresses these challenges …
