Adaptation For Whom? Understanding The Impacts Of Dyke Policies On Small-Scale Farmers In Ca Mau Province Of Vietnam, Nguyen Minh Quang, Nguyen Van Minh, Nguyen Vo Chau Ngan, Martha B. Lerski Jan 2025

Adaptation For Whom? Understanding The Impacts Of Dyke Policies On Small-Scale Farmers In Ca Mau Province Of Vietnam, Nguyen Minh Quang, Nguyen Van Minh, Nguyen Vo Chau Ngan, Martha B. Lerski

Publications and Research

Low-lying deltas worldwide are extremely vulnerable to sea-level rise. As the risks of climate-induced flooding become increasingly clear, the thirst for infrastructure-driven adaptation increases. This highlights a patent need to understand the impacts of engineering adaptation solutions, especially those targeting built structures such as dykes and sluices, on farmers from a bottom-up, farmer-centred perspective. The study addresses this call by examining cases where dyke policies, while successful in some dimensions, have undermined small-scale farmer livelihoods in Ca Mau ― Vietnam’s southernmost rural province. It identifies areas in need of attention and adds empirical data related to this group of farmers. …

Visual arts workshops engaged community members in mixed methods research. Results documented cultural elements, particularly intangible and …

Shutting Down The Supply Chain Pipeline Of Counterfeit Goods Running From Alibaba To Amazon, Daniel C. Chow Jan 2025

Shutting Down The Supply Chain Pipeline Of Counterfeit Goods Running From Alibaba To Amazon, Daniel C. Chow

SMU Science and Technology Law Review

An immense supply chain pipeline constantly funnels millions of counterfeit goods from Alibaba’s e-commerce sites in China to third party sellers who sell these goods on Amazon to U.S. consumers. Amazon has acknowledged that it has a problem with counterfeits on its e-commerce sites, but its current responses to counterfeiting are primarily performative and intended to pacify disgruntled brand owners and frustrated consumers. Amazon’s responses will likely have little or no effect on counterfeits on its websites. This Article sets forth a direct and straightforward method for shutting down or seriously disrupting this pipeline based on using China’s existing laws. …

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

An environmental scan conducted in 2022 highlighted a need for enhanced preparation for collaboration between occupational therapists (OTs) and occupational therapist assistants (OTAs) in Ontario, Canada. In response, an online course was developed to disseminate knowledge needed for effective OT-OTA intraprofessional collaboration (IntraPC) in the Canadian context. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the online course to improve perceived preparedness among Canadian OT and OTA students for OT-OTA IntraPC. Participants were Master’s-level OT students and diploma-level OTA students studying in Canada (N = 136), who were invited to complete the course by their program instructors. …

Temporal Occupational Patterns Amidst Covid-19: A Comparative Analysis Of Occupational Therapy Graduate Students’ Self-Reports, Amanda C. Jozkowski, Julie M. Werner, Meagan Downey

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

This study employed a qualitatively-driven mixed method approach to exploring temporal occupational patterns among occupational therapy graduate students in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data collected from cohorts in 2021 and 2022 were contrasted with those previously reported for 2019 and 2020, highlighting how these patterns evolved over time. Notable changes in time use were identified between the 2021 and 2022 cohorts. In 2022, students reported increased time spent in class and in driving/community mobility, while their time dedicated to physical activity, health maintenance, and family interactions declined. The analysis revealed the complexity of students' time use due …

Everything Old Is Q Again: An Analysis Of The Resurgent #Pizzagate Myth In Social Media, Bond Benton, Daniela Peterka-Benton Jan 2025

Everything Old Is Q Again: An Analysis Of The Resurgent #Pizzagate Myth In Social Media, Bond Benton, Daniela Peterka-Benton

College of Communication and Media Scholarship and Creative Works

On November 28, 2023, X CEO Elon Musk posted a meme suggesting that the #pizzagate conspiracy had been suppressed by powerful forces complicit in the exploitation of children. The #pizzagate conspiracy presumed that elites had organized a ring serving pedophiles in the basement of a pizzeria in Washington D.C. The conspiracy was debunked in major news outlets with social media platforms such as Facebook banning such content, as well (BBC News). These efforts ultimately did not prevent #pizzagate from morphing into the QAnon conspiracy that would galvanize multiple extremist political movements (Bleakley). Specifically, however, #pizzagate as a discrete narrative was …

Dominance Of Leading Business Schools In Top Journals: Insights For Increasing Institutional Representation, Rodrigo Romero-Silva, Erika Marsillac, Sander De Leeuw

Information Technology & Decision Sciences Faculty Publications

The competitive push for business schools to publish in prestigious journals has resulted in a disproportionate number of papers in prestigious Management and Operations Research/Management Science (OR/MS) journals coming from a select group of institutions. Our analysis shows the Matthew effect of prestigious journals favors established schools with 51.2% of papers in 18 Management ABS 4* journals and 61.3% of papers in 3 OR/MS ABS 4* journals involving authors from the 100 top business schools identified by the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). Citation patterns are similarly concentrated among papers authored by scholars from UTD-listed business schools, with nearly …

Rivers And Industry: The Environmental And Economic Evolution Of Broome County, Zachary Hood

Research Days Posters 2025

This research paper aims to analyze how the confluence of the Susquehanna and Chenango rivers in Broome County has impacted the industrial and economic development of the area, from the arrival of the first European settlers to modern times. The general methodology for research gathering of the paper revolves around historical analysis, utilizing data from the county, state, private firms, and independent studies to develop a foundation. The paper places less emphasis on generating new data and instead focuses on analyzing and compiling preexisting information to reach new conclusions. Generally speaking, even with the unique topography of the area, both …

Nature's Defense Against Hurricanes, Kiara M. Alvarez Jan 2025

Nature's Defense Against Hurricanes, Kiara M. Alvarez

Research Days Posters 2025

Before urban industrialism led to the widespread drainage and destruction of wetlands, many early cultures recognized their value in sustaining ecological balance rather than viewing them as “wastelands.” Wetlands provide natural flood control, absorb storm surges, and support biodiversity. Florida, the state with the most wetlands in the contiguous United States, contains approximately 11 million acres, with the Everglades—the largest tropical wetland in North America—located in the central region of the state. These wetlands play a crucial role in mitigating the impact of hurricanes and tropical storms by absorbing excess water and reducing flooding. This project examines how the presence …

A Look Into How Green Binghamton Really Is, Eva Mandelbaum Jan 2025

A Look Into How Green Binghamton Really Is, Eva Mandelbaum

Research Days Posters 2025

In 1987, the UN defined sustainability as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” College campuses often appear filled with a desire for social change, including climate action and sustainability initiatives. But how much do students know—or care—about the initiatives on their own campus? If people view environmentalism and sustainability as imperative solutions to pressing issues that most people should care about, they are more likely to take action to encourage them. By surveying members of the Binghamton University community, this study gauges public perception of on-campus sustainability and …

Climate Disasters And The Inherent Disparity Of Recovery Efforts, Bennett Weitz Jan 2025

Climate Disasters And The Inherent Disparity Of Recovery Efforts, Bennett Weitz

Research Days Posters 2025

Over the past twenty years, there has been a dramatic increase in climate-related disasters, including, but not limited to, heatwaves, hurricanes, and flooding. Climate change has exacerbated the severity of many events, such as Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Sandy, and the 2025 California wildfires. This article will examine the disparity in recovery efforts, the significantly worse impact on less privileged communities, and the permanent damage caused by climate disasters. Additionally, this paper will analyze meteorological and economic data to highlight the significant differences in recovery efforts, the intersection of climate science and climate justice, and how geographic locations influence the speed …

The Arctic Ocean Region : Biodiversity, Governance And Protective Measures, Antonios Andreadakis, Graeme Chesters, Dimitrios Dalaklis, 90 North Foundation

Reports

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

• The Arctic Ocean region stands at the forefront of global environmental transformation, serving as a harbinger of climate change and a frontier for emergent geopolitical and economic interests.

• The Arctic region's economic potential, particularly in shipping and resource extraction, appears to offer shorter trade routes, reduced fuel consumption, and increased access to high-value resources. However, this analysis largely ignores the complex geo-physical, environmental and geographical limitations of the region.

• The fragility of Arctic Ocean ecosystems – characterized by slow ecological recovery, specialised biodiversity, and extreme environmental conditions – renders them especially vulnerable to anthropogenic disturbances. …

Fuel To The Fire: Experimenting With Care Ethics In Museum Education, Jenna S. Green Jan 2025

Fuel To The Fire: Experimenting With Care Ethics In Museum Education, Jenna S. Green

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

This article suggests museum theory and practice needs to shift its ideological foundation from storage, preservation, restoration, exhibition making, and learning, to one of radical care. Responding to the questions posed by the Journal of Social Theory in Art Education and drawing focus around the theme of (re)activating theory to envision an alternative educational model, I engage with Dana Carlisle Kletchka’s (2023) introduction of care ethics to art museum education. I suggest that care ethics, as a growing theory in museums, is interdisciplinary and should include contemplative scholarship and practices to embody its guiding tenants. I then take up Kletchka’s …

Smartphones On Wheels In Southeast Asia: A Crossroads For Data Governance, Attamongkol Tantratian, Gunn Jiravuttipong Jan 2025

Smartphones On Wheels In Southeast Asia: A Crossroads For Data Governance, Attamongkol Tantratian, Gunn Jiravuttipong

Journal of Law and Mobility

While the transformation of automobiles into data-generating “smartphones on wheels” has revolutionized mobility, it has also raised critical concerns over data privacy and sovereignty. Equipped with sensors and connected technologies, smart vehicles collect vast amounts of data, including personal information, driving patterns, and biometric identifiers. While auto-exporting jurisdictions such as the United States, the European Union, and China have introduced regulatory measures to address these challenges, countries importing smart vehicles remain vulnerable due to their limited influence over the auto companies’ integrated technology and data policies.

This Article examines the regulatory and economic challenges faced by developing nations integrating foreign-designed …

Neighborliness Vs. Car Culture: Traffic Violence, Pedestrian Deaths In Philadelphia, And Vision Zero's Concept Of Equity, Regina Austin Jan 2025

Neighborliness Vs. Car Culture: Traffic Violence, Pedestrian Deaths In Philadelphia, And Vision Zero's Concept Of Equity, Regina Austin

Journal of Law and Mobility

Vision Zero (VZ) is a transportation policy adopted by major cities like Philadelphia that aims to reduce or eliminate traffic violence, primarily through improvements in the transportation infrastructure. VZ prioritizes engineering (over enforcement), community engagement, and perhaps most importantly, equity. In the battle for superiority among users of land-based travel modes in America, automobile drivers have benefited from arterial highways that speed traffic flows around and through urban enclaves to reach center city business districts and from a car culture that encourages dominant behavior behind the wheel. Pedestrians have been among the losers.

In Philadelphia, as elsewhere, pedestrians who are …

La Reconquête Post-Coloniale De Góor-Jigéen: Repenser Le Queer Au Sénégal, Katrina Brazhnikov Jan 2025

La Reconquête Post-Coloniale De Góor-Jigéen: Repenser Le Queer Au Sénégal, Katrina Brazhnikov

Senior Honors and Award-Winning Theses

What The Earth Remembers: Landscape And Materiality In The Work Of Sally Mann, Mark Bradford, And Tacita Dean, Elliot Krasnopoler Jan 2025

What The Earth Remembers: Landscape And Materiality In The Work Of Sally Mann, Mark Bradford, And Tacita Dean, Elliot Krasnopoler

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation triangulates the complex relationships among materiality, place, and history in works of contemporary landscape. I analyze three case studies: Sally Mann’s photographs of the American South, Mark Bradford’s iconoclastic paintings after the Gettysburg Cyclorama, and Tacita Dean’s film of the Great Salt Lake. I contend that these contemporary works of art are capacious in their temporal and narrative reach, holding multifaceted histories of America, including those of environment, war, oppression, and extraction. A key part of my thesis is that by looking at how these works were made and what they are made of—their materials, places, and processes—we …

Rethinking Social Rights From Latin America, Christian Gonzalez Chacon Jan 2025

Rethinking Social Rights From Latin America, Christian Gonzalez Chacon

Washington and Lee Journal of Civil Rights and Social Justice

International human rights courts and bodies have traditionally enforced social rights within constrained frameworks, such as “available resources” and “minimum provision,” often overlooking deeper structural inequalities and urgent global challenges. This paper advocates for a paradigm shift grounded in the capabilities framework, reconceptualizing rights to encompass sustainability, harmony, and human flourishing. Drawing on indigenous philosophies from Latin America, I propose strategies to strengthen enforcement mechanisms, including the establishment of specialized human rights courts, equitable taxation systems, and regenerative economic models. By aligning human rights with capabilities and ecological stewardship, this paper illustrates their potential to address poverty, inequality, and climate …

State Travel Burdens For Out-Of-State Abortion Care In The Wake Of The Dobbs Decision, Kelsey D. Titus Jan 2025

State Travel Burdens For Out-Of-State Abortion Care In The Wake Of The Dobbs Decision, Kelsey D. Titus

Integrative Learning Experience (ILE) Theses

This project examines abortion-related travel burdens as a critical public health policy problem, using the Multiple Streams Framework to link lived experience, health inequities, and policy responses across levels of governance. Anchored in the problem and policy streams, the analysis treats post-Dobbs interstate travel for abortion as a population-level determinant of health that amplifies existing social and structural inequities.

The project employs a qualitative thematic policy analysis drawing on two data sources: a key informant semi-structured interview with a reproductive justice leader and a targeted review of contemporary opinion and commentary articles from leading public health and health policy outlets. …

Jerking The Rug Out From Under A Trade Secret Licensee: Is Transfer Of The Patent A Remedy?, Henry H. Perritt Jr. Jan 2025

Jerking The Rug Out From Under A Trade Secret Licensee: Is Transfer Of The Patent A Remedy?, Henry H. Perritt Jr.

Michigan Technology Law Review

Predominantly state trade secret law and exclusively federal patent law enjoy a sometimes-uneasy coexistence. Inventions almost always are secret until and unless they are patented; publicizing them for too long will negate the availability of a patent. Misappropriation of trade secrets often is accompanied by application for a patent on the same subject matter. This commonly occurs when an employee gains access to his employer’s trade secrets, quits, and then applies for a patent on them in his own name, maybe after going to work for a competitor of the original employer. It is also conceivable that the owner of …

Social Data's Role In Law And Political Economy, Salome Viljoen Jan 2025

Social Data's Role In Law And Political Economy, Salome Viljoen

Book Chapters

Over the past several years, the digital economy has been a notable uptick in interest from scholars across areas of law. This should come as no surprise. The digital economy encompasses some of the largest companies in the world, whose business models pioneer and spread new strategies to concentrate private power across the political economy more broadly. Digital companies have transformed commercial and social life, and they raise problems of concentrated private power. They are also charged with a slew of downstream disruptions resulting from collective pursuit of that power: global, social, and interpersonal forms of dislocation, oppression, impoverishment, alienation, …
