High-Resolution Geospatial Database: National Criteria-Air-Pollutant Concentrations In The Contiguous U.S., 2016–2020, Tianjun Lu, Sun-Young Kim, Julian D. Marshall
Epidemiology and Environmental Health Faculty Publications
Concentration estimates for ambient air pollution are used widely in fields such as environmental epidemiology, health impact assessment, urban planning, environmental equity and sustainability. This study builds on previous efforts by developing an updated high-resolution geospatial database of population-weighted annual-average concentrations for six criteria air pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, CO, NO2, SO2, O3) across the contiguous U.S. during a five-year period (2016–2020). We developed Land Use Regression (LUR) models within a partial-least-squares–universal kriging framework by incorporating several land use, geospatial and satellite–based predictor variables. The LUR models were validated using conventional …
Impact Of Geography On Institutions In Agricultural And Nomadic Societies, Haiwen Zhou
Impact Of Geography On Institutions In Agricultural And Nomadic Societies, Haiwen Zhou
Economics Faculty Publications
How geography affects the choice of institutions is studied in a theoretical model. In this model, nations are located around a circle. Rulers compete through choosing tax rates, the level of military spending, and the degree of formality of institutions. Geographic condition is captured by population density. It is shown that societies with higher population densities choose lower tax rates, establish more formal institutions, and give government officials lower levels of autonomies than those with lower population densities do. A higher level of external threats induces a ruler to choose a higher level of autonomy for officials. The model is …
The Paradox Of Survival: Gendered Food Insecurity, Labor Inequalities, And Coping Strategies During The 2023/4 Drought In Eastern Ethiopia, Meron E. Lemma
The Paradox Of Survival: Gendered Food Insecurity, Labor Inequalities, And Coping Strategies During The 2023/4 Drought In Eastern Ethiopia, Meron E. Lemma
Theses and Dissertations--Geography
In drought-prone regions of Eastern Ethiopia, recurring droughts profoundly reshape everyday life in ways that deepen existing gendered inequalities. Drawing on fieldwork conducted in Fedis district, including semi-structured interviews with women, project implementers, and government officials, as well as group discussions with community members, this study explores how women experience, navigate, and resist the gendered impacts of drought. By attending to the sociopolitical dynamics of drought and the development interventions that accompany it, I analyze how these forces restructure labor, land, food systems, and authority in ways that reproduce and exacerbate existing inequalities. Women’s coping strategies, ranging from begging and …
Commercial Attention Spaces: A Century Of Discourses, Measurements, And Models Of Attention In The Construction Of U.S. Advertising Markets, Jacob Saindon
Theses and Dissertations--Geography
A vast assemblage of networked devices populate our everyday spaces. Concomitant with the increasing ubiquity of media devices are advertisements. Indeed, many networked devices, specifically the “free-to-use” software applications, websites, or platforms displayed through them, are advertising-dependent. An assortment of firms within the commercial media industry—brands, agencies, publishers, vendors—work in concert to sustain a market for advertising. The core operation of the commercial media industry, I argue, is the production and exchange of attention as an economic object. In this study, I approach the production of attention and the framing of its markets as spatial processes. The continued growth of …
Movement Public Health: Addressing The Links Between Public Health And Carceral Systems, Marie Fatima Hyacinthe
Movement Public Health: Addressing The Links Between Public Health And Carceral Systems, Marie Fatima Hyacinthe
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
This dissertation is an interdisciplinary exploration of the links between public health and carceral systems, the connections between academic scholarship and advocacy, and the role of public health research in social justice movements. This dissertation begins with in-depth interviews with academic researchers and anti-carceral organizers, as well as analyses of my own experiences taking part in protests and mutual aid work, which ground conversations on the meaning of safety and care, and the role of public health. The second chapter is a systematic literature review and synthesis where I analyze academic literature about public health and carceral systems, assessing it …
Valuing Cheap: Constructing, Consuming, And Contesting The Dollar Store Economy, Frances Evelyn Barrett
Valuing Cheap: Constructing, Consuming, And Contesting The Dollar Store Economy, Frances Evelyn Barrett
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
In Valuing Cheap, Barrett traces the histories of Dollar General, Family Dollar, and Dollar Tree from the firms’ twentieth century origins in three distinct southern locales into corporate behemoths with more stores than McDonald’s or Walmart. Valuing Cheap provides an important chapter of the late twentieth century history of racial capitalism, detailing how dollar stores at once “served” local communities while capitalizing on existing spatialized, racialized, classed, and gendered inequalities. This history illuminates the interwovenness of business, consumer, and labor histories, emphasizing the fundamental entanglements of power, material and cultural production, and consumption. The dollar store industry’s cheap goods, low-wage …
Outside The Workshop: Alternative Spaces Of U.S. Printmaking, 1935–1977, Michelle Donnelly
Outside The Workshop: Alternative Spaces Of U.S. Printmaking, 1935–1977, Michelle Donnelly
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
The studio, the land, the camp, and the home are vital locations of print production. Yet scholars have overwhelmingly focused on prints made in the workshop, or an institutional facility stocked with specialized equipment and overseen by “master printers.” This dissertation investigates how women artists and artists of color expanded the parameters of printmaking outside the traditional site of the workshop from 1935 to 1977 in the United States. Each spatially organized chapter centers on one artist: David Hammons, Sari Dienes, Matsusaburo “George” Hibi, and Ruth Asawa. All four artists practiced what I call emplaced printmaking: an engagement with the …
Advancing Neuroimaging Brain-Behavior Machine Learning Biomarkers, Brendan Adkinson
Advancing Neuroimaging Brain-Behavior Machine Learning Biomarkers, Brendan Adkinson
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Machine learning models trained on human neuroimaging data are increasingly used as tools for predicting individual behavioral phenotypes and enhancing precision medicine. However, multiple limitations hinder their current scientific and future clinical utility. In this dissertation, I address key challenges surrounding "brain-behavior" predictive model interpretability, generalization, and bias. In Chapters 2 and 3, I show that prevalent feature selection practices overlook features that are meaningful for both prediction and neurobiological interpretation. This suggests that prevailing approaches lead to feature overinterpretation and a misrepresentation of the neurobiological bases of brain-behavior associations. In Chapters 4 and 5, I demonstrate that brain-behavior predictions …
Two Paradigms Of Research And Their Influence On The Study Of Animal Behaviour, David Fraser
Two Paradigms Of Research And Their Influence On The Study Of Animal Behaviour, David Fraser
General - Animal Cognition and Behavior
Taxonomist Roy Crowson identified a fundamental difference among sciences. What he called “natural history” is exemplified by classical biology; it begins by observing, describing and classifying phenomena in the real world, then seeks patterns and concepts that help to synthesize and explain the observations, and proceeds to measurement and experimentation grounded in that framework. What he called “natural philosophy” is exemplified by classical physics; it postulates fundamental principles or concepts that are thought to apply universally, and the research proceeds more directly to measurement and experimentation directed at these principles or concepts. The study of animal behaviour has been influenced …
Description’S Displacements: Writing Experience In Musil, Benjamin, And Bachmann, Aida Feng
Description’S Displacements: Writing Experience In Musil, Benjamin, And Bachmann, Aida Feng
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
This dissertation unfolds the ways in which description emerged as an active site for reconfiguring human experience in the writing experiments of the 20th century. Description, as a procedure for presenting and arranging the phenomena of reality, typically constructs an epistemological realm of experience that progresses toward comprehension and internal consistency. Understood in this way, description mediates one kind of experiential reality while foreclosing others. This project enlarges description’s operative capabilities toward a presentational mode that does not merely re-describe the phenomenal objects in this reality. To do so, it foregrounds writers and thinkers who conversed directly with philosophical traditions …
Aligning Water And Carbon Goals In Sustainable Transitions To Clean Energy, Yan Du
Aligning Water And Carbon Goals In Sustainable Transitions To Clean Energy, Yan Du
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
As the global energy sector transitions toward cleaner and more sustainable sources, understanding the interdependencies between energy production and water resources becomes increasingly critical. Water is an essential input across a wide range of energy technologies – both conventional and renewable – impacting not only power generation efficiency but also broader dimensions of environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and resource equity. These interdependencies are central to the water-energy nexus, where decisions about one resource inevitably affect the other. In this context, assessing water-use efficiencies across diverse energy systems offers valuable insights into how societies can optimize resource allocation, minimize ecological impacts, …
‘Soñando En Un Futuro Mejor’: U.S. Empire, Racial Capitalism, And Garífuna And Afro-Caribbean Radicalism In Caribbean Honduras, 1920-1963, Cristian Jose Padilla Romero
‘Soñando En Un Futuro Mejor’: U.S. Empire, Racial Capitalism, And Garífuna And Afro-Caribbean Radicalism In Caribbean Honduras, 1920-1963, Cristian Jose Padilla Romero
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
This dissertation argues that Afro-Caribbean and Garífuna radicals in 20th-century Honduras forged, at different times, radical, race-conscious, and sometimes anti-imperialist and nationalist politics that contested both U.S. corporate domination and the racialized exclusions of the U.S and Honduran nation-state. Focusing on the period between 1920 and 1963, it traces struggles across the Caribbean coastal cities of La Ceiba, Trujillo, Puerto Cortés, and Tela. By foregrounding Black and Indigenous working-class actors, like Centeno García and Alfonso Lacayo, it highlights how racial capitalism, labor radicalism, and anti-Black state and corporate repression intersected in Honduras’ banana economy. The stories of individuals like Centeno …
Manufactured Enchantments: Technologizing The Self In The Twentieth-Century Americas, Isabel Ortiz
Manufactured Enchantments: Technologizing The Self In The Twentieth-Century Americas, Isabel Ortiz
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Manufactured Enchantments examines the way in which forms of enchantment worked at various sites—from culture industries, to self-help doxa, to esoteric and occult practices, to intellectual life—to construct an ideal self tailored to geopolitical violence in the U.S. and Latin America during the twentieth century. The dissertation studies five technologies—psychoanalysis, film, the rotoscope, the enneagram, and the tarot—that each suggested a self that could be stretched, modified, or altered to meet conditions of violence, uncertainty and precarity stemming from pre- and peri-Cold War U.S. imperial expansion efforts in the Americas. In each case study, I examine how the featured technology …
Livy's Historiography Of Roman Colonization, Talia Boylan
Livy's Historiography Of Roman Colonization, Talia Boylan
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Many early modern and enlightenment readers of Livy’s Ab urbe condita approached that work as a trove of local, colonial histories rather than an account of Rome’s rise to power— the interpretation favored by modern scholars of Livy as well as, on occasion, by Livy himself (e.g., in Praef. 1). This dissertation recuperates the localized mode of reading employed by pre-modern readers of Livy by treating his notices concerning colonies as self-contained nuggets of Italian history embedded within the imperial edifice of the Ab urbe condita. It explores how Livy worked to accommodate the colonial history they contain to the …
Mental Health Disparities From Climate Change: Age Differences And Structural Drivers Across California, Elizabeth Choa
Mental Health Disparities From Climate Change: Age Differences And Structural Drivers Across California, Elizabeth Choa
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Background: The health impacts of climate change are shaped by a complex interplay of geopolitical, ecological, and socioeconomic forces. Climate events impose substantial personal and societal costs, draining resources and deepening existing vulnerabilities within communities. Yet few studies examine how these dynamics affect groups often overlooked in climate–health discourse, including LGBTQ+ individuals, informal caregivers, and older adults. Objective: To examine how individual, community, and structural-level factors influence both climate vulnerability (defined as susceptibility to adverse health impacts) and climate resilience (the capacity to adapt to and withstand climate-related stressors). Focusing on diverse adult populations in California, this dissertation aims to …
Integrating Life History And Ecological Adaptation: Evolution In The Desert-Alpine Plant Lineage Cistantheae, Anri Chomentowska
Integrating Life History And Ecological Adaptation: Evolution In The Desert-Alpine Plant Lineage Cistantheae, Anri Chomentowska
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Understanding the mechanisms underlying evolution and adaptation - particularly among traits that evolve correlatively, like those that make up life history strategies - requires an integrative approach across evolutionary, ecological, and genomic scales. This dissertation focuses on the desert-alpine lineage Cistantheae (Montiaceae), a clade of herbaceous plants distributed across arid and montane habitats in western North and South America. The three chapters, at different scales, explore how climate niche, mating system, and photosynthetic physiology are correlated to life history strategies through evolutionary history. Chapter 1 presents the first densely-sampled molecular phylogeny of Cistantheae, inferred using reduced-representation genome sequencing (ddRADSeq). This …
In Terms Of Theory, Samuel Steinmetz
In Terms Of Theory, Samuel Steinmetz
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
In Terms of Theory attends to theory in relation to the eighteenth-century novel and to early twentieth-century film, primarily as the taking account of the possibility of form—of the novel, of film, and of theory. The overarching argument of the dissertation, developed in chapter 1, is that the novel and film, as modern forms unknown to classical aesthetics, present particularly rich cases for exploring what theory does, what it looks like, how it relates to its subject, and what kind of knowledge it offers. The rest of the dissertation presents independent case studies: chapter 2 analyzes and contextualizes the style …

The Impact Of High-Stakes Summative Reading Outcome Measures On Student Self-Efficacy, Hayley M. Johnson
Doctor of Education Dissertations
The purpose of this mixed methods study was to explore the influence of high-stakes reading tests on student self-efficacy, or confidence, as readers. The study focused on sixth-grade students who had taken the reading end-of-grade (EOG) test in Grades 3, 4, and 5. I analyzed their third-grade reading EOG scores to determine if that score was predictive of the fourth-grade reading EOG score and repeated the same analysis to see if fourth-grade reading EOG scores were predictive of fifth-grade scores. Then, those sixth-grade students' reading self-efficacies, as measured by the Butz and Usher (2015) Self-Efficacy Survey, were compared to their …

On October 4, 2018, Jerod Draper lost his life after two hours of torture by Harrison County jail officers. While in custody of the jail and suffering from an overdose, Jerod Draper was placed in a restraint chair for two hours and tased seven times in fifteen minutes. Jerod Draper’s story is one of the many stories demonstrating how a jail death epidemic is occurring throughout Indiana. In this Note, I discuss the history of incarceration in the United States, the statutes under which families of jail death victims can sue, and Indiana’s jail death problem. I then highlight Indiana’s …

Australian Education Research Organisation And Teacher Education, Bruce Haynes
Australian Education Research Organisation And Teacher Education, Bruce Haynes
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
The Australian Education Research Organisation was created to initiate, collate and disseminate reliable evidence-based research to the Australian school system. It uses the latest cognitive psychology to advocate the use of explicit instruction and phonics to lift outcomes of Australian schooling. These practices are reflected in the new ‘core content’ for Initial Teacher Education programs that were identified by the Teacher Education Expert Panel to be mandated in national accreditation processes for tertiary providers delivering initial teacher education. Mandating these practices is problematic and marks a further shift towards authoritarian processes in Australia.
Flags As Symbols Of Place: Unpacking Geographic Meaning And Identity In Student Flag Designs, Carlos A. Morales-Ramirez
Flags As Symbols Of Place: Unpacking Geographic Meaning And Identity In Student Flag Designs, Carlos A. Morales-Ramirez
West Chester University Doctoral Projects
Flags have been around for centuries; however, vexillology, the study of flags, was not officially coined until the 1960s. Despite this, there is still a need for more scientific and empirical research. Using qualitative arts-based research (ABR) methodology, this study investigates the creative journey of students in an undergraduate geography course as they design a flag for a place of their choosing. Students were asked to interpret the concept of ‘place’ through their flag designs while also incorporating flag design principles. The results showed that participants selected places tied to themes such as hometown, family, love, memories, and culture often …
Does The Relative Education Model Explain Turnout Across Racial And Ethnic Groups?, Ashley Grace Burkholder, Eric Hansen, Emily Wager
Does The Relative Education Model Explain Turnout Across Racial And Ethnic Groups?, Ashley Grace Burkholder, Eric Hansen, Emily Wager
Political Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
The relative education model holds that educational attainment reflects existing socioeconomic advantages that are associated with participation rather than spurring political participation on its own. Yet, emerging research on compensation effects suggests that greater educational attainment leads to increased political engagement among more marginal populations in which political socialization is less likely to occur outside of schools. We argue that the relative education model will better describe the relationship between education and voting patterns among more advantaged groups. We test our expectations by estimating the relative education model within racial and ethnic groups in the U.S. using data from the …
