River City Blues: The Quest For Municipal Home Rule & Economic Security In St. Louis, Josef Wibbenmeyer Sep 2024

River City Blues: The Quest For Municipal Home Rule & Economic Security In St. Louis, Josef Wibbenmeyer

Undergraduate Research Symposium

The Great Divorce in St. Louis, the separation of the City and County of St. Louis in 1876 is one of the most impactful events in the region’s history. Most people will think of the Great Divorce in simple terms like "The County didn't like the City." or "The City didn't want to pay tax money that went to the County alone." Few, however, go further and ask why. Why didn't the City want to pay taxes to the County? The answer is economics. I found in my research compelling evidence that the City leadership believed that the municipal relationship …

Zaufanie Społeczne A Uwarunkowania Psychologiczne Atrakcyjności Oferty Sektora Fintech Wśród Klientów Indywidualnych Banków, Krzysztof Świerszczak

internetowy Kwartalnik Antymonopolowy i Regulacyjny (internet Quarterly on Antitrust and Regulation)

Latest research shows that social trust has ceased to be an element of the competitive advantage of banks over enterprises that use innovation in the process of providing financial services. Moreover, consumers trust companies belonging to the FinTech (Financial/Technology) sector to a greater extent than banks. In this context, the determinants of consumer decisions, in particular psychological ones, should be analyzed. These are individualized in the context of each choice made by the consumer, and in the face of the observed comparable level of consumer trust in FinTech entities and banks. They may indicate significant differences in the perception of …

No. 05: Pandemic Precarity And Food Insecurity Among Zimbabwean Migrants In South Africa, Godfrey Tawodzera, Jonathan Crush Sep 2024

No. 05: Pandemic Precarity And Food Insecurity Among Zimbabwean Migrants In South Africa, Godfrey Tawodzera, Jonathan Crush

Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network

This policy brief highlights the profound impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Zimbabwean migrants living in South Africa, with a particular focus on food insecurity and economic precarity. The pandemic exacerbated existing vulnerabilities within the migrant community, many of whom rely on informal, low-wage labour sectors for their livelihoods. The survey conducted in 2021 among Zimbabwean migrants revealed widespread unemployment, drastic income reductions, and severe food insecurity, primarily driven by pandemic-related restrictions and the resultant economic contraction. Zimbabwean migrants, a significant proportion of whom work in South Africa’s informal economy, were disproportionately affected by the lockdowns and mobility restrictions. The …

Palaeoenvironment And Bio-Events Of The Cretaceous Sediments Of The Cauvery Basin, India, R. Venkatachalapathy, L. Harini, M. B. Hart, Watkinson M. P. Sep 2024

Palaeoenvironment And Bio-Events Of The Cretaceous Sediments Of The Cauvery Basin, India, R. Venkatachalapathy, L. Harini, M. B. Hart, Watkinson M. P.

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The Cauvery Basin is an important rift margin basin on the east coast of India. It's long research history began in the mid-nineteenth century with the pioneering work of H.F. Blanford. While much of the Cretaceous succession in the basin is fault-controlled, some of the recorded events represent global sea level changes, especially in the mid-Cretaceous. Macrofossils (ammonites, bivalves, etc.) and foraminifera are abundant throughout, and there is an important occurrence of fossil wood and ‘log-grounds’ in the Turonian-Coniacian. The basin is sub-divided into a series of sub-basins (known as depressions in the earlier literature) which - in places - …

Enhancing Human Well-Being Through Cognitive And Affective Pathways Linking Landscape Sensation To Cultural Ecosystem Services, Yashi Wu, Lina Tang, Chang‑Bing Huang, Guofan Shao, Jundong Hou, Clive E. Sabel Sep 2024

Enhancing Human Well-Being Through Cognitive And Affective Pathways Linking Landscape Sensation To Cultural Ecosystem Services, Yashi Wu, Lina Tang, Chang‑Bing Huang, Guofan Shao, Jundong Hou, Clive E. Sabel

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Context: Landscape sensation is essential for the delivery of cultural ecosystem services (CESs), yet the pathways through which these services are delivered remain inadequately understood. Exploring how people obtain CESs from landscapes facilitates better understanding of the tradeoffs and synergies between ecosystem services and landscape sustainability. Objectives: This study aimed to elucidate the sensory pathways that links landscape attributes to CESs, focusing on the roles of cognitive and affective experiences. Methods: We analyzed social media comments for the measurement scale of cognition. We employed partial least squares structural equation modeling to integrate sensation, cognition, affect, and satisfaction, using questionnaire data …
