Higher Education And Ableism: Experiences Of Disabled Students’ In England During The Covid-19 Pandemic – Stepping Into Inclusion, Suanne Gibson, Zeta Brown, Jen Shute, Mette Westander

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

This paper details the persistent and continuous struggles disabled students experience studying in HE, and how these were exaggerated during the Covid-19 pandemic (DSUK, 2020). We critically consider progress made by Widening Participation and related equality policy, determining that higher education (HE) continues to be an ableist system and space because inclusion is not understood, nor prioritised, at either strategic or practitioner levels. Furthermore, orthodox pathological positions on disability continue and are re-created via hegemony, ignorance, and fear (Madriaga, 2007; Gibson, 2020). Attempts at practices for the inclusion and equality of disabled students take place within the constraints of other …

A Systematic Literature Review Exploring How The Diversity Of National Cultures Impact The Transformation Success In Organisations, Mark Searing, A.Omar Portillo-Dominguez Jun 2024

A Systematic Literature Review Exploring How The Diversity Of National Cultures Impact The Transformation Success In Organisations, Mark Searing, A.Omar Portillo-Dominguez

Other

The purpose of this study is to investigate current academic thinking regarding how cultural differences impact transformation success. It analyses cultural dimensions and other factors and how they correlate to project management. Using SCOPUS as a search engine, peer-reviewed academic papers from the period 2019-2023 were analysed as part of a systematic literature review. Results were gathered and grouped into themes as well as cultural dimensions for in-deep analysis and discussion. The results of this study found consensus on the negative impact of cultural diversity on project outcomes, but a significantly lower level of agreement with respect to the specifics …

Towards Understanding The Post-Colonial In The Development Of Irish Economics, Joseph K. Fitzgerald Dr., Brendan K. O'Rourke Jun 2024

Towards Understanding The Post-Colonial In The Development Of Irish Economics, Joseph K. Fitzgerald Dr., Brendan K. O'Rourke

Conference Papers

This conference contribution is prompted by recent work where theories used to understand the economists in countries like France, Britain, Germany, and the USA (Fourcade, 2009; Maesse, 2015) were used to study the development of Irish economics profession. Work on Ireland (FitzGerald & O’Rourke, 2023), though using these frameworks, revealed the importance of Ireland’s colonial and post-colonial experiences in the social status of economics in today’s Ireland. Escobar (2011) points to the power of economists in development discourses focussing particularly on the case of Columbia and the interaction between USA economics with its southern neighbours in the period since the …

Analysis Of Rural Broadband Adoption Dynamics: A Theory-Driven Agent-Based Model, Ankit Agarwal, Casey Canfield Jun 2024

Analysis Of Rural Broadband Adoption Dynamics: A Theory-Driven Agent-Based Model, Ankit Agarwal, Casey Canfield

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Demand for broadband internet has far outpaced its availability. In addition, the "new normal" imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic has further disadvantaged unserved and underserved areas. To address this challenge, federal and state agencies are funding internet service providers (ISPs) to deploy broadband infrastructure in these areas. To support goals to provide broadband service to as many people as possible as quickly as possible, policymakers and ISPs may benefit from better tools to predict take rates and formulate effective strategies to increase the adoption of high-speed internet. However, there is typically insufficient data available to understand consumer attitudes. We propose …

Diversity, Distribution, And Determinants Of Bacterial Communities In Arctic Soil, Amna Khaleefa Alhemeiri Jun 2024

Diversity, Distribution, And Determinants Of Bacterial Communities In Arctic Soil, Amna Khaleefa Alhemeiri

Theses

Arctic soils host diverse bacterial communities crucial for ecosystem functioning and nutrient cycling. Understanding the factors shaping their diversity and distribution is essential to assess ecosystem responses to climate warming. This study aimed to assess and compare bacterial diversity and community structure between high- and sub-arctic ecosystems and explore the environmental and climatic factors determining their distribution. We collected 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequence data from 999 samples of high- and sub-arctic soils. All the data was pre-processed and quality-controlled using a similar bioinformatics methodology, followed by statistical analyses including alpha and beta diversity assessments, and volatility analysis using QIIME2. …

Produced Water Management From Production Sites In The State Of Kuwait, Feras Adel Alsalem Jun 2024

Produced Water Management From Production Sites In The State Of Kuwait, Feras Adel Alsalem

Dissertations

Extraction of crude oil also produces large volumes of water, termed produced water (PW). PW is by far the most significant by-product in the process of extracting hydrocarbons from the subsurface. Consequently, managing PW has become a great concern to oil and gas producers. The increasing amounts of PW and more stringent environmental and safety regulations in regard to PW make more efficient treatment methods necessary, where sustainable long-term solutions for PW management need to be provided. The focus of this study is on PW from onshore operations as the majority of the oil and gas extraction operations (upstream processes) …

This is a protocol for a Cochrane Review (intervention). The objectives are as follows: This systematic review will synthesize the available evaluation research on the effectiveness of street outreach conflict mediation programs. The review seeks to answer the following primary question: Are street outreach worker strategies that use conflict mediation and/or violence interruption strategies effective at reducing violence? Assuming a sufficient number of eligible studies, this review will also address two additional questions: Are there certain program elements that render these strategies more or less effective? Are there certain conditions under which these strategies are more or less effective? As …

Case Study - A Comparative Analysis Of Two Different Wastewater Treatment Plants, James Duckett Jun 2024

Case Study - A Comparative Analysis Of Two Different Wastewater Treatment Plants, James Duckett

Construction Management

This case study compares two different wastewater treatment plants and analyzes the different characteristics, including strengths and weaknesses of both. The first plant being addressed is the Stockton Regional Wastewater Controls Facility (RWCF), and the second plant studied is the Morro Bay Water Reclamation Facility. These facilities are both quite new at the time of this paper, though they are both very different in size and geographical location, as one is on top of a hill, and one is in the middle of a valley. The Stockton RWCF is currently under construction, nearing completion at the time of this paper, …

Comparing Erwartung And Die Glückliche Hand Through The Female Gaze, Angela Tinio Jun 2024

Comparing Erwartung And Die Glückliche Hand Through The Female Gaze, Angela Tinio

University Honors Theses

During the early 20th century, the rise of psychoanalysis impacted society by offering a revolutionary approach to the mind. This rise occurred due to the work of the work of Sigmund Freud (1856-1939), who believed many mental disorders were rooted in the subconscious. Psychoanalysis revolutionized how we approach the brain and offered a new perspective on patient treatment. Artists in the early 20th century also explored and insisted on new ways to view society through art. Schoenberg and Freud were both pioneers in their field of work, and Freud even inspired Schoenberg's early atonal music. Freud may have …

Economic Impacts Of Industry Shifts: Evaluating The Decline Of The Coal Industry In Indonesia's Transition To Renewable Energy, Sebastian Ming Lopez Jun 2024

Economic Impacts Of Industry Shifts: Evaluating The Decline Of The Coal Industry In Indonesia's Transition To Renewable Energy, Sebastian Ming Lopez

University Honors Theses

Worldwide usage of coal in energy production is declining. Agreements on carbon reduction and decreasing reliance on non-renewable energy systems are occurring at differing rates. Developed countries are quick to adapt and switch to renewable energy systems using their greater resources, technological advances, and government support. Developing countries however are at a disadvantage due to a lack of resources and prior investments in older, polluting, technology. This study aims to look at the potential effects of the decline of the coal industry within Indonesia, a fast-growing developing country that relies heavily on its coal sector. Indonesia as a country is …

Remediating History: A Review Of Restoration For Creeks Polluted From Historical Mining Sites, With The Red Boy Mine As A Primary Case Study, Kara Atiyeh

University Honors Theses

I conducted a literature review to examine the key aspects of restoring watersheds affected by pollution from historical mining. This review is then applied to a case study discussion of the Red Boy Mine and Clear Creek remediation project in Granite, Oregon. The goal of this discussion is to explore how an analysis of site conditions along with current literature on management practices can help guide these projects. Thousands of abandoned hard rock mines remain throughout the country, and many pose serious environmental health effects. Heavy metals like cadmium, nickel, and copper are brought to the surface from mining activity, …

More than 16 million Americans living with cognitive impairment warrant a diagnostic evaluation to determine the cause of this disorder. The recent availability of disease-modifying therapies for Alzheimer's disease (AD) is expected to significantly drive demand for such diagnostic testing. Accurate, accessible, and affordable methods are needed. Blood biomarkers (BBMs) offer advantages over usual care amyloid positron emission tomography (PET) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers in these regards. This study used a budget impact model to assess the economic utility of the PrecivityAD

Transportation Access And Social Inclusion In College Students, Chasity Phillips, Allison Davis, Oliver Rahn, Kerstyn Rader May 2024

Transportation Access And Social Inclusion In College Students, Chasity Phillips, Allison Davis, Oliver Rahn, Kerstyn Rader

UTC Spring Research and Arts Conference

The prevalence of social isolation in the United States is rising due to such disparate causes as COVID-19, increases in the cost of living, and the introduction of new technologies (Kannan & Veazie, 2023). Although experiencing social support and inclusion during the college years contributes importantly to young adults’ feeling valued, loved, and belonging to a community (Arslan et al, 2018), young adults in college are reported to be one of the highest-risk populations for depression, social isolation, and mental health issues (Elliott, 2021). The nationwide Healthy Minds Survey found that two-thirds of nearly 33,000 students surveyed at schools around …

Designing An Effective Motivational Climate: Effects On Students’ Effort And Achievement, Margaret Ellis, Brett D. Jones, Fei Gu, Hande Fenerci

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

We present a case study that demonstrates how instructors can intentionally design a positive motivational climate in online and hybrid courses. We also examine the extent to which students’ perceptions of the motivational climate predict their effort and achievement across three different modalities (face-to-face [FTF], online, and hybrid) of the same course. We surveyed students in an undergraduate computer science course once a semester for three consecutive years (FTF in Year 1, online in Year 2, and hybrid in Year 3). Measures included motivation-related scales and final course grades. Our findings, based on survey responses from 981 students, demonstrate that …

Practice What We Preach?: A Review Of Journal Publishing Practices Related To Reflective Writing In Sotl, Laura Cruz, Eileen Grodziak, Hillary H. Steiner, Laura Cruz

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) scholars have long advocated for the inclusion of reflective writing as a legitimate form of scholarship. That said, for those instructors seeking to publish their reflective work, especially scholarly personal narratives (SPNs), there are persistent gaps between the aspirations of the field and the realities of scholarly publishing. The present study seeks to illuminate that gap through a systematic analysis of the policies and practices of academic journals as they pertain to the publication of reflective writing in SoTL. The ultimate aim of the study is to enable editors to close the gap between …

Morphometric Analysis And Taxonomic Re-Evaluation Of Pepsis Cerberus Lucas And P. Elegans Lepeletier (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae: Pepsinae: Pepsini), Frank E. Kurczewski, Akira Shimizu, Diane H. Kiernan May 2024

Morphometric Analysis And Taxonomic Re-Evaluation Of Pepsis Cerberus Lucas And P. Elegans Lepeletier (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae: Pepsinae: Pepsini), Frank E. Kurczewski, Akira Shimizu, Diane H. Kiernan

Insecta Mundi

Hurd (1952) separated Pepsis cerberus Lucas from P. elegans Lepeletier (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae: Pepsinae: Pepsini) based on external morphology and biogeography. Vardy (2005) synonymized the familiar and historically well-documented P. cerberus and P. elegans, combining these Nearctic taxa with several Neotropical variants in an extremely broad definition of P. menechma Lepeletier. In doing so, Vardy (2005) breached the principle of nomenclatural stability. He ignored the prevailing usage and clearly violated articles 23.2, 23.3 and 23.9.1.2 of the ICZN (1999). Morphological differences, ecological divergence, and narrow sympatric geographic distribution of P. cerberus and P. elegans …

Taxonomic Notes On Velvet Ants Of The Genus Timulla Ashmead, 1899 (Hymenoptera: Mutillidae) In The United States Of America And Canada, George C. Waldren

Insecta Mundi

The exclusively New World velvet ant genus Timulla Ashmead, 1899 (Hymenoptera: Mutillidae: Mutillinae: Trogaspidiini) contains 180 species and ten subspecies. Most of these species are known from a single sex, and the validity of the subspecies has not been evaluated since their original description in 1937 and 1938. The Timulla fauna of the United States of America includes thirty species and eight subspecies, and the fauna of Canada includes three species. The faunas of these two countries were critically studied with the following results. Out of the eight total subspecies, seven were found to be structurally identical to and sympatric …

Women’S Routes: Gender, Mobility, And Knowledge Among The Makushi Of Southern Guyana, Lisa Katharina Grund May 2024

Women’S Routes: Gender, Mobility, And Knowledge Among The Makushi Of Southern Guyana, Lisa Katharina Grund

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

Exploring the journeys of some Makushi women, this article highlights the relevance of gender in the question of (im)mobility and female engagements with the world as central to contemporary Makushi life. Departing from the understanding that the category of space has proven crucial in the theoretical groundwork of the Guiana ethnographic area and drawing on the region’s classical ethnographies, it explores everyday practices of movement of the Makushi people who live along the triple frontier of southern Guyana. Rather than disruptive, these in and out journeys—collective or individual—prove to be crucial to the weaving of community. They are also central …

Replication And Growth In Cassava Cultivation And Uxorilocal Women’S Relations Among The Waiwai: A Mother's Reckoning With Death And Social Change, Laura H. Mentore May 2024

Replication And Growth In Cassava Cultivation And Uxorilocal Women’S Relations Among The Waiwai: A Mother's Reckoning With Death And Social Change, Laura H. Mentore

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

Through an ethnographic examination of the shared capacities of cassava and womanhood for what I term growth and replication, I argue that Waiwai sociality seeks to curtail the trajectory of life towards finite death through the intervening act of cutting and replanting or replicating life in a vegetatively inspired form of the “episodic present” (Strathern 2021). An extended vignette demonstrates how these features of Waiwai sociality take shape in mother-daughter and sister relations at the core of uxorilocal residential living, and in a senior woman’s reckonings with illness, death, and social change.

Propagating Conviviality: Waiwai Cultural Transformation Of Moral Depravity, George F. Mentore May 2024

Propagating Conviviality: Waiwai Cultural Transformation Of Moral Depravity, George F. Mentore

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

This essay considers the problematics of anthropological translations when its responsibility to the codes of its modernist subjectivity persuades us to defer judgment on interpretations made of indigenous semiotics of life. It begins with this full disclosure before attempting to describe, from a translation of a Waiwai myth, how one can produce a guilty reading about their privileging of concern for conviviality. The Waiwai bodily feeling of well-being must be in place before relations of trust can be enacted. Transforming the vial aggressive feelings of strangers becomes a priority for hosting them. Maintaining feelings of conviviality within the community is …

Kita Vai À Kwamalasamutu, Fabio Ribeiro May 2024

Kita Vai À Kwamalasamutu, Fabio Ribeiro

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

“The Hero Of My Own Life”: The Purpose Of The Fictional Self In The Life Writings Of Mary Wollstonecraft And Charles Dickens, Jessica M. Day May 2024

“The Hero Of My Own Life”: The Purpose Of The Fictional Self In The Life Writings Of Mary Wollstonecraft And Charles Dickens, Jessica M. Day

Honors Projects

This paper looks at Letters written in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark by Mary Wollstonecraft and David Copperfield by Charles Dickens as significant texts that combine fiction and life writing. Looking at fictional and autobiographical elements within each text, this paper argues that these authors manipulate genre to make significant claims about feminism and child activism. They participate in self-crafting—taking the self, something that is personal, and making it public and political. This paper argues that fiction allows the life writer to expand past the limitations of a single lifetime and speak to truths larger than the self. Letters written …

Beyond Black And White Spatial Imaginaries: A Case Study Of The Model Cities Area In St. Louis, Missouri, Clark Randall May 2024

Beyond Black And White Spatial Imaginaries: A Case Study Of The Model Cities Area In St. Louis, Missouri, Clark Randall

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Building on, and departing from, George Lipsitz’ theory of white and Black spatial imaginaries, this article analyzes how race-based spatial imaginaries took form in the urban planning politics of 1960’s St. Louis. Specifically, the era of Model Cities funding from 1966-1972 is evaluated as a case study of competing spatial imaginaries for the cities’ future involving the majority Black neighborhoods of the near north side and the preexisting white planning establishment. A part of Lyndon B. Johnson’s Great Society, Model Cities sought to usher in a new framework for citizen planning, putting residents and their local knowledge at the head …
