A Native American Free Press: The Opportunities And Threats To Press Freedom In Indian Country, Bryan Pollard Dec 2024

A Native American Free Press: The Opportunities And Threats To Press Freedom In Indian Country, Bryan Pollard

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Tribal media – media outlets often operated by a tribe for a Native audience – are an indispensable public service to their communities. They are relied upon for news and information about current events and governmental actions, and often reinforce cultural and community values. These outlets are often financially subsidized by the tribal government if the operation is too small or geographically remote to generate the revenue necessary for financial independence. Herein lies a central dilemma: Can tribal media, under the influence of tribal governments, serve as an independent voice free of political interference and capable of fair and truthful …

Carbon Dioxide Dynamics In The Carbonate Critical Zone, Savoy Experimental Watershed, Arkansas, Usa, Michael Darvin Jones Dec 2024

Carbon Dioxide Dynamics In The Carbonate Critical Zone, Savoy Experimental Watershed, Arkansas, Usa, Michael Darvin Jones

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The dynamics of carbon dioxide (CO2) within the Earth’s critical zone (CZ) are essential for driving spatial and temporal variations of carbonate dissolution and precipitation, which are fundamental to subsurface porosity and permeability development. However, there is still a significant knowledge gap regarding the patterns of CO2 transport and production within the carbonate critical zone (CCZ). In this study, we investigated these dynamics within a mantled karst terrain at the Savoy Experimental Watershed (SEW) in Northwest Arkansas.

Previous monitoring of partial pressure of CO2 (PCO2) and dissolution rates at karst springs in …

Take A Ballot: Can Transnational Theatre Foster Political Efficacy In Women Of Color?, Breanna Marie Bailey Dec 2024

Take A Ballot: Can Transnational Theatre Foster Political Efficacy In Women Of Color?, Breanna Marie Bailey

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This research examines whether transnational theatre fosters political efficacy in women of color. Research shows the history of disenfranchisement of women of color; even today, upper-class, white males have the greatest access to civic resources– including access to theatre–which ignite their political efficacy in the United States. The gap in research surrounds how, and if, transnational theatre can affect women of color’s political efficacy. By analyzing theatre’s role in engaging political efficacy, I offer an avenue to build a more equitable and democratic society. Using a case study analysis of two female playwrights from opposite sides of the U.S. border–Sor …

Analyzing The Effects Of Cloud Seeding On Hail Suppression During The North Dakota Cloud Modification Project, Lynnlee Storm Rosolino

Theses and Dissertations

This study assesses the effectiveness of cloud seeding for hail suppression as part of the North Dakota Cloud Modification Project. Using a radar-based hail size retrieval algorithm, storm data from 2016-2018 were analyzed to compare observed hail sizes with forecasted values from atmospheric models and indices. Algorithm output is compared with model proximity sounding analysis including two hail-centric indices, five severe weather indices, and HAILCAST output to determine the forecasted hail size. Results show that the majority of unseeded cases have matching forecasted and observed hailstone diameter. In contrast, in seeded storms, observed hail sizes were consistently smaller than forecasted. …

Modeling Hourly Storm Surges Using Deep Learning Techniques, Md Abu Zafor Dec 2024

Modeling Hourly Storm Surges Using Deep Learning Techniques, Md Abu Zafor

Master's Theses

Storm surges cause coastal flooding, one of the most devastating coastal hazards. Accurate modeling of storm surges is essential for predicting and mitigating these impacts. Traditional approaches model surges at individual tide gauges and often focus on daily time scales, leading to data redundancy and limiting their ability to capture sub-daily variability. This study addresses these limitations using deep learning (DL) algorithms to model hourly surges simultaneously at multiple tide gauges along the U.S. East Coast and Gulf of Mexico. Three algorithms, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and a hybrid ConvLSTM are employed to model surges using …

Burgeoning global trade and colonial policies promoted transformations in land use and agriculture throughout tropical regions in the 19th and 20th centuries, but the local and regional ecological consequences of landscape changes are still being identified and analysed. The Philippine Archipelago, which experienced successive colonial regimes across more than 7100 islands, exemplifies the multiplicity of ecological outcomes produced by these transformations. To better characterise diverse landscape change, we use colonial censuses and datasets to assess land use, production and agricultural yields in the Philippines during the late Spanish and early U.S. colonial periods (ca. 1870–1925). Our novel digital, quantitative analysis …

Impact Of The 2020 Covid-19 Lockdown On The Concentration Of Non-Methane Volatile Organic Compounds In A Uk Urban Atmosphere, Emmanuel Bernard, Rebecca L. Cordell, Robert S. Blake, Michael J. Wilde, Paul S. Monks Dec 2024

Impact Of The 2020 Covid-19 Lockdown On The Concentration Of Non-Methane Volatile Organic Compounds In A Uk Urban Atmosphere, Emmanuel Bernard, Rebecca L. Cordell, Robert S. Blake, Michael J. Wilde, Paul S. Monks

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The changes in air quality brought about by the COVID-19 lockdowns can provide valuable insight into how longer-term reductions in emissions might affect atmospheric composition. In urban Leicester UK, the 2020 COVID “lockdown” brought about several notable changes in atmospheric composition, including a considerable decrease (20–60%) in concentrations of non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs). Given their varied emission sources and lifetimes, NMVOC data can give valuable insights into how behavioural change impact atmospheric composition. The total concentration of 48 NMVOCs at roadside (RS) sites decreased from a pre-lockdown (sampled 16th-24th March 2020) concentration of 181.3 ± 41.4 μg/m3 to …

Higher Abundance Of Disturbance-Favoured Trees And Shrubs In European Temperate Woodlands Prior To The Late-Quaternary Extinction Of Megafauna, Elena A. Pearce, Florence Mazier, Ralph Fyfe, Charles W. Davison, Signe Normand, Maria Antonia Serge, Paolo Scussolini, Jens Christian Svenning

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Large herbivorous mammals strongly influence vegetation structure by creating and maintaining open areas and causing disturbance within closed woody habitats. The herbivores alive today in Europe are only a small remnant of the large species that existed in high diversity and abundance before modern humans. The extinction of so many large herbivores during the last 50,000 years, and the loss of megaherbivores (body weight ≥1000 kg) from most of the continent before the Pleistocene–Holocene transition, is likely to have had cascading effects on vegetation structure and composition. To evaluate these effects within the European temperate forest biome, we examine the …

Global Survey Of Paleo-Bedforms On Mars, Matthew Chojnacki, Lori K. Fenton, Lauren A. Edgar, Mackenzie Day, Christopher S. Edwards, Aaron R. Weintraub, Amber L. Gullikson, Matt W. Telfer

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Sedimentary processes on Mars have contributed to a plethora of landforms, both ancient and modern. Many of these are aeolian- or fluvial-formed constructs that meet the morphologic criteria for dunes and ripples but are clearly lithified and part of the rock record. This study conducted a survey of Mars using data returned from the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) to characterize the spatial distribution, origin, and geologic context of these preserved ancient bedforms, termed here as paleo-bedforms. The most compelling class include organized groups of 2–80-m-tall, crescentic to transverse features spaced at 100–1000 m wavelengths at Apollinaris Sulci, Valles …

Deconstructing Contemporary Disposable Vapes: A Material And Elemental Analysis, Andrew Turner, John W. Scott, Thomas Backshall-Kennedy, Maya C. Dabrowski Dec 2024

Deconstructing Contemporary Disposable Vapes: A Material And Elemental Analysis, Andrew Turner, John W. Scott, Thomas Backshall-Kennedy, Maya C. Dabrowski

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Disposable e-cigarettes (vapes) are becoming increasingly popular but there are concerns about their impacts on human health, the environment and resource sustainability. A better understanding of these impacts and potential solutions requires characterisation and quantification of the materials and chemicals used in their construction. In the present study we dismantle nine types of popular, single-use vapes and analyse the components by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry and pyrolysis-gas chromatography mass spectrometry. The median dry mass of vapes was about 50 g, and the main material contribution was either plastic (up to about 80 %) or metal (up to about 85 %, and …

Environmental Transport And Sorting Of Glass Retroreflective Microbeads And Their Potential As Proxies For Road Marking Paints, Andrew Turner, Adam Bridgwater, Emily Marshall Dec 2024

Environmental Transport And Sorting Of Glass Retroreflective Microbeads And Their Potential As Proxies For Road Marking Paints, Andrew Turner, Adam Bridgwater, Emily Marshall

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Road marking paints are a potentially important contributor to the global microplastic pool but very little reliable information is available on their erosion or environmental distributions. As potential carriers of or proxies for road paints, we determine the concentrations and sorting of retroreflective glass microbeads in marking materials and in fractionated (< 5 mm) local dusts, soils and sediments. As an aid to our investigation, we also determine the concentrations of metals of geochemical significance or components of road paint pigments in markings and geosolids. Concentrations of beads up to 92,800 kg−1 were observed in street dusts, with a median diameter (350 μm) greater than that in road marking samples (270 μm). Few beads were found in adjacent (< 5 m) or more remote soils (six beads in ten 50-g samples) and none were detected in replicates of a sample of roof dust, suggesting that aeolian transport is limited. Concentrations up to 3700 kg−1 were found in estuarine sediments close to bridges or stormwater runoff effluents, and with increasing sediment depth concentrations and …

Wartime Encounter With Geography., C. Nicholas Raphael Nov 2024

Wartime Encounter With Geography., C. Nicholas Raphael

The Geographical Bulletin

Every once in a while a book comes along that I cannot put down once I first pick it up to inspect it to see if it is worthy of my time. I obtained Wartime Encounter With Geography based upon my respect for Professor de Blij and because it seemed it might well be interesting. It arrived right in the middle of the semester, just when I did not have the time for (what I thought would be) recreational reading . I did, however, think I had a few minutes to take what I thought would be a quick scan …

Contemporary Regulatory Policy By M. Eisner, J. Worsham, And E. Ringquist: Lynne Rienner, C. Nicholas Raphael

The Geographical Bulletin

In Contemporary Regulatory Policy, Eisner, Worsham, and Ringquist provide the novice and seasoned student of regulatory policy with an innovative and in- tegrative perspective on the sometimes 'wonk-ish' world of policy analysis. Using jargon sparingly, a predictable organization template for each chapter, an accessible, and at times irreverent, writing style, the book examines the multifaceted public policy process, in general and government regulation, specifically. Through the construction of several substantively and conceptually different case studies, the book examines the evolution of U.S. regulatory legislation. From the early industry-specific controls to the establishment of wider society-wide programs, the authors demonstrate the …

Between Africa And The Abyss: Globalization, Media, And The Invisibility Of A Continent, Julie A. Silva, Elvin K. Wyly

The Geographical Bulletin

Mass communication, perception, and mental maps are pervasive themes in human geography. Yet the role of globalization on our collective mental maps remains poorly understood, raising critical questions of theory and policy as flows of capital, people, and ideas continue to blur the boundaries between local and international events. This paper analyzes these themes in the context of subSaharan Africa, focusing specifically on the civil war in Sierra Leone. The nature of armed conflict in Africa has evolved considerably in recent decades, and the globalization of Western media has altered the way the region has been portrayed. As publishers, editors, …

Canola In Prairie Canada: Its Development As A Regional Crop And Its Challenge To Wheat, Thomas A. Rumney

The Geographical Bulletin

Canola (Brassica napus), a variety of rapeseed used for edible vegetable oils, animal feed, and industrial oil products, is a relatively new addition to the repertoire of crops grown by farmers in the Canadian Prairies. Becoming common only after approximately 1960. Canadian canola production has been concentrated in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, and has become a serious rival to wheat in terms of acreage and production levels. This paper examines the growth and development of this regional agricultural phenomenon from the poi nt of view of its location and distributional characteristics.

Projections And Perceptions-Editorial Comment: Geography's Future: Professional Or Academic?, Reginald G. Galledge Nov 2024

Projections And Perceptions-Editorial Comment: Geography's Future: Professional Or Academic?, Reginald G. Galledge

The Geographical Bulletin

The 21st century brings to the fore the age-old arguments about the functions of colleges and universities. The University as the host for scholarly thinking and activities has dominated in most countries. But the late 20th century saw an increased demand for professional training. Some faculties continued to develop along both fronts (e.g., medicine, law) where research was indeed an important component, but where training of practitioners was, at some places, even more important. Other areas focused more on training, and developed " professional schools" where related academics were combined with technical or other training programs to " certify" practitioners. …

Activity Spaces Of Dwarfs: Research Via The Internet, Robert J. Kruse, Ii Nov 2024

Activity Spaces Of Dwarfs: Research Via The Internet, Robert J. Kruse, Ii

The Geographical Bulletin

Literature devoted to the concept of activity space occupies an important place in the field of human geography. Researchers have found that spatial experience is affected by characteristics such as race, gender, handicaps and social stigma. However, absent from this literature is an examination of the activity spaces of dwarfs. Dwarfism raises important geographical questions regarding the social constructs and physical constraints faced by individuals of extremely short stature. For this project, questionnaires were posted on an Internet listserver for dwarfs. People who identified themselves as dwarfs responded to a variety of questions about the physical and social aspects of …
