Project Tackle 12 Years Of Cia And Taiwanese Joint Reconnaissance Overflights, Maximilian Digiovanni Jan 2025

Project Tackle 12 Years Of Cia And Taiwanese Joint Reconnaissance Overflights, Maximilian Digiovanni

Honors Theses and Capstones

Project TACKLE was a joint collaborative project between the CIA and the Taiwanese government to facilitate U-2 spy plane missions flown by Taiwanese pilots over China. These missions, conducted from 1962 to 1974, provide critical insights regarding the US and Taiwan’s fluctuating relationship during this period. TACKLE missions played a crucial role in informing policymakers on a variety of subjects, such as the progress of China’s rapidly evolving nuclear weapons program. This paper situates the TACKLE missions within the broader political context of their time to highlight the constant prioritization challenge that plagued the program.

Spatial Implications Of Potential Treeline Campfire Restrictions In Selected Usfs-Managed Colorado Wildernesses, Rebecca Hippensteel Jan 2025

Spatial Implications Of Potential Treeline Campfire Restrictions In Selected Usfs-Managed Colorado Wildernesses, Rebecca Hippensteel

Masters Projects

High-elevation ecosystems in Colorado’s Wilderness areas are ecologically sensitive and particularly vulnerable to campfire impacts, which can damage vegetation, alter soil chemistry, and degrade wilderness character. This study presents a preliminary proof of concept evaluating the spatial implications of banning campfires at or above 11,000 feet—used here as a proxy for treeline—in twelve U.S. Forest Service-managed Wilderness areas. Using 30-meter resolution Digital Elevation Models from the USGS National Map and Earth Explorer, a raster-based analysis in ArcGIS Pro identified and quantified acreage above 11,000 feet. Across the twelve Wilderness areas, 268,601 acres were found to lie above treeline, representing an …

The Politics Of (Mis)Perception: Understanding Americans’ Beliefs About Immigrant Welfare Usage, Ping Xu, Belinda Davis, Michael Henderson, James Garand Jan 2025

The Politics Of (Mis)Perception: Understanding Americans’ Beliefs About Immigrant Welfare Usage, Ping Xu, Belinda Davis, Michael Henderson, James Garand

Political Science Faculty Publications

Background

Public concerns about immigrants' use of welfare programs have long influenced U.S. immigration and social policy. During the Trump administration, claims that immigrants exploit the American welfare system became central to the political agenda, amplifying perceptions that immigrants are economic burdens. These perceptions, whether grounded in reality or not, can shape public support for both immigration and the welfare state.

Aims

Few studies have systematically examined how closely Americans' perceptions of immigrants' welfare usage align with actual usage patterns, and how individual and contextual factors moderate this relationship. In this study we explore these connections.

Materials and Methods

We …

Slava Ukraini! Solving Ukraine’S Present With The Past, Daniel Armes Jan 2025

Slava Ukraini! Solving Ukraine’S Present With The Past, Daniel Armes

Journal of Strategic Security

Ukraine desires to be a free state, drawing on over one thousand years of history to legitimize a national identity consisting of a distinct culture, language, and religion. While this is an achievable goal, the country faces challenges based on competing claims to Ukraine’s historical legacy. This article will analyze the roots of the current conflict over Ukraine’s national identity beginning with the religious divide between Eastern and Western Christianity in the Great Schism of 1054 and the Rus diaspora caused by the Mongol invasion of eastern Europe in 1240. A millennium of history and conflict are relevant today because …

Mapping Horizon Limits Using Topographical Reference Points For Determining Pre-Columbian Circum-Caribbean Indigenous Interisland Contact Routes, Al M. Rocca Jan 2025

Mapping Horizon Limits Using Topographical Reference Points For Determining Pre-Columbian Circum-Caribbean Indigenous Interisland Contact Routes, Al M. Rocca

SSGS Faculty Publications and Presentations

Existing archaeological studies have suggested an extensive network of ongoing human travel operated between the Bahamas, the Greater Antilles, and the Lesser Antilles before and at the time of European contact in 1492. Additional evidence prompts some scholars to propose expanded contact of these areas with Mesoamerica, the rest of Central America, the northern coast of South America, and the Florida peninsula, resulting in an interconnected circum-Caribbean region. A variety of economic, political, and social influences stimulated this desire for sea and ocean movement, including migration, trading, tribute, raiding, and social connectedness. Geographic and oceanographic factors such as distance between …

Destroy, Rebuild, Repeat: How To Break The Climate Disaster Cycle, Mark P. Nevitt Jan 2025

Destroy, Rebuild, Repeat: How To Break The Climate Disaster Cycle, Mark P. Nevitt

Faculty Articles

Climate change is fundamentally reshaping how we live, where we live, and whether we invest in or retreat from climate-exposed communities—but climate and disaster law is not changing with the climate. This legal latency is driven by antiquated statutes, doctrines, and policies that have not kept pace with the climate moment. Ex ante adaptation decisions governing where to live are life and death choices that shape ex post disaster response. Laws and policies should facilitate sound climate decisionmaking, but too often they frustrate individual and governmental decisions on whether to stay or retreat. In this Article, I argue that laws …

Vice Capital, Andrew K. Jennings, Kimberly D. Krawiec Jan 2025

Vice Capital, Andrew K. Jennings, Kimberly D. Krawiec

Faculty Articles

Academic and market interest in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investing has grown markedly in recent years. Although less prominent, a substantial literature also explores whether “sin pays” in the public capital markets. This literature’s underlying theory is that social norms discourage the funding of businesses that promote vice. According to this theory, some investors—particularly institutions sensitive to social norms, such as pension funds and foundations—will shun vice investments. A consequence of this aversion is a “vice premium” for those investors who will invest in such companies. Largely unexplored, however, is what industries or business models qualify as “vice,” how …

Motivations And Experiences Of Thai Fans In Attending K-Pop Hybrid Concerts, Phavaran Wonglek

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The rise of hybrid concerts, combining live performances with online streaming, has transformed how global K-pop fans engage with performances. While offering flexibility and broad accessibility, this format raises concerns about replicating the emotional and social richness of offline events. This study investigates the motivations, experiences, satisfaction, and future intentions of Thai fans attending K-pop hybrid concerts via live streaming. It adopts the Uses and Gratifications Theory (UGT) and Expectation Confirmation Theory (ECT) as its framework. Data were collected from 401 respondents using a questionnaire and analyzed through descriptive statistics. Findings show that emotional motivations were the main drivers, with …

Cinematic Architecture: Perceiving The Real From The Reel In How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies Film Setting, Edbert Theo Fortino Jan 2025

Cinematic Architecture: Perceiving The Real From The Reel In How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies Film Setting, Edbert Theo Fortino

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Cinematic architecture is a multidisciplinary approach that examines the relationship between film and architecture. This thesis explores how film offers a unique way to immerse audiences in spatial experience. Through time, movement, and visual framing, film can dramatize or reinterpret space according to the director’s vision, making it a valuable medium for understanding how architecture is perceived, used, and felt. Film also visualizes fragments of real everyday life, cultural practices, and spatial behaviour. Observing how characters inhabit and interact with spaces reveals how real users interpret the functional and symbolic meanings of architecture—insights often overlooked when architects rely solely on …

Design Concepts Of Sun Shading Devices For Office Buildings, Designed By Intaren In Bangkok, Thailand, 1969-1974, Aung Kaung Myat

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Tropical modernism in Bangkok in the 1970s synthesized modern architectural principles with the demands of Thailand’s hot and humid climate. Various design approaches focusing on deterring the tropical sun were incorporated into the building design. In doing so, sun shading played a major role in climatic responsiveness in tropical environments. Within tropical modernism, numerous buildings with climate-responsive features have been designed by local and foreign architects, with Intaren Architects & Engineers being one of them. Studying the shading devices of office buildings designed by this firm between 1969 and 1974 in Bangkok, Thailand, this research explores the concept and philosophy …

Investigating The Spatiality Of Sites Of Youth Āddā (Informal Social Hangout) In Changing Urban Landscape: A Study Of Rajshahi, Bangladesh, Md Samiul Sabbir Islam

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Recent urban transformation in the Global South, driven by globalization, commodification, and a logic of development, is producing homogenized cities and increasingly regulated public spaces. Within this context, the Bengali practice of adda (āddā), understood as prolonged informal, convivial conversation, embodies a form of non-instrumental sociability that resists commodification and control. Although a historically and cultural rooted practice, scholarly attention to adda has been limited. The spatial dimensions of adda, the characteristics of its sites, or how changing urban conditions influence the practice, especially among youth remain under-explored. This study investigates the spatiality of youth adda in the rapidly transforming …

Curating Difficult Heritage : Interpreting The Thai-Burma Railway In The Museum Context, Eriko Kawaguchi

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This study examines how the difficult heritage of the Thai–Burma Railway is curated and interpreted in Kanchanaburi, Thailand. As debates in contemporary museology evolve, museums are increasingly expected to function as inclusive platforms with social responsibility. Although the railway was constructed in Thailand, its traumatic memories are shared transnationally among Allied prisoners of war (POWs), Asian laborers, Japanese imperial military, and local Thai communities, making its representation complex. The research aims to understand how difficult heritage is curated through a case study of the Thailand–Burma Railway Centre (TBRC), focusing on its curatorial approach, challenges, and representation of transnational narratives. Qualitative methods …

Healing Communities With Police Divestment: Seeking Abolition Through Transformative Reform And Community-Government Collaboration, Jessica E. Gillson Jan 2025

Healing Communities With Police Divestment: Seeking Abolition Through Transformative Reform And Community-Government Collaboration, Jessica E. Gillson

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Concerns about the efficacy and sustainability of the U.S. carceral system have persisted throughout the country’s history, recently fueling renewed activism and bipartisan calls for reform. However, proposed solutions remain divisive. This thesis first defines the current status of our prison systems, then explores collaborative alternatives to incarceration and policing that support communities and break cycles of incarceration.

Focusing on partnerships among local governments, community organizations, justice-involved individuals, and law enforcement, this study examines holistic approaches to crime prevention, reentry, and reintegration. Using an interdisciplinary framework incorporating restorative justice, community resilience, and systems theory, it investigates how community-based strategies can …

Renewable Energy Federalism 2.0, Danielle Stokes Jan 2025

Renewable Energy Federalism 2.0, Danielle Stokes

Law Faculty Publications

Much like climate change, the clean energy transition presents a “super wicked” problem that is further complicated by prioritizing justice. History has taught us that government regulation, industry innovation, and community engagement are the catalysts of effective transitions. Similarly, the just energy transition requires the support of these interconnected networks. This Essay offers sustainable collaborative governance as a theoretical framework through which decision-makers may filter their assessments, industry can model its metrics, and community can develop language to articulate its needs. Sustainable collaborative governance is also a means of navigating the complexities of renewable energy siting and regulation while fostering …

Infectious disease plays a key role in shaping marine communities, including in seagrass meadows, which form biodiverse coastal habitats. Eelgrass (Zostera marina) is the most widespread seagrass species and is susceptible to seagrass wasting disease, caused by the protist Labyrinthula zosterae. As a foundation species, eelgrass strongly influences ecosystem structure, function and services; recent work has begun to explore the links between critical community interactions and seagrass wasting disease. Here, we highlight recent advances about how the eelgrass community regulates and responds to seagrass wasting disease, from the microbiome to herbivores and filter feeders. We further show …

Into The Legal “Twilight Zone”: State Tenth Amendment Jurisdiction Displacing Climate Supremacy, Steven Ferrey

Lewis & Clark Law Review

The Supremacy Clause of the Constitution notwithstanding, western states have utilized their reserved Tenth Amendment Constitutional authority, upheld by federal circuit courts, arbitrarily to block their adjacent states’ sustainable infrastructure to address climate change. The Biden Administration set in motion a rapid electrification of the entire U.S. economy via three different new laws enacted sequentially in 2021, 2022, and 2023. A re-directed federal executive branch now oversees these programs and laws. This Article analyzes how each of those three laws suffers from a critical omission plaguing this most significant infrastructure program in the last half century—now forecast counter-intuitively by some …
