The relationship between cities and wetland cover varies across the globe, with some cities converting wetlands to low‐ and high‐density urban cover and others preserving, conserving, or restoring wetlands, or constructing new ones. However, the scientific literature lacks studies relating changes in systemic flood risk in an urban stormwater management systems to changes in wetland cover. Furthermore, whether and how such relationships are affected by changing storm intensity under climate change is unknown. We present a case study on the effects of changes in urban wetland extent and storm intensity on flooding in an urban drainage system in Valdivia, Chile, …

Between Memory And History: Irish Pubs As Sites Of Memory And Invention, Perry Share, Moonyoung Hong
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
The pub has been at the centre of Irish culture and identity for at least two centuries, has become a pillar of the Irish tourism “product,” and an export commodity as thousands of themed “Irish pubs” have been established across the world in the last number of decades, supplementing existing establishments that have served the global Irish community. This paper draws on key themes from the diverse material in our upcoming academic volume on the Irish pub, to be published by Cork University Press, later in 2024. The book brings together contributions from scholars of history, sociology, design, literature, culinary …
Latin American Participation In The Current Process Of Economic Globalization, Sullivan D. Padgett
Latin American Participation In The Current Process Of Economic Globalization, Sullivan D. Padgett
Journal of Global Awareness
From World War II to the present, Latin America has participated in the current process of economic globalization to varying degrees. The Washington Consensus of the late twentieth century supplanted the region’s earlier model of state-led development and increased its participation in the global capitalist regime. However, Latin America has shown minimal participation in the current process of economic globalization since the late 2000s and, instead, espouses regionalization. Nevertheless, regionalization has proven to be an arduous undertaking in Latin America, especially with China’s increasing regional influence. Variations of benefits are discussed, and recommendations are offered. While the future of Latin …

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing
Summer 1963: Roger Hilsman's plane pierced the clouds to reveal the Plaines des Jarres, a flat area strewn with the remains of age-old rock jars. The plains below showed signs of the batterings of war: slit trenches, bunkers, and a network of roads. The weather was dry and arid, and the terrain resembled a ghost town in the American West more than the "land of a million elephants"-an allusion to the tremendous war machine of a medieval Lao king.

A Historiographical Look At The New Soviet Woman, Liberty Sproat
The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing
Prior to 1917, the character of the ideal woman throughout Russian history was that of wife and mother. This cultural image for women had been upheld by centuries of legislation and tradition. During and immediately after the Bolshevik Revolution, though, the relegation of women to the home began to be considered bourgeois. Consequently, from the revolutionary era to the rise of Stalinism, the Soviets sought to drastically transform gender roles in Russia. Establishing equality between economic classes, the Bolsheviks believed, would likewise establish equality between genders. Thus, they began to promote a new image of Soviet womanhood. The New Soviet …

All Dese Years Of Busy Livin': A Case Study Of Freedwomen In Athens, Georgia, Hollijane Dailey Litchfield
The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing
A bright-eyed little girl about the age of four or five, dressed adorably in a lacy dress with matching shoes, carried a basket of fruit as she circled the crowded dining-room breakfast table. "Anna, Anna," they called out as she cheerfully brought the basket to each person who requested fruit. Her small hands could not yet perform the laborious tasks required of a house servant but still, she was working, doing her small yet important part. Though what she was doing may seem like a minor task, it symbolized the fact that Anna, despite her young age, was a slave, …

The Logic Of Toleration: Pierre Bayle' S Christianity And Religious Tolerance, Michael J. Walker
The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing
In 1598, after the pronouncement of the Edict of Nantes by French king Henry lV, some French Catholics obeyed the edict and afforded religious tolerance to Huguenots (French Protestants} in parts of France. For the most part, ruling elites tolerated small Protestant communities that did not challenge their authority. However, as the seventeenth century progressed, issues of religious tolerance, concord and persecution became increasingly pertinent. Catholic communities often ignored many of the concessions afforded to religious minonttes by the Edict. Protestants throughout Europe had experienced varying degrees of tolerance and persecution during the sixteenth century, but by the seventeenth century …
The Revival Of Heritage Beers: The Case Of Farmhouse Beers From Northern Europe, Clark Danderson
The Revival Of Heritage Beers: The Case Of Farmhouse Beers From Northern Europe, Clark Danderson
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
As the craft beer revolution continues to grow, both commercial brewers and homebrewers have shown considerable interest in rediscovering the beer of the past. Many of these beer styles faced near extinction due to various factors. Some involve changes to brewing, such as the industrialization of the brewing process, the widespread availability of pure commercial yeast cultures, and the popularity of closed fermentation in cylindroconical fermentors. Other societal factors include changes in consumer preference, generational shifts, and urbanization. Lastly, environmental factors, such as climate change and pollution, present persistent challenges. The beer styles that were most endangered often held a …
Caesar’S Cervisia, Travis Rupp
Caesar’S Cervisia, Travis Rupp
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Examinations of Roman cuisine often downplay the role of beer in the ancient Roman diet seeing it as a symbol of barbarity. This essay examines the plausibility of beer as a standard component of the Roman soldier’s diet and seeks to highlight when it may have become necessary for military advancement. Julius Caesar’s reliance on auxiliary forces to campaign in the North from 58-51 BCE ensured that cultures known for producing beer influenced legionary forces reliant on local resources to survive. This essay also asserts the implausibility of wine consumption amongst Caesar’s men and concludes that the acceptance of beer …

Minority Cuisines Of İstanbul And Their Contribution To Formation Of İstanbul Cuisine, Banu Özden
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Cuisine offers various lenses through which to analyse culture and how identities and experiences are shaped within and between communities that coexist in the same city. Istanbul is a unique city that has been home to countless cultures throughout history and served as the capital of three empires. This rich historical background has given rise to a cosmopolitan culinary culture. The Ottoman Empire played a significant role in shaping the local culinary culture, which was further enriched by the interaction and cultural exchange of the societies that lived together under its auspices. Alongside the food traditions of Muslim Ottomans, Istanbul's …
The Challenging Food Regionality In Lower Silesia: Between Nostalgia And Innovation, Mariusz Rybak
The Challenging Food Regionality In Lower Silesia: Between Nostalgia And Innovation, Mariusz Rybak
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Lower Silesia, Poland, is a region that experienced almost a total change of population after 1945. Often described as a region of uprooted people and without its own identity and traditions, the regionality of its food presents in fact a particular phenomenon of transplanted and re-invented traditions. Foods declared regional culinary heritage or traditions in the last few decades are mostly either those brought by the ancestors of today's Lower Silesians who migrated here, or traditions related to the place, re-created and carried on even without the population in which they originally evolved. Accordingly, regionality is defined by social or …

The Elusive Endonym, Thomas Eccardt
The Elusive Endonym, Thomas Eccardt
Publications and Research
The term ‘exonym’ was coined in 1957 by Marcel Aurousseau, an Australian geographer, to denote a place name used in a non-native language. ‘Endonym’ was later coined analogously as its counterpart, meaning the native name for a place. An example exonym would be the English word Germany, referring to the country whose inhabitants know it as its endonym Deutschland. These terms are useful to cartographers and also the United Nations, since it publishes documents in its six official languages, referring to places all over the world.
The topic of endonyms and exonyms would seem to fall into the …

Farmer's Adaptive Capacity And Adoption Of Strategies To Climate Change Among Mountain Communities In Nepal, Tanvir Hossain
LSU Master's Theses
Climate change presents significant challenges to agriculture worldwide, particularly where farming is central to livelihoods. This phenomenon has been linked to decreasing crop yields due to rising temperatures and reduced rainfall, particularly affecting low-income countries with limited adaptive capabilities. Grasping how farmers perceive climate change is essential for developing effective adaptation strategies to lessen its adverse impacts. This study concentrated on investigating the perceptions and adaptive strategies employed by smallholder farmers in Nepal's Mustang district, utilizing primary data sources. Data from 131 randomly selected households were gathered through structured interviews, while focus group discussions provided qualitative insights into farmers' views …

A Tri-State Study Of Middle School Teachers’ Perceptions Of Generation Alpha Students: Are Middle Schools Ready For “Generation Glass?”, John A. Huss, Shannon Eastep
i.e.: inquiry in education
The passage to middle school has been identified as a confusing period for young adolescents involving a series of major transitions. A new variable that now permeates these already lofty transitions is the firm entrenchment of Generation Alpha in the middle grades classroom. “Gen Alpha” includes anyone born from 2010 onward, making them the first generation who will be entirely born and shaped in the 21st century. The purpose of this study was to explore the attitudes and perceptions of current middle school teachers across Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio toward their Gen Alpha students so as to uncover the concrete …

Prison Bars & Bird Cages: Conducting An Arts-Based Participatory Research Project With Undergraduate Women In Stem, Batsheva Guy, Tziporah Feldman
i.e.: inquiry in education
The ‘chilly’ STEM climate in undergraduate settings has been widely documented, as women in STEM majors frequently face discrimination, microaggressions, and implicit bias from their professors and peers. While undergraduate research opportunities can help women in STEM overcome some of the barriers they face, these opportunities are not always accessible and inclusive. Although there is a breadth of literature on this topic, many studies utilize traditional quantitative and qualitative methods and do not take the authentic, individualized voices of these women into account. The present study integrates two arts-based, participatory methodologies-- Photovoice and Collage Inquiry-- in order to explore the …

Tourism villages significantly contribute to regional development by boosting economic growth, preserving culture, and enhancing community engagement. The Widosari Tourism Village, a nominee in the Top 50 Indonesian Tourism Village Award 2022, experienced a surge in website traffic but lacked the infrastructure to effectively service this demand, negatively impacting tour package sales. This descriptive qualitative study assesses the impact of a website redesign according to modern design principles. Results show that the redesign substantially improved the delivery of information, facilitated communication between managers and tourists, and enhanced the website's functionality in supporting tourism activities. Specifically, the redesigned website led to …

A Rising Tide That Lifts All Boats: Long-Term Effects Of The Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend On Poverty, Matthew Berman
A Rising Tide That Lifts All Boats: Long-Term Effects Of The Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend On Poverty, Matthew Berman
ISER Articles
Although not designed as a social program to redistribute income, the Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD) has been reducing poverty by providing equal annual payments to nearly all state residents for over 40 years. We examine direct effects of the PFD on Alaska poverty rates since 1990, using US Census and American Community Survey Public Use Microdata Sample records to adjust for under-reporting of children's PFD income in official statistics. We estimate that the PFD reduced the number of Alaskans with incomes below the US poverty threshold by 20%–40%. We measure only a small effect on income distribution: a 0.02 …

Carbon Sequestration In Peatlands: Using Environmental Proxies To Understand The Impact Of A Changing Climate On Global Carbon Storage, Sarah Schuller, Don Sullivan
DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive
Peatlands are a type of terrestrial wetland ecosystem in which consistently waterlogged conditions prevent the decomposition of organic matter. These conditions allow for sequestered carbon in plant matter to remain stored in the soil to such a great degree that peatlands store more carbon than all other vegetation types in the world combined. By inhibiting decomposition, the composition of water-rich peat soil remains representative of the environmental conditions during the period in which the peat was formed. The collected peat samples can then be utilized as environmental proxies to determine historical temperature, moisture, and carbon content and extrapolated to predict …
